My 2005 Prius shakes and makes a weird noise when I go to start it up in the morning. This usually only occurs from cold start in the mornings. Once I warm it up for ~2-3 mins all seems to be well. No CEL or anything of that nature. Trying to troubleshoot what the problem is with these cold startups. (76K)

View 6 RepliesEarlier this morning when it was about 14 degrees F out, I got in my car to go to work. I noticed there was snow on the windows. In my early morning stupor, I thought it was light enough for the windshield wipers to remove. So as soon as I started my car with my foot pressing on the brakes, I immediately turned on the wipers--it was virtually done at the same time. I saw the wipers start to go up but struggled to lift the heavier-than-expected snow. Then I felt the brake pedal pushing back a bit and that's when the car dying down on me. A bunch of dashboard lights came on while other dashboard lights faded out.. Eventually, everything faded out.
The only light I remember that was on was on the Push Start button.
At some point, within a few minutes as I was trying to figure things out in this panic, I put the FOB key into the slot (it's usually kept in my pocket) and then I started my car as normal. I started up but I noticed everything dashboard light was on while it said my gas was near-empty (It was last seen last full).
I turned my car back off again. Then I turned it back on and, after a few strange dashboard lights switching on and off, my car started to resume normally. The gas tank was reading as expected.
After a few minutes of making sure everything was working just fine, I drove my usual 30 miles to work and here I am now trying to figure out why..
I have a toyota prius 2005. i bought two days ago, and i drove it and it was ok.. battery was checked and engine and they were all OK when i bought it.. next morning, i tried to get it work but there was no power at all.. remote control just didn't respond and the car didn't start. It looked completely dead. then suddenly it just started working. tonight, same problem occurred. I put the key in for around a min and then it worked. Is there something going on at night for that car?! does it go into a sleep mode or something?! and how can u make it work again?

The first 10 or 15 seconds after it is on, there is no problem as soon as the engine wants to turn on (engage) I hear the noise. There is no engine light or triangle alarm on. What is going on?
View 7 RepliesI have a f350 6.7l powerstroke diesel. It has been shaking real bad sometimes to the point of going only 15-20mph. And sometimes while it shakes it makes a rattling noise in engine area. The weird thing is that it doesn't do it all the time. We have noticed it mostly when gas gets low.
View 3 Repliesit was warmer the day than it usually was so it dosnt make the noise as bad however there is usually a lot of clatter/knock from the engine when cold. does it at idle and while accelerating. it gets less once the engine warms up but has been doing it for a while. car has 93k miles and synthetic oil is used. there is also a metal rattle sound almost like a heat shield that is loose. idk if that is part of the engine issue or not. but it only happens in winter or when temps fall below 60 degrees. kinda hard to hear on the vid but its there.

I know the brakes are different, so I'm not sure if this is normal or if it means my brake pads need replacing? Car didn't come with an owners manual .
View 6 RepliesI have an 02 Passat GLS. Its seems that when uts really cold out and I got to start my car in the morning it lets out a squealing noise. I just had my engine serviced so I doubt its any of the belts but I dont know for certain. Any VW buffs out there who know?
View 1 RepliesI have a 1996 Toyota Camry with 200k miles on it. It has been giving me trouble starting for a while and I was advised to replace my battery during my last oil change. The problem is when I try to start it does not start for a while. It makes a noise and tiisssssss and stop. tissssss and stop. But then third or fourth try, it works. I installed a new battery and I am still having the same problem. One cold day, it never started no matter how many times I tried. My roommate who is an aerospace engineering PhD candidate came out of the apartment with a teapot full of how water and poured it onto the terminals. For record, terminals are clean. When he did that, it worked.
What is wrong with car?
My car has been making a weird squeaking noise when I start it up sometimes in the morning. It doesn't happen all the time, and my car has been running great. I drive a 2010 Corolla S. It has about 18,000 miles on it. I just had the Engine Drive Belt Replaced last month. It almost sounds like a belt is causing the noise. I'm going to mention it to the Dealer next time I take it in for a oil change.
View 12 RepliesWent to leave this morning and my '05 with 135K would crank but not start. Pulled air cleaner and sprayed a little starting fluid and it fired some so I had a feeling it was fuel related. Reset the fuel cut-out with no luck. I then remember seeing the issues on the forum about the fuel pump driver module corrosion and failures. Bought a new one at the local dealer, installed it and it fired right up.
Pics below...from the side it didn't look to bad but was holed through on the bottom. I highly recommend replacing this if you live in the rust belt.
I am experiencing a fan noise that precedes the ICE during morning startup. It sounds like a model airplane with a cheap, buzzy propeller. It is not the cabin blower and it comes from the front of the car. It goes for about 10sec and then the ICE fires up, drowning out the fan noise, which I presume fades out. And then I don't hear it again when the ICE shuts off. I also don't hear it at a stop light or subsequent restarts. Seemingly, it only does it after it has sat overnight.
It wasn't always like this. Nothing has changed in my routine. Build date Sep 09. 10000km.
I'm experiencing vibration somewhere under the hood during start. I recently replaced the serp. belt and think it could be over-tensioned.
Possible?

Or just the new belt needs to stretch?
Every now and then I have rattling noise when trying to start on a cold start in the morning. Mainly just sounds like a dry start. Battery is good, oil is full (high mileage Valvoline 5W20). Ive tried 5W-30 and it didn't do anything, just made the mpgs about 1 less.
Ive had the car fixed for the main TSB issue with the starter/camshaft so that is not it, which caused a full on grinding noise.
Everyday commuter car, use 87 chevron gas always, and I just used Lucas gas additive the last two fill ups (used normally every 1k miles) and still getting the noise every now and then in the morning. Are there any better injector cleaners out there?
Should I get the fuel injectors fully 3step cleaned? when talking to the service rep at brake-masters, they stated that I should use 91 premium gas to work with dry starts to burn off extra carbon buildup. Wasn't sure if that was a good idea for a 09 corolla S?
93k miles, new spark plugs last week, oil changes every 3k.
Recently I've noticed more that when we first start the hyundai in the morning or after sitting a while and we use the brakes it grinds/ squeals a little and then doesn't after about 2 or 3 miles. Is this something to get checked out or should I spray something on my brakes to lubricate?
My next step that I though of was to get a simple automatic car wash cause it's been a bad winter in Rhode Island and the street shave been flooded with rock salt. I figure that might cause some friction under the pads.
What is this metal on metal noise...you hear it the best around the 7-12 second mark...it is especially loud on cold start in the morning when you put the car in "drive" but don't move the car forward. It also is prevalent on hot days when you park the car outside and just start the car. The sound gets louder when you turn on the a/c during the hot day.

My G1 prius (2001) started making a grinding noise when I start it up in the morning. There are no warning lights (yet) and it drives fine, but that noise can't be good -- something will fail shortly. I've searched the internet quite thoroughly and there was one similar problem reported, which ended up being linked to the ABS pump. The noise seems to come from the inverter, or somewhere under the inverter. I took a video of it and posted it here.
View 19 RepliesThis car has been sitting in my car porch for a little over two months. I would start it once every 1 or 2 weeks and let it run for a minute. I assume the battery was not at the best of it shape since every time I started the car, it would take a little more time, but the car would end up starting just fine. After a two weeks break, the power was down and nothing would turn on at all. I jump started the Camry with cables connected to my own car and thought I would start the Camry and take it for a ride, make sure the battery gets a chance to recharge.
But nothing happened when I turn the key, nothing but this "machine gun"-like noise ( which you can hear on the video [URL] .... don't know if by starting the car without driving it for two month, I did not give a chance to the car to recharge the battery, which led to the total loss of power, but this does not explain why when jump started, the engine won't turn on, and does not explain this sound I hear...
I bought a 2005 prii with 145k miles about a month ago and have since driven it 1,200 miles. A few days ago, the red triangle light came on when I started the car in the morning. I had to get to work so I unplugged the negative on the 12v and reconnected it. It started and it drove just fine. I get off work and the same thing happens. I did the same thing and drove home just fine. I then ordered a optima yellow top from elearnaid and it was shipped and arrived in 1 day!!!
I installed the battery this morning and called the dealer to notify them of my situation. The light didn't come on so I thought it may just be the 12v. But of course I didn't wanna run out of warranty and then the hv battery completely goes bad. The dealer tells me to bring it in and I did. They "diagnosed" the car and could not "repeat" what had happened to me. They said because I unplugged the 12v, it erased any codes. I thought it's always saved on the ECU? anyways, I told them about installing a new 12v battery and they said, "that must be it." I'm at 147k miles right now and I don't want my 150k / 10 year warranty to expire before something really goes wrong with the hv battery.
Am I just screwed and hope for the best for miles to come? Or is there a Toyota number I can call to tell them of the situation? I'm almost hopeful that it was only because of the 12v but at the same time, I have doubts.
I have a 2005 Prius with about 170,000 km on it. I bought it two years ago used at 150,000 km. Everything worked fine for about 8 months, them I noticed the main battery started to drain on first start in the morning after driving a short distance. It would drop down to about 2-3 bars most days, especially on cold mornings. After reading on this forum for a bit I turned off the key locator, and it went back to normal for about 6 months, at which point it started dropping again. I haven't had any warning lights come on yet.
I replaced the 12 V battery, as recommended here with an Optima Yellow Top, even though the original one showed no voltage drop. It actually tested higher than the new Yellow Top I got. My fear is that the traction battery is losing modules. I'm planning on testing them soon.
