Prius (2004-09) :: Noise In Engine While Accelerating
Oct 6, 2014
So after doing some troubleshooting and researching in trying to find out on my 87K 2008 Prius Std "Noise in the engine while accelerating", "Approximately 10% reduction in fuel efficiency, due to lack of power from engine" & "Glide seems to be degrading over time", here is what I have observed.
1) When I push the gas when the car is parked the engine does not seem to rev in a stream, it goes up for about 3 seconds then goes down for 1 second, then again goes up and then down and this keeps happening until the gas pedal is kept press. In conventional cars the rev should be streaming continuously and proportionately to the pressure applied on gas pedal. This almost seems like a misfire, but from the drivers seat I do not hear any blasts, I have never tried this before so I don't know if Prius's are suppose to be like this. Also no Alarms on the MFD.
2) After using the 5.25 oz fuel injector cleaner in back to back half tanks I saw the engine regaining power and hence bettering the fuel efficiency. Does that mean I should get a Fuel Injector cleaning done by Toyota?

I have a 2008 Prius and recently hit the 85K mark. A couple of weeks ago, about a week after my most recent oil change, I started noticing a noise when I accelerate. It's kind of a wah-wah-wah-wah or wuh-wuh-wuh-wuh noise that gets faster the faster I'm going. It's not terribly loud - I can't hear it if the windows are open or if the volume on my radio is cranked up.
It disappears when I stop accelerating or sharply reduce my acceleration. At about 40-50 mph, the noise goes away. I'm not sure if this is because road noise blocks it out, or it's so fast-paced that it just becomes one constant noise.
Today for the first time since this all started, I also noticed that unless I'm not accelerating at all, I have poor gas mileage (like under 25 mpg). This happened once before and went away the next day so it might be unrelated.
Can I wait until my 90K service to have this checked out? Should I visit my mechanic now? Do you think this is a timing chain issue? What am I looking at?

I have a 2004 Phaeton V8 whose engine makes a noise which just shouldn't be there. I occurs if you accelerate the engine (also when the car is not moving) at about 1500 rpm. VW dealer says its okay.

I bought a used Certified Prius with 49k miles on it. I noticed when accelerating (and the display shows that I am using the ICE but not so much that it shoots up into the "Power" portion on the far right) that the there is a clicking noise coming from the front passenger side of the car.
It sounds very much like this:
I don't hear it when only the electric motor is running, and I don't hear it when I really punch it and the power meter is completely filled up. Its more when the power meter is in the middle of the display and the ICE kicks in and I am slowly accelerating.

My 2010 Prius has been making an odd noise intermittently while accelerating. I haven't been able to reproduce it for the mechanics (of course). The best description I have for the noise is this. It sounds like the click/rattle sound a car makes when it is stalling. Just sped up. This can happen at any time I accelerate (even at highway speeds) but it usually happens just after I start moving from a stop. When it occurs it feels like there is a drop in engine power and I either have to take my foot off the accelerator, or push down harder and power through.

I recently bought a 2006 prius used with 100,000 miles and have been hearing a very disconcerning sound coming from underneath the car. It is a screechy noise that is always there, but especially when i accelerate or break going up a hill. I have had it checked out by both a dealership and an independent mechanic neither party has info what it could be, even after hours of troubleshooting, as well as showing then a video in which you can hear this awful sound.

I own a 2004 Hyundai Sonata (2004 Base model L4 - 2.4L 2351cc - MFI GAS DOHC) which is a 4 cylinder and has about 113000 miles. Anyways, about a month ago we had one of our coldest days of the year. I drove the car to work and everything was fine. Then when I left work (it was freezing cold) I went to start the car and it sounded like I started a race car. It was so loud that I thought the car was going to blow up (no check engine light came on). I changed the oil and that didn't work and so I figured it was something with the exhaust.
Then I took it to my mechanic (applause). He said that he was stumped, the car was noisy but he didn't think it was a problem but he said he would try to figure it out. He ended up taking off the timing belt and said that was fine, he said the water pump was good as well. He had a service tech look at it with him and they thought the issue might be the "vibration dampener" or "damper" So they replaced that but it didn't work. He said it could possibly be the motor mounts but he said when he looked at them they looked okay?
I drove it off his lot yesterday and it is quiet when I idle but I can see the steering wheel shaking significantly. Then when I hit the gas it is still obnoxiously loud and with heavy vibration! But when going down a hill and letting off the gas there is a brief respite of silence (still vibration). It is especially louder in lower rpms and sometimes I think I can hear a metallic clanking/scraping noise when I have the times of "silence" but it is very faint.

I recently changed my oil, transmission fluid, and both coolant systems. I have a 2008 Prius, and I can hear this noise coming from the engine when I accelerate between 50-70 MPH or have the cruise control on.
I had low coolant in the ICE system earlier (didn't know there were two separate systems) and I had the red triangle light up for a moment and "Problem" appear on the LCD screen followed by an orange thermometer. I pulled over and let it cool down, and babied it home and added coolant.

I had whining from the engine compartment when I am coasting and accelerating, much noiser than in the past. I had been getting a C1310 code along with C1253 , C1241 and C1300, but I changed out the Anti Skid ECU and these went away. However I still get the red triangle of death VSC and ABS lights on after driving on the highway for about 10 minutes at speeds over 65. So I then got P0A2B 250 codes, Drive motor A temperature sensor. After it rested a while and I restarted the car, all but the red triangle would go out. After two more starts the Red triangle went away too. This happened for a few weeks, until one day after a trip, the car just stopped. Would not start at all, no ready light went on. Testing gave me a P0AA6 526 code, Hybrid Battery Voltage System Isolation Fault. Now I know the 526 could be multiple faults but with the whining and the P0A2B, I am thinking the transaxle is the smoking gun.

I took my car to the car wash and they seemed to take longer to vacuum/wash it and while driving it away, I noticed something was off. It seems like the engine is louder than normal. Before when starting the car, it would take 30 seconds to a minute before the battery/engine would come on. Then while accelerating to about 25-35 mph, then the engine would come into gear. When going on the freeway, if accelerating at a quick speed it would sound really loud. Now, it seems like instead of silent, quiet, a little louder, louder and loudest - it's moved to the next level. When starting the car, the engine starts right away and when driving away (at less than 25 mph), the engine sound like I am on the freeway and when I'm on the freeway it sound like I'm trying to gun the engine. I don't know what it could be.

Dealership says engine knocking means I need a new engine. I have put 3000 miles since last dealership visit. No change in engine. Could this be a catalytic converter or other problem? Do not hear the noise at 70 mph only at 0-40 mph.

I have read up quite a bit on this whistle that the 4.0 liter SOHC engine makes while accelerating. Sounds like something in the TB or intake to me. There are no definitive answers to the whistle that I could find. Need to resolve this whistling noise? It's a very high pitched whistle only while accelerating at about 1/3 throttle.

I bought a 2007 Prius with 198,000 miles on it. Since then I've got it up to 200,000 ish. The previous owners took very good care of it, and did not encountered any severe issues.
I recently took it in to a toyota dealership for the free inspection, and they said it was in remarkably good shape. I asked about the engine noise, and they took it for a drive and said everything sounded pretty normal, at least compared to the prius with 130,000 miles on it that they had apparently just serviced before me. I went ahead and lifted up the hood, set my phone recording at the front of the car, and started it. I let it run for a few seconds, then shut it off.

My good ole trusty Prius is still running good, change the oil every month (3000-5000 miles) and still drinks oil and a little over half a quart every 1000 miles.. No big deal. Well over the last 20,000 miles I started to notice this off rattle, noise when accelerating mid throttle mostly when up hill. I thought it may have been the timing chain after changing the water pump, spark plugs and using all sorts of fuel additives, but no change.
After time it's only gotten worse, my works buys my fuel (regular 87) but one day I bought my self a tank of super premium, and hey!!! It sounded great, quiet, powerful.
My question is.. Is this because of a worn timing chain making the knock sensor do this, is this because of carbon in the engine? What should I know? I really need to fix this.

I have an 04 celica gt with around 168 k miles on it. Recently I have noticed a distinct metal on metal rattling noise whenever I accelerate at low speeds. It seems to be my exhaust as when I rev it up in park it makes the noise. But it doesn't ever make the noise when I'm on the expressway or cruising at back roads speeds. When I got under and looked at my exhaust everything looked normal?

I've been noticed that the car has a loud clicking noise when I accelerate, and it is more noticeable at lower speeds due to less wind noise.

This odd noise just started today. Whenever i accelerate at any rate, an odd "buzzing" sound occurs. It almost sounds like a diesel... Boost is not holding as it should, and I get exhaust backfires in first, second, and third gear. Makes no noise when i lay off the throttle, only when i touch the gas... I don't have a VAG-com, I'm thinking a exhaust leak or boost leak.

On my 2004 VW (V8) Touareg (55k miles) I'm starting to hear a ticking or flicking (like with playing cards) noise from somewhere outside the cabin when I put the hammer down. For example, if I'm at a dead stop and kinda hit the gas (for a good throttle response) my wife and I both hear a ticking noise that is making me wonder if something is wrong or heading that way....

I have a 2004 Ford Escape Limited. There is a squealing noise when I accelerate from a complete stop. It's not there constantly, and seems to have started when I started using the AC. When I had my oil changed tonight at a Tires Plus, I asked them to listen, and the mechanic thought it was a valve related issue since it's not a constant noise. He only got it to squeal by hitting the gas really hard. He said to take it to a dealer...which is super expensive!

2006 Prius ...
Symptoms: The shudder feels like going over a "washboard" dirt road. It mimics the normal "cough / hesitation" that occasionally happens when the MG2 switches to the ICE while accelerating, or vice versa at a stop light. However, unlike the normal switching, this is continuous. It ONLY happens when accelerating; as soon as I lift my foot from the gas, the shudder quits. Although it is worse in stop-and-go, it is also noticeable on a clear freeway. It is worse with a cold engine, but continues from speeds of 10 mph all the way up to 80 mph (and probably higher.) The shudder is slower at lower speeds, and faster at higher speeds. It is most dramatic when making a left turn from a dead stop - the whole vehicle shakes. Weather conditions vary, but usually it happens on dry, paved roads, anywhere from 30-degrees to 75-degrees (F).
Frequency: first noticed a few months ago, gradually becoming more frequent. Now, it is almost every time the car is started. (Sometimes it accelerates without any problem at all.)
Diagnostics: The "Check Engine" light has been on for about 5 years (dealerships couldn't find anything wrong and it turned out to be the MG1 battery.) But when this new shuddering happens, the "Check Engine" light blinks continuously until the shuddering quits (i.e. let off the gas or brake.) There are no other indicator lights on (no triangle of death). And the diagnostics mode tells me nothing.
Other Info: The MG2 battery has not been replaced in the entire life of the vehicle. The MG1 battery was replaced, however, about 2 years ago. Regular oil changes have been kept up, along with air filter replacements, brake pad replacements, tire rotations, and all the other standard maintenance. It has had one owner, and is at 255,000 miles. MPG is currently at about 44.4 and has not changed since this problem started.
