Prius (2004-09) :: Metallic Noise At The Top Of Engine When It Is Engaged

Sep 23, 2012

Our 04 Prius makes a really scary metallic noise at the top of the engine when it is engaged. All maintenance has been performed within 100 miles of the warning light. We are the original owners and the car has 160k miles. No pulleys are touching their surroundings. Make no mistake, this a LOUD noise that has been growing with time. No warning lights,,,oil level is fine,,,and no metal visible on the dipstick. Sound is originating at the top of the engine and is not a "knock". It is more of a metal on metal type of noise.

Prius (2004-09) :: 2006 - Rattling Noise When Combustion Engine Is Engaged

My '06 Prius just started making this noise. the check engine light is NOT on. I haven't really heard this noise before in my recollection. I just got an oil change 3 days ago and when I got the oil change there was no indication from the dealership that there were any issues. The engine only makes this noise when the combustion engine is engaged. I can't see any wobbling on the belt drives or and loose parts in the engine. The spin appears to be coming from the engine block or around the pullys for the belt. My first thought is that it could be dirty gas because I first heard this sound after filling up. I am 300 miles from home and have to drive home today.

Prius (2004-09) :: Metallic Rattling Noise On Acceleration

While driving through a tunnel today I noticed a metallic rattling noise upon acceleration. It goes away immediately when I let me foot off the gas and when I park the car and rev the engine the sound does not occur.

A few days ago, I had to rapidly accelerate and it felt as though I lost power for a split second. I am not sure if these are related, but I am hoping its not some sort of transmission issue (unless that is covered under the hybrid warranty. What was the diagnosis?

Prius (2004-09) :: Metallic Rubbing Noise In Left Rear

First the specs: 2008 w/38K, not sure which package but nothing fancy. This morning got in the car and started off and hear a metallic rubbing noise coming from the left rear of the car. Sounded like it came from around the wheel area. Temp was coolish around 36 degrees. The noise only happened for the first few minutes and only when going real slow, like 5 or 10 mph, and only when I was turning right.

Sound was like the the sound you get when a brake pad is worn way down and scrubbing on a rotor or drum. Also, the sound would speed up as I sped up until a certain speed then would go away. I actually stopped and restarted to be sure I could make it happen again. Once the car warmed up I couldn't reproduce the noise. Drove the car later in the afternoon with temps in the high 40s and no noise. Also, I never use the E brake so can't imagine that would have any impact

Sonata NF (2006-10) :: Metallic Knocking Engine Noise

I have a 2006 Sonata GL, 2.4L, manual transmission, with about 130K miles. It has recently developed a knocking noise. The noise sounds metallic.

Some data: timing chain, guides, tensioner are all new, the noise is not coming from there.

Compression tests on the 4 cylinders came back with 200, 200, 180, and 200 psi readings. Tests were performed 3 different times, same gauge, all numbers came back the same.

The noise comes on only under acceleration (gas is supplied), and even then it's not consistent. For example, accelerating at 2500 rpm will make the noise, but the noise will go away at, say, 3000 rpm, while accelerating. Then again, the same thing can happen at 3200 rpm: accelerating will cause the noise, but up to a point, beyond which the noise goes away. The noise is not present at idle. I can always make the noise heard, just not consistently at the same rpm range.

I ran the engine with one spark plug disconnected at a time: the noise goes away when the #3 cylinder spark is disconnected.

Opinions vary: wrist pin, piston slap, rod bearing, etc.

Any tests I could run to narrow the problem? It has been difficult to pinpoint where the noise is coming from with a stethoscope...

Oil changes have been very regular (3.5K), using Mobil 1. Nevertheless, it has been burning oil.

Prius (Gen 2) :: Metallic Clunk - Noise In The Front End

Over the last few months I've noticed a clunking/rattling in the front end somewhere -- probably started at around 60,000 miles. I've considered T-SB-0300-08, but it can range from a clunk-noise to a metallic clunk-noise, and is often felt on smallish bumps. Sometimes I can feel a knock in the steering wheel, especially at very low speeds. I get the distinct feeling that the front wheels might be wobbling a bit as things clunk going over small bumps. Predominantly a left-side thing, but not exclusively.

Prius (Gen 1) :: 2002 - Intermittent Leaking / Hissing When Engine Is Engaged

My recently acquire 2002 has intermittent leaking/hissing periods when the engine is engaged. I have the sound of air leaking or being moved. I hear the individual stokes of the engine, I don't feel any missing in power, No light comes on. After around 60 to 90 seconds of driving, quicker if I press the accelerator the sound has gone away. I wonder what I can do to check this out, I have not been able to pinpoint the area it comes from other than the engine area.

Prius C :: Clicking Metallic Noise Up To 1 Second After Releasing The Brake

I should probably arm myself with a sound clip, you can hear it with radio off windows up, but more prevalent outside or windows down. whenever I stop and release the brake, there is a metallic clank noise that is heard outside the car. now I didn't want to bring it up to the dealer, but at my last service interval, I test drove a brand new Prius C and I could not duplicate it. So I don't know if its something that developed after it brakes in and is normal.. The prius C I test drove was utterly quite going from brake to gas until the point the whirling sound starts. mine has a metallic clank and it usually is not immediately as I release but within a second, and I thought maybe it was a change in the regen system, but now I am more curious as a brand new one did not make that sound.

Prius C :: Metallic Noise When Hit The Brakes Medium Hard

This morning, I hit the brakes medium hard and got a short metal-on-metal 'scrape' noise from the rear end. It sounded like a brake shoe to me. Later my wife was out shopping and did a 'regular' stop and got the same noise.

The car isn't driven a lot. It's just under 1.5 years old and has 5,400 miles on it. So, I'm pretty sure there isn't a lot of brake wear. Maybe a little above average from mostly city driving. I assume the rear brakes are self-adjusting. Do they make noise when they are adjusting?

Jeep - Wrangler :: 2004 - Metallic Tapping Or Ratcheting Noise

I've got a 2004 Jeep Wrangler SE 5-speed with 83,000 miles on the 2.4l PowerTech engine in it, and it's making a very strange noise that I can't pinpoint.

So first, the noise itself. It sounds like a metallic tapping or ratcheting, like the sound of raising of a large chain hoist. Fairly high-pitched, audible inside and out. Not incredibly loud (I have to point it out to passengers) but loud enough to bother the hell out of me. The closest I can come with location is "somewhere under the hood."

However, the noise is only present under certain conditions:1. The transmission must be in gear. Forward or reverse doesn't matter. Revving engine at idle does not produce the noise.2. The transmission must be under load, i.e. when accelerating or releasing the clutch in 1st to begin driving. Letting off the gas stops the noise.3. The noise only exists somewhere between 1k and 2.5k rpms. Application of throttle at any road speed in any gear with the engine in that RPM range produces the noise. 4. The frequency of the tapping increases with engine speed. 5. Ambient temperature appears to have no effect, but as engine temperature increases the noise tends to disappear. Not always, though, as it shows up sometimes when the engine is completely up to operating temperature. 6. I don't notice any kind of performance issues related to the noise. Power's normal (for a 2.4l Chrysler 4-banger, that is) and gas mileage is within the EPA estimates.

Things I've investigated:1. I'm pretty sure it's not lifter noise. A bottle of Seafoam made it run better, but the noise persists. 2. I've checked the catalytic converter heat shield. It's on tight. I found the flange where the exhaust manifold meets the downpipe was a bit loose, but tightening it down didn't eliminate the noise. Getting underneath and shaking the hell out of every component of the exhaust system I can reach produces no results.3. Engine mounts show normal wear. Transmission mount appears fine. 4. No check engine light, and all gauges read normal. Hooked up a code reader for fun and it came back with nothing.

As the noise only shows up while driving, I can't just crawl under there and poke around. The best I can do while driving is feel for related vibration, which gives me nothing. Whatever causing it, it's not transferring up through the stick.

In the may-or-may-not-be-related category, I've got a bit of oil consumption and a clunky transmission, but according to the various Jeep forums I've found, those seem to be fairly normal.

We got some snow the other day, and as I cleared it off I allowed the car to warm up for about 20 minutes. When I got in and drove it, the noise was greatly reduced. Not gone, but barely perceptible.

I spent a couple hours on YouTube the other day, trying to compare my noise to videos of other Jeeps with drivetrain issues, and found nothing even close to similar. Whatever's making this noise, it's not common.

Prius (2004-09) :: Cruise Control Engaged And Car Accelerated When Brakes Applied

My 2005 Toyota Prius gave me confidence. Here's what happened:

I was driving on the Interstate with the cruise control set at 70 mph. Seeing traffic stopped ahead, I applied the brakes for a moment to slow, then released the brake to coast. Much to my surprise, the cruise control was still engaged and the car accelerated. I applied the brakes again, manually turned off the cruise control, then was able to coast. I drove for another half-hour without incident until the following afternoon when I drove again, experiencing a much more serious problem.

I had just turned left, and was straightening the wheels when I heard, and felt, a loud "snap" in the steering wheel, immediately upon which I knew the steering wheel was disconnected and I could no longer steer the car. Very, very fortunately, and only because I was already nearly stopped, I was able to stop the vehicle without incident.

However, I immediately recognized that, had this happened in almost any other scenario than being nearly parked, the outcome would have been markedly different. The steering wheel is completely loose, not controlling anything, and all the many steering wheel controls are equally disconnected, including the driver's air bag (SRS), something that I would have needed, but wouldn't have worked, had I crashed into oncoming traffic or an Interstate median.

Prius (2004-09) :: 2007 - Keep On Creeping Forward With Emergency Brake Engaged?

I bought a 2007 Prius 2 months ago and I noticed that when I stop at a stop light and engage the parking/emergency brake while keeping it in Drive gear the car creeps forward. I have more experience with manual cars where when you pull the emergency brake it locks the car and prevents it from rolling forward or back despite the car being still in gear, so I'm curious to know whether this is a normal thing with a Prius and pushing the P button in addition to the emergency brake at a stop light with a slight incline is necessary. I find that this two step process of disengaging the E break and putting the car back in Drive makes you slow to take off. But what I want to know if this normal with a Prius?

Prius (Gen 3) :: Metallic Rattle Noise Coming Under The Passenger Seat

Lately I've started having an intermittent metallic noise that has been bugging me. At first it occurred on long runs and sounded like it could have been the brakes or something similar. It is not too loud but is continuous, rather like gently rattling your set of keys.

It got steadily worse and I eventually tracked it down to the passenger seat. When I held the seat the metallic rattle stopped.

Prius (2004-09) :: Metallic Rattle Sound During Acceleration

I'm back with another question! My 2006 Prius now has 60,XXX miles and the other day while driving with the windows down, I was climbing a hill to my house and when the engine is at a certain RPM, there is a metallic sound that comes from under the car, but more in the front. You can't even hear it when the windows are up barley, but more when they are down, you can hear it, especially when you're beside a wall or guard rail and the sound can reverberate back.

Lexus GX 2004-09 :: Metallic Rattling Noise Going Over A Rapid Series Of Bumps

My truck is making a metal on metal rattling noise when going over undulations or the type of vibration when you drive over a rumble strip.

It seems to be coming from underneath the engine area, but not quite sure. The sound is like a kettle lid clanking on the actual kettle when the water's boiling if you can hear what I mean. No noise when just driving.

Prius (2004-09) :: RED Triangle With Exclamation Point On Dash - Transmission Not Properly Engaged

I've had this happen twice: Foot on Brake, press start, car powers up. RED Triangle with exclamation point on dash. Message on MFD screen says something like "Transmission not properly engaged, move vehicle to level area and press Park"

I can't move it anywhere because nothing but the electrical system works. I can't even turn it back off.

Toyota tells me have it towed. They send "their guy", who is also the area AAA guy. Tow truck driver says he can't tow it because it won't go into neutral. So he jumps it...car shuts off when power is pushed. Push power again. Car starts fine.

Drive to Toyota. They keep it all day, do all kinds of diagnostic tests, tell me there's nothing wrong. I ask if it's the battery, they say it tests fine, but they'll replace it if I want (of course they don't keep it in stock and have to order it).

The car did the same thing this morning, but I was able to turn it off & restart. (That makes it #3)

Prius (Gen 3) :: Metallic Flakes In Engine Oil After Wide Open Throttle

I've been using full synthetic 0W-20 oil since it was new(2010 Prius. It is an early build). Last time I had an oil change was about a year and a half ago, oil has 8,000 miles on it. I ran the car hard today at wide open throttle around town. Never driven this way for the past 68,000 miles/5 years. All fluid levels are normal. When I went to check the oil dipstick after running the car at WOT a few times, I noticed a few flakes on the dip stick. Nothing big, just a 1-2 flakes very small flakes every time I reinsert the dip stick. Flakes are about the size of a single dust particle. It's 86 degrees out, which supposedly 0W-20 should protect the engine.

Prius V :: Engine Ping (rattling Metallic Sound) Under Load

When accelerating up a steep grade the engine will ping (rattling metallic sound) when reaching a certain RPM, but stop pinging as I continue to push the accelerator down and increase the RPM. Should I be concerned? Could it be something else, loose exhaust heat shield or something? Or is this normal behavior for a gasoline engine? My old Honda Fit never had engine ping/knock that i can recall in its 200,000km of service running the same 87 octane gas.

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: 2004 F250 - Grinding Noise When Hubs Are Engaged

Okay this is what I got; I recently purchased high mileage 2004 F250 Super Duty short box super cab 5.4 liter. Came with manual 4x4 handle on the floor so no 4 wheel on the fly and this eliminates the vacuum for the auto hubs so this will not be part of the problem. When engaging the hubs and ONLY when engaged the driver side hub grinds. The 4 wheel drive works but it sounds like its ready to grind itself into oblivion. I did pull the hub and the grinding was gone, I happen to have a spare hub that is good and the grinding returned.

I have jacked it up and made sure I have no play in the wheel itself and the axle knuckle on the axle shaft. Some say remove the front drive shaft? Or turn the wheels all the way in one direction engage the hubs and check for binding? I will do this in the morning, but what does that confirm if it not the hub. Could it be the passenger side echoing across? On my 99 Super duty I kept hearing moaning coming from up front like the breaks were shot and if you stuck your head out the window it was the back echoing to make it sound like the front.

Prius (2010-12) :: Metallic Rattling Noise Coming From Transmission When Switched To N

Prius (2010-12) :: 2015 - Metallic Clank / Noise Occasionally On Random Bumps

So I noticed this when I had my windows down and the music off (or very low) for the past few weeks (at this point). About 3800 miles on the car, and maybe once or twice during a drive It is an occasional clank/ metallic noise that sounds like it is coming from either the left or right side depending on which tire hits the bump. But I can go over any number of bumps before and after with no noise at all, and it's not like I'm hearing it on just large bumps/ potholes. I've never heard it on any speed bumps.

I have a feeling it is when only one tire drops down a bit from a small bump, but that is only a feeling, and it's on small bumps. I tried looking up other threads on here for suspension noise, but mostly only finding things dating back to 2011 or so with brake caliper pins, possibly motor mount but nothing really recent.
