I want to say that I love my prius but I am having an odd (although minor issue).
When I accelerate a I hear a noise (it sort of sounds like a cricket rapidly chirping, only a lower pitch or maybe a phone on vibrate).
What this could be?
The day after I purchased the Accent I noticed that when idle I would hear a chirping/cricket sound emanating somewhere in the engine bay area, closer to the cockpit of the vehicle. As soon as I'd touch the clutch the sound would disappear, now I'm not talking about pressing it hard, the ever so slightest touch would silence the noise.
Now I asked this question here already but I thought I'd ask you directly. I was told throw out bearing and other clutch related possibilities. Now I have a two year warranty so I brought it to the dealership and of course, Murphy's law wouldn't you know it, the sound did not present itself the entire time I was there! lol Now I came to the conclusion (albeit a total hypothesis ) that it was raining, or had rained the days the sound wasn't present or diminished enough that I couldn't hear it anymore. I figured maybe it's because they need new grease perhaps and when it rains the viscosity of the current grease changed enough to lube the part properly.
Either way the dealership of course said there's nothing they could find wrong with Eleanor, and I sh!t you not the moment I brought her back home it started making the sound again! Should I be worried? Last thing I need is the clutch or something else dying and I find out I could have prevented it.
Had the car for less than a week and I'm getting a constant chirping/cricket sound, the moment I touch the clutch even slightly it stops. Sound is gone when clutch is touched in any way or engaged. My first thought is Throw Out Bearing, or perhaps pilot bearing?
2010 GL Sport model.
There is a chirping sound coming from the engine of my 2010 Prius. It sounds like a really fast bird chirping and my guess is its probably the serpentine belt. It is there as soon as I start car and the engine is running. 80k miles.
View 7 RepliesI have only done 18,000 Kms on my 2013 Elantra GLS. Whenever I am in traffic driving real slow, and whenever the gear shifts in 2nd, the acceleration begins to drop to 1000/1500 RPM very rapidly while pressing and releasing the pedal, and it becomes jerky...
I will try posting a video, but meanwhile, it gets really annoying at times and I need to maintain a very feather foot to make sure it doesn't jerk especially when there are passengers on board..
I have an 87 Dakota with a two-piece driveshaft, bought it new. A couple months ago at 140,000 miles there came a chirping noise from the rear at acceleration from a stop. I changed the u-joints with new Moogs and had a new center support bearing pressed on at a driveline shop. Reinstall driveshaft same as it came out. The u-joint at the diff was shot, the other two not far behind. The chirping vanished as expected, but was replaced with a slight vibration felt in the seat starting at 50-55 mph. I dropped the truck off at the driveline shop to get the driveshaft balanced. They put it on the balancer and called to say they couldn't balance it, the indicator kept jumping around and wouldn't stabilize. I asked them to reinstall it and came to pick get the truck. The guy who worked on it said that this was usually a u-joint problem. I asked what brand they used and pulled he out a Neapco u-joint box and said they use them exclusively and have never had any problems. I ordered Neapcos from RockAuto. Will replace the Moogs and see what happens. After they reinstalled the shaft I drove in the freeway and it acted exactly the same.
I was very careful when pressing out the old joints not to stress any of the yokes, applying pressure to the u-joint members at right angles to the cap being pressed out and not to the cap 180 degrees opposite. When installing the new joints, after inserting the clips (interior) I pressed all clips snug against the yoke. The joints all moved freely in all directions. Again, the shaft was replaced exactly as it came out.

Recently, the oil light / shut engine off light came on, and during deceleration, an odd chirping noise was heard.
Oil level is fine. Previous owner claims to have had it changed every 6k with full synthetic. What the culprit might be?
I have an 87 longbed Dakota that I bought new. It's my work truck. Lately it has developed a chirping noise that I hear best with the rear slider window open. I think it is safe to say that it is not coming from under the hood. When I accelerate from a stop the chirping noise increases in pitch and frequency. The frequency does not change when the auto trans up shifts. There has been no noticeable out-of-the-ordinary vibrations, even at freeway speeds.
I have stopped driving on the freeway since the chirping became impossible to ignore. The chirping becomes less and less audible the faster I go as the pitch and frequency increases. When just starting from a dead stop, it sounds like a metallic scraping noise. Whenever I take my foot off the gas the chirping stops, even when still coasting, so it only occurs under load. It does not occur when the truck is stopped and the engine is revved.
I have a 2008 Prius with 111,000 miles on it and lately, I hear a loud chirping, whining sound that is louder under acceleration and seems to vary only according to acceleration or deceleration. Acceleration makes a louder sound. The noise does not occur when vehicle is cold and first driven. It's only after it's driven for awhile and things are warmed up but then again, it doesn't always do it even though it's warmed up. Not sure I could reproduce the sound if I brought it to a dealer for service. When the noise does start up, it's very apparent and loud and then, after awhile, it goes away temporarily only to start up again.
View 5 RepliesWe are newer to hybrids. We purchased a used 2012 prius approximately 1 year ago. Within the past year, we have replaced the headlights approximately 6 times. Last month we replaced both front lights and tonight, out of nowhere 3 lights burnt out (both headlights and 1 bright light). It was dark outside and we live in a rural area so we had to drive 90 miles with 1 bright and the 2 day time lamps.
We maybe have changed bulbs in other vehicles once every couple of years and this is a monthly thing with our Prius. They aren't cheap so it's frustrating. My husband has been changing the bulbs and he does not touch the glass.
Just bought a 2010 Prius with 48k miles. I'm noticing what feels like a slight slipping when rapidly accelerating, or that's what I would call it in any other car. It's barely noticeable, and my only concern is if this is the beginning of a transmission issue.
View 19 RepliesI recently was stuck in a traffic jam in the middle of the Mojave desert. Outside temp was about 102 and we crept along for maybe 15 minutes going no more than 5-10 mph. I had the air conditioning on. I noticed the power bars were rapidly disappearing and got worried that I would lose the battery if I didn't get moving. Needless to say, I finally was able to speed up and the bars came back. (dropped to 2 bars).

I had the belt replaced but problem is still there. toyota is recommending to replace the tensioner assembly quoted for 1200. is that a bit high? low?
I have reviewed pervious post with related problems but my "cricket" is on when it has a load on or not... with a/c on or off.. Any online for 2007 manuals? the online link under the stickys does not work, it dispalys a message "site has been hacked".
I just get a hand of a brake blinkers module that when you connected parallel to the brake lights it will blinks and strobes like emergency vehicles. When brake is pressed, the brake lights blinks rapidly and strobes random pattern. It gives more visibility instead just stay on.
View 9 Replies2013 Prius 3 making a squealing or rattling noise when accelerating after car is warmed up. It only does it when the car is up to temperature and when you accelerate slightly harder, like going up a hill or something. It sounds like a pulley or something squealing. It has been to the dealer and of course they couldn't duplicate the noise or see anything wrong. Not to sound funny, but it actually sounds like a hamster running on a wheel. It is very annoying. It is not a constant noise, it only happens under load. It gets louder when the ac is on as well. If you let off the accelerator when it starts the noise goes away. I don't know of it matters but our car has the forged 17" wheels on it from the factory, and the car has 8600 miles on it.
View 19 RepliesSlightly shaking engine and rattling noise on acceleration,it happens when the car is hot and especially when the battery level is very low ,I guess is when as more load . If I accelerate and keep it steady at 20mph I can feel a constant vibration but goes away once accelerating more....like if you're driving on a rippled surface ....that is only when engine is on , doesn't happen on electric only.
The noise it sound like a tapping coming from the engine when slowly accelerating from 0 that goes away as soon I give more gas ,is annoying wile in the traffic.? Can the sparks plugs be the problem?they been changed 120k ago.....,I cleaned the egv pipe but problem still there. Like I said is only when the engine is up to running temperature.
I have a 2010 Corolla S Got it brand new in november of 2009. Its been 5 years since I had it and never had this problem.
So this has been happening for a month now, and I can't figure out what it is? It only sounds at first startup of the day when the engine is cold and only sounds off for 1 second right when you start the car.
I was wondering if this problem is the "Barking" noise that keeps coming up the search or is it another problem. I will include a link to the video down below.
To start off, the Prius is 2010 Prius II and has 120k miles on it. Great Car. Only other problem was AC compressor dying at 90k.
The chirping noise happens when the brake pedal is pressed and does not go away until the release the pedal. It makes the noise regardless of whether the car is on or off.
It makes the noise when the car is stopped and or when the mechanical brake engage at between 0 and 6 mph.
Noise does not occur when the brake switch is removed. Not valid solution since the brake lights will stay on. It does not affect the performance of braking.

Only on the lowest two settings fan makes a chirping noise, it is a lot worse with the colder weather. It has been going on for over a year now and when I get the oil change I bring it up and they refuse that they hear anything... Finally made appointment for it and they still claim they hear nothing. It sounds exactly like the link here on YouTube... there is also videos on YouTube with tacoma's with the same problem but there is a Toyota Service Bulletin for it.
View 2 RepliesMostly while negotiating in very crude camp ground roadways, we started to hear a new noise. This started before the incident I will be reporting in my third thread, so I do not attribute this noise to that incident. The noise seems to come from applying the brake when the car is already stopped or nearly stopped. Its a bit of a chirp, but it is a low-throated chirp. It think they come in twos, "chirp, chirp."
View 6 RepliesThere is a pretty loud continuous clicking noise lasting about 30 seconds (not necessarily a bad one - just annoying) that comes on every thirty seconds to a minute when I'm driving my Prius. It happens more often now than it did 10,000 miles ago.
It also happens without fail for a few seconds every time I brake. Is this a normal noise? I fear it may be associated with the brake actuator--which the chirping noise is associated with.
If I press firmly on the brakes (which is rare), they chirp. Toyota released a bulletin on it. TSB BR001-07
