I have a 2007 Prius with about 77,000 km on it. Lately I've noticed that the car would make an unusual noise sometimes when driving at around 50 - 60 km/hr in stealth mode, with slight accelerator pressure such that the energy monitor shows power flowing from the battery to the motor (ie - not gliding or regen braking).
View 1 RepliesI'm a longtime Prius owner starting with a 2007. Currently have a 2010 model V (not the wagon, the trim level with ATP). The maximum stealth mode speed (i.e. ICE not turning over) is about 46MPH. The maximum stealth mode speed for my old 2007 was 42MPH.
I just bought a 2012 Prius c as my commuting car. What is the maximum stealth mode speed?
My 2002 Prius A/C is acting strange. From what I understand, if you have Max A/C on it will keep the ICE running. Lately my car isn't doing that. Whenever I'm at traffic with the Max A/C on it will go into stealth mode then it will turn the engine on then back off again in a cycle.
Also whenever I hit the brakes or simply slowing down with the ac on the whole car will shake violently like theres a strong earthquake and its about to stall unless I shut the A/C off. This only occurs when the A/c is on btw.
Note :: I've had my ac charged so its not out of refrigerant. But I don't know what's causing it.
So on my wives Prius which is an 2007 the rear tires are wearing more greatly on the insides that the outsides and they are wearing evenly on both the rear left and rear right inside. So not one is more worn than the other..
The tires are heavily worn, with that said the car rides extremely bumpy to the point the entire car is shaking on the freeway at 75 mph or higher. So much so it induces motion sickness which is odd for me. So also besides the alignment question, what else could be causing the insane amount of bumpiness? I balanced and rotated them yesterday but that didn't solve the issue.
I have only been driving my Prius for a month. I have been paying close attention the to the Car energy usage screen. I have been noticing the car (while on cruise control) entering into stealth mode (Engine seemingly off and power getting drawn from battery only w/ about 3/4 bar on EV) on the highway @ 60mph going down a slight decline. I have been trying to mimic this on my own w/o the cruise control, but no matter what I try (P+G and other techniques) I cannot get the same results.

When I put on the emergency brake, the brake pedal or when I put the car in park or take it out of park and put it in D, it makes a "chuck chuck chuck" sound, not high pitched, but not a low sound either. It seems to be coming from under the hood on the left side. It sounds something like a belt slipping or a pump with a squeak maybe?
It does not appear to make this noise when simply depressing the brake while driving, so I'm not sure it's the same abs actuator issue.
I decided to get an alignment (for the first time since I took delivery of the car). I noticed some unusual wear on the inner and outer tire. I will post a before and after pic of the alignment. As you can see they were unable to correct everything.
The shop says that the prius does not have any way to correct camber in the front nor was there any way to correct the toe in the rear.
I cannot think of anything that would have messed up the rear left. The shop was saying these repairs will need either a new control arm or strut.
I have a 2005 Prius with 128,000 miles. At the last service the mechanic pointed out that the front tires were wearing significantly on the outside. I had them do an alignment but the before numbers were hardly out of spec. Everything was in spec except the front right camber - it was right at the limit (negative). Everything else was perfect. I would have expected only significant positive camber on both sides would cause both front tires to wear on the outside, when everything else was in spec?
View 8 RepliesI'm experiencing an unusual grinding noise when accelerating from a dead stop but only in this specific situation.
1. When battery is at a low state of charge and the AC is on, therefore, whenever I slightly step on the gas the engine will immediately start.
2. Only under this condition, when I slightly press on the gas and the engine will start to charge the battery and propel the car at the same, there is a slight grinding noise coming from the front of the car. I don't know what this noise is, it sounds like gears grinding, it's very light though.
I know it's not the brake accumulator noise, because that's a whole different sound, and also this only happens under the condition I described above. When battery is low and ac is on, and the engine will need to start right away even when gas peddle is slightly depressed.
The best way to describe the sound is if you were to take a soda can and cut it in half and rub the two halves together (the edges) it sounds like that.
Also, there are no lights on the dash. It's a 2009 with about 73,400 miles.
The transaxle oil has already been changed maybe 10,000 miles ago.
The noise started recently, at least I only noticed it recently since it's summer and I have the ac on much more. There are no drivability issues, but the thing is, this noise was not there before, I know I'm not hearing things. You know when you drove a car for quite some time you will naturally know what sounds are normal and what sounds are new.
I just recently bought a 2007 priuswith 77k miles and really love it and just 3 days ago installed the EV switch (manual button, not the coastal one) because of my plans to get it to plug in in the near future, and it worked very nice until today. No matter what i do and when i press it, it just keeps saying "Cannot change to ev mode now" doesn't matter if i push it before the ICE warmup or after. its in the range where it should be working like plenty of battery, not pushing the accelerator at any time, under 34mph, and not while the ICE is running....it was in the mid 80's today which is cooler than last 2 days. I'm just not sure what to do anymore...I do have a check engine light on for 02 sensor but it has been on since I bought the car.

I have tried numerous times and different ways to put it on with no luck. It powers up for ignition with no issue but I can't just listen to the radio or reset the tire pressure because it can only go into ignition mode.

I have a neighbor who has worked on these and will show me how to replace it. Right now I have two questions. I keep coming up with how to disable it not the actual part.
View 1 RepliesI had my 07 prius detailed today and it looks real nice BUT, I started it up afterwards and the touchscreen was in diagnostic mode and the warning lights on the dash were acting up. The warning lights seem to be OK now except that the tire pressure indicator flickers like it is partially shorted. The issue with the touch screen is that it alternates every 10-15 seconds between diagnostic mode and the regular display but only when the ICE is running. If I am just sitting in shutdown idle ( like at a stop light) it behaves fine.
View 8 RepliesOk so this past weekend I finally got my car up and running with kinetics stage 3 kit took it out for a drive plenty of times this weekend everything turned out great. Car pulls really hard. I also installed some new coilovers and spacers. This morning I woke up and drove my car to my local general tire shop to get aligned. When driving It first sounded great but after about 10 min, And yes I punched it a few times, the car started to make a wahh wahh wahh wahh wahh wahh wahh wahh wahh. With the speed of the car. Not from the engine! Now I'm hoping it's a wheel bearing or something because I've never heard one before.

My 2010 Sonata GLS recently started to emitting some noise during acceleration, seemingly come from under the hood. The noise is most noticeable between 15-25 MPH, and is more noticeable when I go uphill. The noise also becomes more frequent with higher speed.

This morning I had an unusual problem after starting up the car. When the gas engine kicked in, the car started shaking a great deal as if the engine mounts had come loose and the engine was moving around. I quickly turned it off and waited a few minutes. When I tried it again, everything was normal.
Thinking back, I'm not sure if I put it in gear before the problem occurred. Wonder if putting it in gear just as the engine is starting up could trigger something like this.
So earlier today i noticed this unusual noise coming from the engine bay. You cannot hear it if your sitting inside the car. Only time you can hear it is if the car is running and you happen to be standing in front of the car.
The noise isn't constant and tends to come and go. After about 6 plus tries trying to film it, I finally got a clip where you can hear it for a bit.

Yesterday when I was on my way to a funeral, I noticed that whenever I braked kind of hard there would be a lot of noise and vibration on my car. The noise seemed to be coming from the front passenger side of the car and seemed to pull to the right a bit. I pulled over and took a look and everything looked fine but the sound and vibration was still there.
I drove about 10-15 minutes tops like this, parked the car, did the funeral home service, and 2 hours later while driving to the burial site (about 20 minute drive on the streets and freeway), everything felt fine. No vibration, no noise, nothing.
After the burial site I drove another 15 minutes to my parents house but this time you could hear the sound faintly and only when I braked hard. I jacked up the car and took off all the tires to take a look at the brakes/rotors and everything looked ok. I had plenty of pad left and the rotors seemed fine. With the tires on, I am able to spin the tires with my hands no problem.
This morning I drove to work and had no issues at all. No sound, no vibration, nothing. So at this point, I am stumped at what could have caused the noise and vibration earlier yesterday morning.
