Prius (2004-09) :: How Does Regenerative Braking Work
Dec 4, 2014
I'm just wondering while under regenerative braking, is the car braking with only the front two wheels? And four wheel braking starts when the friction brakes engage? Or does the rear drum brakes always engage even though the front is braking through the electric motor?

I’ve searched for an answer to my question but have not found it yet.

Not a Prius owner but am curious about the regenerative braking. When in regenerative braking mode, do the friction(disk) brakes stay off until regenerative braking fades or do they combine with regenerative braking (blended braking)?

Car makes louder than normal regenerative braking (Hybrid Sound). Seems normal when braking at high speeds... then when the speed drops below 30mph the sound is noticeable louder. See Video for example sounds while braking (17, 35 and 50 seconds into the video are most notable).

Car drives normal other than the regenerative braking sound... Car was involved in a front end accident. Damages were repaired and seem minor. Front Bumper cover, hood, Radiator, Fans, RF Fender. Front cross member and other frame areas look untouched.

I've been having some issues with my FM radio for a while, I had really bad static when using the rear defogger but they have since replaced my back window under warranty and that has fixed it. Though, I'm still getting static or fuzz when my foot is off the gas and I'm either coasting and/or braking. When the signal is weaker it's really bad.

I have a 2003 Prius that I have had about 4 years. It has under 80,000 miles on it and I have the Ecrostech Scanner which I have had for about 3 years. For the time I have had the Ecrostech I have noticed times when the regenerative braking was not working when I would depress the brake pedal. I understand the regen does not work from about 7 mph and below but my system often does not work even when it is above that speed. I have not been able to force it into regen. It seems to have a mind of its own as in perhaps a faulty ecu.

I have a 2004 F150 XLT and the passenger side tail light doesn't work whatsoever. The light does work for hazards, turn signal, or when braking. The passenger front turn signal works, so does the front and the driver sides tail light. Only the 1 tail light doesn't work. I bought a new brake light bulb and it didnt't fix it, so i swapped the drivers and passengers bulbs out, and it still didn't work. I replaced the 10 amp fuse (#36) in the fuse box. What is causing the problem.

My '07 shakes when braking below 7 mph. Coming to a complete stop is never perfectly smooth unless medium to hard braking is required. My thought was that the MG2 is in creep mode even while my foot is lightly on the brake pedal, causing the jerking, but creep works properly while not braking.
The shaking is very steady, at about 6 Hz, the same frequency as the "popping" noise one hears when stopped at the light with the foot lightly on the brake; just enough to keep the car from creeping, but not mashed far enough to turn off the creep current from the battery. I take it there's two sensors on the pedal as well as a potentiometer. Could the problem be mitigated if the creep current were cut off at the presence of a foot rather than having to press harder? There is no shaking on a harder stop, only the slow ones.
Another thought I had was that the pressure pump itself is supplying the brake pressure to the friction pads, causing the pulsing. In a previous thread, we discussed why my pump was coming on so often. Perhaps a leak in the canister causing the pressure not to be buffered, and the pump itself providing the pressure.

I bought my Prius 9 weeks ago with 201k miles. It now has 214k on the odometer... that's right, 13,000 miles in just over 2 months. I love it. It's been problem free so far until last week when someone pulled out in front of me. I had to brake hard and when I did i got the red triangle exclamation point. No words, just the symbol.

For a slight re-cap, first time I had to hit the brakes suddenly, the front 12V plug went out. Alright, thought that was a bit odd, but continuing on.
Second time was a few years later, earlier this summer actually. Had to hit the brakes fairly hard to avoid hitting an idiot dashing across lanes. Entire MFD, radio, cig plug, the whole front works went out. Got online and after a bit of searching found a post saying to check the ACC-B fuse. Sure enough that was it.
So now we're at the third time. Same thing, sudden braking, ACC-B fuse blew. Replaced it, started up the car, blew again. Replaced it, started up the car, blew again. so now I'm at 3 25A fuses that have blown in the past 2 hours, 2 of them within 60 seconds of the car turning on.
One thing I did think was kind of interesting is when I turned the car on, I could hear various noises which sounded like electrical components doing a startup sequence, then it blows. The only thing I have in that front area is a tiny 12V camera, nothing else plugged in at all.

Yesterday I was driving the prius when I came to stop for a red light there was a man hole cover that was sunken into the ground fairly deep and when the prius went over it while I was braking I lost braking power for maybe .5 of a second and the traction control light kicked on. This has happened a few times but this time was the worst, is this normal for an 06 prius or should I get it checked out? This NEVER happened in florida we just moved to chattanooga (roads are terrible) the car is also not enjoyable to drive here there are too many tight corners/bumpy roads I'm really thinking about selling it for a larger car that can handle the roads here better. My gti also never does this going over the same bumps/manhole covers.

Quick back story, bought the car a year ago, seller told me it was in an accident and the radiator was replaced. He let me know that the discharge AC hose was missing and that the other hose was disconnected. I also noticed that the low pressure cap is missing. I recently ordered and installed the discharge hose with the intention of filling the system later.
I have always noticed a noise/vibration coming from the passenger side when braking at low speeds. I havent noticed at higher speeds but maybe there is more road noise. The best I can describe the noise is that is sounds like a compressor running. I have a hunch it's the AC compressor and might be related to the regenerative braking, but I am no expert.

I have a 2005 prius. Got it 7 months ago. I hear brakes squeal when braking. I think I may need new pads. Are they easy to replace?

I am trying to troubleshoot a sound that I've begun to notice coming from the front of my '08 Prius. I've had this car since new, and it now has a little over 40,000 miles on it. (Please note the sound I'm referring to is not the brake pump electric "whirring" noise that happens evey so often, it's definitely something new/different.) I first noticed it maybe a year ago, but it seems to be happening progressively more often.

Today I started noticing a squeaking sound coming from the brake pedal when braking slowly. After I put the car in park and inspected any noises from the outside, I realized that a squeaking noise was also coming from the rear brake drums of the car. It was perfectly find yesterday and this morning it started.

Bought my Prius (2005, with 160K miles) about a month ago and since I've had it I am hearing a metal on metal grinding noise when braking at low speed. How loud the sound is depends on how hard I am on pushing on the brakes. One of my co-workers has the same model and said that his does not make that sound. Not sure if its just because it has after-market brake pads or something? This noise only occurs when braking at low speeds (below 10 MPH) so I assume its an issue with the front brakes.
Is this something I need to get looked at by the dealership? I had a local mechanic that worked on my old Honda beater take a look and he said that the rotors and brake pads looked new and wasn't sure why they'd make noise.

I have an 06 Prius that I have had for about a year or more now. When I bought it, it needed a transaxle. I replaced that and have been driving it since. I have this problem that seems to be getting worse. When I push the brakes the car will make a popping noise, and it seems to be getting more frequent. I do not get any noticeable noises when turning or just driving normally.
The noise is quite noticeable, when I am in a parking lot and hit the brakes next to someone, people will give me the look like "what's wrong with your car". I am not positive where this noise is coming from, but my best guess is that it is coming from the right side. The popping seems like something is bound up and then releasing. I can also replicate the noise some times when I initially accelerate. My best guess is that it is being caused from the engine/trans weight shifting, but I am not sure a motor mount can make the popping noise I am getting.

So my dealer diagnosed my 2007 Prius with a transaxle issue, but what bothers me is that it doesn't make the sound all the time. When I brake lightly, there is no sound and when I brake heavily there isn't either. It is only when I do a medium brake above 7 mph of course and around 20's mph range. I am hoping for something besides the transaxle...maybe a wheel bearing...anything.

Its a 2009 with about 75K miles. Back last year my wife drove through some thick mud, and this caused brake failure....yellow exclamation mark, VSC, and red brake warn lights all on and the buzzer sounding. I did not have mini VCI/ techstream at the time, but I went to car wash and sprayed out the insides of wheels heavily, and then did the jumper trick while pumping brakes 8 times, and the faults cleared and brakes worked perfectly for some months--- until this weekend. We had very heavy rain again, and the tires were encased heavily in mud again. I figured it must be a wheel speed sensor signal problem again. So I took it to car wash to clean inside of wheels.
Now I have the mini-VCI /techstream running on a laptop to check it out. I ran the health check and it came back with code C1365 for the ABS/ braking system. I cleared all DTCs, and the fault lights cleared, but the brakes soon failed again with the same dash indications. Tried once more, same thing. Then I remembered about the trick last year of jumpering the diagnostic connector. This temporarily clears the fault, letting the brakes work fine, until the next time you start the car. Then it comes back. I clicked on that fault code in techstream, and noted that code C1365 was telling me that the accumulator press. sensor voltage was below threshold. Should been at least 4.7 volts, but it was at 4.37.
But the brakes work perfect as long as you don't shut it down! So how can a part really be bad? If it is indeed bad as the code says, is this sensor replaceable by itself, or does the whole accumulator have to be replaced? Is it a job a DIY mechanic can do? I am able to at least drive the car, although my wife can't. I just stick two pins in the diagnostic connector, and I connect them temporarily with a jumper to do the reset trick before each drive.

I am just trying to find out if this means I need to have something checked like coolant hardware/fluid...
It is over 100 F these past several days and at 35 minutes just hopping off the freeway, and then again today, coming down a big hill at another part of the freeway, I noted that as I quickly had to brake the system made the computer noise (same as when I switch from the power view to the trip view), red triangle comes on, no other indicators. The first time it happened I was back on the throttle almost right away and red triangle went back off.
Everything fine. Same today but it was on until I was back on the throttle at the bottom of the hill...
