Jan 7, 2015
I bought this second hand 2008 Prius some few months ago. I can't start my 2008 Prius without inserting the key into the slot. I want to start the car with the key in my body, how do i do it? I have changed the fob battery, the key is doing every other thing, but i must insert it into the slot before i can the start the car

I'm having trouble with the dash slot. The car will start if the key is just in my pocket, but when I go to put the key fob in the slot, the car will not start. Normally this isn't a problem for me because I never take the key out of my pocket, but when I went to try and get a remote starter installed, they said the dash slot needs to work correctly in order for them to install the starter.

I have to use the mechanical key on the SKS to open the door, then plug into the slot on dashboard to start the 2004. Replaced battery, nothing changed.
There are two causes I suspect:
1. The CR2023 Battery was bought on Amazon for cheap, about 6 month ago. What's the voltage should be if no load?
2. The plastic cover on the SKS was broken. It could be that rain or not-so-clean-water gets into the electronic part.

My wife has a 2008 RX350. I don't recall this vehicle having a single warning chime whenever you install/remove the key from the ignition. I can't find anything in the manual or on google. Is this normal or does it indicate a problem?

I own a 2004 Prius II. It has 140,000 miles on . I've changed the 12 volt battery last year and that has been the worst of isuues. However, my alarm has been going off after I get out of my car after driving it and it won't stop
untill I put the key FOB back in the slot and start the the car up. I have to leave the key FOB in the slot all night to stop it from going off all night long. I changed key FOBs and thought I had fixed the issue but after a long drive I came home got out of car and its started again. I have the other posts on this subject and tried all of the fixes except disconnecting the alarm Will try and take it to a dealership but not confident they can fix it.

Prius owner, Just bought it 3 days ago! 2007 no nav system, but the key fob is the silver logo and has the key button on the lower dash...so I assume it is a smart key system. However, the key fob will not unlock or lock the car, the panic button doesn't work either. The car will only start with the fob in the slot.
Why will it start the car only in the slot? I changed the battery out in the fob and it still didn't lock/unlock. I didn't try the smart key start with the new battery...I don't even know if I have a smart start. Why does it not open/lock the car?

I was trying to change my disk from 12.1 to 13.1 in my 2008 GS 350 AWD. so I ejected the disk via the screen, took it out and put the new one in. Started making a continuous clicking sound and then took the disk half-way out then in then totally out. Ok, maybe a bad disk so I tried to put 12.1 back in and same thing happened. Ok now I tired the original disk that came with the car. Same thing. Very odd. It worked fine up until the second I took it off.

I have just noticed that my C4 does not have a slot on the dashboard to insert the Smart Start key. What do you do when the battery in the key fob runs so low (or out) so that the car won't recognize the signal and you need to get in and around somewhere?
I had this issue once in a while with my '05, where the battery got low or some outside radio signal was interfering with the communication, requiring 1) the use of the manual key, 2) inserting the key fob into the slot so the car would start. My key fob on my C4 does have the manual entry key, but no place to insert it.
Also, when leaving the car at the car wash, I would leave the key in the slot so the workers could start the car up to move it as needed.

I got in my car yesterday morning, put my foot on the brake and pushed the "start" button. The car's dashboard lit up, almost entirely, and stayed that way with a large exclamation point within a triangle (red) lit up as well. I pulled out my owner's manual and could find no explanation for the combination of these symbols, only their main uses.
When I went to turn the car back off, the radio came on and the transmission symbols (park, drive, reverse, neutral) all lit up and stayed on with the key slot blinking. I was very confused, so I put my foot back on the brake and pushed the start button, again. At this point, please refer back to earlier in this post to the second sentence and re-read everything to this point.
At this point, I thought maybe the vehicle needed its key put in the ignition for a recognition situation? One of my key batteries is already dead and the second one needs replacing, soon. The key became LOCKED in the ignition. After pushing the start button and off button several more times, a message appeared on my touch-screen saying something about a problem with the parking brake pedal being applied firmly while on a flat surface. Tried that, with no results. Eventually, I was able to remove the key and turn the vehicle off.
After calling the service shop, I was told to get the car towed in (it sits in the garage, facing inward, and the gear shift does not work!), and then had to explain that I couldn't put the car in neutral to remove it from the garage.
I also need new tires, these are worn through and I haven't even finished paying off the vehicle! One of the rubber strips on the roof has come off and I've stored it in the back of the vehicle for the past year or so, and inspection has to take place before Sept. 1, 2011.
Is it the small battery for starting the car, and can I replace this myself, or should I leave it up to the professionals because it is part of the hybrid synergy system and is still under the 8-year, 100,000 mile?

Using one of those GPS mounts that goes into your CD player slot? I need a new mount for my Garmin in my C and was wondering if they work well.

My key only works now if I push it in the slot next to the steering wheel. I never had trouble with it before. It also only works intermittently for locking/unlocking the doors. Do I need a new key?

One day, I drove my Prius with my key fob in pocket. Parked the car. Turned off the power. Opened the driver side door to get off. Heard the continuous beep of "key fob in the slot" warning. I had never heard of it so I did not what it was. Tried closing / opening the door several times. The warning kept coming when I opened it. Tried getting off the car, pushed the lock button. It locked with lock beep normally.
After a few hours, I found the battery was dead. Had it jump started and the problem had not come back for a few weeks.

this is the second time this has happened to me: I stopped at a beach access to relax & look at the ocean, turned car off but left key in as was staying in car. When I decided to leave car would not start, dash lights would come on but that was all. Hit power button again lights went off but could not get key out of ignition. After several tries I call AAA, they charged something under the hood & said I needed a new battery. The first time this happened was several months ago & I never replaced the battery. When I got home I did the self check of the voltage & it was 12.8 & car is starting fine. Is this some kind of a computer glitch?

Prius a/c start to blow hot air after driving the car for 30 min. In the next day when i start the car, it blowing cold air.
A/C starts to blow warm air if i drive the car more than 30min. look like once the engine heats up its start to blow hot air. What will be the issue?
Only twice i got the VSC and Engine Check light. but it went off after 2 days. i Took it to the auto shop and did a scan, they said its giving lots of code (codes like: C1241, U0073, U0123,U0124, U0126, U0293, U0111) and they have reset the codes. and told if you get warning lights again then they can try.

I have a 2008 Prius. I drove it around in Florida for a few days and everything ran great, but about 4 hours into the trip back to Minnesota, the red ! triangle light came on with a message on the display screen. It said "There is a problem with the transmission "P" lock mechanism Park your your car on a flat surface and fully apply the parking brake." This happened as I was driving, so I pulled over and did what it told me. After shutting down the car, I tried starting it back up and none of the gears worked. P, R, D, or B.
The message still displayed and the red ! light was still on. After shutting it on off several times, it finally started. No warnings. I found the nearest Toyota dealer and had them check it out. They found nothing but one short circuit, around the same time the warning lights would have gone on. I googled the problem, and it seemed like everyone was saying the problem is caused by a bad 12V battery, so I told the dealer to put in a new one. I was on the road again. However, the first stop I made for gas and sure enough, the light came back and I couldn't get it into a gear without restarting the car several times. I just hope I won't need to spend any more money on this 2 year old car.

I was out of town for about a week. I drive a 2008 Prius with about 35k miles and no previous issues. I get back tonight and go to open the door with keyless entry. Nothing, doors wont open. I hadn't replaced the batteries in the remote since I bought it, so I figured it was just that. I use the key to manually open the doors. I then go to start the car. Nothing. No lights, no noises, literally nothing happens. I figure, perhaps I left a light on while I was away and the 12V battery is drained. It is quite the rare thing, but it has happened a few times in the past. Usually I would catch it the next day and be ok, so maybe a light was on for a week and that did it.
So at this point I assume it's just a dead 12 V battery. I ask my friend to give me a jump. We open the hood, connect up the jumper cables in this order : + Prius, + and - to his battery, then - to the Prius frame. Quite a few sparks fly, which seemed like more than what I was used to seeing, but it doesn't seem too outrageous. I try to start the car and nothing happens. My friend then tells me he accidentally hooked up the jumper cables backwards. (I know now this is bad, and may be the source of the problem but hear the rest of the story to get a complete picture of what's going on).
So we swap them on his battery and try again. I put my foot on the break and push the power button. His car is still running in the background. The power button LED then turns green, and that is it. No noise or anything else. I then (while keeping my foot on the break still), push the power button again. This time the power button LED turns orange, the parking break P LED turns on green and the check engine light on the dash turns on. Also I think the car also makes the normal humming sound we are used to hearing when it turns on. No other lights are on at this point. The main display doesn't come on, nor does the interior lights work, or anything else for that matter.
The only thing functioning from inside are those 3 lights. I turn the car off and we just figure it needs more time to charge. So we give it a few more minutes of charging and still the same thing. We notice a strange thing. We hear a clicking sound coming from the fuse box area of the car. Every 5 seconds or so, it sounds like a relay clicks, and then clicks off after 2 seconds or so, and this continues on. My friends engine sounds as if during those two seconds like it is sending current to my car (lower engine rpm). So it sounds as if the relay sends current somewhere for a few seconds and then no current goes to my car, 5 seconds later it sends current to my car then 2 seconds later no current, etc. This goes on continuously and we are not sure why.
We figure maybe a fuse is blown. My friend checks the fuses we think to check but can't seems to find anything wrong there. We then think maybe the power needs to be disconnected to the electronics to allow capacitors and what not to discharge. So we disconnect the lug from the jumping terminal (the one we connected the + jumper cable under the hood) for about 10 minutes. We reconnect the lug back 10 minutes later and try again. Same things with the lights and buttons pushing as before. The only difference this time is you can get these lights to turn on without having the jumper cables connected (as if some of the battery was charged).
Next we figure, maybe we just need to hook directly to the 12V battery in the "trunk". So we connect to that. Now, instead of having the relay tripping every few seconds we don't hear the relay tripping at all. And the engine rmps are operating constantly as if it is consistently drawing current (constantly lower rmp sounds). So that is different this time than when we connected to the post under the hood. So we continue running the car at high rmps for a few minutes and try again. Still the exact same thing with the lights.
Also during these tests the break pedal seems to put pressure on itself when you hit the power button a second time and the lights turn on. (This is just a detail to include, I'm not sure if there is anything useful to gain from knowing this). Anyway, I know the problem is most likely that everything was fine until my friend accidentally hooked his end of the jumper cables to his battery. But in the event that there is something else I should check.

Whats going on with my 2002 SC430. Every time someone (valet) puts the key in the door to unlock it, the car completely shuts down. The remote won't work. The only way to get it going again is to have the door popped open. This sets off the alarm but once the key is in the ignition and started, it's all good. What is going on and how to correct this?

My F150 4X4 would not start a few days ago, after only having turned it off a few minutes prior. The gauges would sweep wildly and get stuck at various positions. I checked the fuses and they were fine, then unplugged the battery for a bit and it started back up. Occasionally it won't start and i'll have to disconnect the battery again to get it to start.
I'm still having some strange electrical issues though. The radio no longer turns on unless the ignition is turned to AUX. My back up alarm for going in reverse doesn't come on anymore. The gauges take at least 10 seconds to wake up after starting the truck. The dashboard blinker indicators will randomly stop blinking or making any noise. I was thinking it could be the computer, but could it be something else?

I am new to VW. I have a 06 4mo and last week and then again today the key fob is not releasing all the way from the slot. It releases enough to not run the accessories but obviously I can't lock it like that. I tried turning it on and off, (PUSH IN AND OUT OF THE SLOT) moving it side to side a little/up and down and even move the steering wheel and re parking it... NOTHING..
I went in my house came back out about 15min later tried to just release it.. no release.. then moved it into Drive moved forward a few feet and reversed back into my spot and it released. Is this related to any other issue, I am taking it in for the parking brake light setting itself all of the sudden when i put it in park and i haven't touched it.
