I've noticed that when I'm stopped, or in park, and I push on the brake pedal hard I hear a squeak or chirp that sounds like it's coming from the wheels. It might even sound like someone is honking at you as if you were not going when the light turned green. I have not been outside the car when this occurs, so I don't know exactly where the sound is coming from.
View 11 RepliesIs it normal for the Prius's brakes to make a low-pitched squeak (kind of like something wet rubbing against something, or a burp), when I press it semi-deeply and release? The only reason I'm worrying is that I ran over a camouflaged flat metal object on the road today while changing lanes, and it could've weighed anywhere from a soda can to a heavy shovel -- it clunked against the bottom of my car loudly, then got propelled into the air and barely missed a car behind me. It seems trivial but I'm paranoid because I just got the car (used, great condition) and that happened on my first day. I don't remember if it was squeaking before the shovel incident. My girlfriend says her 3rd gen prius does it too but I have yet to verify it.
View 5 RepliesEvery single time it rains, our 2005 Prius' brakes tend to go haywire-and just when we need them the most. They back breaks lock up, bringing the car to a jolt and throwing us forward. Sometimes it feels like it won't brake and then bam, a very hard stop. Sometimes they squeak and grind too- It never happens when it is sunny outside-only where there is a significant amount of moisture in the air. We've taken the car to the dealer three times and they can never find anything wrong with it.
View 3 RepliesSo last night I washed the R, pulled it out of the garage to squeegee the floor, and brought it back in. Then I heard this weird squeak chirp sound... tracked it to of all places, the engine compartment of my R! Thought I had a mouse in there.. didn't find anything.
So tonight I took the wife out for supper. Got home, parked the R, same sound, but only faster! Here's a video of the sound, sounds like it's coming from the engine bay for sure. Weird, right? I did some googling and didn't find anything else. Seems like it must slow down when it's colder. Because last night it was once every 30 seconds or so.
So my mk6 developed what initially sounded initially like a bad serpentine belt tensioner. Only under anything more than load, and sounded like a bird chattering under the hood. Got outside today, fired car up, watched tensioner and it sat there steady as a rail. The noise is coming from the opposite side of the engine. Not really mechanical/metallic at all and tracks under load with the RPMs. Why i initially thought what i did. Not I'm sort of baffled.

Car only has 22k miles on it so this is way too early for any noises to be coming up. I've spoken to a few friends and they think it might be the bushings or my suspension was installed incorrectly. What it may be?
View 20 RepliesOdd problem has arisen in my wife's Passat. It's a sort of "chirp" or squeak that seems to be coming from underneath the passenger side dash. It only makes the noise while moving (whether it's 1mph or 100mph) but it's still intermittent and doesn't seem to happen under and exact driving conditions (happens most frequently when turning at low speeds, but can also happen rolling straight down the highway).
My first though would be the blower motor, sometimes it happens with the A/C off. I took it to the shop a few weeks ago and of course it stopped making the noise on the way there and it started back up on the way back. So now it's in the shop again.. Anyway, I managed to catch it on video [URL] ....

It has this annoying, faint squeek whenever i hit bumps in the road. Sort of sounds like bird chirps. I cannot reproduce it if I bounce on it while parked.
One rainy day I tried to show a friend and it would not make the sound it seemed. Therefore I think its exterior, although it almost sounds inside.
Today I sprayed down all the rubber joints under the front end with silicone spray. It still squeaked while driving afterwards.
I should note that a ford dealer claimed the ball joints were worn and needed to be replaced. Although, would a ball joint make bird chirp type squeaks while driving at most speeds (20mph - highway speeds)? It does not intensify or change at any particular speed.
My understanding is that a bad ball joint would grind when turning the wheel or clunk while traveling over speed bumps or something similar.
There's a small but clearly audible chirping/squeak coming from my truck whenever I pull out. It goes away after the truck gets hot, but for the first 10 minutes or so, it squeaks only when moving. Not at idle. It is worse at low RPM's in 1st gear. And it's particularly bad in the mornings. I was thinking it is something in the idler pulley or the belt tensioner.

2011 Ford F350, 69K miles... Just started, at about 30mph. I am hearing a Chirp from the front, speeds up when I speed up and goes away with brakes or slow below 30.
Friend thinks its the brake warning telling me its time for new. Bugging me. Just started. Never changed brakes.
I have a 2000 mountaineer 5.0 that has a chirp/squeak when its cold and goes away once warmed up good occasionally. I have replaced the belt, alternator and manually spun all the idler pullies, water pump, ac and tensioner. Nothing squeaks. Is it possible for the harmonic balancer to make this noise?
View 14 RepliesI have Toyota Prius 2006 with about 58k miles. For the last 12-16 months I encounter the following problem: when I press brakes, I hear knocking noise. It doesn't happen every time, but when it does it only happens when I press the brakes. Once I brought my car to a Toyota dealer and waited for an hour until my car was taken for a service. Mechanic found no noise. I tried to produce this noise but my car didn't want to cooperate. I don't see any messages on a display screen. It happens with power on/off and pressed brakes. What the knock is and how to get rid of it?
View 2 RepliesI purchased a 2001 Prius with 123K miles about two weeks ago. I knew the HV battery was shot when i purchased it. I decided to see if I could rebuild the HV battery on my own.
I'm very mechanical but not the brightest bulb in the room when it comes to batteries and anything electrical.
So here is where I'm at so far:
- I removed the HV battery.
- safely rested it on 2 horses (I used horses because it would give me easy access to the bottom to remove the bottom screws)
- Removed all 38 modules from the battery pack
- cleaned the busses in vinegar
- inspected each wire that connects between buss and the nut.
- tested each battery ( one of the batteries tested at -0.1, the others tested at 6.8)
- I don't know how to load test the modules, so I couldn't tell if they would drop dramatically under load, so I ordered 38 used replacement batteries off of Ebay. (Gen II)
- these replacement modules were about a half inch longer than my original modules.
- The replacement modules arrived. I cleaned the terminals, tested each one and installed them.
- Connected the battery back into the prius.
- Installed new 12V battery from the Toyota dealer.
- The Prius started right up.
- Drove it around for the first time for about 10 minutes.
- When i was driving it, the monitor in the Prius would show the engine running most of the time but sometimes it would show it charging the HV and other times charging the 12V. the engine would shut off at stop lights and resume when I pressed on the gas pedal.
- while driving back into my driveway, all of the warning lights came on and the battery fan kicked into high gear,
- I can't remember the code I pulled but it was in reference to the cells being out of balance I think. I'll have to check it again tonight when I get home.
- I removed the HV and tightened the nuts around the busses hoping the issue would be resolved.
- I was able to drive it only a few minutes before the issue returned.
other issues I noticed.
While waiting for the replacement batteries to arrive, I did the following:
- changed the cabin filter
- did an oil change.
- changed the tranny fluid and removed the tranny pan to clean out the slime and clean off the magnet.)
- changed the rear brake shoes.
- changed the front brake rotors and pads. ( they were in awful condition due to sitting so long)
***when I pressed on the brakes, only the rear brakes seem to engage, not the front. I never attempted to bleed them because I know only the dealer can do that)
My 2010 with 110k is now making a single yet audible "click" sound when I accelerate off of the line. It makes the same exact sound each time I press the brake pedal at speed. Just one click, not a continuous clicking. What's wrong??
View 5 RepliesToday was the second time I have walked into the garage and heard my Prius making a weird noise. It's not the noise that comes from the front when you open the door or press the brakes....It's coming from the rear of the car. It stops when I press the start button. I made a video of the noise (nothing to see, as it was dark in the garage, but you can hear the noise.
My concern is that it's something running that will wear down my battery if I happen to not notice it is doing it sometime in the future.
About a week after I picked up my "vee" one of the passenger side brakes started to squeak when I would leave the house only after sitting for a while. Is this normal it only seems to be happening on the passenger side. I am thinking it might just be some condensation on the rotor or something but its definitely only coming from one wheel and goes away after driving about a block.
I am planning on having the dealer look at it as there is already a seat squeak / groan. I know where its coming from but I will leave the dealer to fix it.
Today was a very warm day... I pressed on the air conditioner button.. On the screen it looks like everything is ok.. But actually nothing happens.. The air conditioner is not turning on at all.. What can i do?
View 7 RepliesIts a 2005 model with 45000 miles on the clock, so low mileage for the year. The problem with it is the engine starts up ready fr a journey, and as soon as the accelerator pedal is pressed, the engine cuts out.
View 7 RepliesTwo weeks ago I took my 2004 Prius (with about 165,000 miles on it) to the dealership because of problems with the rear (drum) brakes grabbing (sometimes hard enough to lockup one of the wheels). Their diagnosis was that they were badly out of adjustment. They "cleaned, adjusted and beveled rear brakes" which fixed the problem, but it returned this morning. I should also mention this dealership had "cleaned and adjusted" the rear brakes twice before over the last couple of years.
View 1 RepliesI have a gen2 2007 prius (right hand drive). Problem I am having is [INTERMITTENT]when pressing the ignition button to turn off the car. When I press the button the system completely shuts down instantly and rather roughly and nothing is active (the Key is still in). I then remove the key and the system starts up! I then press the button to stop the system, put the key back in and restart it. It then works fine - until the next time. Clock resets itself as does the climate controls. Not sure what to make of this. I have just recently replaced the 12v battery in the boot.
PS. Forgot to mention that when the system goes dead, if I fold down back seat and thump the floor panel above the battery under the seat the system goes on?? Any clues. Will take it to mechanic as soon as he gets back from holiday!
