Prius (2004-09) :: 2005 - Squeal When Braking
Oct 29, 2013
I have a 2005 prius. Got it 7 months ago. I hear brakes squeal when braking. I think I may need new pads. Are they easy to replace?

View 4 RepliesI have Prius 2005 , there is no problem and no registered error code, but the problem occur when i drive my car on long down road and the HVB is full then the charging sound rise ,its like "B" mode on high speed, this sound continue while pressing on the break pedal or not but when i press on the fuel pedal or convert to transmission to "N" mode the sound return to normal ,but if i press on the break or leave my leg the sound return again, this happen if the battery is full but when the battery loss some charge everything return without any problem.
View 5 RepliesI bought a used 2005 Prius in early February, and have driven about 7,000 miles so far.
Yesterday, I noticed an issue with the braking. When the traditional brakes (non-regenerative) kick in when approaching a full-stop the right-rear tire completely locks up, and skids. The weather has been wet the past two days, but the issue is severe enough that the resulting vibrations feel like they may tear the car apart.
There are no warning lights aside from the skid light, so I assume there'll be no code for a mechanic to easily identify this problem. I'm worried if it's not easy to pin down, this may be a huge expense, and if so, I'll have to hold off awhile, and find some other mode of transportation.
What causes my (front) brakes to squeal when i brake at a low speed? Is there a fix besides replacing?
View 3 RepliesI have started to hear a slight (but getting louder) squeal from my brakes when I am braking from moderate speeds (20 mph and under). I know that the car had new stock brakes put on it less than a year ago. What I should do about it?
Stock 1.8T 5spd 2001 discs all around.
I just did the brakes on all four wheels of my 06. I replaced the rotors and pads all the way around with Powerstop parts. I got them from RockAuto.COM as a complete set. The rotors were made in China generic looking things and the pads were Powerstop Evolution Ceramic Disc Brake pads.
Anyhow, I drove around to bed the brakes after getting them installed and now the passenger front tire as a small "rotational squeal" when you are lightly braking.
Oh, one more thing, I'll admit this up front. I did not put any grease on the back of the pads. This was mostly due to I wasn't sure exactly where or how much grease to use.
Whenever i brake i can hear a loud squeal, does that mean its time to change my brakes? Its crazy because i have a 2011 corolla but already have 27,000 miles on it. The squeal is louder when it rains....
View 5 RepliesI keep coming up with unusual issues with my can. Ok, so I just had to replace brakes and rotors on the front. Now when I brake, it makes a mechanical whine/squeal and slips for a second. (Randomly, not evertime) The noise seems to come from peddle. It's not a grinding noise like you would hear with low pads or rotor, or even caliper seizing up. I'm hoping nothing serious. Possibly bad abs pump??
View 19 RepliesMy Treg has about 3K miles on it right now, and since I picked it up, the brakes have squealed (some times VERY loud, some times just a slight squeak at the end of the braking process). It is currently in the shop for the second time to get a fix for this or an adjustment, and I just got a call from my service advisor telling me there is nothing they can do to quiet the brakes--it is the nature of brakes to squeak and squeal.
I realize that brake dust (and man, there is a lot of that on this vehicle) can make the brakes squeal a bit, but does it even make sense that they would tell me that brakes are supposed to squeal?
I am also having a sticking door handle and a defective ac/heat control issue looked at while the Treg is in (I can illuminate both the "auto" and "econ" buttons at the same time, instead of one switching the other off). Should a vehicle at this price point have noisy brakes?
I have a 1997 Explorer, AWD. On Sunday, the right front side started making a really loud, high-pitched squeal, which stops when I step on the brake. I had my mechanic check it, and my brakes are in fine shape (replaced by the same mechanic less than a year ago), so why is this happening?
View 3 RepliesFurther investigation I figured it was the the flap opening and closing. Whenever I push the recirculate button to open and close the vent it squeals. Is there a way I can lubricate the vent?
View 7 RepliesIt seems like I am going thru brakes I just replaced my brakes in May and my Rotors in July and when I brake my truck shakes like crazy. Is it the brakes again or am I missing something.
View 7 RepliesWhile engine braking I started hearing a squeal under the hood , when I started accelerating it became a little louder, I pulled over and when I rev it up it gets louder and has a little rattle sound, sounds like it coming from the turbo....
View 5 RepliesWhy I get this squeal and soft brakes with the ABS and (!) warning lights lit?
View 1 RepliesMy '07 shakes when braking below 7 mph. Coming to a complete stop is never perfectly smooth unless medium to hard braking is required. My thought was that the MG2 is in creep mode even while my foot is lightly on the brake pedal, causing the jerking, but creep works properly while not braking.
The shaking is very steady, at about 6 Hz, the same frequency as the "popping" noise one hears when stopped at the light with the foot lightly on the brake; just enough to keep the car from creeping, but not mashed far enough to turn off the creep current from the battery. I take it there's two sensors on the pedal as well as a potentiometer. Could the problem be mitigated if the creep current were cut off at the presence of a foot rather than having to press harder? There is no shaking on a harder stop, only the slow ones.
Another thought I had was that the pressure pump itself is supplying the brake pressure to the friction pads, causing the pulsing. In a previous thread, we discussed why my pump was coming on so often. Perhaps a leak in the canister causing the pressure not to be buffered, and the pump itself providing the pressure.
I bought my Prius 9 weeks ago with 201k miles. It now has 214k on the odometer... that's right, 13,000 miles in just over 2 months. I love it. It's been problem free so far until last week when someone pulled out in front of me. I had to brake hard and when I did i got the red triangle exclamation point. No words, just the symbol.

For a slight re-cap, first time I had to hit the brakes suddenly, the front 12V plug went out. Alright, thought that was a bit odd, but continuing on.
Second time was a few years later, earlier this summer actually. Had to hit the brakes fairly hard to avoid hitting an idiot dashing across lanes. Entire MFD, radio, cig plug, the whole front works went out. Got online and after a bit of searching found a post saying to check the ACC-B fuse. Sure enough that was it.
So now we're at the third time. Same thing, sudden braking, ACC-B fuse blew. Replaced it, started up the car, blew again. Replaced it, started up the car, blew again. so now I'm at 3 25A fuses that have blown in the past 2 hours, 2 of them within 60 seconds of the car turning on.
One thing I did think was kind of interesting is when I turned the car on, I could hear various noises which sounded like electrical components doing a startup sequence, then it blows. The only thing I have in that front area is a tiny 12V camera, nothing else plugged in at all.
I'm just wondering while under regenerative braking, is the car braking with only the front two wheels? And four wheel braking starts when the friction brakes engage? Or does the rear drum brakes always engage even though the front is braking through the electric motor?
View 12 RepliesYesterday I was driving the prius when I came to stop for a red light there was a man hole cover that was sunken into the ground fairly deep and when the prius went over it while I was braking I lost braking power for maybe .5 of a second and the traction control light kicked on. This has happened a few times but this time was the worst, is this normal for an 06 prius or should I get it checked out? This NEVER happened in florida we just moved to chattanooga (roads are terrible) the car is also not enjoyable to drive here there are too many tight corners/bumpy roads I'm really thinking about selling it for a larger car that can handle the roads here better. My gti also never does this going over the same bumps/manhole covers.
View 19 RepliesQuick back story, bought the car a year ago, seller told me it was in an accident and the radiator was replaced. He let me know that the discharge AC hose was missing and that the other hose was disconnected. I also noticed that the low pressure cap is missing. I recently ordered and installed the discharge hose with the intention of filling the system later.
I have always noticed a noise/vibration coming from the passenger side when braking at low speeds. I havent noticed at higher speeds but maybe there is more road noise. The best I can describe the noise is that is sounds like a compressor running. I have a hunch it's the AC compressor and might be related to the regenerative braking, but I am no expert.

Of late, I have noticed a hi-pitched squeal, but only on sharp right turns!
I only just noticed it recently, the one time I had the radio off and windows down. Normally, the sound is too faint to hear.I did a few turns, both left and right, and it definitely only occurs on right turns -- eg when turning the corner.Since I only just noticed it, I have not yet brought it to my mechanic.
Also, I would note that the sound does not occur if I turn the wheel when stopped (eg at a light). It's definitely a car-in-motion symptom. Any possible areas to check?
