My 2006 Prius with 243,000 miles has an engine rattle under stress. When accelerating quickly or climbing a really steep hill it will rattle. I think it sounds like a chain. If I ease of the gas pedal, the rattle stops. Is this normal? Does this sound like a timing chain issue?
View 19 RepliesToyota says the code is P0420 and the Catalytic Converter is rattling under heavy acceleration showing the Catalytic converter is bad and should be replaced. Toyota wants 2,334.00 which seems very high to me. Is it the Catalytic converter? The car is a 2004 Toyota Prius.

View 9 RepliesI am the original owner of a 2006 Prius with 265k miles. I use Mobil 5-30 synthetic oil and I drive a steep hill every day and the engine knocks in the summer afternoons when I use cheap 87 Octane gasoline from Safeway or Costco. If I use better 87 octane gasoline (Chevron, Shell) generally there is less knocking. Also during the winter months no knocking even with cheap gasoline.
During summer I can sometimes make the knocking go away by accelerating or decelerating. The knocking is intermittent and generally occurs only during the steepest parts of the commute. The engine might knock for 30 seconds to 60 seconds before its goes away as I try to change the engine RPM.
Unfortunately I am burning some oil at a rate of approximately half a quart every 5k miles. Generally I watch the oil level, but there have been cases where the oil level has fallen below the lowest mark on the dip stick so I suspect I have some carbon build up.
I've read posts where others have used additives like gumout regane and I've read posts that say not to use additives.
Problem description: A loud metallic rattling sound from under the car under moderate to heavy engine load, only when engine/exhaust is/are cold. It is noticeable from within the cabin with the windows rolled up and the sunroof closed. Crack a window or the sunroof and it's pretty loud. The first time I heard I, I thought "this is not good".
This is not an octane ping or valve train noise. It sounds like a coffee can with marbles being shaken in concert which what might be the rapping of a V8 engine's exhaust. I had a Sunbeam Tiger that rapped in the upper rpm ranges and this reminded me of that but instead of rapping, it shakes a can with marbles.
There has been much discussion and speculation as to what causes this. It does seem to occur only with late - 04 and up V8 Touaregs with the "sport" exhaust that replaced the "std"(?) exhaust used on the majority of the 04s.
Observation: I looked very closely at the heat shields, looking for ways they could rattle. On the passenger side (LHD), the heat shield has three main sections:
- Front: around/near the secondary cat (tightly secured)
- Rear: around/near the rear differential (tightly secured)
- Middle: between the two mentioned above (loosely secured)
The three sections overlap a little where they meet. It was very easy to tap on the middle shield and make a loud metallic sound. I put my finger between the two shields (where they meet) to isolate the two metal pieces and tapped again, and the noise was gone.
Theory: The harmonic resonance of the exhaust under load vibrates the middle heat shield and it rattles against the front and/or rear shields. As the shields heat up, they flex enough to provide clearance between each other and the noise goes away. This may be unique to the "sport" exhaust if (and I am only speculating) the heat shields were changed (in design or fitment) when they changed the exhaust.
Experiment: I tried a very simple experiment. I slightly bent the edges of the middle shield (~1/2 inch) where it was coming in contact with the front and rear shields. The allowed me to tap rather hard on any of the shields without them rattling against each other.
Result: I make the tweaks to the shields Sunday night. When I drove to work this morning, I put the transmission in sport mode and ran WOT until it shifted. Normally, I would have heard the sound (very loudly) but it was gone. No metallic sound. Not completely convinced, I repeated the experiment on the way home and, again, the sound was gone.
Summary: It was cool out when I was going to, and from, work (64F) and this would normally be the perfect set up for making the sound. I think that tweaking the heat shield has solved the noise on my Touareg. I am tempted to go back under there and pop-rivet a little brace between the shields so that they cannot rattle against each other again. On the other hand, I may just leave it be and do the pop-rivets if the noise comes back.
Anyway, I was excited to find a potential solution for my Touareg and wanted to share it will you all. I will post back after a while and report how it goes in the long term. Lastly, I really liked being able to put the air suspension in xtra-offroad and get under the car (easily) without using a jack....
My '06 Prius just started making this noise. the check engine light is NOT on. I haven't really heard this noise before in my recollection. I just got an oil change 3 days ago and when I got the oil change there was no indication from the dealership that there were any issues. The engine only makes this noise when the combustion engine is engaged. I can't see any wobbling on the belt drives or and loose parts in the engine. The spin appears to be coming from the engine block or around the pullys for the belt. My first thought is that it could be dirty gas because I first heard this sound after filling up. I am 300 miles from home and have to drive home today.
View 1 Repliesi have been hearing a rattling noise coming from the engine under acceleration only. It isn't a super consistent rattle, seems to only happen when accelerating from lower speeds. And sometimes you don't hear and other times you do. It's not a bad rattle or knock it's more of a ticking/light rattling sound that is definitely abnormal.
I know my brake accumulator is barking at me and the 3 way coolant valve is going bad as sometimes I get a constant pumping sound. I don't think these have anything to do with it but thought I'd mention it.
i started my '04 prius (~110k miles) this morning, went back into the house to grab a few things, & then I started hearing a loud rattling sound from the engine for a few seconds before the engine died.
The dash and MFD lite up with these symbols in the attached images.
i am the original owner of a 2004 Prius with about 120k miles. I am considering replacing the struts even though they aren't horrible. I figure I won't have the car more than 240k miles so might as well get the struts on earlier rather than later so I enjoy them as long as possible.

View 14 RepliesAt first, I only noticed the driver's side door rattling when I listening to a song heavy in base. Now, I notice it rattling when I drive on a rough road. I can stop the rattling by pushing my left knee against the door while I'm driving, but I shouldn't have to do this....
I took my car to the dealership a week before my 1yr was up, and they told me the rattle happened in EVERY Hyundai vehicle. The rep told me, "I just talked to my boss and he has that Genesis over there. It's a 35k car and the driver's door rattles."
Well I drove the wife to work in her Prius this morning. I noticed in heavy stop go traffic, the engine was idling more than normal. Normally the EV light is on when I am stationary ( idle) in traffic, but for some reason today almost more than 70% of the stop go traffic the RPM was felt via the brake pedal and EV light was off, but the battery had at least 3 bars or more I think.
The load on the vehicle was the usual, AC on at 65 in ECO mode and radio. I guess this question might be more a hybrid newbie question than anything else. So, just curious what "drives" the vehicle to be in EV mode when stationary in traffic or in my case earlier this morning what prevented it?
Non mechanical squeaking noise coming from rear passenger side cabin area. Only appears to happen under 75 percent or so acceleration and slightly heavy braking. Sounds like an electrical squeal intermittent under the above conditions.

In the morning the front windshield and rear hatch had heavy interior condensation, and starting yielded the red triangular of death & no power. (Trying not to panic 100 miles from anywhere, and no cell phone service.)
I have 2012 aqua and it has done 12,000 KM on it. When I press the throttle further, the ICE kicks in and there is a kind of rattling sound coming from ICE at times (not Rev up sound). However, when the car is in idle , the ICE kicks in to charge the battery and that time I hear only engine Rev up sound and not a rattle.
View 14 RepliesI have a 2016 SRW Long bed Super Duty that is close to warranty expiration. Recently, I've started hearing noise from the back door rubber weatherstripping when there is torsion force from uneven chassis pressure (like going over a speed bump at an angle, one wheel at a time).
My previous truck was a 2001 F-250 short bed and I had no such rubbing noise with it for 250K miles, at least after they replaced the cab mounts.
Is this normal for a long bed?
It also feels like the front-end is loose when I hit a bump at high speed - it sort of rattles around before settling back down.
And, the dealer has never been able to duplicate my problem where the front left or right wheel makes noise while going around a corner while braking - sounds like a brief engagement of the anti-lock brake system.
I doubt the symptoms are related but I'll toss them all out there for you opinions. I doubt the dealership will be able to duplicate the cab noise - maybe I should drive it for them.
Because the F-350 is under warrantee I haven't worked on it myself or done any mods yet. This has been a fantastic vehicle otherwise.
I have a '06 F150 King Ranch with a after market lift. I sometimes hear a cracking, metal stress sounding noise from under the right side under carriage, I thought is was my brakes or shocks or something. If I take a right turn down an angle while braking or it happened during a rainy day going straight at a slight downward incline during braking, there's a knocking like pac..pac..pac..pac sound from under my rear or sometimes front passenger side fender well. I've taken it to a brake specialist and had it inspected by a mechanic, but no visible signs of a problem. What this might be? I told my brake specialist to check my anti lock system as the sound is evenly spaced and he said nothing is wrong.

View 19 RepliesI recently had my oil changed at Toyota dealership at 11,700 miles. Picked it up after 2 days and upon starting heard a very loud rattling sound from engine; as if it were going to drop right out of the car. Shut it off and re-started ok, but very concerned. No repeat of incident until this morning. Same sound at start-up (now at 12,600 miles). My daughter who was inside the house could hear the noise. I used the car the previous day, parked outside in driveway as usual. Now very very concerned.
View 19 RepliesRecently, my 04 accent (97,000 miles on engine and auto trans) has started to develop a rattling or Clanking noise coming from the engine at low RPM's. I flushed the engine and changed the oil and oil filter, thinking it could be due to oil clogging the HLA, But this was a no go. The engine is still making the noise, and I think it is starting to get worse.
The noise only happens when the car is idling at low RPM's. As soon as I rev the engine past 1000-1500 RPM's, the noise stops. The noise is worse when idling in gear, either reverse or drive, however as soon as you accelerate past 1000-1500 RPM, the noise goes away, until you decelerate to low RPM again. I'll try to take a video of it and post a link to it on here tomorrow.
