Just got a 2008. The Hybrid Battery Status indicator on the display is usually yellow. it will sometimes switch to blue. I assumed that yellow was the correct color but after reading some posts here it seems that they should be blue.

I would like to check the state of the hybrid battery and maintenance it if necessary. How could I get this done?
In the past I've had truck batteries last close up to 9 years but at 59 months one of my batteries is not looking that great. The battery status indicator is red. I checked the level of the side that appears to be leaking and it's ok. I've had no issues with starting and it seems to crank over just as fast as when new.
View 14 RepliesToday I went to the national car test (passed. but), when the car has been returned to me by the employee of national car test center I noticed one bar on the SOC. This happened for the first time.
Additional notes:
1) recently (about 4 weeks ago) I had to temporarily replace for second hand (20 bucks) 12v small auxiliary battery.
2) recently (withing last four weeks) I noticed high temperature in the boot compartment, I tried to investigate and the ducting leading from the HV battery was really hot, which means that my battery was really hot too.
I tried to explain this to myself that this might be due to HV operating at higher levels due to unknown state of the replaced 12v small aux battery (second hand product).
3) Today I noticed that technician at the test center used some spring assisted bar to press the brake on the car while he tested the car, I recon that maybe he have had powered off the car while doing so, is it possible that this might have contributed to the dropped SOC ?- it's just my guess.
I'm thinking to replace 12v aux battery to brand new battery and then test the operation of the fan and whether the temperature still rise. - is it good idea? Or should I just seek for the testing tool to determine the status of each of the modules?
If so, which testing device can handle this task? I heard from this forum about ELM obd bluetooth adapter. I use android device, would this be okay or should I look for another device perhaps scangauge?
I am getting a blinking red indicator on the status screen whenever the power is off (locked or unlocked), with a symbol of a padlock over a car.

View 2 RepliesI have a 2008 Prius with 106,000+ miles on it. It was running fine till 2 days ago, I didn't start it yesterday and today when i went to start it, I get the Hybrid System Malfunction light, along with check engine, the red triangle and TPMS light. The gas engine tries to start up, then 1 second later makes a grinding noise and turns off.
I am in Toronto and its cold, but not THAT cold yet. So I am doubtful its temperature related. I checked the fluids and they all seem to be sufficient (engine oil, radiator fluid, power steering fluid). I didn't notice any leaks under the vehicle either.
My 2005 prius with 81k on it just had the Hybrid vehicle immobilizer / Theft deterrent system indicator light spontaneously come on during a road trip where she was heavily loaded for the very first time since I have owned her for over 10 years. I stopped at a rest area and when I got back in it was on...immediately my batteries started draining. They are in 50wh mode which has never happened before, and charge will driving, but if I shut down for even a few minutes they are drained again. The dealer told me this was nothing to worry about and that as soon as they fully charged this would stop.
View 2 RepliesI have a 2007 Passat 2.0T with 5000 miles. I love the car, handling, comfort, power, refinement and all related but had a big shock when I went to the VW dealer for 5000 mile check. The service tech said my car had a optional computer software upgrade to regulate the intake valve (mostly to keep it from sticking open). I thought it was fine to do the upgrade EXCEPT when he said that if I did the upgrade , I would lose the gear indicator lights on the center dash between the speedo and tach! .....so, I would no longer have visual indication of Park, reverse etc....or indication of 1,2,3,4,5,6 for the tiptronic tranny mode. Why or if you have been able to do the software upgrade for the intake valve, WITHOUT losing the the indicator lights on the dash?

View 2 RepliesThis morning when I sit in my prius, engaged brake and pressed ON, I was surprised that the car was not starting. In fact in was in a status between OFF and IG-ON mode. The cabin lights were on, so as the head lights. The dash was lighted, but weird: the fuel indicator shown empty, though it was filled two days ago and the central screen was not lighted, so it was not the IG-ON mode in which the central screen should be lighted.
I cannot switch from the P mode, and I don't remember whether I saw the "ready" on the dash. I turned the system OFF and repeated the procedure but it was on the same situation. I was a bit panic, looking at the manual and after few minuets I decided to try again. And surprisingly it backed to normal. I drove it all the way to work and didn't notice anything wrong.
My concern: The hybrid battery, or the monitor really, has never, ever, not once, shown an all-bars charge. It is almost always at one bar down, and will drop below that but never goes above. My brother has a Gen I and his battery shows all bars from time to time. Not mine.
View 6 RepliesMy hybrid battery has been running low the past few days. This has never happened before, but it has been around 90 degrees out during the same few days. I noticed it this morning as I left for work. It was down to two bars when pulling out of the garage. I was getting pretty nervous, but at least the ICE was charging it. Although, it never fully charged the system, as I live pretty close to work. On the way home, I tried to drive around for a mile or so to see if I could get the battery fully charged.. The best I could do was four bars. Is this typical of the hybrid system in warm weather? Should I be worried about it? Also, the system has a fan, why doesn't it come on if the hybrid battery is so temp sensitive?

I need to know if it is possible to charge the hybrid battery when the car is idling or will this only discharge the hybrid battery and if so, is there any way to charge the hybrid battery other than driving the car?
View 6 Repliesi have a 2006 with almost 200k miles. Got the red triangle, check engine light, and the red car at the top of the MFD. I ran the codes and got P3000. Does this sound like traction battery failure? The car still turns on and ICE still cycles off and on.
View 19 RepliesI changed a bad cell in my hybrid battery (only one cell was bad) and put everything back together and it wont start. I've double checked all connections, fuses, everything I took off. I put the orange plug back in, fiddled with it, pushed it in more. It's got a brand new 12V battery and I dropped it off at autozone to get it charged up as well. View 5 RepliesI have a 2007 Prius with 107k miles. Last July it had a minor drivers side front end collision. Last November it had the hybrid battery replaced. I believe all this is unrelated just putting it out there for information.
I am currently having the red triangle pop up intermittently. When it does a "problem" message will display on the MFD. This seems to occur most often after a long downhill or when the Energy display is showing the hybrid battery is nearly full.
The hybrid battery seems to be functioning normal and the car is driving normal and has expected fuel economy. I do have a headlight that cuts out occasionally but no other noticeable electrical problems. I do not have a diagnostic device to get the codes.
A year and a half ago, I had the hybrid battery warning lights come on and had it towed to the dealer. After given the option of replacing the battery for $4300, I took it home and did a single cell replacement (all cells ~8V, one at 6.6V which I replaced), which seemed to be all good until yesterday. Back with the warning lights and blower fan, I jumped to the conclusion that I have a similar situation, removed the battery and all cells are 8.04V +/- .05V except for 1 cell at 7.92. I am not convinced that this cell is really the culprit.
View 11 RepliesCan we check the health of the hybrid battery like you can the 12V. I encountered an issue where the hybrid battery had difficulty getting a "full" charge. It would frequently be in the three to two bar range which got my attention. I did learn that there is not a way to check the hybrid battery. I also have not encountered the problem since crossing the great divide on the way back ....
View 5 RepliesMy 2005 prius will not start. We had some body work done to it after a deer ran into me. They did a small amount of welding and had disconnected both batteries. Now the car will not start. It can be put in auxiliary mode but if you try to start it with your foot on the brake, it flashes some lights for a few seconds and then goes dead. Is the hybrid battery too low to start the car? It was pretty low. before the batteries were disconnected. Or did they possibly do something wrong when they disconnected the hybrid battery? Final question would be do they have to do some reprogramming after disconnecting the hybrid battery?
View 11 RepliesIn comparing the battery drains on a Camry hybrid versus a Prius Gen II hybrid I discovered both have three stages of battery drains after a door open incident. On a Gen II Right after the door is open the drain was 1.37 amps.
