Prius (2004-09) :: Coolant Bottle Is Leaked?
Jul 7, 2014
A bit over a week ago, I posted about a major coolant "spew" in my shed.

View 5 RepliesDoing the 48,000 km service yesterday, and when checking everything noticed the engine coolant overflow bottle was almost empty. MAJOR PROBLEM!
There is no sign of leaking, so I presume it evaporated or it was never filled to the full mark from the factory. Man, that level is hard to check. It's dark down there! I may mark the passenger side end of the overflow bottle. Much easier to see the level there.
Coolant loss, presumably from evaporation? This was after 3 years of operation/48,000 km or 30,000 mi.
So I was going to change the oil today and noticed that there was coolant that leaked all over the engine. I don't know where it came but I washed it off (should have snapped a pic!), so today I will try to drive around a bit and pop the hood again to see where it is coming from.
I'm guessing it leaked from one of the hoses or something. I recently got everything changed (timing belt, water pump, new radiator) about 3k miles ago or so.
I took her offroading earlier in the week two days in a row as well and went through some rough terrain in 90+ degree heat.
I recently bought a 2002 prius with 65000 mi. I have been driving it for a few weeks and everything seems to be working good. I noticed there was no engine coolant in the reserve bottle and added a quart to bring it to the full line. The next day I noticed leaking coolant, but it is on the drivers side where I believe only the inverter components are. I really don't know though. The engine coolant level has dropped down. Does the engine coolant flow over on the drivers side? I cant tell exactly where the leak is.
View 1 RepliesOk so I have an 04 Jetta 2.0 and lately it's been overheating on me. The first time it started overheating was because my radiator was cracked and leaked out all my coolant, I swapped the radiator everything was fine for a while. The second time I started overheating, I saw my primary fan was bad it wasn't spinning at all, I swapped it everything was fine for another while. I also changed the coolant temp sensor, it wasn't bad it's just because the coolant flange was leaking coolant, so I changed it a long with the O-Rings and sensor. I also changed the thermostat just incase that was the problem but it wasn't.
I don't think the fans are turning on by them selves when they have too, but either way the car still overheats when I turn on the fans manually with the A/C. I'm not sure if the coolant is circulating, as the car only begins to overheat when I come to a stop and it idles. I have a feeling it's the water pump but I wanna be sure it is before I change it. What it could be? Things that I should check for that usually go out?
I have a 04' RX 330 with 92k. It has small radiator leak. If you are standing in front of the car and look below the fan on the left side of the radiator you can see a small amount of red fluid that has leaked out of the radiator. However, the leak isn't big enough that I ever have to add coolant I just top it off when I get the oil changed. Also it doesn't puddle on the pavement when parked.
The only thing I really notice is that my windows tend fog abit easier now so I assuming the moisture must be making its way into the ventalation somehow. My mechanic said its about a $700 repair. My question should I fix it and is $700 reasonable. Also I've never had the timing belt replaced would it make since do have this done at the same time as the radiator. How long will it take before it becomes a major problem instead of a minor annoyance?
I had to drive my wife to SEATAC this morning. I would normally drive my car (Camry), but my trunk is a mess with muddy tire chains and the back seat is a mess with muddy dog fur, etc.
View 2 RepliesI can see where coolant has leaked out from underneath and come out the sides of the motor beneath the intake gasket.. probably a bad definition but yall probably know what i mean.. i know its a common 3100 motor problem.
View 14 RepliesLast night on a 400 mile trip the wheelwell plastic fell loose onto the wheel and was destroyed. There was some kind of white bottle that attached to it that got ruined also. What it may have been? The car is 200 miles from home and me or i could be more specific.
View 3 RepliesI have a 24v Vr6, a couple days ago i spotted some water on my garage floor. I looked in the engine bay and I saw some coolant on this metal can looking piece, it's on the passenger side of the car to the left of the headlight door and a couple inches down. I also looked all the way at the bottom of the engine bay on on the plastic shield there is quite a bit of coolant that has leaked onto there.
View 2 RepliesBought an 07 ES350 from a reputable dealer in March 2013. Had 65k miles when i got it. Had it about 6 wks and 2400 miles and noticed some reddish leaks under the engine. Thought it was trans fluid. I was driving to the dealership to get it fixed - when i noticed the temp guage up near the red zone and the heater (was 39 degrees F out) was blowing cold air. I started to get in the right lane - when all of the lights on the dash lit up - including the "check engine" light. I was able to get over - i think the car actually stalled.
Anyway - after a tow to the dealer - it was the water pump had leaked out "all" of my coolant. At 67k miles having a water pump fail on a Lexus? Did i do permanent damage to the engine?
My truck has a 6 o powerstroke. I noticed some coolant loss, which I've been monitoring since I had the truck studded 2 years ago. Today I was looking around trying to find a cause of the coolant loss and I noticed some crusty orange residue on a hose that runs under the coolant reservoir. The hose seems to go behind the valve covers along the firewall to the passenger side through a steel line, and then go in a loop back to itself?
I'm guessing it's for the heater core, but I didn't see where it actually goes into the heater core, or anything else for that matter. It is a molded hose that has one of those crimped transitions into the steel line, so I'm not sure if patching it is an option or if I should look at replacing the whole piece. I'm guessing it's going to be expensive. From the fact that it never failed before, I'm thinking it wasn't originally routed with it touching the valve cover and was just something that happened after having the body off during the stud install.
Today, the air conditioning stopped working in my 2003 Elantra. Just stopped blowing cold air. Then the engine thermometer kept on climbing. When I pulled over home, I lifted the hood and heard a lot of bubbling and gurgling sounds, and coolant fluid leaked out underneath the car.
What could be the cause of this? When I let the car stay for a while, the AC did kick back on, but only for a few moments and the thermometer kept on climbing again until I turned the car off. The fan is blowing, I can hear it, but it is obviously not cooling the engine off appropriately.
I have coolant leaking from under my degas bottle. There was a spot on the driveway this morning and upon investigation, I saw a drip hanging from the bottom of the degas. No liquid on top at all. Where this is coming from? Bottom hose?
Also, the boot that connects the tube (right side while looking at front of truck) to the elbow that goes into the intake is leaking oil and making a mess. Whats the best way to fix? Remove boot, clean up, and put back on? Or replace boot? If replace, where can I get that boot?
I set the auto fill at the chevron pump to fill the tank. The autofill never shut off and fuel sprayed everywhere.
Fuel leaked out for 15 minutes from the fill port . I had the pump checked by weights and measures and the pump is not at fault.
Now the fuel gauge is stuck at full.
I have an issue with my 2004 GLS 3.5 L w/ 68000 miles. After the SUV warms up for a few minutes I can hear a whine or rattle on the passenger side. I noticed a little power steering fluid leaked out the top of the reservoir (a few little bubbles in the oil). Then reading on the HMA website it says the filter in the reservoir can get clogged and restrict the flow. I took the reservoir off and flushed it out then replaced with new oil.
Unfortunately this did not fix the issue the noise is still there. It's most prevalent when you turn but the noise also picks up a little when you hit the gas. I have checked for hose leaks but cannot find one. My next step is to have the steering pump changed out. While the mechanics in there I am going to have him check the hoses/pulleys really close and look around for another leaks anywhere. Noise is annoying but the steering works fine.
I just replaced the coolant control valve. I'm hearing alot of coolant movement when I cut the car off now. I am guessing its air in the system. What is the easiest way of getting air out of the system?
View 2 RepliesJust finished a drain and fill on my 2007 Prius; I've done several cycles of bleeding the air out of the system involving: engaging the coolant heat storage tank pump, squeezing the hoses, opening bleeder valve, running the engine for extended periods of time, but the check engine light is still on. My question is will it go off on its own, or do I have to clear/reset a diagnostic trouble code. I read that disconnecting the connector to the coolant heat storage tank (which I did per the repair manual instructions) may cause a check engine light to appear. I also read that having significant air still in the coolant system will also cause the check engine light to appear.
View 4 RepliesMy 2007 has 160k miles and at just over 100k I had toyota change all the fluids. That was about 3 or 4 months ago, it's a taxi. I started noticing the heat was only hot above 83, and sometimes not even hot at high. I thought I was out of fluid so I added to the overflow not wanting to open the cap on a hot motor. It didnt take much, but made the heat come back on above 80 degrees so I did nothing else.
Last night I had no heat again after driving about 200 miles. The heat came back after turning it off for a few minutes, but I stopped at a gas station anyway when I got off the freeway.
The overflow was full. It was also cold. So were the radiator hoses, but not what looked like power steering hoses next to it.
I check that belt pulley was spinning when the engine was running, it was. It a new belt put on by dealer.
The car doesn't show any signs of overheating, and is driven 300 or more miles a day in town and freeway. The motor was of course hot, but not overly so. None of the connected components were hot like I would expect if was overheating.
So, the sideways coolant tank in the engine compartment, not the one next to the grill, but the one that is sort of between the air filter box and that shiny metal square
I have always thought that tank was slightly low, but it has a seam just about where the full line is, so I was never sure....finally about three weeks ago, I worked up my courage and put a few ounces of coolant in that tank. THEN it was up to the full line.
So, a few weeks after adding the coolant, I had the water pump recall done. Now the coolant level is back down to where it was before I added....so I am assuming that the correct level is just below that seam that seals the top of the plastic tank to the bottom part of the tank.
I have a coolant leak that appears on the outside of the transmission. The Toyota dealer tells me it is an O ring between the transmission and the engine, and this part is not individually replaceable. The dealer says there is a lot of rust in the transmission, which is what caused the problem, and they want $1800 to replace the transmission with a used (125K miles) one.
The Prius is a 2004 model with 100K miles on it.
