So 2 weeks ago I moved to hamilton county in tn and it turns out that they smog check vehicles which I have never had to do. I was wondering how often does the gen 2 prius fail smog checks. My car has 120k and no dtc's stored .
View 2 RepliesMy wife and I recently bought a 2003 Pontiac Vibe, a Toyota Matrix with slightly different skin, and shortly after we got a check engine light. When I inspected the car before purchase I noticed that there was black soot in the exhaust pipe. The owner told me that he'd put a cat back exhaust but I suspected I'd probably be replacing the O2 sensors soon and we negotiated the price accordingly. So now it's a month later and I bought an OBD II checker. I followed the instructions and after the checker and the cars ECU linked it showed no stored codes. I turned off the CEL and we went shopping. Mid way on the drive home, we live out in the country, the CEL came on again. Went through the procedure again, still no codes stored. I've read the instruction manual twice and I don't think I'm doing anything wrong. Is it possible to have a check engine light on and there to be no codes stored for the OBD tester to find? I could have bought many rolls of black tape for what the tester cost and I kept the receipt just in case.

Recently went in to get my smog checked and failed two of the three tests: the functional and emissions. I've attached the VIR.
Mechanic said there might be a leak, so a buddy of mine checked the engine for a vacuum leak but couldn’t find anything.
What are the common sources for a failed smog check? I plan on getting a diagnostic later in the week/

Mercedes 1997 e420, and has fixed up the minor problems. It runs good, but to sell it he needs to take it to the Smog check. How long it'll take to reset the computer for it?

View 10 RepliesMy V5 is approaching 3 months old..and I love it. But, today, I was surprised to find all of my stored favorites in the nav system gone! Even "Home"..was wiped out! I have the standard nav system (no ATP). No buttons were pushed to clear the system but, the car did sit unused for 6 days, though that shouldn't wipe out the memory, I don't think. It's difficult to have to reload everything I had stored, especially if this becomes a regular occurrence.

View 7 RepliesSo my daughter's 2000 Golf Mk4 with 160,000 miles on it was running rough and had 3 codes stored - cylinders 2 & 3 misfire and a 411 secondary air injection problem.
Having had the misfire code before I swapped injectors around and the error code moved cylinders with the injectors so I attempted cleaning them and also cleaned the throttle body and intake manifold. At this point car still running rough but also started smoking badly.
Replaced the following items:
- Spark plugs
- Spark plug wires
- PCV valve
- PCV hose
- Fuel injectors w/ remanufactured
Hose reconnected between secondary air injection pump and air intake - previous owner had duct-taped it in when he couldn't get it to seal I guess. I've never heard it run.
Car running better, idles more smoothly, doesn't stumble or stall like it did before, no error codes coming up BUT car smokes a lot and the fumes make me feel sick just driving it a mile.
The car had never smoked like this before, hasn't had a whole lot of love the last year or two but no real problems either so why the sudden smoke?
At first I assumed it was cleaner being burned off but that should have been gone in under a minute and this is on-going. It's bad enough to not only be embarrassing but apparently dangerous as the fumes are bad.
I haven't used my gn ball for probably 3 years went to pull it out and flip it over to use it and it is stuck solid. Tried pb blaster trans fluid hammering on it jacking the truck up by it heating it and no go. How to get it out.

I know its only supposed to run the first minute. took pump apart. impeller spun freely. connected to battery using jumpers. pump ran fine. changed relay that's located next to the 2 fuses next to the battery. the 30 amp fuse and the 10 amp fuse are good. there is no power getting to the pump. also have confirmed good ground. where do I look now ?
View 1 RepliesMy truck is a 91 sierra 2500 over 8600 gvw (8 lug) 5.7 4l80E. After my truck failed a Calif smog test I set about testing the different sensors that are attributed to the reason it failed (a few points high on HC's). All the smog equipment and sensors tested ok except for the 02.
I tested the one in the truck when it failed smog, it came out at 400 millivolts key on engine off as my Haynes manual and the Autozone website said it should, after running the truck for 10 minutes and running it at around 1200 RPM's for 2 min to get the O2 cycling it doesn't, best I have gotten was a slow rise of about 0.01 millivolt rise per second to about 0.590 MV where it seemed to level off, the problem is 2 seperate new sensors do the exact same thing, none cycle rapidly between 100-900 MV as the Haynes manual and the Autozone website say they should.
The 02 is pre-cat stock location, no changes to the exhaust since my last smog check. I don't even know if this is the reason I failed smog, it's just the only thing that didn't pass my testing. the truck does seem to be running a bit rich (per my ultra sensitive tailpipe sniff test).
I did do all the normal repairs after I failed the smog test, tune up, air filter, clean the TB run a can of cleaner through the gas tank, ETC, then I failed the re-test by 3 points worse. The truck does not run bad or blow a bunch of smoke, the truck is not throwing any codes.
Baffled that my well-maintained 05 Corolla couldn't smog today. Smog checker said rpms were too high and it got kicked off the machine six times; said he had replaced his cable today. Manual transmission, 96,000 miles and had oil change last week; 93,000 major service included flush of something.

My idle is at around 1200. It should be 750. If I take off the flame trap the idle drops. The flame trap is not clogged and there is good vacuum pressure on the small hose. After replacing my cat the numbers went way down on the tail pipe emissions.
So my flame trap appears functional and not clogged but it causes high idle.
My 95 Nissan Maxima just failed smog because the MIL light would not come on Everything else passed. The light was working. I last noticed about 2 weeks ago after I had the car washed. I'm reading it can be a bulb or the computer? What can I expect in repair costs?

I have smogged it 3 times by clearing the codes then getting it smog immediately after and have not had a problem for some reason when I tried it this year efter clearing the codes the sensors havn't reset, why its not working and what can be done to fix it....
View 7 RepliesI have a 96 F250 w/a 351w, I can hear a buffering or low whizzing sound coming from the smog pump...(I know its from the pump cuz I took the hose off and could really hear it). In addition, I notice that even after the truck is warmed up I push in the clutch and the rpm's will stay at about 1100-1200 then slowly go back down to 900ish. But if I just let start it and it runs it will sit around 900 even after I rev it up.....? I am wondering, A. is the smog pump supposed to make that sound, ( I can hear it in the cab when driving and initially thought is was a small exhaust leak), and B. could there be any relation between the smog pump and the odd idle?

View 2 RepliesWhat is the procedure to check the codes when the check engine light illuminates. I am looking for the exact procedure. For example in my other cars, you connect the scanner to the OBD2 connector, then you turn the key to ON without starting the car.
View 1 RepliesThis Prius is an '04 with 156k and it will only start with a jump box. I went into the display and found the 12 volt battery reading 12.2 volts after sitting for 4 hours. When driving stop and go around town I will get the red triangle of death and vsc lights but NO check engine light comes on. Using a Scangauge it shows no codes, system ready. I look into pending codes and there is nothing. However when I force clear pending codes the triangle goes away.
It's strange there are no codes associated with this fault. I'm thinking to drive it and not force clear the pending codes and maybe a code will show up eventually but I'm not sure.
Last year my check engine light came on a couple of times at the end of the summer but it went away and I can't remember how. Today was the warmest day of the year so far for us and my check engine light came on again. It seems to happens when it's warm, I'm accelerating and I think the A/C is on but I can't be 100% sure about that.
