View 13 RepliesI have an '05 Prius. I always turn off my AC before powering the car off. I used a sunshade. I don't turn on the AC for about a minute after starting the car and and/or getting up to normal speed. (about 35-40).
The AC will power on more reliably if on MAX. It will start to blow cold and stay on for about 45 seconds. Then, it starts to fade out and turns all the way off. If I allow it to wind all the way down, I can't turn it back on for about 10 minutes or longer. If I turn it off manually when it first starts to fade, the AC will allow me to turn it back on and get more cold air. (The problem is, I'd have to turn the AC on and off every 20 seconds or so to maintain cold air, and I'm not sure that's good for the car or battery...but I've done it before on my way to a wedding...didn't wanna be soaking wet for photos...and the air blew cold the entire 20 minute ride.)
The Prius engine turns on/off automatically, so miles driven do not correlate to "Engine" miles. Thus, it makes sense to me that somewhere there should be access to "Engine hours". My diesel truck even offers this feature. Does this data is recorded and available??
View 6 RepliesI have one 2004 Hyundai Elantra. It was parked outside for almost a year without being used. I recently installed a new battery and had the front brakes/rotors replaced - they were rusted on so tight the guy had to partly saw them off. So now that I have set the scene, why this car turns off in sharp turns. Luckily this only happened twice as i was driving slowly and turning into my driveway. I can turn the ignition and it goes right back on.
View 3 RepliesI still have my 2004 Prius which currently has 264,xxx miles. The car runs very well (at least I think it does). I have always maintained it beyond what was required. Anyway, it has been very, very hot lately in south Florida (high 90's plus 50% humidity) so I do not know if that has anything to do with my problem. I have noticed that after I have driven the car for a while the engine periodically turns itself on when I am at a stoplight even though the battery shows practically full (full blue). The engine will continue to stay on until I resume driving. I have the AC on full blast as it is needed to keep the cabin cool. Otherwise, the car seems to be performing satisfactorily.
View 7 RepliesWe are considering getting rid of one of our Priuses for a mini S. There are a few problems with our prius that need some attention. Which is why we are pretty much just gonna unload it and get a mini. however we have a question about a noise that you can hear from the steering area when going up our driveway for example, or going around a turn out of a driveway. its a cracking/creaking noise that sounds nothing but unpleasant. Turns out the guy who we are looking at the mini from knows some about these priuses and hondas etc. and he was saying that priuses have an electronic steering component whereas minis, hondas, etc. are not electronic. He said this elderly lady had the same problem with her prius and steering creaking noises down the road from him.
View 3 RepliesWhen my AC turns on or changes speed - a humming sound occurs. It only lasts for about 1 - 2 seconds.
Is this normal
It sounds similar (higher pitched, but not as loud) to the humming you hear when you turn the vehicle off.
I'm new to the 2G and noticed a wheel shudder or jump when turning a tight circle in low temps? I'll try to list out all the info I can:
The shudder was exactly like a 4x4 vehicle in low range/diff-lock when turning on dry pavement.
Going straight or slight turns only, nothing noticeable. ( I was paying attention)
200k miles, just bought the car and haven't changed the WS atf yet.
Temps in the -25°C/-10°F range ....
I have a weird problem with my 2006 with HID headlights and 78k miles. When I turn on the headlights, the reverse camera turns on & so do the back-up white lights. I can clear the reverse camera by pushing any button, but the back-up lights are a big problem. No codes are being seen via ODB, everything else works great, and no fuses appear to be blown.
View 15 RepliesRelatively new Prius owner. I have a 2007 Touring model. I have two concerns I'm hoping some veterans can address for me.
1. I noticed last night that my left HID headlight turns off randomly (I saw it in the reflection of the car in front of me). I turned off the lights and turned them back on, and the headlight was working again for about 5 minutes before turning off again. This consistently happens so I'm pretty much driving with only one headlight on. The right headlight isn't having this problem, luckily.
Looks like Toyota had a settlement over the issue. I would post a link but since I'm a new users it's not allowing it.
Yellow brake light turned on while driving in rain, then for some reason turned off. I had read somewhere this may be an indicator of wear on brake pads. I have a 90 mi. commute round trip, I will check again if this turns on and stays on. For now, it is off. what could be causing this?
View 1 RepliesI have a 2006 Expedition with 90k miles. I am the original owner. don't drive the vehicle much just mostly when the family goes somewhere or when I'm putting the Jet skis in the lake.
About a year ago the air con went out and since I don't drive it that much I decided to fix it later, well now is later. How to diagnose the AC system. what I am looking for is a methodical step by step procedure for trying to find out what is causing my AC to not work.
the symptoms are, the compressor turns on runs for a few seconds and then turns off. inside the cab I can hear hear a hiss noise during the few seconds that the compressor comes on and fades away slowly when the compressor shuts off.
I bought a can of 134a with the gauge, I adjusted the gauge for the correct ambient temperature hooked up to the low side and was surprised to see that the Freon was only a little low. I topped it off but still no change in the compressor running.
I bought a set of manifold gauges from Harbor Freight (I know I know you get what you pay for) in any case I hooked up the gauges to see what the pressures are when the compressor turns on but only seeing a little change.
Any way I took my Speedy (expedition) to the local auto air conditioner shop the mechanic hooked his gauge set up to the vehicle, watched it for a few minutes, made some phone calls, came back. He did tell me that he was going to have to replace the compressor, condenser, dryer, expansion valves both front and back and flush the rest of the parts that did not get replaced. I suppose this is a good price if all that work really needs to be done???
However I would like to exhaust all of my options before I dump half the vehicles blue book value into the air conditioning. so I've been searching the internet and found that it is possible the problem may reside in a control valve that may be present in the type of scroll compressor that is in the expedition.
Ok, this has happened to me and my wife while driving. During braking, once in a while the engine will shut off for a split second then turn right back on without me doing anything. We only have 1 other key on the key ring with the ignition key. Also the inside lights (dashboard/radio) flicker once in a while. The alternator is charging 14 volts, the battery checks out. When it shut off while my wife was driving she noticed the instrument panel lights came on for a second (like when you start the car {abs-check engine- temp- all the warning lights}) and the instruments bounced all the way up then down (also like when you first start the car)...
View 12 RepliesI have a 2004 kia rio. I just replaced the alternator and got a brand new battery for two days the car ran great besides my stereo not working or over head lights. Then when I was driving home from work i noticed the interior lights started to dim, the check engine light came on, the passenger sea belt light came on and then boom the car just turned right off. I waited a few minutes and tried to restart it and got nothing. I got a jump that lasted a few minutes but the car died again. I've had the battery retested and they say the battery is good. what could be the reason for this happening?
View 4 Replieswhat turns on the back up camera,, the computer, the back up light relay or the transmission selector?
View 1 RepliesJust hooked up my SGII to my new Prius, and it won't stay on. It seems that every time the ICE turns off and the RPM's go to zero, it thinks I'm parking and it powers down after the 10 seconds or so. I know this is what it's doing because if the ICE stays on, the SGII stays on just like it used to in my RAV4.

View 5 RepliesSo today I hop in my car to run a few quick errands. 2004 V8 4.2ltr. Turns over but does not start. Sounds odd as well. Call a buddy he comes over and plugs in his laptop, the only codes were maf and fuel rail. He turns it over and says, "sounds like no compression" we pull the left cam cover and sure enough the timing belt is loose. The tensioner appears to have failed. I am going to pull the front end off and replace the belt and tensioner.
View 1 RepliesI was driving along the highway and started losing power and within a few minutes I pulled over and and would not start. It turns over strong but never fires up. I recently had a Coil over plug replaced. I am thinking fuel filter or ignition coil hoping it is not a fuel pump.
2004 4-Motion, 1.8 turbo, Tiptronic Trans.
It seems like the fan that cools the hybrid battery pack turns on quite often, almost everyday after two or three hours of driving. I heard it once or twice on my '05, but on this one I hear it pretty much everyday.
View 19 RepliesNo audible sound but a definite jerk. I will be cruising along at 40, the car running in EV mode, and then the engine turns on & the car momentarily "nudges" backwards (change in acceleration) before resuming its normal smooth operation.
