Prius (2004-09) :: Whining Noise From Motor?
Apr 22, 2013
Just picked up a 05 with 99500 on it. Drives fantastic and previous to this I used to have an 05 way back that I drove new to 64k. Anyway I test drove it in the rain and with chatter between my wife and I with the sales rep I didn't notice it but now I found that there is a whining noise coming from the timing chain area of the motor. Its only when the car is on and it gets louder as you go towards the passenger side and away from the hybrid components. Here is the sound from my iphone near the motor.

Developed a whining type noise in my '07 prius engine compartment. Noise only there when gas pedal pressed. If I let off on gas the whining noise stops.

I am a Honda/Acura nerd. Decided to buy my friends 02 Celica that had piston slap from the famous oil consumption issue i learned about. Did a bunch of research and swapped in a Corolla motor. Everything seemed to go as normal, its in and running just fine. Only problem is now the power steering pump is making a very loud whining noise like its low on fluid.
Now first i must say the car ran, drove and turned just fine before the swap. No noises or issues aside from the piston slap. On the 1zzfe engine there is 2 bolts to remove the power steering pump and move it out of the way, easy enough.
My question is how did the power steering pump manage to get damaged? I've inspected under the car a bunch of times, inspected the top of the power steering pump, inspected everything i could looking for a problem. I just don't see any...no smashed hardlines, no leaks, has plenty of fluid, sensor is firmly plugged in. I notice when it is making the whining sound, the hardline that connects to the top of the pump is vibrating, which is what is making the sound i guess...if i crank the wheel all the way to the right or left it doesn't make the noise at all...

So I have had my 2005 Prius for over a year now. I love my car but after 7 months it made a whining noise coming from by the pulley. When I would accelerate the noise would get worse. Engine light came on tested and said loss of power. The car would not go up large hills it was gutless. So I parked it. I recently just replaced the pulley and now the noise is gone. I have been driving it short distances and at about 30 miles per hour the car would sputter and hesitate. I would let off the gas and push down on gas pedal lighter and it would go fine.

I have a 2005 Prius, purchased 5 months ago with 100k miles, and it currently has 106,000 miles.
The air conditioning blows cool, but not cold. When the A/C is turned on, it makes an unpleasant whining noise. I have a recording of it.
It did not make this noise 5 months ago, and the A/C output was colder then. I haven't used the A/C that much over the winter, but it's starting to warm up now and I've noticed it's not doing as well as it used to, and it isn't sounding very good either.

I know this noise is the Thermos Pump and it operates when I turn the car on and off. Question - is it failing - also a really annoying noise, but I'll put up with it as long as nothing's breaking.

Started the car the other day and a loud whining noise followed by the car "jumping" when I stepped on the gas. It would go/stop for a second, then shut down. Mechanic who is not a Prius expert said it was the tranny. He could put in a used one (77k miles). Car has 250k miles on it. Is it worth it? Or should I just part it out. I'm worried about things like the battery going next.

I need to diagnose an issue I've had with my 2007 Prius with 79,000 miles on it. Several months ago I noticed a distinctive whining/humming noise coming somewhere from the engine compartment of the car while driving. The noise may be present at lower speeds, but the volume of the noise appears to increase proportionately with my acceleration and as such is most noticeable at highway speeds of 50 - 70 miles per hour. As I accelerate faster, the noise level seems to increase. If I take my foot off the gas and coast, decreasing speed, the whining noise gets lower in volume. I believe I first noticed this noise about 6 months ago, but wasn't more proactive about it like I normally would be because at first the noise didn't seem overly loud and my extended warranty unfortunately was up once I hit 77,000 miles. Now 6 months after I first noticed the noise, I believe it's definitely louder than it was when I first heard it, so much so that I can pick it out over the radio being on at a decent volume.
After checking some forums I thought the culprit might be a wheel bearing. I took it into a local Midas shop at they informed me that my passenger-side front wheel bearing was actually breaking apart in pieces. Obviously I had that wheel bearing replaced but I was also hoping this was the source of the whining noise. Unfortunately that wasn't the case as driving it home the noise was still present. They also said the tires were not balanced properly (from my Toyota Dealership no less when I had them install new tires) so I had the tires rebalanced as well. They did take the car for a test drive but probably stop looking for issues with the car as soon as they saw the wheel bearing in that condition. Also that shop does not specialize in Prius' or hybrids so they might not be able to notice the noise that shouldn't be there like I can.
Other than wheel bearings, where this noise could be coming from. Some posts on here possibly pointed to the ICE water pump or transaxle fluid (which as far as I know has never been replaced since I bought the car new).

We've owned our 07 since purchased new in 06. It's always made this noise, but it used to be for a short period of time (1-2 min). Now it goes on and on for 5-10 min. It sounds like it's getting "stuck" and starting the cycle over.

I noticed that I have an unusual "rumble" noise coming from the location of my ac blower motor when it kicks in full blast. When the air temp comes down a bit and the AC slows down or if I switch the ac off full blast under climate control, the noise goes away. I have never noticed this before and am wondering if it is my ac blower motor starting to fail.

My 2005 Prius with 170k miles started making a whining noise after the car is warmed up. It is noticeable from about 30 mph, but mostly at higher speeds. When you take your foot off the accelerator the whining stops. It has gotten a bit louder over the past several weeks. I took it to a Toyota dealership and they want to replace the transmission because they believe it is a failure of the transmission's 2nd stage.

I have a 2004 accord exl (4 cyl) and it's making a whining noise. At 1st I thought it was the serpentine belt but then listen closer and it's seems like it's the water pump pulley (top pulley). I sprayed it with silicon oil and it minimized it but still comes back some with driving. The car has 110.5K miles on it. Kind of early for the water pump to go??? The belt is original and doesn't seem too bad. so I guess the bearings are going and it's time to change the belt and the water pump.

I've been noticing more and more lately that while my trucks in 1st or maybe 2nd gear, say, slowly coasting around a parking lot for example, there's a whining noise coming from either the rearend or the tranny (cant tell which). It gets louder and more high pitched as I move faster then disappears as soon as the truck shifts gears..
Is this something serious like my transmission on its way out? From what I gather a lot of people seem to have a similar thing going on.. From what I can remember my truck has done this since I bought it, but lately (and maybe its just me) I seem to notice it more like maybe its getting louder..

Purchased a 2004 Lincoln Aviator, AWD, 200k miles at an auction, I'm familiar with standard 4wd systems, but this auto AWD is confusing me.
Truck is auto engaging the AWD after 30 seconds of driving, if I reset it back to auto, it locks AWD 30 seconds later.
If I'm driving above 30-40 MPH this gives a pretty intense whining sound. I assume overheating the system. Last test drive put it in AWD disabled mode- I assume from overheating.
Truck wants to auto lock AWD no matter what, I don't seem to be able to do anything to prevent this other than turn OFF traction control- which then ends up disabling the auto AWD and telling me to see owners manual as well.
Truck does pull a little from needing ball joints, but would this tell the computer to engage the AWD constantly ? Any thoughts?
I'd also mention the ABS light is on- I'm guessing a speed sensor could throw this off as well? My code reader can't seem to connect to this aviator- it could connect to my old explorers, but not the aviator strangely enough.]

There is a whining noise related to vehicle speed and is most noticeable under the lightest acceleration at 40-50km/h, e.g., keeping a constant speed on the flat. It basically goes away on harder acceleration and is not there when decelerating. All other noise is as expected and not intrusive or unusual. Car is 2005 with 212k kms.
I changed the ATS fluid recently and didn't notice any metal "glitter" in the old fluid or much stuff on the magnet . It was just a mm of black sludgy stuff that didn't seem metallic. The fluid that came out was dark as I assume it hasn't been changed before no chunky globs or anything that would spell trouble..
What is causing this? The car is great other than this annoying noise which happens to be at speeds you normally do around town...

Over the past 2 weeks, started having a whining noise from front end. It seems to be coming from the front passenger side. The noise starts at around 30 mph and increases with speed. Very noticeable at highway speed. Sounded a bit like tire noise. I did rotate the tires, front to back, but noise persists from the front.

I've noticed more and more that when I am braking that I heard a high pitched whining noise. Sort of this ultrasonic type sound. It will only go away if I depress the brake pedal very firmly after being completely stopped. However every so often the firm press will not stop the noise. I hear it more in the evening on the way home than in the morning to work, though I may not be paying attention as much in the A.M. due to morning brain fog.
I don't hear it any other time. I'm worried something is wrong with my inverter.

So about 3 or so weeks ago I brought my 2006 GX470 into the Lexus stealership and had the pulley's, water pump, and timing belt replaced. Fast forward to this morning, about 300 miles driven and it suddenly when started today has a terrible whining sound and the battery light is on the dash.
I need to go over the invoice from what they did but I believe it was 4 different pulley's they wanted to replace. Not sure if it was anything on the accessory belt path, but I imagine if I call they will blame the alternator and tell me to shell out hundreds more?
I didn't run it long like that, only a minute or so. Popped the hood and I could smell the burning rubber smell so I quickly shut it off. Nothing *appeared* seized to me however.

I noticed my engine whine more than it usual since the last few days. So, I took it to the dealership and have them check. They said that it is the idler pulley going bad. Just want to see some info on diagnosis.

I began hearing a whining/humming sound just a couple of days ago esp when hitting 45mph and then would notice as I took my foot off of gas. I had hoped it was either tire or bearing related, but Toyota tried for over an hour and finally determined it was transmission related..a new transaxle assy etc would cost a total of 6500$. However, they said they did not think I had to do anything right now as everything is well lubricated..they even thought it could remain the way it is for a year to two. My Prius has 180,000miles on it. Should I attempt to find a salvage transaxle and risk having it put in? Or should I cut my losses and given up?
