I noticed today that my cruise control quit working. Car has about 58K miles, the "cruise" light comes on when the button on the end of the switch is pushed in, but the device itself doesn't work.
View 7 RepliesMy steering wheel controls on the lower half quit working last year , then the cruise control quit intermittently last month , then the air bag light starts appearing last week. Deciding this means a failed clock spring / spiral cable , I took apart my spiral cable housing, and found two obvious breaks in the electrical wiring . I first bought a salvage unit on Ebay, to find it arrived bound, didn't turn freely (and no returns from seller). I then bought one from the dealer and installed it last week and very happily have all symptoms fixed!
The replacement was easier than I expected, the steering wheel was not actually very tight, I doubt I needed the steering wheel puller I 'borrowed' from the parts store , could have just loosed the main nut, wiggled and tugged it loose. Just a note be sure to remove 12 volt power from the car, and mark the steering wheel center shaft to the steering wheel for reinstall .
As a rural mail carrier I deliver mail out of my prius with the window down, traveling about 5 hours a day on dusty ,sand roads in Kansas. The car interior gets dusty and this caused the failure of the spiral cable.
Pic's of the old failed unit, the new one comes with some lubricant, white perhaps lithium grease for the ribbons/ wheels, mine had dryed up patches of grease, some I cleaned off the ribbons before the pictures where taken. I'll check the new one in a year, may regrease , cleaning it out to try to prevent this from happening again. I did add some plastic under the airbag to improvise a dust shield for the new spiral cable. Car has 197k bought it with 106k , now has around 60 k from driving on the route.
The cruise on my 06 F-150 just quit working. No light and can't set it .
View 1 RepliesMine just quit on me. Nearly 180K. 2008 Gen 2. I watched that youtube video, they were working on a Corolla. Seems easy enough, it's a pricey part though. It's called an airbag clock spring. I don't think it's the stalk. The button feels the same as it ever did.
View 3 RepliesI was recently on a road trip, using my cruise control extensively (like usual) when it just quit working. I tried to reset to a lower speed, but it would rev itself back up to the original speed. I turned off the cruise control, drove a mile or so and turned it back on. The cruise dash light came on, but the right control buttons no longer worked. No check engine light. It's never worked since.
My local tire shop checked codes and found the tcm not communicating with the mod (cruise module?). I'm looking to take it to the dealer, but I'd like to be better informed with what I may be dealing with before I get there.
In 1970 I bought one of the first Chevrolet Blazers. I drove it until two years ago when it finally was just too worn out to drive, at close to 300K miles. I sold it to someone who is in the process of restoring it for show. I knew that I wanted an other 2 door Blazer, but they quit making them in 1995. After a long search I purchased an original 86K miles on a 2 door 1996 GMC Yukon SLE. I love this car.However, I have just experienced my first mechanical failure. I am a fairly good shade tree mechanic. At 70 years old I have worked on every vehicle I have ever owned. So I am trying to figure out what has gone wrong with the cruise control. On a return trip from our lake house in Kansas (yes, there are lakes in Kansas) to my home in Nebraska, as I was going up and down the rolling prairie hills, the cruise control started having trouble going up the inclines. Then it quit working altogether. I checked the fuses and they are ok. My next thought is the control unit has quit working. I looked for a replacement unit and saw the price.... Is there something else that I could check before I replace the control unit? Is there any way that I can verify the control unit is at fault
View 1 RepliesI have a question on my '00 7.3. Cruise control just quit working. From reading the threads/forums I have gotten some ideas, but how about no dash light when turning the key to on? Nothing with the self test also. How can I troubleshoot the switch in the steering wheel? I could also have a bulb out in the cluster, but either way- no cruise function.

View 3 RepliesMy 04 f150 fx4 has some cruise control issues. The cruise doesn't work at all and the self test doesn't do anything on my truck either. I tested the disengage switch which tested good but replaced it anyway. I've checked all brake lights and replaced the 3rd light which was burned out. I've unplugged the brake switch and reconnected in case of loose connection with no luck. I removed the brake switch and tested as follows.
Top to bottom pins 1-6 for sake of this discussion. Pins 1 and 2 no continuity until brake button is pressed. Pins 3 and 4 are blank so no test performed. Pins 5 and 6 tested the same as 1 and 2 so am I correct in saying the switch is good? My truck will shift through all gears and back without ever applying the brakes. Bad shift interlock inside the shift console? I haven't torn into that yet but it's the only thing left I can think of. Is there any tests to be run on it with a multimeter?
I just bought this truck, a 2004 F150 Lariat, 4x4. It is in great shape, but seems to have a problem with the cruise control... I have been reading different things, but one thing I just discovered is that with the key ON, the brake pedal NOT depressed, I can shift the truck into gear. I know that's not right. So am I needing that switch above the brake pedal and will that fix my cruise control as well?
View 11 RepliesI'm working on a 04 F150 Fx4, cruise control is not working at all, but I can't seem to find the cruise module under the hood. I haven't worked on this year before so I'm not familiar with the layout under the hood. Also, is there a brake pressure sensor on the 04 (new style) like there is on the '03 and below style? there isn't one on my master cylinder, so where would it be? Where to look? Why the cruise wouldn't be working?
View 2 RepliesI have a 2004 Santa Fe GLS that the cruise control just stopped working. It will not turn on when I press the ON button. Could it be a blown fuse? I recently had a new AC compressor installed. Could it be related to that? Maybe something didn't get plugged back in?

When I push the set button the little green light in the dash blinks on then off and the cruise won't set. Any way that I can check to see what it might be myself or am I going to have to pay a dealer to fix it?

View 7 RepliesOver the last couple months when I started driving, I noticed that the cruise control wasn't working at all. The next time I would start it was working again. It "stopped" working a few times.
The last time it stopped working was about a week ago, and hasn't worked since. I have read about horn relay fuses, tail light fuses, some sort of module on the engine. Where should I start?
Cruise control not working all of the sudden - This happened to me, and a web search led to a quick solution, would be the first place to check if you have the problem.
Turns out that if the third brake light (back of the cab) goes out, so does the cruise control. Don't know why. I replaced the bulb, and cruise works. I was fortunate that this super cheap fix worked for me. If your cruise control stops turning on, check that cheap little bulb!
2004 F-350 6.0 4X4 Manual transmission. When I drive on the freeway I can turn on the cruise system w/ the On switch. When I then use the Set button the green dash light comes on but immediately goes off when I release the button. Hold the button, the green light flashes until the button is released.
If I push in the clutch peddle while coasting down a hill and attempt to turn on the CC the light does not come on. Similarly with the brake peddle depressed. Periodically the ABS light comes on and I can tell by the brake peddle feel there is an issue with the ABS.
Additionally, the speedo is not accurate. I have an aftermarket GPS. When driving with traffic in a 65 I am reading about 55. My GPS confirms the speed of 65. The speedo flutters with about a 5 MPH span.
Yes, I have tried the Cruise Control Self diagnosis. It does not work on my truck. Key on w/Off button depressed and nothing.
I have checked for codes w/ Auto Enginuity. C1229 & C1184 both come up.
I have replaced the Vehicle Speed Sensor at the top/front of the rear differential.
I have replaced the Cruise Control Cut out Switch on the master brake cylinder.
Both parts are from Ford parts department.
So... What now?
I recently changed out the power boost canister for the brakes on a 1990 f-150 2wd. It was successful but now i have no cruise control. I double checked my plugs, all good. I checked my brake lights, all good. brake pedal seems fine and completely raised when not in use. i looked for a fuse and can't find it for that system, seems odd. it's not in fuse jct under dash, can't find a fuse jct under hood, seems odd also. No check engine light has lit.
View 3 RepliesI have a 2003 f-250 5.4l and the cruise control quit. If you press the on and coast it will honk the horn so I am thinking switches on the steering wheel or the clockspring. I need to test those. Everything else works fine....
View 6 RepliesVery very odd thing happened. Driving up from Houston to Colorado yesterday. Snow tires mounted in preparation for the snow in NM and CO. Around 300 mi into the trip, the CEL (check engine light) came on. I was on cruise control, I did not notice the lack of power. Checking the battery, it was in the purple. I first opened the gas cap and screwed it back in. I figured the change in elevation or temperature may have had something to do with the CEL. Nothing. Gas tank was a quarter full.
At Lubbock, I pulled over and filled up. I played with the rubber gasket on the gas cap but decided it was going to be more trouble than I was prepared to deal with, without any tools. CEL stayed on for another 30minutes or so while I navigated through the city, covering another 20 miles or so. After a pitstop to pick up OJ, I started the car and the CEL was off.
Here are the variables:
Elevation delta - +3000 ft
Temp delta - -10F
The only thing I can think of is that the hybrid battery is getting long in the tooth (2008 MY, 103k mi), the wind in the high plains chewed through the battery power, and the long length of being in low charge got the ECU to confuse itself into thinking that the hybrid battery has bad cells, which it probably has a few weak cells.
My Prius is a 2009 with 30,000 miles.
Have just begun to have an intermittent problem with the cruise control (has happened twice in past month -- never happened before).
Turn cruise control on, but it will not set. Turning off cruise control and turning it back on didn't solve the problem. However, stopping and turning the vehicle completely off and turning it back on did solve the problem. The second time this occurred (this morning), the engine sounded like it was revving and seemed somewhat sluggish (not what you'd expect if the engine was revving). Not revving real fast, but noticeable.
