Prius (2004-09) :: Clock Spring Installed In Steering Wheel - VSC Indicator Light On
Jun 21, 2014
I recently had to put a clock spring inside the steering wheel. I aligned it and calibrated it, however, after this change, the VSC light keeps coming on. I have disconnected the battery, I have used the paperclip on the obd connector and calibrated, but it keeps coming back on after driving a few miles. The car runs great. Along with the VSC light, the vehicle warning light comes on also.

I had the clock spring recall done last week and now when I turn my wheel almost to full lock for a tight turn, it has a little "chirp" when going past a certain point. I'll definitely bring it back to them to correct it, but I'm guessing no quick fix but I can easily remove my airbag and check from there.

We have a 2001 Toyota Camry with 240,000 miles on it. At the last maintenance session, the dealer told us that the funny noise coming from the steering wheel is the "clock spring behind the steering wheel". The dealer would be happy to replace it for us...

2001 F250, 5.4, Replaced the clockspring and now my steering wheel feels very tight. After cornering, it doesn't come back on it's own, like something is rubbing. The face of the clockspring is slightly different than what was there.

I drive a 2000 Grand Voyager with 260,000 miles on it. The airbag light goes on and off and I was told the clock spring is breaking in the steering column. Is there any danger to not having it fixed besides the airbag not going off when it is supposed to, like airbag going off when it is NOT supposed to or function damage to the car or electrical systems. I have mechanics tell me both yes and no. Any thoughts from people here? I'm trying to get as many miles out of it as possible without spending too much on stuff that doesn't need fixed.

Adding cruise control to F350 XL I just bought. I got a steering wheel with the buttons. But I am having problems with the clock spring. Mine has an 8 wire plug with only 6 pins on the big plug and all of the clock springs I have found have only a 6 wire plug for the big one. Without changing my clock spring I have no where to plug in the cruise wiring. All have been for right year model with cruise and even tried different years but none will plug in under the dash.

I have a 97 voyager. recently the airbag light has been coming on then off. now it is on all the time. In addition to the air bag light being on the horn and the steering wheel cruse control does not work. The fuses and relays are all good. I was wondering if the clock spring is the problem?

Ok, I accidentally got a speaker wire wrapped around the steering wheel while I was driving. I turned the wheel and the wire broke. I was able to pull the wire out but now none of the controls work on my steering wheel and the airbag indicator light is on. I watched some vids on YouTube on steering wheel removal and I suspect I may have caused a connector to become separated. Does this sound reasonable? I am a little hesitant to start taking it apart. I don't want to do some serious damage. Does this sound like it will be an expensive repair?

Just installed a new clockspring on a 2009 Prius base model because half the buttons on the steering wheel weren't working and the airbag warning light was lit up all the time. I took a guess on the airbag light being caused by the clockspring since the buttons were dead on the steering wheel and the cruise control was usually dead also. The good news...airbag warning light is off and the buttons and cruise control are all back! Bad news is...now the vsc light comes on after going less than a mile down the road.

I have a 1992 Aerostar Sports edition. My clock spring went bad like 6 months ago. I couldn't find a replacement anywhere. Not even at the Ford. I went to different junkyards and couldn't find the same exact one. Since I wanted to change the steering wheel anyway, i got the steering wheel and the clock spring from a 1999 Ford Explorer Sport at the junkyard. The clock spring fits perfectly and so the steering wheel. My only problem is that clock spring harness is different. I have no problem with the steering wheel side since both the steering wheel and the clock spring came from the same car. But under the dash is a different story. I have the manual for my Aerostar with the wiring schematic for the speed control system (cruise control) and horn but i just can't find the one for the 1999 Explorer. I got one for a 1996 Explorer and have the same wire colors than the clock springs i got from the 1999 Explorer. But i want to make sure I got the right schematic to feel confident I'm doing the job right. I can also use another version for the 1992 Aerostar because mine is a little confusing.
My old clock spring had two harnesses. One for the airbag which I am not going to use (i don't like airbags) and a second one for the cruise control/horn. This harness had four wires. One thick black one that goes to the casing of the ignition switch, and three smaller wires (BK, LB/BK, and Y/LB). The clock spring from the 1999 Explorer has six wires on that harness. One thick black that goes to the ignition switch and five more smaller ones (BK, LB/BK, DG/O, Y/LG, and R/BK). Going by the two schematics i have them figured out (i think), but want to make sure.

Got the new tires the other day (Thursday) from a tire chain store. As I was driving off, I noticed the tire light warning turned on and then moments later, it turned off. I thought maybe it was just that. Today (Saturday) the tire light went on again. Brought the car back to tire store and the service manager checked the pressure, the tires were all low pressure, 29-30 psi instead of 35s. He re-inflated them all but the tire light will not turn off. So next step was he used a scanner tool which he attached close to all the tires.

I have a 97 Toyota Celica. Had a new battery installed and now the radio and clock do not work. Replaced the 15 fuse in the fuse area to the left of the steering wheel - which worked in the past - but this time, nothing. The cigarette lighter works, but no clock or radio.

I have a 1994 Ford Explorer and the cruise control stopped working about a year ago. The horn still works. I changed the fuse but it's still not working. My mechanic checked the cruise control, and was able to determine it was either the clock spring or the control module located above the glove box. He told me it was most likely a bad clock spring, especially considering the number of miles on the truck (385,000). However, in speaking with a Ford dealership parts department, the '94 Ford Explorer does not have a clock spring. So, I'm back to square one.

My T-reg has the winter pkg with the heated steering wheel. Is there some kind of indication light that comes on that lets you know the heat is on , I can't see any indication ,and it seems dumb to not have one . Like having heated seats w/o a indicator light and having to wait till your butt heats up to see if they're on.

My brother installed a CD player in my car a while back and did something wrong. The interior lights don't work anymore, the clock on the dash resets to 1 o'clock when the car is shut off and the driven miles reset every time as well. I have checked all the fuses and they are good. Someone went in and looked at the wires behind the CD player and they didn't see anything wrong. What could cause this issue? (Subaru Outback 2000)

Parked the car, when wife got back in, got the big exclamation point, SRS warning light, brake off light, airbag off light and most weird the single gas bar flashing when, in fact, I had about 3/4 of a tank. The first part of the problem was that when my keys are in the same pocket as my cell phone, there is interference, so I took the keys out, but the same alarms came on. After playing around with it for a while, including locking and unlocking doors with the remote, it finally started, everything normal, including showing gas just fine. I am original owner, so no accidents. I had just put a heavy object in the trunk, maybe it twisted some wiring? I took it out when I got home.

I have a ford f350 2014 that had some water damage, the clockspring suffered water damage so I replaced it along with the steering column module.
The clockspring was brand new from ford, already centered, I pulled out the plastic tab during install.
Cluster has SERVICE ADVANCETRAC error and IDS is shows fault with the steering angle sensor. (see picture)
Do these new sensors have to be reset and calibrated to work, or does this FAULT message on IDS indicate a wiring problem?

I got this exact warning Monday which is discussed in this thread (linked below) and its problem was a bad inverter water pump while mine seems fine: . Also in the linked thread another whom had gotten the exact warning, but inverter pump was not the problem, believed it meant the Hybrid battery was bad and replaced it. , but mine, at least for now, as discussed below, seems fine.
was about to make a trip, 140 miles, gassed up and when leaving station all these (quoted below) warning lights came on. and the car should have been operating in cold condition still as gas station was only a few miles from home. :
Master Warning Light, Malfunction Indicator, VSC, (!), and Hybrid System Warning on Screen.
