My '04 Prius is currently at 134k miles and I've noticed for a while that the front suspension feels and sounds "loose" over small bumps and imperfections on the road.
I also just started noticing some squeaking noise coming from the axle/hub when I first drive off in the morning.
I first thought the loose feeling could be worn out shocks, but I'm starting to worry that it would be something else.
Just hit 225k with my 2004 Prius about a week ago. I passed inspection without replacing the (slightly) cracked rubber bushings for now, but what worries me is the cracks and a slight hole (it has not rusted completely through). Pictures attached. Should I do anything about this, and if so what?
Also, I've noticed that when I let go of the brake pedal, especially after a medium to the hard stop, I hear a squeaking... what's the cause for that? I know the front rotors have a bit of rust on the edges, but not sure if that's the cause... it seems to come from the back.
Other than that, the only other noise I've noticed is a slight clacking/tapping when the A/C is on, usually in hotter weather. The only thing I needed to pass inspection was to replace the muffler after a year and 1/2 ago, the last non-OEM part they put in at another shop was junk and rusted through pretty badly leaving a hole that was leaking. Ended up getting it replaced at the dealer with the OEM part this time...
Just picked up a 2005 Prius a few months back with 60k miles on it. It had an open recall related to the steering column so I took it to the local dealer for inspection. Well, they found it has a front axle seal leak and had a couple questions for the forum related to that.
1) It has not dripped a single drop of fluid in the time I have had it, so where would I look under the car to see the leak?
2) Anything else I should have them replace while they are repairing this issue?
I have a 2 month old 2013 Prius v, recently I’m hearing a squeaking sound, a sort of rusty door hinge sound when staring the my Prius v every morning (or after parking it for around 7-8 hours or so) coming from the rear axle or wheels. What causes it or what I can do about it? I have brought it to my dealer but it seems they don’t have any clue on what is happening (or they just don’t want to do the warranty on it).
View 4 RepliesI hear a jingle metallic noise from my front right rim when I hit small fast bumps, but not big smooth bumps. I took off the wheel and was able to pull the disc outward. The caliper held the other end, but area opposite was able to move. I checked the left front side of car and it wouldn't move at all. From what I've read the disc seems to slide off the front axle hub so maybe that is normal. Not sure why left won't move but right easily slides out. If I took off caliper it would come right off. It should be tight enough when the wheel is mounted I assume.

View 1 RepliesI have an 02 Jetta the the left CV Axle came loose from the tranny/axle flange. I checked the Bentley and it shows that a bolt holds the flange on, I guess a spline. My question when taking one off, is there anything inside that will drop/pop off when I pull it? The reason I need to take it off is that some of the bolts actually broke off, while others screwed their way out. Not sure why they came out or what made the others break but they did. It would be so much easier to get the broken bolts out with the flange out.

I had a funny road feel so I put it up and found the front right to be loose.... surprised and bewildered I pulled the cotter pin and retorqued the axle nut... Tightened right up. no more loose. Now a month later I get the same road wander and sure enough it is loose again.... I have already replaced the bearing about 15000 ago and there is no noise from the bearing. The assembly design pretty much locks the hub to the axle with no play in it at all.... Is it possible that I am pulling the axle apart through the outer knuckle?

The boot on mine is ripped and spraying grease so I figure I should just replace the whole axle while I'm in there. In a previous post, I also found out that replacing the CV axle (joint?) is easier than replacing just the boot.
View 1 RepliesSo I was driving yesterday and I hear a grinding noise near the front axle. I pull over and a plastic panel is hanging off near the front of the car. I go to the family mechanic to have him put it back on, and since one of the clips are missing, he tells me to go to the dealer to get a clip and have them fasten the panel.
This morning I go to the dealership. The service advisor gets me right on a lift and comes back about 20 minutes later with a slip of paper. He tells me that the piece is the door from the under body plastic protection that protects the oil reservoir. There are no sides of it that seem to have been ripped off a larger piece, just holes to be screwed in. He tells me the whole entire piece needs to be replaced, end of story. He did not offer warranty coverage (I have 20K on the car) and was not interested in speaking to me further on the topic. The parts desk pulled up a diagram of the car and showed me the panel as part of one big piece underneath that needs to be replaced.
I am going to seek out another dealership on this, but I wanted to pose this to you all as well. First, do I even need to replace this small piece of thin plastic? Second, if I do, can I buy just this small piece and not the entire under body panel. I noticed some threads about the poor design of the oil door, and perhaps this is what this is? I do not have access to a floor jack or garage, so all of my service (free toyota care) has been done at this specific dealership. Here is a pic of the piece.
I have an 04 Limited, 6.0 PSD, 4x4 which I need to replace the front inner axle seals, the right side is leaking out the shaft. I have watched a couple of YouTube videos on how it is done but would like to get some first hand knowledge and recommendations.
First, how important is it to check the backlash before beginning the removal of the gear assembly? Do I need to remove the pinion gear as well or just the gear assembly?
How difficult is it to get everything back on place once the seals are replaced? I have not done this type of repair before and am concerned I might miss something.
I am planning to replace all the ball joints at this time also, this was the primary reason for this maintenance in the first place.
So I just had my transmission replaced because my cv axle popped loose and tore a hole right into my old one spilling all the tranny oil all over the road. I was able to find another used one and then bolt it up and now I have a small issue. Its been leaking a little bit of tranny oil through the one piece on the bottom that has two bolts on it and a VW logo on it.

View 2 RepliesLooking to change out my front differential cover tomorrow, cover is pitted, rusted, corroded, and leaking at the seals. While under there I want to inspect the vent for the axle and differential (and replace if it's clogged - which I believe is leading to the seal leaking). Looking for info about the vent tube location on the front axle? Thought I read somewhere it was on the cover itself, turns out that's a negative.

View 11 RepliesI have the TyrolSport Brake Caliper stiffening kit on my R. My brakes were squeaking and I had not greased the pins in a bit so I thought that might be the issue. When I went to grease them, I notice one pin was completely loose. It was my driver front lower. I greased it and tightened it back up. That was maybe 2 -3 week ago. I checked again on Friday before my track day on Saturday and the same pin was lose. Not all the way like last time, but not locked tight. This one pin is the only one that seems to have issues. The other three are rock solid.
View 6 RepliesI have a 2004 F150, 5.4L V8. A few years back I was in an accident when someone slammed into the front of my truck. The right front wheel & tire took the brunt of the accident. I thought the repair shop had everything back to normal until recently I occasionally have a grinding sound coming from the right front side, seems to be related to the axle. It doesn't do it all the time just at random while I'm driving. The only solution I can find is to pull over or slow my speed to a crawl. Once I slow down enough or turn my wheel one way or the other its like something SLAMS back into place. I had it looked at by a local mechanic and they couldn't find anything wrong. Could it be something in my right front axle?

View 14 Replies2001 Explorer sport trac. I had a shop install new front pads because I couldn't brake the caliper bolts loose. I noticed they didn't use any grease on the pads from what I can see, and there has been a quiet rubbing/squeaking sound coming from the wheels (mainly when pressing the brakes). I assume it's the brake pads/caliper parts that still need to be greased. I have the right kind of grease and I'm about to do it, but what parts of the pads/caliper assembly need to be greased?
View 11 RepliesThis bad squeaking, loose rattling and (sometimes) banging noise from the left rear started happening about a couple weeks ago. I've removed all interior panels, even the exterior bumper thinking there was something loose and nothing. I suspect as a last resort it has to be the suspension despite the car having only 17k km.
What is strange is the rattle increases in sound volume and occurs more often the longer you drive and also if temperatures get colder.
In other words, if I have the car parked in my garage overnight (slightly above 0 C) and immediately drive next morning into sub-freezing temps and on bumpy roads, you don't hear it. But after 5-10 minutes of driving, you start to hear it and gets louder and more frequent.
Searched other threads and some have reported the shock as the problem for 2010/2011 models, but none had any sound or video to compare.
