Prius (2004-09) :: Volume Goes Up And Down On Its Own
Apr 11, 2012
My 2006 Prius MFD still works, but when I try to select a button (let's say fan speed of climate control), when I press a button on the left side of the screen, a button on the right side of the screen engages. This is somewhat common on all screens. It's like the programming of the X-Y coordinates of the pressed section of the screen is offset. If I press the medium fan speed, it highlights high speed. As I press buttons moving from the medium speed down to low, the selected buttons highlight from high down to medium. If I press the A/C button, the fresh/recirculating air button highlights and toggles.
The display has been working perfectly until now (150k miles). I did recently get my car detailed which entailed cleaning the MFD of fingerprints, but I can't imagine that did anything as this is a pressure sensitive display, rather than capacitive.
On another note, my volume knob is mostly useless and sometimes the volume goes up and down on its own. Luckily I still have control over volume from my steering wheel. However this is a rare occurrence.
I'm more worried about the MFD because of the expense of replacing it as well as its control of Air Conditioning (as it's getting hot in Texas these days). Most of the threads I've read talks about blacked out screens rather than a offset problem.

I have an 06 with 232,000. I was driving back home last week on a hot day and I noticed that the volume of air coming out of the a/c had gone down to about nothing. Doesn't matter what speed I put it on. I pulled over, pulled the cabin filter cleaned it and set back off. It seemed to be better for a while and then the same thing. Got home late that night, went out next morning and set off, all is well. I make frequent stops during the day for work, so all is well all day long. It was about an 1 1/2 hour drive home and about an hour into it same thing, no volume of air. Next morning, all is well. The fan seems to be working on all speeds, just no air, and only after it has been running for an hour. Shut it off for a while and everything is OK.

2004 CD Navigation. The issue is that I can't get the damn navigation volume to go any lower. The navigation volume is a touch too loud relative to the music volume. When I try to lower the navigation volume, it's already at the lowest mark on the scale.
(Yes I set the navigation volume while it's speaking). Maybe there is some way to reset the mid-point in volume and then I can lower it?

I have a 2004 Phaeton that the main volume knob has broken on. The dealer tells me that the only way that they can provide a replacement is with the whole unit (nav screen and all) at a cost of over $2000. It seems to me that this part MUST be available somewhere for $20 or so.

My Gen 1 stereo volume doesn't work at all anymore. Everything on the display is normal, the cassette player isn't making weird noises, but no radio or ipod hookup volume whatsoever. I'm worried someone who was testdriving it last week might have been pressing random buttons, but we've tried pressing most of 'em and still no dice. But also, it has been very humid this past week. Is this what happens when speakers die? Anything I should try?

03 GX470 w/ ML/Nav, weird radio problem - the radio cuts out at high volume, and only at high volume. It cuts out for 1 sec, then comes back, then cuts out, then comes back. Screen is on all the time while this happens, and occurs with all inputs - AM, FM, dvd. These are what I've done to diagnose so far:
1) disconnected battery for 10 minutes, no joy
2) replaced 2 fuses pertaining to radio, no joy
3) took out cd in dvd player, no joy
Here's what's weird: When I move the balance to have all/most of the sound coming from the rears, it doesn't cut out! See attached pic. I am able to get it to the 3rd line below the lowest; if I go above this line, it starts cutting out.
I did replace both front speakers a month ago, and was working fine all this time.
Bad amp? Bad front speakers?

The MFD works and I can change modes and stations, but no volume with the audio. Nothing for bluetooth handsfree, am/fm/aux/cd, etc.

I have a 2010 package IV not 4 because it is a 2010 and only 2010 used uppercase roman numerals for model designation, with jbl non nav stereo. I have been having issues with the volume control not working so was looking into upgrading it to a a jbl with nav since I can get a good deal on the stereo and nav antenna. My question is will the existing wire harness support this and will a unit from a 2012-2013 fit a 2010?

2004 GX 470 Mark Levinson with Nav.
Wife said she heard a 'pop' on the way home from work last night and thought she blew a tire or ran over something. Nothing in the road and tires fine so she continues home. Temperatures were near zero last night.
Upon start up today, the speakers were at full volume roar with the audio off.
Turning the audio on, only changed the pitch, not the level.
I tried cycle the audio on / off but no change. Restarted car, same thing.
Let the car sit a while and restarted it to check the system codes. Same noise for a few seconds, then a sort of 'pop' and the noise stops. Radio/ CD work fine now.
I checked the system and all shows OK. It is not drivable with the roar (if it comes back).

It's a weird issue. Randomly the radio's volume can not be raised or lowered. Usually this is at first time you start the truck no matter cold or hot. When this happened last time i clicked on the button that says sound. It brings you to the screen to change fade and balance and it was all darked out that you couldn't tap on it. After two minutes or even less it started to work. I'm thinking the original amp is the issue but others tell me its the radio.

When I started the gx up today I couldn't get the volume to go up or down, not on the steering wheel. I turned the stereo off and on several times throughout my ride to work but it didn't change. Then when I got to work, turned off the vehicle and turned it back on, it worked. It's like it got glitchy and needed to be reset.

I noticed since day one that my 2014 PiP radio is more static than my 2006 Prius. I also noticed that when I started moving in ev only, the radio volume level would drop. Well, I never really thought about it why till I got LED headlights. Now, the static is worst due to RF interference from the LED. So, it looks like there were more interference due to the ev electrical system. With the LED headlight, it made it worst. I have put a choke on the leads of the headlight, but it does nothing.

An intermittent problem has showed up over the last few weeks that is quite distressing when it occurs.
When starting the car, the radio comes on a full volume. Turning volume control knob does not work, but only turning off the radio or turning off the car. [This only occurs if the radio was left on when the car was shut off previously.]
Also, the problem is noticeable if the radio is off and the buttons on the navigation system are pushed resulting in a high-pitched "beep." Then I turn the car off, then on again, and everything is back to normal.
This happens about once or twice every couple of weeks.

I get frustrated when I start my car and the radio volume is really loud from my previous driving experience. When I shutdown my 2012 prius 3 with the radio volume turned up loud it seems to remember the volume level. I do not have volume control until 4 seconds after I start it.

Just purchased a Prius III a week ago, like it so far. But one thing I have not figured out is how to adjust the rear speakers volume. My Prius has a JBL system, the two front speaks are quite strong, but the rear ones are not. On my other car, Camry, the volume can be easily adjusted to make either the front or rear speakers loud / light / balanced. How to do this in Prius? I believe it must be capable of doing such a basic thing, right?

When I have the navigation routing somewhere, I can't figure out how to adjust the volume of the voice. How can I do this?

Even though I have my 2013 Prius for 2 months, I just started trying the voice command system. I find that the volume of the voice prompts are very very low, and can't figure out how to raise that volume. The volume controls on the steering wheel have no effect, the radio volume control knob doesn't do anything, and there's no icon on the audio/navigator screen to make the voice prompts any louder (that I can see or find). It's probably something real easy and I'm just missing it, right?

I was busy playing with my license plate lights over the weekend and came across how to reduce the beep volume when opening the rear hatch when using the remote or indash power door button. I'm not sure if this has been discovered before but thought I would post in case no one knows about it.
I have done this mod on my car and I haven't had any adverse effects and everything works perfectlyfine (no new lights, errors or anything else). It doesn't get rid of the noise, but it does reduce it down to the same volume as when you unlock/lock your car. Open your rear power door
Carefully pry away the bottom section of the interior panel of the rear door (this will be the side furthest away from the rear window glass). The trim is held in place by plastic clips that will pop out. A gentle but firm tug will remove the first one and the rest will just follow as you work your way around.
Once this is open look on the end side of the door. You will notice a black box with one end being rounded. There will be a plug that fits into this. Remove the plug and stow away. I stowed mine back behind the part of the loom it extends from to keep it out the way
Put the trim back and enjoy that annoying beep now being a lot quieter. The rest of the beep is at the front of the car and looks to hide somewhere underneath the shroud of the wiper blades where the front struts sit. It looks to be from the same area as the speaker for the alarm, so probably won't be able to completely kill the noise.

My daughter has inherited a 2002 Gen I Prius, and is complaining about the stereo. Says the speakers sound distorted and rattle when she turns up the volume.
The car is hundreds of miles from me, so I don't know if it's bad speakers, poor speakers, bad amp, underpowered amp, or just general malaise from age.
Options for upgrading or replacing the stereo system?
As I recall, the stereo may not be as integrated as on the later generations, but it sure isn't easily replaceable with a 3rd-party unit.

I recently purchased a 2013 prius two. My building's parking garage is very long (full city block) and narrow, and I have to back out of it each time I leave. While I understand the benefits of the beeping, it is SO LOUD! Is there any way to lower the volume? I know I can take it to the dealer to get it switched to one beep, but all I really want to do is make it quieter, not go away. Alternatively, where the speaker the sound comes out of is? Maybe I can muffle it with tape or something.
