Prius (2004-09) :: 2008 - Strange Noise From Time To Time Randomly

My prius 2008 94k miles makes this strange noise from time to time, randomly. What it might be?

View 11 RepliesHaving problems with the auto-up feature on your windows? Mine seems to randomly stop working from time to time. Only the drivers side has the problem. When the truck was new the dealer re-programmed the computer and put a new window switch in. That worked for a while but the problem keeps coming back. I can easily do the re-programming sequence however the problem always comes back. I have a 2012 Lariat SCREW.
View 13 RepliesDriving last night, I heard this horrible scraping sound from time to time, but I couldn't stop right away. When I got home, I saw that the bottom cover (or whatever the proper name for it is) had come loose at the left front -- I assume from hitting the ground once too often (damn this low clearance). I took a pic, but it's not too clear. The front edge is frayed a bit.
View 3 RepliesOn my MPG display if I push the steering wheel button once, I see actual MPG and the numbers jump all over the place depending on how I am driving. Push the button a 2nd time I see avg mpg, push it a third time and I see range how many more miles I can go.
If I push the button a 4th time I see "- - -?".
Read everything I could and couldn't find a problem/solution similar to mine:
- Replaced broken (in three pieces) actuator on driver's side. Also replaced hub assembly (bearings went bad). Afterward started getting the grinding noise all the time in 2wd that goes away in 4HI.
- Replaced the entire hose assembly since I was not getting vacuum at driver side end hose. Still wasn't getting vacuum, turns out passenger side actuator diaphram was completely torn up as well (checked vacuum with hose on passenger actuator, not removing and plugging like I should have), so replaced the passenger side actuator too.
- Driver side grinding noise went away completely, now getting grinding noise on passenger side ONLY WHEN PRESSING ACCELERATOR. Take foot off accelerator and coast down road/highway noise goes away. Noise also goes away when putting truck in 4HI.
My latest actions: I've checked vacuum at both ends of hose while someone in park throttles truck up to 3k rpm, vacuum doesn't appear to change at either hose end while opposite side is attached to its actuator. Replaced passenger side actuator again thinking the first was defective, no change in grinding noise. Greased ring on wheel hub where actuator attaches thinking I was getting a leak at the actuator/hub seal, no change. Still only a grinding noise when accelerating, not while coasting with truck running.
The perplexing part: If it is a vacuum issue, how is it I am getting good enough vacuum from the driver side but not from the passenger side, since the driver side hose connection is downstream from the passenger side? Also, how am I not seeing the vacuum drop when checking at the hose end of either side while someone throttles truck up in rpms?
My thoughts: Definitely a vacuum leak somewhere in the system, minor enough to not notice right away on gauge, thinking to check the vacuum box and check valves next. Also thinking the passenger side hose from solenoid has a small leak causing the issue on the passenger side and not the driver side anymore, so thinking of putting the old hose back in to see if there is any change (I had replaced the hose prior to knowing the passenger actuator was torn up so I am not sure if the hose is really bad).
3-piece actuator I described above in picture for reference. Honestly I was not surprised, this has been my luck with this truck.
My 2008 is 4 years old now but only has 27k miles. (I'm retired.) However I am really disgusted that it has had so many serious problems. Most recently, the trunk will not open all the way. I noticed this before it went out of warranty but I assumed it just needed some WD-40. In fact I remember another poster on this forum actually making fun of another owner who complained about the trunk not opening all the way. Well, now the dealer tells me I need a whole new trunk support system for $388! I'll just live with it as long as I can stand it.
Additionally, the doors often don't lock when I push the thumb lock on the outside of the door. I've tried both doors and the trunk. Of course the dealer couldn't find anything wrong. I know I could try the key fob but I keep it zipped up inside a pocket inside my pocketbook and never fool with it - a feature I do love about the Prius. Having problem with the trunk not opening all the way?
My 2008 Prius battery stays blue all the time and my MPG went 43 from 51MPG. Two days ago I drove almost 600 miles but battery sign didn't go to green. I dont know if is there any problem with my car? NO CIL.
View 17 RepliesI'm a proud owner of a 2005 prius which until recently ran flawlessly. For the past 2 mos, one of both of the headlights randomly turn off at nighttime. If I turn the knob off, then back on, they both work.
View 7 RepliesThe headlight beam height can be adjusted from inside the car. But even when not fiddling with the dial, I hear an electric motor sounding noise from them time to time, just a short <1s whirring sound. I listen with the bonnet open and I'm pretty sure it's coming from the headlights. Is this normal? is there any way I can stop it?
View 3 RepliesAbout four days ago my TPMS warning light started blinking. Same tires and sensors have been on there for quite some time. The service book says to take it to the dealer, but I instead stopped by Discount Tire (where I purchased the tires) to see if they could look and figure out which sensor was acting up.
When he ran his sensor, none of my four sensors showed up as broadcasting at all! Now I know that all four of my sensors did not just randomly go out at the same time.
Will it drain the battery to leave the rear hatch open for extended time? i.e. for tailgating or camping (2008 Prius)
View 6 RepliesHave a slight clunk noise inside the back of their gen 2? I've taken apart all the paneling used foam tape to secure things and took apart the spare tire area etc and the clunk persists. It seems to vary intensity every time I close the rear hatch. I now suspect this thingy I found mounted in the center of the rear hatch under the plastic...
View 6 RepliesI have a f150 2007 with a 4.2 in it. The CEL comes on and when this happens the air comes out the a/c vents and no where else. We have cleared the code out but it comes back on when we do clear it out the air blows out where the dial is set. I think there is a vac leak somewhere....
View 14 RepliesHaving issue after changing front brake pads? I hear clicking noise every time I change direction (reverse, drive forward), but not when I'm driving on the road. Pad shift noise with StopTech brake pads...
View 14 RepliesThis was happening on my 2008 a couple of months ago and also now on my 2013 I noticed sometimes when I get in the car I push the button once and as usual then I have to push the button the second time and it only goes in neutral and assign comes up and says shift to park position starting so I don't get it this only happens once in a while. Then a couple times later or a couple days later as usual I pushed the button one and everything works fine right into the drive what gives?
View 8 RepliesThe battery has not been disconnected. Any answers?
View 4 RepliesI have a f150 2007 crew cab I bought used. None of the windows work all the time and the passenger side rear does not work at all. Is there a common problem with these trucks bad switches or motors or something?
View 3 RepliesI have an 04 5.4L SCREW Erratic Speedometer.
Most of the time it works, some of the time it bounces or doesn't read at all.
I have a 06 f-150 crewcab and the driverside front window is having a hard time rolling up. It goes down fine, but getting it back up you have to play with the switch for a while and then it will roll up. Having this issue? Is it the switch or the window motor?
View 5 RepliesI changed my front rotor and brake pad with the oem parts last week. However, it has noise come out everytime when I touch the brake. Is it normal? Or does it need times for break down? Or I did something wrong in installing that cost the noise?
View 13 Replies[URL] .... My engine has been making this sound for a while now I am at 125000 miles, what it could be and if i need to be worried about it? also, possibly unrelated, it has a SUPER hard time shifting into reverse, it gets stuck and it feels just super sticky shifting in and out of reverse. Sometimes I can't even get it to go into reverse without letting the car roll a bit. Also, at around 3k rpm the engine sounds a little grinder in any gear. 2008 Honda Fit Sport ...
