Started the car the other day and a loud whining noise followed by the car "jumping" when I stepped on the gas. It would go/stop for a second, then shut down. Mechanic who is not a Prius expert said it was the tranny. He could put in a used one (77k miles). Car has 250k miles on it. Is it worth it? Or should I just part it out. I'm worried about things like the battery going next.
View 8 RepliesI need to diagnose an issue I've had with my 2007 Prius with 79,000 miles on it. Several months ago I noticed a distinctive whining/humming noise coming somewhere from the engine compartment of the car while driving. The noise may be present at lower speeds, but the volume of the noise appears to increase proportionately with my acceleration and as such is most noticeable at highway speeds of 50 - 70 miles per hour. As I accelerate faster, the noise level seems to increase. If I take my foot off the gas and coast, decreasing speed, the whining noise gets lower in volume. I believe I first noticed this noise about 6 months ago, but wasn't more proactive about it like I normally would be because at first the noise didn't seem overly loud and my extended warranty unfortunately was up once I hit 77,000 miles. Now 6 months after I first noticed the noise, I believe it's definitely louder than it was when I first heard it, so much so that I can pick it out over the radio being on at a decent volume.
After checking some forums I thought the culprit might be a wheel bearing. I took it into a local Midas shop at they informed me that my passenger-side front wheel bearing was actually breaking apart in pieces. Obviously I had that wheel bearing replaced but I was also hoping this was the source of the whining noise. Unfortunately that wasn't the case as driving it home the noise was still present. They also said the tires were not balanced properly (from my Toyota Dealership no less when I had them install new tires) so I had the tires rebalanced as well. They did take the car for a test drive but probably stop looking for issues with the car as soon as they saw the wheel bearing in that condition. Also that shop does not specialize in Prius' or hybrids so they might not be able to notice the noise that shouldn't be there like I can.
Other than wheel bearings, where this noise could be coming from. Some posts on here possibly pointed to the ICE water pump or transaxle fluid (which as far as I know has never been replaced since I bought the car new).
I have a 2007 prius, i replace the original battery with a Optima prius battery about 3 months ago, Never have had any problems with the car but old battery was getting weak. After replacing the battery everything was still normal. Two days ago i came home shut the car off and went in. Next day i had no power(nothing dome light, locks, etc like 12v battery was disconnected), thought maybe something got left on so i jumped it under the hood and it started and ran fine. Let it run for about 30mins turned it off then went to turn it back on, again nothing, I checked the Optima in the trunk and its fully charged and the main 120 fuse is good and all other fuses i can find also are good, But the car has no power to anything or less i jump it from under the hood, jumping it at the optima does nothing. I followed the 12v battery wire till it went through the floor pan under the rear seat still had 14.6v.
Can't tell where the wire goes but the fuse box under the hood has no power. Have also tried another good battery with same results. Is there a fuse hidden some where or could this be a problem with the inverter? I have jumped the car a few times and it will start up and run fine and gas motor will even cycle on/off like normal.
I have an 08 camry v6 with 31K. I noticed when I got off the highway after driving for about a 1/2 hour the engine had a loud vibrating/ticking noise when I stepped on the gas. This morning when the car was cold and I drove it locally it was fine, i also checked the oil and it's clean and full. Not sure what's going on. Also this only happened after I had the whole car painted not sure if it's related since I dont know if they take parts off to paint a whole car.
View 2 RepliesMy 2007 Prius II is starting to sound like a little roadster - when I was driving on the freeway behind a large car I thought it was them, or just hoped we braked and hit the accelerator at the same time thinking it couldn't be my car.
Only after that car left did I realize it really was my usually-ninja car making the loud purrs. It cruises quietly and the sound goes away, it's hitting the gas that makes it loud. The mileage is the same, it feels the same, it's just loud now.
I am having a problem with my 2004 Toyota Camry XLE V6 brakes. For the past couple months I keep seeing the brake dash light turn on and the brake fluid is constantly going down but I don't see any wet spots under the car. I needed rear pads so I kept thinking that it was just the fluid going down because of worn rear pads but I changed the rear brakes last weekend and still have this problem. Today when I went to drive the car for the first time of the day I heard this loud noise every time I stepped on the brake pedal. I checked the brake fluid level and it was a little below low so I filled it back up. I kind of feel like I've had to fully press down on the brake pedal lately to stop the car. There's plenty of brake power but I feel like I have to push all the way down and I don't remember it being like that.

Some family members borrowed my truck, and when they returned I have a loud whining noise coming from the rear axle, which I have determined is a 9.75 rear. I checked oil level and it was high enough, but has a slight leak from the pinion seal. Everything feels solid but I have nothing to compare it to.
Its on a 2005 Super Cab with the 5.4L 183,000 miles. The front pinion seal was replaced in Feb 2 years ago, by the dealer's mechanic, who may have been a shade tree mechanic.
I am a Youtube Certified Mechanic, as in, I watched about 10 videos of people working on their 9.75 differentials, and realize I don't have all of the tools to do the job, such as a press, or race drivers, or the special gauge.
How many of you have tackled this issue? What did you find? What am I looking at for cost? I am on a very small budget.
I bought a 2004 6.0L F-250 used a few weeks ago. There have been a few problems here and there that I have been competent enough to fix. I am now facing a problem of A: the truck not starting (I believe it was just a battery problem, charged and started fine). But also B: I have had a slightly frayed serpentine belt that I noticed a few days ago. After I got the truck running from my the no-start and driving it around the block I parked it and went inside. Came back out a few minutes later and I tried to start it. It hesitated a little bit but started with a loud whining noise and white smoke coming from the belt. Turned the engine off and saw on one of the bottom wheels (pulleys?) some residue that looked and smelled like burnt rubber. Is this just simply a need for a new belt?
View 5 RepliesI have a problem with my reverse in a 5 speed 105 hp Tdi. It jumps out of place when i try to move the car, makes a loud grinding noise and pops back in, I'm guessing the selectors are worn or maybe the teeth are too. My question is, how hard is it to replace the selectors (if it is the selectors that are worn of course), what is the cost of getting it done in the shop and most important does this sign mean I will have the same problems with the rest of the gear in nearby future?

The whole truck is vibrating when on. When I accelerate I hear a loud noise like something is hitting a fan. I'm scared to even drive it. The rpm's have been jumping around.
What could be causing this? I already replaces Fuel filters.
I had a problem with my brakes about 4 months ago. They were making a barking noise when I stepped on the brake pedal. The dealer bled the brakes and reflashed software. Now the problem is back and they say I probably new a new brake actuator. It should be covered by the extended warranty. I hope a new actuator will fix this. I like everything else about the car. (Have 37,000 miles)
View 16 RepliesFor the past few months I've been hearing a loud fan-like buzzing noise coming from the passenger side of the front of the car. I don't know that much about cars, but it almost sounds like the engine is racing or something is spinning too fast. It has gotten increasingly worse, and seems especially loud at high speeds on the highway.
It is not the heating/cooling fan - the noise is present when the heating/cooling system is turned off.
My 2007 Ford Sport Trac 4x4 with 47K on it, has a loud whining noise while driving. I checked the wheel bearings and there is no play side to side or up and down. No noise rotating the wheels. I noticed that both drive shafts turn while rotating a front wheel off the ground. No dash lights are on indicating it`s in 4 wheel drive. Could the 4x4 shift motor be bad and not disengaging 4 wheel drive ? Is there a way to check it ?
View 7 RepliesJust picked up a 05 with 99500 on it. Drives fantastic and previous to this I used to have an 05 way back that I drove new to 64k. Anyway I test drove it in the rain and with chatter between my wife and I with the sales rep I didn't notice it but now I found that there is a whining noise coming from the timing chain area of the motor. Its only when the car is on and it gets louder as you go towards the passenger side and away from the hybrid components. Here is the sound from my iphone near the motor.

View 9 RepliesSo I have had my 2005 Prius for over a year now. I love my car but after 7 months it made a whining noise coming from by the pulley. When I would accelerate the noise would get worse. Engine light came on tested and said loss of power. The car would not go up large hills it was gutless. So I parked it. I recently just replaced the pulley and now the noise is gone. I have been driving it short distances and at about 30 miles per hour the car would sputter and hesitate. I would let off the gas and push down on gas pedal lighter and it would go fine.

The air conditioning blows cool, but not cold. When the A/C is turned on, it makes an unpleasant whining noise. I have a recording of it.
It did not make this noise 5 months ago, and the A/C output was colder then. I haven't used the A/C that much over the winter, but it's starting to warm up now and I've noticed it's not doing as well as it used to, and it isn't sounding very good either.
I know this noise is the Thermos Pump and it operates when I turn the car on and off. Question - is it failing - also a really annoying noise, but I'll put up with it as long as nothing's breaking.
View 4 RepliesWhile I was driving today, I noticed a "whining" noise that sounded like a belt squealing that got louder as I increased speed. I pulled over to check the see if it was in fact a belt, and when the engine was revved in park, I heard nothing. As soon as I started to move, the noise started, then increased in volume.
I assume that this is some sort of wheel related problem.The sound seems to be coming from the right rear wheel. I just got back from the dealer. The tech said that the main bearing in the drive shaft is bad. They have to replace the whole drive shaft to fix the problem. I am glad that it didn't completely fail while on the interstate, I bet it would have done some damage.
I have a new GTI which is awesome, but second gear has a very loud whining noise. Very easy to reproduce: in second gear rev it up to 3000 rpm and let go of the gas. This happens only in second gear. Under a moderate acceleration or while engine braking. Should I be worried, should i have it checked? Is this normal? It is a 6 speed manual gear box.
