Prius (2004-09) :: 2005 - Car Is Loosing Oil, No Leakage Found
Apr 9, 2011
My 2005 Prius is 161,000 miles old and I have only taken it to the dealership exclusively for service from the start.
Right before my last oil change the warning light (red triangle or with exclamation point) came on and the oil icon came on on the control panel. It would only come on when I pressed on the brakes. I finally pulled over outside an auto parts store and checked the dipstick. It was not showing any oil at all.
I went inside the store and put in three quarts. Took the car to the dealership the next day and they could not figure out why the car had apparently consumed so much oil. In fact, their scanning did not even show the warning light had ever come on.
Odd, since there were no leaks found. They changed the oil and told me to bring it back 1,000 miles later. Today, 1,000 miles later, I checked the dipstick and found that it shows only 1/4 full. When I last checked the dipstick, leaving the dealership, it showed close to full.

My 2005 Prius has 281,000 miles and is burning oil. No smoke or leakage just have to add oil between oil changes. I drive about 30,000 miles per year with my job. Car is paid for and I love not having a car payment, but fear this may be the beginning of the end.

Up until my last oil change at 105,000 miles, I didn't notice any oil usage. When draining my oil, it didn't look like it was quite 4 quarts. After the oil change, I ensured that I had the engine exactly topped off to the upper mark on the dipstick. Around 600 miles later, I parked in the same location and have noticed that the oil level has dropped enough to notice. I am guessing that I will lose well over a quart between oil changes. Before I resign to the normal mechanical reasons (rings, cylinder wear, etc.)
The loss doesn't seem to be gradual which has me looking for other explanations. I also had a Toyota mechanic go over the car and replace the other fluids and filters at 100,000 miles (coincidence I think ).

I recently noticed that my back seat was all wet. It appears water is coming in from the middle of the seat and spreading outward as far as I can tell. The car has been parked outside overnight. All four windows have been rolled up and there is no water in the trunk.

I have a 2005 prius and I got a scanguage to read the codes. I have two lights on my dash. One is the check engine and the other is the (O) light. I think this is something to do with the regen braking. Anyways when I run the scanguage it says no codes found. What type of scanner would be able to pull up all prius codes?

My 2005 Prius was working quite fine until few days ago when the dash lit up with ABS, Check Engine, red triangle, ((!)), and the red car symbol on MFD. Additionally, the hybrid battery fan now comes on once in a while. Mileage on car is 164K; changed the 12v and hybrid batteries at about 153K. Running it through codes scanners, the following codes were read off it:
* B1421 (Solar Circuit malfunction, passenger side. Also, AC malfunction [although on the car, the AC still seems to work fine])
* P3000 (Hybrid control fault, and cruise control error)
*C2318 (Low voltage error-power supply malfunction)
I have checked 12V status using the diagnostic mode this morning and found it to be 12.0V (although 2 days ago when I checked it was 11.8V.)
I have not used the car since as I wouldn't want it park up by the roadside. I'm scarred to think its the hybrid battery again... For now, the car still moves well. What should I check to confirm real cause(s) of all these?

It looks like I have a small leak under my 2001.5 Passat. It is a yellow fluid. I just had my engine light come on but it has since gone off. Whether or not its an easy enough fix to do myself. Very Little actual fluid comes out and if I had not seen it in the snow I would not have noticed.

We have water leak issues for close to a year now, very frustrating. Not heard much of B7s leaking so I thought I'd stop in here and check it out. Great car to drive, only other issue we've had was the cold weather inactive drivers door lock as seen by many others.

I have a 2001 Echo 4-door with automatic transmission that is giving me hell. I smelled raw gas fumes coming from the car and checked under the hood and under the car and ended up finding the leak by smelling the fumes right next to the fuel filler door. The car is getting terrible gas mileage (about 26 mpg) but otherwise runs just fine.
My husband took the filler neck off and inspected it. No blockage or damage was found. It was reinstalled and the same problem came back. This time we traced the lines back to the charcoal canister and removed it. It is from this port that the raw gas fumes are escaping to the atmosphere. I should point this out: the gas smell only occurs when the car is running. If I have been driving it for a few minutes and it has warmed up then it is quite strong. There are no fumes when the car is turned off and cooled down.

My wife's 2005 has a Christmas tree of lights on lighting up the dash including the brake, the large triangle exclamation point, and the check engine light. The MFD says problem and has the little red car with an exclamation point on it. The car will only go in neutral and the ice will not engage. I borrowed a scanner (older Actron) from a friend and it shows no codes. I replaced the 12v battery with an Optima a couple of days ago (after having similar issues) and drove about 60 miles with no troubles. I rebuilt the traction battery back in July and have put about 10,000 miles on it. Should any OBDII scanner pull the codes?

I was changing the engine coolant on my 2005 Prius today. When I went to fill up the tanks, I noticed a small pool of coolant right under the filler pipe. I thought I might have overfilled something, but when I jiggled the filler pipe, I heard an air leak. It looks like there is a bad seal between the filler pipe and the radiator. I also noticed that my coolant recovery tank was empty. I never noticed this before so I don't know if this issue is related.

Scanner found u0293,,,recommended reseal power inverter. what I have read for two days says its Power source ECU.. What happened,,,kids was driving car, had 3 phones plugged in, ac, lights, and when she tried to set cruise, car went into limp mode, gear lights flashing,,,went into neutral,,,stop beside highway,,had to be towed.
12 volt battery charged and tested ok. no blown fuses. I reset ECU by jumping pins 14 and 4. no change, tried master reset by holding brake and power button down, no change..removed ecu fuse to reset, no change.

I have a 2005 Prius with 131k miles. The check engine light came on. I had my mechanic check for codes, he had 3different scanners. There were no codes posted. Next day light went off. It has been off for a week. Now it has returned.

This morning when I heard some knocking from the ICE and found NO oil on the dipstick. You wouldn't BELIEVE the drive the car did the day before when I lent it to my sister-in-law). Anyway, I thought the red triangle would illuminate with low oil. I can't seem to get the light to illuminate. Even when I first start the car and "all" indicators light up during the test. I'd say this is one important light. We've had the car less than a month and I could swear that when we first got it I saw the triangle at start up.

I've got the hybrid battery out of the car and there is a decent amount of corrosion/acid on the copper contacts. I read that after cleaning them off with white vinegar and soaking in a baking soda/warm water mix... They spray some type of anti-corrosion spray on them.

Maybe I am running out of my beginner's luck. Recently when I did the second oil change at 10K miles, I placed the drain pan without taking into account the fact that the oil drains partially sideways. The oil stream ended up splashing off the edge of the drain pan and made a mess. Then I did not withdraw my hand fast enough when unscrewing the oil filter and allowed a stream of oil running down my arm and staining my new shirt. The I filled the new oil filter too full and had one more spill when installing it.
About two weeks later I found there was a very thin coat of oil at the bottom of the oil filter but no drips either on the filter or on the ground. I checked the oil level and it was the same as before. I checked the filter tightness with a torque wrench and it was also as tight as before. I wiped the bottom of the filter clean with paper towel. Now about another two weeks passed and a corner of the bottom of the filter is coated with oil again.
I am thinking maybe it was just the spilled oil gradually making its way from the (outside) top of the filter to the bottom? If there is a leak then I should get at least some drips, not just a thin film every two weeks, right? I also thought about untightening the filter and then tighten it again but I was afraid of large amount of oil coming out, would it? Also I had carefully checked the o-ring and wiped the flange clean before installing the filter and there are so many threads to screw the filter on - it is hard to imaging the filter would not seat correctly.

I have a concern has any experienced seeking water where the aux battery goes in the hatch compartment.? As well as where the emergency tire goes? I was taking the battery out this weekend to take it home and charge it, and I saw the flood of yellow water, how does this water get in the car?
Another question/concern when reconnecting the battery in reverse the positive terminal connects first and then the negative but I was experiencing some sparks pointing my way, I was wearing my plastic/gummy gloves but is this normal should I worry?
And what would happen if I forgot to reconnect the little black pump (the little hose that connects to the battery)?

My 04 has a leak in the wiper fluid system, after running the wipers with fluid, the reservoir leaks and goes bone dry. The rear window never receives any fluid but the windshield receives its normal amount with no noticeable drop in pressure.
Here's the weird part, there are no visible signs of a leak. I poured 3 liters of water and watched it all drain, but there was no water underneath the car. My car is sitting on a slight decline in the garage with the nose slightly higher than the rear of the car.
I pulled the reservoir out and it is not cracked, the leak appears to be somewhere else and it seems to be collecting. I even moved the car and didn't see a puddle of water. What might be happening or where I can look to find anything? I haven't taken it to the dealer and would prefer not to....

Seems like since I did the first oil filter change it seemed very hard to get off oil filter. Today I did about the 5th filter change and it was harder than the last time. Thought i was going to break something. I do snug it up so there is no gap between the engine block and top of filter canister. Should I back it off a turn or 2 and check for leaks, maybe that is what that retainer clip is for near the top of the filter canister to stop it from coming undone so you don't have to snug it up?

I purchased my Prius in late September of last year. I never had to run the A/C at the time before winter came along. The car has 102,000 miles on it when I purchased. It has run great and I really can't complain as I've put another 10,000 miles on it.
Last week during the hotter part of the day (3:30pm at 93 degrees) I pulled out of a small parking lot and pulled forward 25 yards to a stop sign. The car literally lost all acceleration as I pulled away from the stop sign. My A/C was running at the time. There were no red or orange exclamations on the dash. It just wouldn't go anywhere. I hit the stop button shutting off the car.
When I started again there was still no acceleration and the hybrid battery fan was working overtime to move air. I turned off the A/C, parked for a moment to the side, stopped and started the car, it started to move but was sputtering a little. I was only getting power from the gas motor even though I had 4-5 bars on the hybrid battery. The hybrid battery fan was still running high as I went down the road. I didn't turn the A/C back on and instead rolled down my windows.
Now we move to yesterday where I drove the 15 or so miles home from work (90 degrees at 3:30pm). My wife hopped into the car and was heading back in town when suddenly on the freeway she lost all acceleration and coasted off the next freeway exit. She shut the car off on the side of the road and waited a short while. It again had some sputtering but she was able to drive back home.
Similar scenario today. Left work around 3:30, a/c was on, temp around 87, plenty of charge on the hybrid battery. I make my usual little u-turn before backing into my space in front of the house. When I placed the car in reverse it again lost all acceleration power. The radio doesn't turn off, I still have dash lights, etc.
