I just realized this leak under my 2007 Prius not too long ago. Attached is an image of the leak, and I circled where it is coming from. It is coming from the front of the car. Is this an issue?
View 7 RepliesSo we have an oil leak in our 2005. It is coming from the front of the engine on the passenger side. The oil was changed on May 15th. And it has only leaked since then. Any thoughts on what it may be? What part of the engine deals with oil in that part of the engine compartment? We will take it back to the place that last changed it and have them check it out as well.
View 2 RepliesJust picked up a 2005 Prius a few months back with 60k miles on it. It had an open recall related to the steering column so I took it to the local dealer for inspection. Well, they found it has a front axle seal leak and had a couple questions for the forum related to that.
1) It has not dripped a single drop of fluid in the time I have had it, so where would I look under the car to see the leak?
2) Anything else I should have them replace while they are repairing this issue?
2007 Prius w/ ~90,000 miles. So my wife was driving home and reports she hears a thunk of some sort, and then a scraping noise coming from the front of the car. She drives it home and I take a quick peek. Nothing dragging underneath, sounds like it's coming from the tires, so probably brake-related. But here are some additional clues: when I reversed down the (very short) driveway (at very low speed, <5mph), I heard the scraping. I then put it in D to go forward, again at low speed, and heard the scraping and then something went clank, like something was shifting in the other direction. Whenever I change direction, the clank sound and more scraping. Also: when the car is off and I'm gently rocking it back and forth, I hear squeaking, like springs of a bed.

For about the last 5000 miles I've been experiencing - only a few times a month, and totally out of the blue - a grinding noise coming from the front (i think left). This happens when I'm traveling at about 55-58 mph (never at lower speeds). It even happened once when the cruise was set. It gets pretty loud, and i find that if i pull over and stop for a few seconds, then keep going, that it stops. In other words, it seems that breaking to a stop disengages whatever the cause is. Also, no warning lights come on at all...like i said, it happens totally out of the blue. No, it's not the wheel bearing.
View 6 RepliesI have had my 07' Prius about a month now and have noticed a odd sound coming from the left front of the car when accelerating. When I accelerate I hear an off metallic crackling sound. It almost sounds like marbles swishing around. The sound is coming from the left side of the car in the engine bay. If I had to guess it sound like it's coming from under the invertor area. The sound only happens when I am accelerating at a moderate pace.
View 10 RepliesI have a weird noise from my 2007 Prius. It seems to be coming from the front left of the car. The car drives well, Tracks, feels stable at all speeds. It's just making a crazy noise at almost all speeds, it starts around 10 mph. It's a very DEEP ggggrrrrrrrrrrr. When the car is shifted in N it continues.
View 15 RepliesAbout 3-4 months ago, I noticed a low-pitched "roar" or whine coming from the front of my 07, especially at 35mph and above. The pitch of the sound gets higher the faster I go, but its never a high-pitched squeal or anything, just a roaring whine that has gotten somewhat more noticeable as time has gone on. 184,500 miles on the car, Goodyear Assurance tires that will probably need to be replaced fairly soon but are certainly not bald, reasonable tread left. I bought the car with just under 160K, I've put about 25K miles on the tires, but don't know the car mileage when the tires were originally installed.
I had the tires rotated during an oil change about 6 weeks ago, which made little if any difference in the sound. I asked a mechanic I know (and trust) at the non-dealer where the oil change and tire rotation was done, he said to turn slightly left and right while driving to see if the pitch changes, which may indicate a front bearing problem. There was maybe a slight pitch change in the whine when I did that, if any. He said it might be the start of a bearing problem. I also don't notice any change in the pitch or unusual behavior when making turns.
So is this a tire problem or front/rear bearing issue? I'm going to take it to the mechanic for him to test drive, would I be better served going to a dealer? Given the car mileage, it could very well be a bearing problem, it would certainly be due.
I just bought 2008 Prius (60tkm) and now i am wondering about noise coming from left front. It sounds very much like my older car breaks. High pitch squeezing noise. But it:
- doesn't appear immediately when you start driving
- doesn't appear on normal driving speed (> 30-40 km/h), or i just couldn't hear it
- does appear when driving very slow
- does appear when accelerate gently
Something with breaks? Sound is very loud.
My wife told me she was hearing a squeaking sound coming from the front end of our 2006 Prius (90,000 miles) along with a noise when she applied the brakes.

I had took it to the dealership before and they told me it was the big battery since I had the battery under warranty I just had it replaced and the 12v battery myself . Now when I went to start the car everything started fine car was running like 10 mins the heat never got warm then it shut off red exclamation popped. I turned off an on then I heard a humming kinda sounding pitch coming from front of car that got higher and higher then shut the car off and red triangle pops up and that's what it's doing now.
View 1 RepliesI've had some awful noise coming from the front drivers side of my car. Determining the likly cause to be the wheel bearing, I decided to tackle replacing the hub assembly as a lovely weekend project. Things were going along ok - Removed brake caliper, removed the axle nut (that wasn't fun), removed the rotor (rather persistently stuck on, but it gave in the end), and then came removing the hub assembly itself. Had a rented hub puller, put it on, started tightening it down and tapping on the hub as I went. It was getting pretty tight on there (was starting to worry about the safety of the cv shaft), and then as I tapped on the hub one last time, the hub and hub puller popped off the car... I was elated, until I realized rather than pulling the entire hub assembly out, it had actually separated the inner track of the bearing from the outer track, leaving the wheel bearing and flange behind inside the steering knuckle.
So, here I sit, with half my hub assembly on the ground and the other half still in the car. How to get the rest of the hub assembly out, now that there is nothing to really pull on? I've tapped around on it for a couple hours, and soaked it in enough penetrating oil to make the car flamable, but no give. I've even tried putting the hub bolts back in through the back and tapping on them with a hammer to no avail (probably going to have to replace the bolts now, but one problem at a time).
I'm having steady oil leakage on my S60. Coming from front right of vehicle, opposite turbo side. Took it to a mechanic and they diagnosed it as an oil hose leading from engine to turbo. Replaced it and it is still leaking from the engine. Hose showed no cracks or seal problems, so that wasn't it. Mechanic is taking the axle off to see if it is an engine block crack. If it is...welding aluminum is tough, I'm told, so it might need a new engine. Car has 101,000 miles and has had no other problems before this. Not sure I want to drop that much coin on a car that is getting older.
Could there be other culprits besides the engine block being cracked? I have been looking at some forums and see that PCV lines can get clogged, leading to an increase in pressure. Others mention the oil trap being plugged, and others mention a link between the cooling system and the oil line. The leak appears to be unrelated to the turbo, as that is dry, and is coming from the engine, but high enough that the mechanic can't see it without taking the axle off. What might make this problem occur besides a cracked engine block?
Changed my oil today. Noticed oil coming off the front of the engine. Where this could be originating or do I need to take the belt cover off? I hate having a leak. Wanna get it to stop. Just need to know what I may be up against. 1996 2.3ltr.....
View 9 RepliesI was teaching my kid how to drive in a parking lot and noticed white smoke coming from the front when parked. There seems to be a leak on the top side of the radiator, where the plastic top connects to the aluminum body. I also noticed that radiator fan does not come up at all. Outside temp was around 40F but I would think it should have come on when driving at 5-15 mph in a parking lot for 1+ hours. Temp gauge is on the left side of the middle indicator so technically the engine is not overheated, unless the temp probe is bad. What's the best way to troubleshoot this? I have a 2005 Santa Fe 3.5L GLS FWD.
View 19 RepliesI own a 2003 Buick Rendezvous, which several months ago started to have a water leak in the front passenger area (coming from under the dashboard). I've tried a local mechanic and a body shop but neither place (highly recommended by friends) could locate the source of the leak. It is obviously water (not coolant), and the volume suggests it is from the outside of the car and not condensation from the AC unit.
View 2 RepliesI've got a 1997 Dogde Ram 1500 Pickup. It's got a major coolant leak that seems to be coming right from the middle of the front of the engine. I can't see where it's coming from. I changed the thermostat and the water pump, but it seems to be even behind that. There is a rubber hose that comes off the water pump and disappears between the two banks. I can only see a tiny end of it, where it goes. It looks like getting to that would involve taking off the whole intake manifold. If that's the case, I might as well total the truck. I dunno...
View 12 RepliesI have a pretty good leak coming from the front of the rear diff. is this a common problem on the 10.5 ? How hard are these to do without a lift? I still have warranty left but will have to swap out exhaust so its almost a toss up whether I do the seal myself. Also was considering a new posi unit because seems like the original is about toast, might be a good excuse to swap a new one in. 2009 with 95,000 on it. Bought it a year ago with 70,000 on it, the rear was dry till at least 90,000. I serviced the fluid at about 90,000 and didn't have a leak so now a couple thousand miles and its gushing???????
View 7 RepliesMy '02 F150 just developed an oil leak. It appears to be coming from the passenger side front. I'm just assuming here, but could it more than likely be the timing cover? I'm 150 miles from home and I'm debating on getting the timing cover gasket on my way home tomorrow. Also, if it is the timing cover, what other gaskets should I replace? Pretty sure the water pump oring.
View 1 RepliesAcura 98 2.3 CL: Looking from the driver's seat, I saw white steam coming from the right hand side of the front. When I came out of the car and opened the hood (now, facing the car as if in oncoming traffic) I noticed the white steam came from the center-left side of the engine area (not the engine). There was also a fluid (slick but not oil - it smelled more like cooling fluid, or some kind of fluid) that was under the car, and it was not just a little bit - it dripped all over an area, probably the size of a small doormat, in the pattern of the car's movement as I parallel parked the car. It has been very cold the last few days, and all the sudden warmed up this week. Some more information:
The white steam and fluid only appeared/dripped three to four minutes after turning ON the de-fogger
the white steam came from the center-right (from the driver's seat vantage point) or, center-left (vantage point of someone facing the car).
the car, after being turned off, made a humming sound and then clicked off
The fluid from the car was slick but not oil (or not purely oil). It again reminded me more of a fluid, it did not smell like oil.
What is this? A blown gasket? Ruptured coolant area? Luckily the car did not do this until I parked it at home (it all happened within a period of about 120 seconds). I am concerned enough that I will not drive it and have it towed to the mechanic to fix. I love this car. (Is there anything I should ask the tower? From what I have been told there is a RIGHT way to tow the Acura!)
I have just purchased a 2010 FX4 5.4l on 5/4 and just found a leak coming from above the passenger side frame horn. It looks like it may be from the condensor but im not 100 percent certain. It is an odorless oil not condensate. It is a slow drip that i found after running the truck for a short time. the puddle it left was about the size of a bottom of a drinking glass.
