My 2011 is at 45k miles now and I've just noticed that my radiator coolant is just under the 'low' mark and my inverter coolant is on the 'low' line. I've had all regular maintenance done, never done any of it myself just because I'm not confident enough in myself to think I won't mess something up. Should I be concerned about having 'low' coolant levels?
View 19 RepliesI drive a 1999 Chevy Malibu. My car overheated the other day so I pulled over and realized the overflow was bone dry. So I added water and finished my trip. By the time I got there the car was overheating again and the overflow was again empty. I have changed the water pump, the thermostat, and the overflow cap. Whats happening now is when I crank it the car Idles fine until it gets warm, then steam starts to come out of the overflow hose coming from the cap. If I drive it not only steam but all my coolant just starts pouring out of this thing. I was told this might mean a busted head, but there is no coolant in my oil or water coming out of my exhaust.
View 1 RepliesI didn't realize the 6.7 had two places that you need to monitor your coolant level. I've kept an eye on my coolant reservoir for the rad due to radiator failures reported but just today noticed there was another one for the intercooler. Mine was quite low. I'm sure most of you knew it was there but for those that didn't, keep that baby topped up I can't imagine having a hot intercooler is good.
View 7 RepliesI have a 2014 elantra limited and have noticed heater issues. The heat never gets hot until the temp is set to higher levels. For example 25c /77 f is just lukewarm I need to set the temp up as high as 28c/82f or higher to get decent heat. Anything below 24c is like having the air conditioning on. It also seems to fluctuate at time, blowing warmer air and then turning cold. Coolant is topped up, no visible leaks i.e., nothing on the garage floor.

View 17 RepliesWe have a 2010 Prius with ~120k miles and a supposed oil leak; about half a quart for the last 500 miles. Ongoing for some unknown period of time. I haven't seen any oil on the ground for the past week. Furthermore, the engine coolant is very low. The dealer believes the "seepage" is due to head gasket, which would cost $2400 to repair.
This isn't my car (my gen 2 runs great), but it reminds me of my beloved 1996 Subaru which had to be let go because of an expensive head gasket and emissions failure. We expected the Toyota engine to last much longer. So far, the Prius hasn't thrown any check engine lights. Is this unusual? Any signs I can look for that might confirm the head gasket leak or suggest a less expensive diagnosis?
My 2010 with 130,000 miles has no heat. I had it flushed at the dealer and recall work done last June as part of the maintenance sched and did not try to use the heat until a few weeks ago. I have taken it to the dealer twice. They have in order bled the coolant system, replaced the coolant and then changed the thermostat at the second visit. The catch is that each time they have done this the heat returns and by the next day or so the heat is gone--It has not been very cold yet so we have not needed to use the heat every day. I am wondering if the system is hard to bleed?

View 4 RepliesAs a Prius driver, I have driven my 2012 Prius more than 110,000 miles. I love the car and have a suggestion on improvement - Create new software to allow the driver to monitor engine coolant temperature and RPM from either the dash display or touch screen display.
I like knowing if my car engine is up to temperature before punching it on the freeway ramp or about to overheat before an idiot light goes on.
It has been documented that the computer will let the ICE coolant cool to a lower temperature before mandating it to fire up again to maintain that lower limit.
Why isn't this done in other modes? Is this compromising anything when it comes to emission or engine protection? Since full power is available in ECO mode, one can force the ICE to drive with full output, even when it is a little cold.
Recently we have had heat wave conditions with the equivalent of plus 110 degree F weather. I noticed that for the first time my inverter coolant temperature reached 140 degrees F. I have had some weird messages and the yellow triangle pop up when the physical brakes cut in. The message comes and goes so quickly all we could read was something about "ID Block". No codes were thrown up. I believe this is due to heat "stress".
I am considering obtaining a small radiator/heat exchanger, installing it in the space before the radiator and diverting the inverter coolant to it for extra cooling. Is there any impediment or down side to this?
I remember that my 2005 Prius had a short whirring noise when I shut it off, as some coolant fluid was moved around.
But my 2010 Prius has been pretty quiet at shut-down, until recently (has it always been there, or now that it's cold weather?) I noticed there's a very faint whirring noise coming from the engine compartment at shut-down. It lasts for quite a while -- almost a minute, then stops.
I have a 2011 Prius and it's started ignoring me when I try to put it into gear. It doesn't happen all of the time, and when I took it to a dealer, they couldn't duplicate the problem.

I didn't notice when I was at the dealership, but when I was playing around with the car parked in my garage, I noticed the car gets quite noisy when then a/c comes on... Is this normal?????
I have a 2011 Prius 3, just took in to get my tires rotated at 65k to an independent mechanic for the first time and he said they saw traces of oil but couldn't determine where it was coming from. They cleaned it up and want me to bring it back after driving it 150-200 miles to try to trace it.
My question is, is this typical for a 2011 Prius 3 with 65k? I had Toyota check everything when I bought the car at 61k and they didn't find anything wrong.
The mechanic did say it could be because of the cold something may have happened. Just want to make sure I'm not getting swindled here before trusting this mechanic.
2011 Prius has about 85K miles on it, and we have gone through about 8 pairs of running headlamp bulbs. I called the dealership and they said that there is no known issue for this. Sure seems like a voltage regulator-type issue. Is it possible that a single wiring harness can affect both left and right? It's strange, because if the left one blows today, the right one will blow within a day or two. I've tried every brand of bulb, and no, I do not touch the glass with my hands.
View 19 RepliesI love my 2011 Prius. It's relatively quiet in low speed drive and can't beat those MPGs. One thing that does bother me though is how bumpy the car rides. It is somewhat tolerable in the summer and fall, but as soon as I start driving on winter roads I feel like I'm riding on a tin can, feeling every single road bumps. Does the car usually feel the same for others or I need to change someone on my car. I still have the factory Assurance tires (36K miles). Are those the problem or should I get the struts checked (even though I'm pretty sure they're fine)?

View 19 RepliesLast night we had torrential rains in Baltimore. This morning there were drops of water on the CD's on my passenger side seat, and the seat itself was pretty damp. Also water on the floor near the passengers' side door.
I checked the windows and the sunroof and all were completely closed. I had opened the internal slider on the sunroof yesterday to get some light. Usually I keep the slider closed. Maybe it was leaking even before yesterday, but I didn't notice it because the slider was catching the water.
Very disappointing. My 2011 Prius is less than a year old. I got the sunroof because of the solar cooling, which I like. I didn't think I'd have a problem with a well built car like the Prius, which I am otherwise very pleased with.
I'll wait until the next heavy rain, see if I can pinpoint the exact source of the leak, and then have it repaired while still under warranty.
On my 2011 Three with standard halogen headlights, I have been experiencing headlamp burnouts at least once a year. Other than the usual precautions while swapping them (i.e., wear clean gloves and never touch the bulb with bare hands), I don't think I'm doing anything unusual.
