Prius (2004-09) :: Combination Meter Failure And Loss Of Brakes / Power Steering
Mar 11, 2015
Faulty combination meters on the Toyota Prius. Loss of braking and power steering on the vehicle? This has happened to me 4 of the 100+ times my dash lights were not working. On those 4 occasions I was driving without the dash lights and all of the warning lights came on and the car lost power steering and the ABS braking and I had to use the emergency brake to stop. Fortunately when this has happened I have not been on the highway and there was no snow or it could have been very dangerous.
This issue has only happened when there is a malfunction with the combination meter. I understand this can create many issues within the vehicle including braking difficulties. The response of the Manager at my local Toyota shop said "well, at least you have brakes, you just won't have them in an emergency stop." Wow! I've read accounts of people going 65 mph and losing brakes when this has happened which could be very deadly.
I'm surprised at Toyota's response with this possibly deadly issue. I'm also surprised that the Combination Meter Failure has not be recalled because based off what I have read about 3% of Prius owners have experienced issues with this and the braking system. At what point does a "warranty" become a "recall"? Please note that this issue is separate from the "accelerator recall".

How to remove the combination meter on an '02? Any place to down load the repair manual pages that covers this?

My 2005 Prius with 159,000 miles is a daily driver on a 100 mile round trip commute. Since last year, the Prius only does the commute as I now have a delivery vehicle. The car has been mostly trouble free with the exception of hub/bearing replacements, the left drive axle, and routine maintenance. The combination meter fails intermittently in all temperature ranges and is not limited to only cold weather.
Last week the combination meter failed again as I was leaving to replace a HID headlight in a buddy's 05 Prius. The return trip home was the same. Powered the car off and on three times with no change. The next morning, all was back to normal but the engine warning light remained on. This had never happened in the past.
After a week, I brought it down to get the trouble codes read with the OBD II. Results;
C1300: Malfunction in engine control unit caliper front 1
C1253: Hydroboost pump motor relay malfunction caliper front 3
P0456:Evaporative emission control system pressure leak detected - small leak.
I am replacing the coil springs and struts as the left rear coil has recently broken. The plugs and PCV valve have never been changed. I worry that at this point, the threads may very rusted and difficult to remove.

We have owned our Prius since 2011, with no problems, other than the need to replace the 12 volt battery this past fall. Recently the dashboard display was totally dark. Nothing showed- altho the car would run. But then- it wouldn't stop. We called the local dealer who ran thru several options- and finally the car turned off after holding the power button for several seconds. We took it in- and were told it was the KAAR security system, which should be removed. We had that done.

I have a 2005 Dodge Caravan, modified for use for someone in a wheelchair. On two occasions now I have been driving and have lost ALL power, including all dashboard lights, signals, power steering and power brakes. Luckily both times I was able to pull over without much problem (aside from problems steering and having to mash really hard on the brakes). Turned off the motor, restarted, and everything seemed fine. The first time this happened I took it to my mechanic who said he was unable to duplicate the problem. The second time this happened (yesterday) was after a severe rainstorm. I can't remember what the weather was like the first time it happened.

2008 GS460. 100K miles
I have noticed when I accelerate on a entrance ramp to the highway I notice the RPM meter jerks a little like it's trying to suck for gas or something else. I can feel it in the car too. This is the only time I have noticed this. I have replaced the spark plugs about 5K miles ago.
I did bring it into the dealership a few months ago to get the fuel pump replaced as I noticed a hissing noise under the drivers side read door. They said fuel pumps rarely go bad on the Lexus. The mechanic did some fuel pressure tests and said everything looks good. He also said noise is the return line back to the pump.

2004 VW Toureg Power Steering failure. Searched the threads and came up with nothing. Power steering just quitting? It is as if the pump is not building any pressure. PS fluid was a little low, added fluid to top it of (2 months ago), everything fine. Last week suddenly no power steering. By the way this problem makes it real hard to park.

The 2007 my wife drives has no power assisted steering as of yesterday. This afternoon I drove it around the neighborhood and yup, its like driving a 42 DeSoto.
The red triangle is on the dashboard
NO CEL
NO MFD message - everything is normal
Plugged in my ScanGauge II and there are no DTC codes. Am I correct that this is a failed steering ECU?

The power steering on my 2003 Toyota Prius has been slowly deteriorating (very difficult to get out of parallel parking spaces, for example) until in suddenly cut out all together as I was turning in a parking lot two days ago. I put the car in reverse to try to straighten out, and the problem was immediately solved. The car was fine for the next 12 hours (and ten miles) until the same thing happened again... and fixed itself again.
I realize the 2001 was recalled because of power steering issues... but this does not seem to apply to the 2003.

2004 Silverado...90K miles. That's what I'm feeling. I feel it in the steering wheel as well as in the floor. Mrs. says she doesn't feel it on passenger side.
I haven't been able to pin down any particular speed. I sometimes feel it while accelerating....sometimes only when I take my foot off the gas...sometimes not at all.

What happens when a power inverter fails while driving?

I have an 05 Prius which had no significant problems until the HV battery died this past Feb. Two days later, I'm on the highway and lose power, manage to get the car to an off ramp. Have it towed to a dealer where the power failure pulled up code DTC P3190 and I was told that the car was simply car out of gas. The car was at 3 pips without any indicator going off but after consulting this forum I thought "Okay, maybe this is just the new normal." Filled my car with 5 gallons worth of gas which topped it off (?) and went on my way.
I'll add here for lack of a better place that with the new battery the car has not ever seemed to accelerate cleanly - always feels like there's some resistance on the accelerator when trying to go above 50 on the highway.
Cut to yesterday - I lost power on the highway 3 miles from home with the car at 7 pips (!). I had only put 130 miles on the car since last filling the tank so I can *not* imagine this is a fuel issue. And, worse than ever before, this time when the engine failed I had only about 1000 feet to get over to the shoulder. I did manage to get over safely (for those in SoCal, this was on the 5 North and I narrowly missed blocking the ramps to the 134). To make matters even worse it rush hour in 95+ heat, and I was pinned in my car for 20 minutes (traffic on one side, retaining wall on the other) until the tow truck arrived. I cannot have this happen again.
I had the car towed to the dealer this morning. When the car was picked up the car was at 7 pips in my driveway. The dealer states when the car was dropped of there it was at 1 pip, and sent me a picture of the odometer to verify. Wth?!
How is this possible? How could the gauge have dropped so rapidly? Is there a legitimate way the fuel indicator could have dropped so much or is the dealer scamming me? And what could be be wrong? The AAA driver this morning said they should have replaced the accessory battery when they replaced the hybrid battery, and perhaps that was the source of the problem?

Well I had the dreaded loss of power and EPC/Check Engine light happen on Monday. Was driving down the Interstate and all of sudden we just lost power. It did not go completely dead, but it ran like crap. Called the local VW and they advised to bring it in, still under warranty (27k, 26mths) and it turned out to be the high pressure fuel pump. They replaced the pump and the replacement was bad! Luckily they tested it before they got it out the door back to me. Provided me with a loaner and the dealer had to get a replacement pump overnight. Picked up the car yesterday and everything drives the way it should again.
I had already had the software update, but according to the service advisor that was for the fuel pump in the tank, not the one on the engine. Not sure if that is correct, but that is what the advisor told me..

I just had my 2007 Prius serviced. After the service, my car broke down within 10km of the shop. The shop determined that the air flow meter had malfunctioned and wants to charge me about $500 to replace the part. Could the air flow meter have been damaged when the vehicle was being serviced? Specifically, when the air filter was removed and inspected during the servicing. It seems plausible that shop did something to cause the problem.

Already did the wheel to left, right and center about five times. Still no power steering.

Previous thread (with new subject title) on my 06 Prius losing steering and brakes while driving with multiple errors (red triangle, battery, etc.) while braking on steep down hill section of hwy 17 (mountain road). Took car to dealer but dealer could not find the root cause.

We've got a 2005 with 110K miles on it and recently the Combo Meter malf'd -- in the space of a couple days, the car didn't want to shut off twice, and once at start-up the instrument panel didn't light up. Since then it has run just fine. Took it to the dealer and they want to replace the combo meter. We never got the "Warranty Enhancement" notice (which has, of course, expired).

I recently bought a 2004 Prius with 104,000 miles on it. When I try to go up into the mountains I only get a few miles or up to 1,000 to 2,000 ft. elevation (from 300 ft. starting) and the battery level gradually drops from 6 bars to 1 bar. The red triangle light and check engine light comes on and the car speed gradually begins to drop even if I continue to press on the gas pedal. I have only gotten down to about 35 MPH from 60-65 mph before stopping and turning around. Within a few miles of turning around the light goes off and the battery goes back up to 6 bars and works good going down hill. The dealer I bought the car from has been working with me to figure out the problem but so far we have not figured it out. He has replaced the main battery as well as the inverter/converter. The mechanic was with me on a test drive to the mountains and had his car computer plugged in while we drove and experienced the same thing. It gave the code for the catalytic converter so we changed the entire CC/muffler (one long piece) and still got the same code. The battery indicator on this car has never shown more than 6 bars. I'm not a Prius mechanic but I personally think it has a bad "Gas Engine" or something wrong with the gas engine. How do I tell if the gas engine is bad or has a problem?

My 2008 Prius (111,000 miles) had all the panel alarm lights go on and lost power while I was driving on the freeway. After turning off the vehicle and letting it “rest” for 10 minutes, it restarted with only the red triangle alert light remaining on and was able to drive to my dealer service (about 40 miles) with no incident. The diagnostic code indicates that the inverter has failed, but the technicians are not able to confirm that this is the problem, since the system is now running. I was able to drive it home with no problems or warning lights. As this is a $4,000 part, I would like to know if this is a likely, or even possible, scenario for an inverter failing, or could it be another problem? Note: 3 months ago the auxiliary battery was replaced following the same circumstances.

I have recently noticed that the ODO meter of the car does not work i.e. it is stuck at the reading (57735 km) it was on when I got the car and does not record/show the increase in mileage. the trip A and B are working perfectly fine. I took the car to the local Toyota dealer but he has no clue what is wrong with it, the guy there suggested that ECU is working fine but the ODO meter is damaged and needs replacement.
I am not sure what the guy at the dealership suggested is correct because what i think is that if ODO gets damaged then the whole speedo meter should mal function.
