Prius (2004-09) Fuel :: Consistently Getting 35 - 37 Mpg, Nothing Higher
Apr 16, 2012
I have a 2004 prius with 149k on it and can't seem to break into the 40 mpg range. I live in an area with some hills, but nothing too crazy. I have even had trips of 60+ miles on pretty flat freeways/highways/roads and have only hit 38 mpg driving with a very light foot, coasting down hills, coasting to stop lights and using cruise control. I have tried keeping my speeds low and just cant get great gas mileage. I am not sure what else to try.
In the past few weeks I have had the oil, transaxle and inverter coolant changed and the water pump was changed 15k ago. I also had the spark plugs changed, air filter and have new tires.
btw, I bought the car used a few months back and have been getting the same mileage since I got it. I have not noticed any improvement from any of the maintenance I have done.

I have a 2008 Prius and my car consistently tops out just under 40 MPG - I've never had a tank last over 325 miles. Seems like it's somewhat below the average.

I knew when I bought my car it wouldn't get optimum mpg as no car would with the many short trips I have to make every day but I have 5000 miles on it already and have averaged approx 46 with all the city and highway combined.
I took it into Toyota last week for the tire rotation and ever since it has been horrible. There were 120 miles on the tank and I refilled because I couldn't stand to see it staying around 39 on the computer. I have never seen that before. I checked the tired and they had brought them down to 32psi so I put then back to 40/38 and refilled.
Not noticing much of an improvement, sadly. Hovering at 40 mpg still. Weather has changed a lot. Temps much higher daily mid 80s to low 90s. This is my first summer with the car and yea the ac has been on nonstop with the higher temps.

Recently had extensive work done on my 2005 F250 PSD. 4 injectors replaced, fuel regulator, and STC fitting on HPOP.
Got the truck back, and the fuel gauge, and "distance to E" display are working intermittently.
When the truck went in for repair, it was about 1/8 tank. After repairs, shop put about 30 miles on the truck.
I picked it up, and the gauge read E, and display said 0 kms to E. I filled the truck up, and the gauge still read E, and said 0 kms to E.
I then drove for a while, then powered down, and back up again, and gauge read below E (like when truck not running), and display had 4 dashes...no numbers, for distance to E. I powered down, and then back up, then it read 696 kms to E, and gauge working normally.
This morning, on a cold start, the 4 dashes, and empty reading returned. I shut off truck, and restarted it, and it started working again.
Could the shop have damaged the sending unit, while driving 30 miles, with so little diesel in the tank?

I didn't know how else to word this, but I know that the Prius has a few "stages" it goes through as it heats up to a certain temperature and whatnot...
Here's why I'm posting, in summary: I have a 2006 with 115K. When I was driving a 150 mile trip, for the first 30-45 minutes on cruise at 72mph, my mileage was very poor, much lower than average (40-42mpg). But after about 45 minutes, I slowed down for some construction area, then resumed cruising at 72mph, it jumped to about 48-49 mpg for the rest of the trip.
For the first 45 mins, it felt like it was struggling, because I could feel like the ICE rpm's were higher than normal for that speed. I even tried to gun it to 80+ and coast down, but it still felt like it was working hard. Finally, when I slowed down to 60-ish, then sped back up, it started operating normally.

I seem to have gotten a hum coming from the front end when I reach 40mph & higher. Todate, I have not gotten any warning lights, red trinagle etc, but wanted to see if maybe there were some codes thrown.
Lastnight, I put the front on jack stands & had my wife put the car in D & step on the gas while I was laying under the car. The noise is coming from the transmission where the axles plugin. My fear is I need a new tranny.....but if its a code related to the hybird system, I might be covered under warranty.
By the way, my Prius is a 06 w/ 108xxx miles. I changed the CVT fluid around 70xxx miles.

I have a 2007 Prius (now has 220K + miles) I bought used about 2 years ago with 150K miles. I finally got used to the car sounds so this is something new, or rather it's becoming louder and enough for me to question it. The car is still quiet at low speeds but this sounds like something related to how fast the car is rolling, not the engine acceleration. It doesn't sound like it's coming from the wheels. It's a low roar like sound, not high pitched and it sounds like it's coming from under the middle to front of the car as if related to perhaps the drive train. If I am up to 40-50 mph and just rolling (foot off the gas) down a long hill, the sound is there. It gets louder the faster I go. Could it be a transmission sound? I've always had manuals so this is my first automatic transmission car.

I found recently that my 04' Prius' engine easily goes higher rev than before (based on engine sound pitch). It happens mainly when cold start, go up hill. After warmed up and on flat road, it goes back to normal. Overall, still in great condition at 211K. MPG stays at 46 on meter when temp is around 45F with 50% highway drive at 100 miles/day. I suspect the serpentine belt slippery or something. What do you think? I think the belt is original. I bought it used at 104K.

I own a 2005 Prius with about 145,000 miles on it. I love it. However, I've noticed that lately, the vent in the back by the window will come on and make a lot of noise. Some research has told me that this is the air vent for the battery that is in the back, and usually comes on when the temps are higher and the battery is starting to get a little overheated.

2004 ford ranger edge 3.0 misfires. It does it consistently. The check engine light stays on all the time, but flashes when idling. I have put it on a code reader and it said misfire on cylinders 1 and 2 I believe. I have changed the coil pack and CPS also. It has been doing this for some time now. It doesn't have any problems stalling out or starting up just misfires bad while running. Oh, and you can also smell fuel while your idling pretty strong. And I have also replaced the plugs and wires.

My 2008 Prius has a dash that won't light up consistently. Also won't turn off until you hold the Start button for about 10 seconds. I found out my problems were a result of a bad 12v battery. So I changed it and the problem continues. Took the battery out and it tests fine. What else could be the problem and how can I fix it.

I took my 2008 Prius to Jiffy Lube to have oil changed. When driving away, I made it about one block and all warning lights came on: Master Warning, Hybrid System Warning, Brake System Warning, Malfunction, etc. I pulled the car over and stopped. I started the car again, lights still there - drove 2 blocks back to Jiffy Lube and lost momentum about one block away, with pedal to floor, I could drive about 5 miles an hour into the bay. They looked at it for about 30 minutes and claimed I had bird seed that dropped under the air filter.... I said "goodbye" called AAA and had it towed to my dealer. They said it was because air had entered the system due to my being low on fuel. I have never heard of being low on fuel and it causing the car to shut down nor did I ever get a warning of low gas, still on one bar. Each time I restarted the car at Jiffy Lube, it started fine, drove forward or backward, then lost momentum again. Still no warning of being out of gas. The ticket from the dealer states:
"Vehicle low on fuel causing ECU to shut down fuel injectors when engine started to misfire. Found codes P0A0F, P3190 in system. Added 5 gallons of fuel and reset ECU."

I have a 2008 prius. Usually it gets me around 52-55mpg, I've had it since January. Since a couple of days ago its not giving me anything above 49. I know thats a normal number, but considering the fact that its usually quite a bit higher I'm wondering what the cause of the drop is. Also around the same time, when I pull out of my driveway I notice what appears to be a bit of water leakage. Its under the vehicle in the front center, and it only happens when I start the car for the day and pull out of my driveway (its on an incline).

On my way into work this morning I noticed that my brake lights don't always light up under very light braking. Noticed this on 2010?

The driver's side front and rear has been consistently loosing 2 -3 PSI more than the other side.
Only had it for like 2 months and I don't have anything loaded like luggage in the vehicle.
Is this something I need to be concerned about?

I just installed a gt2871 turbo and I'm experiencing fuel dump at higher rpms. It's just like it dies at the top. My buddy said I probably need new injectors.

A few days ago my 98 Cutlass had to be towed because of a broken brake line. It was towed 35 miles to my mechanic. Two fuel lines needed to be replaces and i guess it was a real problem getting to stuff to fix. When I picked the car up tonight I noticed that the fuel gauge didn't work right. When the key is off the needle points straight down toward the floor. when I turn on the ignition, the needle moves up and pins itself against the little metal pin below the "E" and can't go any higher. The only cause I can think of is that the needle bounced over the pin while it was being towed and when I turn on the ignition it tries to move to where it is supposed to but is stopped by the pin. The only way I can think of to fix this is to turn the car upside down and rotate it counterclockwise until the needle moves back over the pin.

2006 Chevy Silverado 2500HD Duramax.
When I park it with the front end elevated even just slightly higher than the rear the fuel system loses pressure and I have to pump it up using the manual pump under the hood. This usually happens after 15 - 20 minutes of park time. When it is parked flat it usually will last hours or more, and if I park it with the rear elevated over the front then it doesn't seem to have a time frame. in other words it does not lose pressure at all.

Sometimes I will stop at a light and my idling rpm will go from 600 (usual rate she idles at) to about 950. While this may seem inconsequential in the grand scheme of things, it's noticeable enough that it seems like the car wants to go. It'll lead me to depress the brake more. You can also hear the higher pitch of the faster turning engine (it is a 50% increase in speed). This will happen at random times so I have not been able to pinpoint if it is caused by a particular driving style. ECM for this?

I got a "P054F- Idle Control System - Fuel Quantity Higher Than Expected" this morning and again this afternoon. I did a search and the only threads that contain the code are the codes lists and one guy who got the code but no follow up. I found a few instances through Google, but almost all of them said the dealers just reset the code. It seems to happen in cold weather, which we are having. Both instances were in the same situation, remote start warmed up then short town drives. No CEL came on. Anyway, I reset it and I'll see what happens.

I have a 2004 prius and my MFD recently went out. So I decided to go looking for a good MPG app for my iphone since I could no longer use the car's built in feature.
I really don't like the native apps that just keep the data confined to the phone and I find emailing my data around and having to do things in a spreadsheet to be painful.
I want my data all online, but the app to be native, so it's snappy and responsive.
