Prius (2004-09) :: AC Compressor Noise When Braking

Nov 5, 2015

Quick back story, bought the car a year ago, seller told me it was in an accident and the radiator was replaced. He let me know that the discharge AC hose was missing and that the other hose was disconnected. I also noticed that the low pressure cap is missing. I recently ordered and installed the discharge hose with the intention of filling the system later.

I have always noticed a noise/vibration coming from the passenger side when braking at low speeds. I havent noticed at higher speeds but maybe there is more road noise. The best I can describe the noise is that is sounds like a compressor running. I have a hunch it's the AC compressor and might be related to the regenerative braking, but I am no expert.

Prius (2004-09) :: Grinding Noise When Braking At Low Speed

Bought my Prius (2005, with 160K miles) about a month ago and since I've had it I am hearing a metal on metal grinding noise when braking at low speed. How loud the sound is depends on how hard I am on pushing on the brakes. One of my co-workers has the same model and said that his does not make that sound. Not sure if its just because it has after-market brake pads or something? This noise only occurs when braking at low speeds (below 10 MPH) so I assume its an issue with the front brakes.

Is this something I need to get looked at by the dealership? I had a local mechanic that worked on my old Honda beater take a look and he said that the rotors and brake pads looked new and wasn't sure why they'd make noise.

Prius (2004-09) :: 2006 - Popping Noise When Braking

I have an 06 Prius that I have had for about a year or more now. When I bought it, it needed a transaxle. I replaced that and have been driving it since. I have this problem that seems to be getting worse. When I push the brakes the car will make a popping noise, and it seems to be getting more frequent. I do not get any noticeable noises when turning or just driving normally.

The noise is quite noticeable, when I am in a parking lot and hit the brakes next to someone, people will give me the look like "what's wrong with your car". I am not positive where this noise is coming from, but my best guess is that it is coming from the right side. The popping seems like something is bound up and then releasing. I can also replicate the noise some times when I initially accelerate. My best guess is that it is being caused from the engine/trans weight shifting, but I am not sure a motor mount can make the popping noise I am getting.

Prius (2004-09) :: 2007 - Grinding Noise When Braking

So my dealer diagnosed my 2007 Prius with a transaxle issue, but what bothers me is that it doesn't make the sound all the time. When I brake lightly, there is no sound and when I brake heavily there isn't either. It is only when I do a medium brake above 7 mph of course and around 20's mph range. I am hoping for something besides the transaxle...maybe a wheel bearing...anything.

Prius (2004-09) :: Grinding Noise On Radio While Braking / Accelerate

I may be worrying over nothing but lately when I brake or accelerate I hear a grinding noise on my radio. I listen to AM. With my other vehicle it usually meant there was a problem somewhere.

Prius (2004-09) :: Inverter Generator Grinding Noise When Braking Above 7 Mph?

My car was making a weird grinding noise when braking above 7mph. I did the neutral brake thing and seems to go away sometimes. The dealership said it needed new rotors and brakes, so I went ahead and did that with them, then called me to let me know the sound did not go away. Now they are stating my grinding noise is coming from the "inverter generator" which is what they said was the transmission. I am just curious why this goes away sometimes and if it's related to my previous issues with the car.

Prius (2004-09) :: Odd Noise In Driver Side Door During Acceleration / Braking

2004 Prius.... About a year ago I heard a noise in the driver's side door. It sounded basically like something was scratching against the plastic, but I'd only hear the noise during acceleration/braking, for maybe a half of a second. That was for about a week, but then it went away and I didn't think about it anymore.

Then, a little while ago, I was in an accident where a pedestrian ran into the road in front of me. He hit the driver's side, and there was some damage. Bumper, hood, front light replaced. Suddenly, I'm hearing the noise again, and it's not going away.

Really, what it sounds like to me is as if some piece of something is loose inside the door and moving back and forth whenever I accelerate or break.

Prius (2004-09) :: Squeaking Noise Happen Under Slightly Heavy Braking

Non mechanical squeaking noise coming from rear passenger side cabin area. Only appears to happen under 75 percent or so acceleration and slightly heavy braking. Sounds like an electrical squeal intermittent under the above conditions.

Prius (2004-09) :: 2008 - Braking System Makes Slight Grinding Noise While Getting Below Around 10 Mph?

Just purchased a used 2008 prius with 80,000 miles on it. Braking system makes slight grinding noises when getting below around 10mph. I know the brakes are different, so I'm not sure if this is normal or if it means my brake pads need replacing? Car didn't come with an owners manual .

Prius C :: Noise From Air Conditioner Compressor

Just put my car in for it's first year's service(20,000 km). I made an observation to the service tech that during warm weather, there is a noticeable rattling whirring sound.

During testing, they were able to compare my car with another and confirmed the noise to be from the air-con compressor.

Prius C :: 2013 - Loud AC Compressor Noise

I purchased a used 2013 Prius C last fall (currently its ticking 33000 miles). That time the weather was cold and did not need the A/C that much. As the summer progresses, I am hearing a loud noise coming out from the engine bay as I turn on the A/C. Here is an YouTube link for the noise.....

Prius (2010-12) :: Air Conditioner Compressor Noise

I have a 2013 Prius with few miles. It seems like the air conditioner compressor makes a very loud humming noise. It's a little annoying inside, but outside it is really loud. I know it is running off an electric motor and I expect that to make some noise, but this seems excessive. Is this normal? Also, the compressor keeps running all the time. I thought they were supposed to cycle on and off. It seems like all air conditioning compressors do this to conserve energy, even a house air conditioning unit.

Prius (Gen 3) :: Loud Electrical Noise From AC Compressor When Warming Up Outside

Just got a new 2010 Prius III with 78,000 miles. I recently have had the car out when its been warming up outside and I noticed that when the AC is on every now and then it will make (in my opinion) a very loud electrical noise. I took it to the Toyota dealership and they said that the noise is normal (I even showed the person that checked my car in this exact video) however I question if they really heard the noise I was complaining about because it doesn't always do it (which is another reason I wonder if it isn't normal). Keep in mind my phone is close to the source of the noise so with the hood closed its not as loud but its still VERY noticeable.

Prius (2004-09) :: Compressor Went Out Because Of Putting In The Wrong Oil

I have a 2008 Prius. In 2009, I got into a collision, and the car required extensive body work. This week, I took my car to the mechanic to repair the air conditioning system - only warm air was blowing out. According to my mechanic, the compressor went out because the auto body shop put in the wrong oil in the air conditioning system and re-installed the fans backwards. I got my car back today, and the air conditioning works really great!

However, my family spoke to their mechanic (different person from my mechanic), and he indicated that used compressors are dangerous due to the high likelihood that contaminants will be leaked. This sounds completely ludicrous to me. My mechanic said that the other mechanic's concerns are unfounded.

Prius (2004-09) :: AC Can't Take The Heat / Compressor Conks Out

The AC on my 2002 Prius works fine, as long as it's cool outside and I'm running it on low. As soon as I stress the system -- either it's above 75 degrees outside, or I'm running it on maximum, or driving on the highway for more than 30 minutes -- the compressor conks out. Fan's still blowing, but no cold air. The light on the a/c button starts flashing. If I turn it off for a few seconds, the cold air comes on again, but usually only for a few minutes, and then we repeat the cycle. The Toyota mechanics claimed they couldn't replicate the problem, but I bet if I forced them to ride with me up and down the highway on a 90-degree day with the windows up and no a/c, they'd believe me.

Prius (2004-09) :: AC Compressor And Condenser Cooling Fan Will Not Come On

I have an 05 Prius with 53k miles and the ac just recently stopped working. The blower fan still comes on, but neither the compressor nor condenser cooling fan will come on. I've checked the fuses and relays, and they check out ok. I'm hoping there may be one I missed? It just stopped working with no warning signs. What could be causing this? If the compressor was bad, the condenser fan would still work, right? I'm fearing it's the ac inverter. Do the symptoms match?

Prius (2004-09) :: 2005 - How To Install A/C Compressor

My wife and I have had a 2005 Prius for a little over a year now. When we bought it, the previous owner said the A/C system was new. Once the spring/summer hit, we realised that wasn't true- apparently the blower motor was replaced, but the compressor was bad (dealer confirmed). We just lived with it last summer, but I am wanting to replace it now before it warms up.

I am home mechanic- no professional, but I have done everything from engine rebuilds to engine swaps at my house before. There are very few jobs that my cars have needed that I haven't done myself. The Prius is one thing I haven't done much to, and am not completely familiar with. I looked at a diagram, and the compressor seems easy to access from below the car. I have ordered a service manual for the Prius, and will use that.

Prius (2004-09) :: 2006 - Air Conditioning Compressor Broke

I just found out that the air conditioning compressor is broke in my 2006 prius and its going to cost $1800 to fix it.. I am not in the loop here but that seems ridiculously high. I mean i save money at the pump but all that money just went out the door if i get this repaired. I am really contemplating trading the car in rather than deal with that expense..

Prius (2004-09) :: Disable A/C Compressor When Front Defrost Is On

a while back I had found and bookmarked a page here with info on how the dealer could program the A/C compressor to not be forced on when the front windshield defrost is on; but the page is now missing.

I want to disable the compressor being on during defog because it causes the air to be extremely dry and causes severe problems with my asthma; and as soon as I turn it off or switch to normal foot/front vents, all the water that had condensed on the A/C coil then spews out and fogs up the entire car badly. It's a vicious cycle that is dangerous.

Prius (2004-09) :: 2005 - AC Malfunction / Possible Blockage Or Really The Compressor?

It's one of those days again when the temps are starting to get hot here in Austin, Tx. My AC started acting up during the Spring and first started working fine then after about 10-15 minutes of driving the air starts to blow warmer. The air doesn't go back to cold unless the car has been parked and off for several hours or overnight, and even after that it only blows cold for 10-15 mins again.

Well, I didn't have the time/money to mess with it. The recent May it stopped cooling completely. I recently took it to a local shop and we look at it together. Drained the system and the mechanic was saying it's pulling some air and a little refrigerant. Well, we recharged the system and we could only put in 0.5 lbs and the Low side just maxes out. The system is supposed to hold 1.06 lbs so we were left scratching our heads.

Decided to check for leaks, discharged the system again and hooked up a vacuum pump and see if the gauges will go below 0 for negative pressure and they never did. So the shop doesn't think my system has a leak. They could have used a dye to check but didn't have any on the shelf at that moment.

I also have a DTC code of B1476 and we followed the shop manual. Fans blow into the engine and sometimes we had the bubble but couldn't add more refrigerant due to the Low side being maxed.

My father thinks I most likely have a blockage somewhere in the system. If so, how I can check for this? Is there a specific place or two I can look to find out the system is blocked?

Some people on the form seem to have AC problems, including some with the B1476, and others that couldn't find the problem very well. I'm worried that replacing the compressor wouldn't solve the problem, especially if there is a blockage or something. I usually do a lot of mechanic work but I've never actually worked on an AC system before. I would love to dive into this, even if I can only do part of it and then send it to the Toyota dealer for a flush and charge.
