Prius (2010-12) :: A/C Compressor Not Turning On

My 2010 Prius A/C compressor isn't working. It is not turning on.

View 2 RepliesI have had my 2011 Prius for about half a year. Lately, I noticed a louder than normal AC compressor. It is very loud, and I have driven it in hot weather before so I think I know what it normally sounds like.
View 8 RepliesI've bought a used Prius 2010 V this winter and didn't use AC until summer. Now that it's summer I have noticed that AC compressor is pretty loud (esp. when turned on for a few seconds) - loud enough that it can be heard even when engine is running but faintly. Some vibration from compressor also can be felt when not moving (parked) and touching brake pedal. Noise is about as loud as mobile phone left on vibrate on a wooden desk, but higher pitch and a bit muffled, or as loud as a climate control fan on max setting. Would that be normal?
View 9 RepliesI have a 2013 Prius with few miles. It seems like the air conditioner compressor makes a very loud humming noise. It's a little annoying inside, but outside it is really loud. I know it is running off an electric motor and I expect that to make some noise, but this seems excessive. Is this normal? Also, the compressor keeps running all the time. I thought they were supposed to cycle on and off. It seems like all air conditioning compressors do this to conserve energy, even a house air conditioning unit.
View 19 RepliesThe dealer diagnosed my a/c as needing a new compressor and clutch. I had an a/c specialty shop install a remanufactured compressor and clutch. however, they could not get the compressor to kick on. I checked all fuses (all are good).
I checked the compressor continuity (good, 0 ohms). I checked the plug where the compressor clutch plugs in (it reads 12 volts). the funny thing is, it reads 12 volts anytime the engine is running (even if the climatroinc is turned off). I am definitely not an a/c expert and really don't know how this stuff works.
I'm trying to bring fresh air at ambient temperature into the cab, but even on Econ and Lo, incoming air is a good 20 degrees F warmer than outside, even after 20 minutes or so giving the system time to cool off. The dealer says this is normal. Is there no way to get cool outside air in through the ventilation system without turning on the compressor?
View 15 RepliesI have a warm engine (>150 f), the heat turned off, battery at max full, and a 10 mile coast downhill at 30 mph max, but the stupid ICE keeps turning itself on (SG says 5 - 10 hp doing nothing) and wasting gas. The only way I can find to shut the stupid thing off is to come to a full stop, wait a few seconds, the ICE shuts down, then I can coast a while more till it comes back on , repeat etc. That is ridiculous. Maybe a switch that tells the engine the car is stopped? Maybe an ICE override. Must be a way to defeat this. It can't be doing anything useful.
View 12 RepliesWhen driving, I notice when the ICE kicks on. I assume this is normal but just want to hear from others.
View 17 RepliesI have a 2009 VW Tiguan SE with about 85K on it. Yesterday driving to work the alternator/ac belt broke, after replacing the belt the AC compressor will not turn on. The AC was running fine up until the belt broke, so far I have checked all the fuses and the codes, no bad fuses and no codes. I read in the manual about a compressor shaft overload protection but it doesn't go into detail what this is or how to reset it. I could imagine that since the belt broke while the AC was on the system could think there is an issue with the compressor and shut it off but I can't figure out what to check or how to reset it. The AC system was checked a few months ago and has been producing cold air so I don't think there is a coolant level issue.
View 2 RepliesLast November I had a left front end collision with another car. The other driver was at fault and their insurance covered everything. The car was in the shop almost 2 months.
Now it seems back to normal except the climate control randomly shuts off every so often. I usually leave it on Auto. After the car has been off overnight or sometimes just a few hours, I notice the climate control is off. After turning it back on, the temperature setting has been reset to 75. It happens about once a week. Doesn't seem to be related to outside temperatures.
Should I take it to the dealer for a check or back to the body shop? The body shop offers a lifetime warranty, but I doubt they could diagnose something intermittent like this.
I replaced the 12V battery yesterday with a new one, and the car (2010 Prius Model III w Navigation), will turn on and off, but the ICE is not turning on automatically upon start-up, as it usually does. I can get the ICE to start by stepping on the gas pedal while in park, although it seems to die within a few seconds if I remove my foot.
View 16 RepliesMy 2011 Prius has delayed headlight turn off, which is nice once in a very great while. I have looked through the manuals but have not found any method to remove the delay so headlights just go on and off with ignition, like my 2006 used to do. There is nothing on the headlight/turn signal arm to adjust, so assume delay is "hard wired" into the Prius software. Of course I can turn headlight switch on off every time, but wondered if there is a delay kill.
View 9 RepliesThere must be a way to "turn her off" but I have not found it in the book. When I want to "cancel" the directions being given, what's the secret?
View 2 RepliesWhen the front defroster is on, a little orange LED is lit on the defroster button.
When I press the Off button for the AC system, the orange LED stays lit on the front defroster button.
Is this normal?
When I am at idle, the compressor keeps turning on and off every few seconds. It seems to work fine while driving. What do I need to do to fix this?
View 14 Replies98 e150 - 4.6l, 185k, My air started blowing warm the other day. It worked perfectly fine. I checked the compressor to see if it was turning. Nope! I am wondering if it could be the clutch?
I replaced the alternator and changed the serpentine belt a couple of months ago and noticed a very slight whining sound sometime after I did this. I thought something might be going and just ignored it and said to myself, that's all the new tread in the new belt whining a little. Could be! not sure.
Anyway, where could I possibly start an easy procedure to see why the failure in the compressor not turning? Compressor is a lot harder to get at than an alternator!
When slowing to a stop and turning to the right, there is a ticking sound (not loud) coming from the front. The ticking rate slows as the wheel slows and continues until almost stopped. Break pedal pressure does not affect the sound. The dealer tech heard the sound on a demo drive but they had no clue what it was and found nothing wrong.
The tech, sitting in the right seat thought the sound was coming from the left side. I hear it coming from the right side. Maybe that means it comes from the middle? I only hear it when coming to a stop. Maybe road noise covers it up at higher speed but I don't know.
Currently at about 38,000 miles.
The past week I drove the 1800miles. This afternoon I went out, pushed power button, get out and clean windshield off and ICE turns on with this clunk clunk noise, shook the car like a sob too. Checked oil and it showed a clear metallic gray/Black tint with end the light tan oil.
View 3 RepliesI just noticed if I turn off the car without putting it in park it would do it automatically. Is that safe or do you always put it in park first?
View 5 RepliesLast night the TPMS light came on on my month old 2010 Prius. I checked all the tire pressures and they we @ 38 rear and 40 front.
TPMS light went off after 4-5 times of turning the car on/off.
What might have been the problem? Is it something I need to be concerned about?
Having trouble with the EV system? Its suppose to shut down at 25 MPH. Mine on a regular bases shuts down at 10 MPH. Also shuts down when turning corners. Getting the run around with the Toyota Dealer.
