99% sure it's time for brakes. Sounds like the wear indicators are squealing. I'll pop the tires off tomorrow and take a close look. Found a thread on here about doing brakes. Sounds pretty easy.
View 9 RepliesI have an 2007 Toyota Prius and in the mornings, especially if it is humid or moist outside, my brakes grab badly during the first couple of stops....it's bad enough to make somebody run into the back of me. When it happens, you will also hear a screeching noise coming from the (sounds like ) rear brake, passenger side. I have taken the car to the local garage twice and they found nothing wrong. I have taken it to the local Toyota dealer 3 times and likewise, they found nothing wrong either.
View 3 RepliesThere is this incessant squealing and grinding coming from my brakes. I have taken my 2010 Hyundai Accent to FOUR different mechanics and none of them have been able to figure out what is wrong with my brakes. I have replaced all of them and each mechanic has cleaned and adjusted them. But THREE days after, every time without fail, it is back as bad as it was before. It is only the rear right brake drum that is doing it still and I have no clue what to do. Something is definitely wrong with this car.

View 15 RepliesI got two new Bridgestone ER300 Ecopia to replace two on the front. Trouble is after getting the tires fitted the car pulled to the left quite badly and my mpg's went down! Hmmm. I checked the tires in case a non low rolling resistance tire had been fitted by mistake, but they were correct. I then checked the pressures, which again were correct. So I guessed the tracking must have been out so booked it in with the dealers for checking. After a couple hours and a couple test drives later they advised the tracking is fine and the tires are fine. Odd.
Just filled up for the second time since the new tires and I'm struggling to get anywhere near 50 mpg! Even after a few long trips where I know from past experience that I could get mid 60's easily. I've inspected the tires closely and note that one of the new ones is made in Italy and the rest are from France. All the loadings, ratings and the type are the same, just made in a different factory and it is a slightly lighter colour compared to the French ones.
So, my 2012 Prius has 61,000 miles and I started hearing some terrible squealing from my rear brakes. This weekend, I decided to take the tires off and investigate. Turns out, that my rear pads were worn to metal.
I switched the pads with new ones. The rotor was still new and didn't need replacing. Torqued the caliper bolt to 25ft/lb and put it back together. However at the end, I forgot to put back on the two wire clips take keep the brake pads apart!
Do I need to put these clips on? I'm too lazy to take my tires off again.
Lesson learned: Turn clockwise and PUSH the rear piston at the same time to get it to go back in. Turning it alone does nothing.
I'm the loudest Prius in CT right now. My brakes doing that loud scraping sound. Is it normal to need brakes this soon?
View 6 Replies I have a Phaeton W12. When I brake there is a slight shudder at most speeds unless I brake fairly hard, except when traveling at 120 km/h and 85km/h, at these speeds the shudder is severe uless I brake hard, but this could be that the car slows out of these 'bad speeds' quickly. The shudder is unnerving and severe enough to expect that it will cause damage. I did have the disks/rotors skimmed on a lathe, I thought this had fixed the problem, I can't be sure it didn't. All seemded fine initially, but I don't remember the speeds I was doing when I tested the skimmed disks for the first time.
To add to the fun, I brought with me when I moved countries and VW won't work on it before its registered locally and I need the brakes to be working to do so. Chicken and egg sort of problem. Parst are also not freely available here.
There is a rubber suspension bush in front which I noticed needs to be replaced, which I will order today, but it's likely to take a few weeks to get here unless it's used on an Audi or another car sold here, but it's the opposite front wheel which appears to have uneven wear on the disk.
The brakes on my Equinox squeal badly when I back up but don't seem to squeal at all otherwise. It's driving me crazy...and probably my neighbors, too, whenever I back out of my driveway.
View 4 RepliesI have 1994 Ford Ranger 4.0. In Nov. I had the tranny rebuilt in Boston and also had new rotors and pads put on the front. By the time I got home, the truck was shaking badly when I hit the brakes. Since then, after it's parked a while, (I drive it once a week or so) I can't get it to move in "Drive". Reverse works fine. I thought it was the tranny but if I increase the gas flow, the rear wheels will screech, so I think the front brakes are stuck. After I'm able to "break" whatever holding them, the truck works fine. One of the rear wheel drum brakes is too tight and the wheel will feel pretty warm when I get it home and that will be taken care of but I don't really think it's the rear brakes or they wouldn't screech when I hit the gas.
View 5 RepliesAt 55k, 72k, 76K and 91k the rear brakes have hung up, become very hot and smoked badly. Dealer service claims it comes from rust binding the calipers because we live in the Northeast. I've been driving for 35 years and never had an issue with any other vehicle. They cleaned the calipers and sent me on my way. I think there is an underlying issue. There is no way I should have this issue every 20,000 miles ( or less ). What else could cause this? Brake Lines? Master Cyl? Honda service want nothing to do with it. At very least I asked them to replace the calipers which they did not agree to do.
View 11 RepliesI have a 2001 vw Jetta with a manual transmission (just over 155,000 miles). My first set of front brakes lasted to about 135,000. After they were replaced a shimmy started to appear when braking a few thousand miles in. At about 8,000 miles the shimmy became so bad that I brought the car back to the dealer. They said the rotors were warped. The pads and rotors were replaced again and in about 5,000 miles same thing. The pads and rotors were replaced again at no charge and it is now about 5,000 miles later and the same thing is happening again.
View 2 RepliesJust replaced break pads and rotors. Inner pad on left side was gone leading me to believe slides were not working properly. Pulled apart, cleaned and greased everything, and replaced pads and rotors. Calipers seem to be working fine. Now when I break hard, the truck pulls badly to the left. When I break softly, it seeks normal. My front end is a bit out of whack and veers just a bit to the left. Do you think this is my issue with the breaking ? I'm getting new tires and an alignment soon but was just curious.

After our recent cold snap I was surprised how many cars were in my parking lot at work with people grinding away trying to get them to start and the nasty sounds the cars made once they did start. Everything from rough running, not firing on all cylinders, and/or belts squealing.
Now I will admit the Prius did act a little different that day. When the ICE started it did sound like it was working a little harder than it usually does when I first start it. But in all reality at -20degF the ICE started the same as it ever did.
2013 Prius 3 making a squealing or rattling noise when accelerating after car is warmed up. It only does it when the car is up to temperature and when you accelerate slightly harder, like going up a hill or something. It sounds like a pulley or something squealing. It has been to the dealer and of course they couldn't duplicate the noise or see anything wrong. Not to sound funny, but it actually sounds like a hamster running on a wheel. It is very annoying. It is not a constant noise, it only happens under load. It gets louder when the ac is on as well. If you let off the accelerator when it starts the noise goes away. I don't know of it matters but our car has the forged 17" wheels on it from the factory, and the car has 8600 miles on it.
View 19 RepliesI recently purchased a new (to me) 2010 prius and I've been noticing that sometimes, but not always, I hear a fairly loud noise when lifting my foot off the brake pedal. It sounds like a squeak or squeal, and I want to say I can almost feel a tiny bit of resistance in the pedal when it happens though that could be in my head. The noise does NOT occur when pushing down on the pedal (only when lifting), and it seems to only occur when the car is stopped.
View 7 RepliesOur Prius is only a year old with less than 9,000 miles. Everything has been fine with it and then yesterday I took it out of the garage and started to drive and there was the most horrendous grinding/squealing/scraping noise as I started moving from the front passenger side (UK passenger, so left looking out).
I stopped the car and had a look, as at first I thought I was dragging something, but nothing to be seen. Checked the parking brake was definitely not engaged. I then thought perhaps something is caught in the brake pads and it will go in a bit, however even hard braking didn't seem to change the noise at all.
Carried on (I was going about 7 miles), and as I drove it would gradually get quieter, and then get louder again, with the occasional "clang" sound almost like a spring under tension suddenly moving.
Towards the end of the journey it had started to go quieter again, but with the window down you could still hear constant squeal/grind.
Parked the car, was away for an hour, came back and set off home and the noise was totally gone. Entirely silent all the way back home! Now I don't know what to do - whether it will come back, or whether I should take it in to garage for them to look (even though it's now not making any noise).
Is it my wheel bearing, rotors or brake pads?
How do I describe it... well it has this squealing noise and it's proportional to my speed.

Well I've had it with the low mph squealing of my brakes. I'm currently running the brembo 2bk 4 piston set up. I'm assuming it has race pads since it only squeals at low speeds. The pads are still good btw.
I do not track the car so I was thinking something in the middle pad wise. I was looking at the hawk hps street pads(they seem great with no noise) or the stoptech brake pads(pretty much the same as the hawks). They both will fit my brake setup.
I purchased a 2010 Toyota Rav4 January 2010. In august, I noticed that the driver seat was badly frayed where you sit. Dealer replaced it. It is now November 2011 and the problem is back. The Rav4 has 29,000 miles. I am not particularly heavy nor do I carry razor blades in my back pocket. In fact, I can't even drive long distances with my wallet in my back pocket. I took the car in and this time the dealer said Toyota would not warranty the seat.
