Prius (2004-09) :: Headlight Goes Off After Some Time
Apr 5, 2014
One of the headlights will turn off after some driving time. If I turn the light off and on it will come back on. Asked Toyota, of course they said it is because you are not using OEM Toyota bulbs. I have the same bulbs on both sides. I even replaced the bulb on the "bad side".
Still the same issue. If the bulb is the problem, it would just be off, why it comes back on after "off/on" exercise? Another symptom I saw last week. When switching to high beam light both lights go off. "Off/on" of the car resolved this. This happened only once though.
The car was in the front accident 2 years ago and Toyota repaired it with life time warranty. But I am not sure if it related or not and how to convince Toyota that there is an issue here and not a "bulb" issue.

My other D1S headlight bulb was fainting but didn't got chance to replace it until it went off totally. After replacement everything worked normally but after about one week, the replaced bulb does not lit up every-time. I needed to switch light on and off few times to make it work.
And to be more suspicious, now the other bulb has done to same... haven't lit up always. And couple of times they did it same time, I didn't have headlights in darkness at all. Just bad contacts to bulb or first symptoms of ballasts going to an end? What solution you can use there to clean contact surface not to mess the light housing?

My prius 2008 94k miles makes this strange noise from time to time, randomly. What it might be?

Driving last night, I heard this horrible scraping sound from time to time, but I couldn't stop right away. When I got home, I saw that the bottom cover (or whatever the proper name for it is) had come loose at the left front -- I assume from hitting the ground once too often (damn this low clearance). I took a pic, but it's not too clear. The front edge is frayed a bit.

I have my daytime running lights on all the time since purchase in 2004 - this is the first time I am changing any kind of bulb on the car.Headlights are ok when starting car, but after it warms up the headlight goes off. Took it to my local repair shop and they said the connector was loose but that night the headlight was off again.

Bought an 04 a couple of weeks ago and the passenger side headlight is way high.I turned the adjustment knob and it does nothing. The drivers side light is fine, but out of curiosity I turned that knob and it didn't do anything either.I'm thinking about buying an aftermarket assembly.

Every now and then one of the HID headlights goes out on our 2006 Prius, seems to be a random event not favoring either headlight. Shutting the headlights off, then turning them back on again corrects the issue. The problem with using this fix is that it isn't good for the HID bulb.

I have a 2009 Prius with about 36,500 miles on it. I dropped a friend off at the airport tonight and noticed in the reflection of the car in front of me that my right headlight was out -- a fact my friend confirmed when he got out of the car.

The passenger side headlight of my fiance's 2007 Prius keeps going out intermittently. It's a touring model with HID's. I replaced the bulb already and the problem persists. I searched and found that there is a TSB about it [URL]...................... It sounds like it's either the bulb (which I replaced), the wiring, or the HID ECU.

As I stated in my other (and only) post... I just bought a used 2008 Prius. Tonight I noticed the driver's side headlight is out. I went to Autozone and they told me I needed a $10.99 replacement bulb...
I bought it... took a quick look and couldn't see how to get to it - so I put it away for the night...Now I see on here there is some sort of "bulb issue" with Toyota?

I drive a 2007 Prius - about 185k miles on it and purchased it used a few years ago. It's needed minor maintenance to it but overall it's served me well.
I hopped in my car this evening and went to turn on the headlights. After turning the knob, the lights came on - then both faded and turned off. These are halogen bulbs. Here's what I have tested - I don't have light in my driveway...

It appears my prius headlight plastic has yellowed over the years. How I can get this crystal clear again?
I've tried numerous cleaning agents, waxes, etc and it doesn't seem to work.

2008 Prius... The right side main head lamp sometimes does not come on when I switch on the lights, this started happening about 10 days ago, rarely at first, about 50% of the time now.

There is water condensation (not much) behind the section of my drivers side headlight assembly where the turn signal is located and it REALLY bugs the hell out of me. The only way I could think it got there was when I was washing under the hood. The good news is the turn signal socket is easy to access and remove.

I replaced both bulbs on my '07 (HID bulbs...lots-o-fun doing that!), now the left bulb is giving me issues, like the right did. Replaced them both with 6000 bulbs instead of the stock 4.3k. Am wondering if it was a good idea at all going with the 6k, thinking they might draw more wattage, thereby causing more current flow through other circuits, causing failure of something much more costly...

I have a 2009 prius with 85k miles on it, bought it two weeks ago, right off the bat I noticed that the left headlight, while driving, will frequently go out. It comes back on when I turn the headlights off and on again, and goes out again later.
Sometimes it stays on, other times it goes right out. I took the headlamp off, disconnected all wires, and cleaned it of any corrosion that was found and reconnected it, and the light still went out. What would be causing this/ what a fix is non mechanic oriented?
Worth mentioning that I've noticed condensation build up on the inside of the headlamp occasionally, and one time both lights flickered and then went out, but that hasn't happened since.

Passenger side headlight doesn't flicker or anything unusual but it just goes dead at one time then goes back on. For sure, something loose inside that does it. Bulb is still good.

It appears that my drivers side low beam on my 08 prius shuts off from time to time. It seems to be during the rain, or damp weather. how can i figure out where the break in the wire is, if it is not clearly visible, OR is there a common site that separates in this model.

I have a 2008 Prius pkg 6, passenger side headlight goes out, and then later comes back on. Went to parts store and they sold me a lamp to replace it with. Not only do I not know how to replace it, I do not know whether it is a Halogen or HID lamp?

First a bit of history: About a year ago, I received the headlight leveling system warnings comprising a red triangle alert with exclamation point in the middle located on the dash, combined with a yellow(ish) warning symbol on the center stack display comprising what looks like a headlight with up and down pointing arrows. Eventually, the warning lights went out, but the HID headlamps were left pointing in a down position that lit barely 10 ft in front of the car.. This is is supposedly their default position when the sensor breaks, most commonly due to moisture entering the sensor innards resulting in corrosion of the contact points. I effected the repair quoted elsewhere on this forum, and it was good to go.
