Just bought an 05 yesterday. It has 193k. The steering seems to have some play and an occasional clunking sound when turning the wheel. I do not know of a dealer or an independent shop that will give me an honest opinion or quote..
View 2 RepliesSo my 09' Camry now has 130K KMs on it and for the last few months I've had an issue where when I turn the steering wheel (at rest and while moving) there is a clunking sound and feel in the steering wheel at various spots in the steering wheel rotation.
I'm worried the u-joints (if it uses them) in the steering column are worn out and might need replacing/lubricating but I'm not sure how to address the issue without an expensive Out of warranty visit to the dealer.
'05 Gx470 w/ 93k mi. Time for new parts for all orig. frt. suspension? Started having "Clunking" up frt. Assume time for new shocks all around. Also, grease from upper ball joints half-way down steering knuckle arm, so probably dry? Thinking of replacing everything up frt. incl. hub bearings while have all apart and be done w/ it. Notice in FSM that this means replacing both upper and lower control arms that come w/ bushings and ball joints installed. Parts very pricey even w/ discounts ( 27% at myLparts), somewhere around $3,500 +/-, incl. rr. shocks. Rather cry once and hopefully get get another 90K +/- mi. w/o problems. I've always gone w/ OEM parts in past and probably paid the price, but since I'm doing all the work, hopefully evens out in long run.
View 1 RepliesRecently when I leave my driveway which only has a slight grade to it my truck makes a clunking sound when I hit the gutter and while turning slightly. Also my front drive line from transfer case to front axle has some play in it. I can rotate the front drive line about 3/4" to an 1" while parked in the driveway. Changing u joints. I figured this would be a good starting point. 2005 XLT 4x4 5.4L F150.
View 8 RepliesOur 2012 Prius with now 17,000 miles in 8 months has developed a clunking noise when turning the steering wheel, especially far to the right at low speeds.
The first time the dealer identified it as a failed intermediate shaft and replaced it under warranty. Shortly after we told them it was starting to make the noise again, but they claimed they couldn't replicate the sound and anything they heard was normal 'linkage' (whatever that is). Shortly thereafter the clunking progressed so we took it in for now the third time, and they confirmed the problem, spoke with Toyota who said we must have had a bad part, and replaced it again.
Bought an 05 FX4 SuperCab in May - been in shop twice for a "clunking" sound when accelerating from a dead stop. Dealer says it's "operating as intended" and that no damage was being if I continue to drive. I thought it was a rear problem with the limited slip. Dealer says it's the tranny and that Ford is looking into the problem (apparently quite a few are coming back). She runs smooth and shifts fine once she gets going. Just starting from a complete stop feels painfully wrong.
View 14 RepliesI have 2012 sentra with CVT transmission & 60,000 miles. I just got 60,000 miles service done. Service adviser called me to let me know that I need to have replaced upper strut bearing on the front (left & right) replaced because they are making clunking noise when turn wheels or parking. When I asked for the reason why they should go bed he told me that it's normal, some sand other debris could clog there or water could have damaged it.
View 4 RepliesOften when I am turning the steering wheel, even a little it now seems, I hear a whooshing/rubbing sound and feel just a little bit of that rubbing. It feels/sounds like it's coming from the housing right behind the wheel itself, maybe where the shaft bearing is. Is this normal?
View 9 Replies I purchased back in January my 2013 Passat and today for the first time, I noticed that when I turn my steering when the car is not moving, I hear a clunking sound and I can actually feel the clunk too.
When I'm driving I don't feel or hear anything. It's really when the car is on but not moving.
This is getting annoying because this is the 3rd time something is going wrong with my car.
Going back to the clunking, I was reading that it's a common problem with most VW vehicles.
What it could be. I don't wanna look like an idiot that's been going to the dealer so often for these types of issues.
My FSB is making some clunking noises. Literally sounds like metal on metal banging. Im thinking its the FSB bushings. I just put the bar in about 4-5 months ago, not sure how the bushings could be shot already. The car only makes these noises at low speeds. On the highway i dont hear a thing. I installed the bar myself, so i know there is very little room for play.
View 5 RepliesMy 2005 GX (108k miles) seems to be in great shape. When i replaced the front CV boots i looked carefully at all suspension components and i did not see anything damaged, loose or suspicious.
However, when the truck is SLOWLY moving (entering into my driveway or getting out of parking spot), and when i turn the steering wheel ALL THE WAY to the right, i hear and almost feel a single semi-loud clunk from under the car. I am 99% sure it is related to the steering movement. When the car drives straight or when i am making smaller turns on the street, there is no clunk, noise or vibration at all. I haven't noticed it during U-turns yet, but maybe i haven't paid enough attention. Something must be loose or worn out. The clunk is very obvious when it happens.
Where this could be coming from? Any well known weak components in the front suspension setup that may need attention at 108k miles? I am thinking about tie rod ends or sway bar links but i am not sure if a bad tie rod / link would produce such "clunk" when turning all the way.
Today, I took my 2007 Saab 9-3 2.0T with 67,000 miles on it to a local mechanic to check the right front suspension that has been making a clunking sound when hitting potholes, etc. I was told that the right front coil spring is broken. This afternoon, I looked on line on some of the Saab discussion boards and saw that for cars up 2006 that there was an extended warranty offered for 10 years and 120,000 miles due to multiple cars with this problem caused by an, allegedly, faulty design that allowed the springs to corrode and fail prematurely in snow belt states that salt the roads.

View 15 Repliesso I was heading off the freeway to take my exit at night. Didn't see there was a little curb island between the main freeway and exit. Went with the car over the curb and my right passenger tire went out.
I changed the tire and driven off, then noticed the car sound got much louder all of a sudden and when I turn the steering wheel right or left, I hear or feel a heavy sharp sensation- yet the car turns fine, it just sounds louder when I press the gas and when I turn the steering wheel I can feel my feet vibrating a bit and a soft/sharp squeak sound comes out.
What could this be?
My car is making almost like a clunking sound when starting. It doesn't do it all the time, mostly it is when its a cold start but its happening more frequent. I have the push button start, would warranty cover this?
View 2 RepliesMy 2007 Camry makes clunking noises when I turn the steering wheel to the left mostly. This happens most often when the weather is warm and hot but not during the winter time.
The noise seems to come only from around the steering wheel area inside my vehicle. Hence, I don't think it has to do with the CV Joints or anything like that but the steering wheel unit.
So i have been noticing a lugging/clunking sound when accelerating from turning.
I say it sounds like that because its almost like when a noob driving is trying to shift and stalls for not giving enough gas. but this is comming from the back and for the longest i thought it was due to the ESP kicking in but i been driving quite calm lately due to blow shocks.
I wish I could get a sound clip but its only when driving. Is that normal? Prolly not but hear something when it engages? I am on a OEM haldex controller atm.
When I'm driving slowly and turning over a dip or bump, like driving out of a driveway while turning, I always hear something in my steering assembly clunking. Is it something I can tighten up, like a bushing? I know it's not the usual the abs system clunk, and it's a different sound from the echo inside the tires one may hear at low speeds.

View 3 RepliesI've decide to replace the engine in a 2005 Prius. For whatever reason it went bad around 110,000 miles. It was making some noise and then went all at once. I don't know the complete maintenance history of the car, but I know it was pretty regular. I also know the car was driven mainly highway miles and on A LOT of dirt roads. So, the oil may have needed more frequent oil changes.
View 19 RepliesMy outback has 57k miles on it and already needs the front struts and rack replaced (diagnosed today at the Subaru dealership). The car has been making a whining noise in the engine and has been clunking when making turns for the past week. I have also noticed it hasn't been taking bumps as smoothly. They told me that both ends of the rack are leaking and both front struts are leaking. My husband did admit to hitting the curb on the driver side front tire pretty hard while making a u-turn about a month ago, but all other driving is pretty standard. Yes, we drive on dirt roads in the mountains a few times a year for hiking, but don't drive in a manner that I consider wrong. Did the u-turn incident cause this? (hard to believe that would affect both sides of the rack and struts).
