Prius (2010-12) :: Brake Lights Not Consistently Lighting Up With Very Light Braking
Dec 10, 2010
On my way into work this morning I noticed that my brake lights don't always light up under very light braking. Noticed this on 2010?

View 3 RepliesI have a 2009 Prius with 73,000.I turned on my Prius after a quick stop at a drug store today to find my brake light and ABS warning lights on. In addition, braking was rough. I have to step on the brake much soon and "deeper" to stop. After a quick search of the net I learned I wasn't alone. Here are the codes I received-
C1241- I just replaced my 12v battery about 1 1/2 years ago so I'm confused about 1241. I checked the levels. The are normal. The battery showed levels of 14 to 14.1v throughout the test. Maybe I don't understand the code?
C1247- Stroke Sensor
C1377- Capacitor malfunction
Before I take my car to Toyota, I would like your opinion on what actually works to correct the problem. I cleared the codes and the car works fine right now. If I continue to clear the codes will the car work? I searched the forum the one person seems to believe the to repair replacing Stroke sensor is the best/only fix.
Braking at a stoplight tonight, I had the VSC and ABS light come on. I pulled over to a parking lot and shut the car down. I couldn't tell any issues with the brakes at all in the short few hundred feet I drove to pull off. Turned it back on and the lights were no longer on.
View 8 RepliesWhen engaging the engine braking ( B ) function on the Prius IV, do the brake lights come on to warn the driver behind me that I'm slowing down?
View 19 RepliesThe driver's side front and rear has been consistently loosing 2 -3 PSI more than the other side.
Only had it for like 2 months and I don't have anything loaded like luggage in the vehicle.
Is this something I need to be concerned about?
I slammed on my brakes the other day because a car pulled out in front of me. When i let off the brakes i noticed the car did not move for a good 1-2 seconds and a traction control light was flashing. I didn't think much of it until i was sitting at a light and decided to see what happens if i press my brake pedals in hard again... the traction light turns on again and the car doesn't move when brakes are disengaged for a few seconds. Is this normal? It feels like my hill assist on the BMW. Why the traction light turns on? My car is a 2010 Prius III with 5k miles.
View 5 RepliesI have a really long downhill at the end of my commute. If I am putting on slight brake pressure to regen, are my brake lights on? Or do they only come on when you put enough pressure on the pedal to start slowing the car?
View 10 RepliesMy 2008 Prius has a dash that won't light up consistently. Also won't turn off until you hold the Start button for about 10 seconds. I found out my problems were a result of a bad 12v battery. So I changed it and the problem continues. Took the battery out and it tests fine. What else could be the problem and how can I fix it.
View 4 RepliesI got in the car (2010 Prius IV, 170k miles) this a.m and the brake, ABS, & stability/traction control lights all just lit-up. Can run & drives just fine.
View 19 RepliesI've noticed some Prius G3 cars with burned-out LEDs. Yesterday I saw one with just one "square" of LEDs burned-out, and today I saw one with the left-most row (5 squares vertical) inactive but the other 7 still working. Do cops pull-over owners if the brake light still works, but is partially burned out?
View 3 RepliesIn my 2010 IV, the brake lights activate on the late side. I can only roughly measure it, but brake lights go on when the brake pedal is depressed at least 1.5 inches. I am used to brake lights in other cars activating with a light touch of the pedal.
Problem is: this really ratchets up the danger of tailgaters, who cannot see when you are beginning to stop. Occasionally, a driver who has been trailing me asks if the brake lights are working properly.
Can I assume that my rear brake lights don't come on when I'm in B mode on my transmission? I searched for something about this in my manual and on this website, but found no mention of it. Since it's meant to simulate downshifting, I'm guessing my brake lights don't come on.
View 19 RepliesI had not driven the Prius in a few weeks, and even then, that was for less than five miles, and had the low tire pressure indicator come on late last week when the temperatures cooled down, which I fully expected given my opportunities with the Toyota Dealer properly inflating tires. We were away for another week and returned today and I decided to check the tires and add air, and in addition to the tire pressure indicator, the ABS, Traction Control, and Brake Indicator lights were on. As soon as I filled all the tires to the specified PSI, that indicator disappeared but the brake related ones all stayed on.
View 10 RepliesStarted my 2010 Prius the other day and the traction control, brake light, abs light and a yellow Astrix light came on and wouldn't go off. The car drives and handles just fine, brakes feel normal. I have tried resetting the lights with a trick with a paper clip someone else posted, but it didn't work for me.
View 7 RepliesI just get a hand of a brake blinkers module that when you connected parallel to the brake lights it will blinks and strobes like emergency vehicles. When brake is pressed, the brake lights blinks rapidly and strobes random pattern. It gives more visibility instead just stay on.
View 9 RepliesMy brake lights on the drivers side do not come on when braking, however, the regular nighttime lights are fine. Does this mean the probem is the brake light switch? The right side brake lights are fine. Where is the brake light switch and how do I access it?
View 2 RepliesI have a stock '13 GTI with halogens and standard (non-LED) tails.
In VCDS, I coded the CECM to enable the brake light flashing under panic braking and also enabled the activation of hazard flashers under panic braking. Coding was accepted, no issues.
However when I did a driveby test yesterday with a friend watching, neither feature activated. I stomped on the brakes as hard as I could; ABS definitely engaged. So I was wondering a couple things:
Is there a minimum speed required before this will engage? I was probably going only about 35 mph when I hit the brakes.
Does this feature (at least the flashing brake light portion) require LED tails or will it work with the regular tails?
Looking on youtube videos of people who have activated this, it appears that they have both the flashing brake lights and flashing hazards activated at the same time so it would seem that's allowed by the CECM, yes?
Found a screen shot of the VCDS screen to show what I did:
I enabled BOTH bit 1 and bit 2. Some of the research I'm doing seems to hint that I should only be selecting one or the other?
I have a 2010 Prius Hybrid and lately, on an intermittent basis, I will press the brake pedal and push the start button and the dashboard lights up as normal but when I go to put it in gear nothing happens. The last time it happened the fan was running and I couldn't turn it off. It's like the car is all set to go but all the interior controls don't function. I then shut it off and restart it and everything works.
View 1 RepliesWhen I open the driver door at night, the brake pump would dim the interior lights a little while running. Is this normal for a 6 month-old aux battery? All my trips are 30 mins or longer so it has plenty of opportunity to recharge.
View 4 RepliesHow the rear, high center mounted brake light (ie "3rd brake light") intermittently lights individual bulbs, but never all at once. It was also causing an annoying "Check Brake Lights" warning plus beep on the dash (on every brake). Till I get it sorted I simply disconnected the 3rd brake light which completely turned it off and just gave me one warning/beep (instead of lots of them).
I spoke to VW about it yesterday and wasnt impressed by their attitude, so last night I tried plugging it back in to see if it was still the same now that my battery should be topped up due to change of house and longer trips. To my surprise at first it worked perfectly, all bulbs lit up.
However the more I tested, the less lights lit up. It was quite strange, they would "dance" on an off right in front of me. Wiggling the wiring had a small effect, but it didnt seem to be a wiring issue. So I plugged it out and left it was it was (disabled). However to my annoyance on my trip in today, I start getting repeated "Check Brake Light" warnings beeps (remember, its disconnected so it should do it once only) and even more irritating every time the warning came up on the dash the front left headlamp would flash on and off once! What the hell is going on with the lighting system!
2005 with 110K miles. Had oil change about 2K miles ago, tires rotated about 1K miles ago. I was at a stop light when I felt a little movement in the brake pedal and the lights all came on. Brakes continued to work, but somewhat harder to push the pedal. When first applying the brakes, there was a very slight wandering of the car, which was easy to correct.
I drove the car home and turned it off. About an hour later I started it and the problem was gone. I took it to an independent garage the next day. Their scan tool found C1357 -- decrease pressure solenoid fault -- but could not go further into sub codes. They recommended that I take it to dealer.
