Prius (2004-09) :: 12V Battery Does Not Crank Car - Code P0A80 And P3021

May 26, 2015

I had a 12v battery issue that I see common. 12V battery does not crank car. Jump car and works fine for a few days. I had this issue and it went away. Dealer said replace 12v battery, or just carry my charger pack with and use that unless it gets worse.

Jump ahead 2 months. I drive 50 miles each way to work 5 days a week. No issues. Yesterday, after my car sitting all day, I am backing out of driveway and get the red triangle. Code was P0A80. I looked it up. I cleared the code and was going to dealer if it came back. Today, after driving 50 miles into work, no issues, I get the red triangle. Code P3021. Fan started running back there too

My question : Would replacing the 12v battery useful for this issue?

Prius (2004-09) :: Replaced 2 Modules In Hybrid Battery - Code P0A80

I have 2005 Prius with 300k miles. I started throwing P0A80 code. I removed the battery and checked all the modules and found 2 of low voltage, ordered them from Ebay and replaced them. I placed the battery back in the car and started the car but got P0A80 code again. I purchased the grid charger from Hybrid Automotive and connected it according to their instructions for 24 hours. I drove a car but got the red triangle again and P0A80 code again. I removed the battery again and tested the voltage of all the modules and these are the readings:

Prius (2004-09) :: Red Triangle Of Death (P0A80) - HV Battery ECU?

I've pulled the HV battery from my 2007 Prius with 144, 000 miles given recent Red Triangle of Death (P0A80) and looking to replace battery pack but want to rule out the ECU. I've searched the threads and found mention of testing the ECU but wasn't clear.

How to test the HV Battery ECU in or out of the car? Using a volt meter and light bulb, etc......I would really like to rule out the ECU before putting dollars in a rebuilt battery pack.

Prius (2004-09) :: Code P0A80 - HV Failures

My 2006 is doing some weird things. I have gone through a couple of HV failures and each time if I got the P0A80 code there was always an additional code telling me what was wrong. Not this time. Some times the battery will sit there while it shows that it is being charged and not take a charge. i.e. not come up off the pink bars, Sometimes it will charge all the way up to green and then fall off dramatically This is really strange because it is not showing any other code other than a crank cam sensor. The 12 volt battery seems to be ok.

Prius (2004-09) :: HV Error Code P0A80

My car has been fine with no changes besides tires last week, its a 2006 Prius and yesterday I got lights on my dash, went to auto zone for a read out and got an HV error code. I was wondering what is the most affordable route for my car to get repaired. I don't notice any mpg differences and everything still charges and recharges as if the errors don't exist.

Prius (2004-09) :: Red Triangle Light With CEL Code P0a80

Was driving home from school yesterday and my 2005 Prius turned the check engine light on and the red triangle light. Plugged into the scan tool it read: P0a80. I have a hybrid battery ordered. It should be delivered on Tuesday. How long can I get out of this failing battery before the car is undriveable? The Prius is my only vehicle and I don't have a problem with installing the battery, I just I'm wondering if the car will just drop dead on me before the battery gets here? The car appears to be driving normally with no loss of performance or MPG.

Prius (2004-09) :: False Positive P0A80 - Replace Hybrid Battery

Recently my 2nd gen Prius has been acting, strange. I hoping to get some insight to the best way to fix the problem, so I will include as much detail as I can.

Over the weekend I went to go run some errands and while I was leaving my neighborhood, my dash lit up like a Christmas tree, with the red triangle, CEL, low tire pressure, and the exclamation on the MFD. So I quickly turned around and parked it back in my garage.

A little later and after doing some research on the forum here, I began to troubleshoot, at which point the feeling of dread was at the pit of my stomach and decided to go to the local auto store and have the code read. It was of course the "P0A80 - Replace Hybrid Battery Pack" the exact message I didn't want it to be.

So I turned around and went back home, the entire time all the lights stayed on and monitored the SOC of the traction battery. It was charging, just increasing and decreasing quicker than usual.

Prius (2004-09) :: Codes P0A80 And P3023 - Hybrid Battery Replacement?

I turned on my car this morning to find myself faced with a variety of colored lights, including a little red car on a black bar on my MFD. Drove straight to the dealer and received word that the car was throwing codes P0A80 and P3023 and they recommend replacing the hybrid battery. I have a 2006, have done all the recommended maintenance at the dealer and it has about 133,000 miles on it.

Prius (2004-09) :: Warning Lights Appeared With Error Code P0a80

Bunch of warning lights appeared and the dealer said it's code P0a80 and they recommend replacing the battery. I'd like to try to fix this myself and would like to hear your thoughts...

Plan is to check the traction battery for corrosion and use a voltmeter to test the cells and replace if needed. Prius 2004, 158,000.

Prius (2004-09) :: Warning Triangle Came On And Scanner Show P0A80 Code

My Prius has started throwing the code P0A80, it all happened after I went away for work and left the car in storage for 15 days, during that time I left the OBD scanner plugged in and it drained the 12v battery, a quick jump start and it was back up and running.

While I was backing it out of the driveway the warning triangle came on and the MFD said "problem" the scanner showed the P0A80 code. I thought that was odd, but maybe related to the flat 12v battery and self discharge of the traction battery so I reset the code, it drove normally to the shops. When I restarted it and started to drive it threw the same code again.

I then installed techstream on my laptop to try and get some more in depth answers but was having trouble getting that running on Windows 8. So overnight I disconnected the 12v battery and would try again in the morning.

I got techstream working and connected it up to the car, connected the 12v and started it. While I was configuring techstream to graph the pack voltages I noticed something odd, the engine was being loaded and unloaded in 2 second cycles, and at the same time the inverter was whining as it does this. I was thinking maybe it's doing some sort of charge and measure cycle since the ECU's have lost any pack data due to the power loss of the 12v battery?

It ran like this for 20 mins or so and the engine stopped, techstream showed pretty normal cell voltages, I couldn't see any wild differences between the cells.

Prius (2004-09) :: Check Engine Light / Red Triangle And Code P0A80

I'm guessing that I need to repair or replace the HV battery. But I'm not sure.

Today I drove for about 20 minutes with no issue. 10 minutes later, I got back in the car to drive again. This time, after about 20 seconds into the drive, a string of dash lights came on; Red triangle, VSC, Check engine.

The VSC light went away. But the red triangle and check engine light are still on. So, I had the trouble codes pulled by a mechanic, and the code P0A80 was returned along with a statement reading 'replace hybrid battery'.

Should I take this at face value? Or look for something else first?

Prius (Gen 2) :: P0A80 Code - Warning Lights On The Dash

My 2007 Prius with 176k had the warning lights on the dash. I finally got the code read and it is the P0A80 code. The 12 volt battery seems good, it is about a year and a half old or so. That was the only code.

Prius (2004-09) :: 2005 - P3019 Along With P0A80 Pulled Over

I've a 2005 Prius with ~193,000 miles. It recently started throwing codes P3019 (Battery Block 9 becomes weak) and P0A80 (Replace Hybrid Battery). Codes were pulled with a laptop running Techstream and a mini-VCI cable.

Figuring I had some time, cleared the codes and only drove the Prius for short trips. At first things were OK, but of course the codes reset after a few days, and pretty soon they were permanent. And the car had very little power, battery fan running on high.

Then when slowly accelerating from a traffic light (there is no rapid acceleration in a gimpy Prius), there was a "BANG" noise, really loud. It sounded like someone tossed an M-80 at the car. Pulled over, didn't see any damage, though there was a strong "fireworks" smell like gunpowder outside the car. Started the car, it fired up fine, drove it home.

After a couple more weeks the car refused to start, wouldn't go into "Ready" mode. So finally I took the interior apart and opened up the battery case. Here is what I found (pic attached).

Moral of story - don't drive too far when you get the P0A80.

Prius (2004-09) :: 2006 - P0a80, C1310 Keeps Coming After HV Replaced

I have a 2006 Prius, It has 165k miles. Recently it gave me a code to replace hybrid battery pack, I read this code with my scanner from HF. I have changed out a battery pack with replacing the bad modules before so I am not a bigger with the system. I took out the pack and checked and it seemed like all the modules are in the 7.8 range. This was confusing since the code reader was saying to replace the battery pack. I put it all back in the car and tested it again and got the same results. It seems like the HV system is not being recharged any longer. It seemed odd, normally when I remove my foot from the gas the system shows the car regenerating power.. Now when I step on the brakes I only see that. The system does charge but randomly it will drop down where there are 1 to 2 bars left and then charge back up again.

P0a80

C1310 malfunction in HV system (when i read about this people say this is a ghost code that comes up from the battery pack.. but maybe not in my case.

Prius (2004-09) :: P0A80 Error Codes Appeared, Still Pending

I recently replaced my engine water pump at 164,000 miles on my 2007 Prius, the car sat for 3 weeks while waiting to gather needed parts, i.e., water pump, coolant and Airlift system for adding coolant fluid. After installing the new water pump the car ran rough for 5-10 minutes upon initial crank (parked for 3-weeks). I took a 20 minute test drive around the neighborhood that evening, outside temperature around 65 degrees F, and car ran fine. SOC looked ok, bars moving between Blue and Green, everything appeared normal.

The next morning, I backed out of my driveway and the Red Triangle of Death appeared on the dash so I parked the car.

That evening I hooked up OBDII ELM327 scanner using Engine Link and picked up 2 separate P0A80 error codes, 1 of them was pending. I disconnected the Aux battery for 3-5 mins to clear the error's, Red Triangle of Death was cleared, then drove the Prius for 20 minutes with no errors or alarms. SOC seemed to be normal. OBDII ELM327 scanner showed the HV batteries were charging at same level, 16.8V and Aux battery was registering at 14.0 Volts.

The next morning, after 20 minutes of driving the Red Triangle of Death appeared, and shortly after I experienced loss of power, with sporadic engine idle and interior traction battery fan was on. Luckily I had made it to work and was able to pull into a vacant parking lot.

I did notice that around the time the Red Triangle of death came on this morning the SOC dropped quickly to 1 Purple bar and was slow to charge then shortly after came the loss of power and sporadic engine idle followed by interior battery fan.

Prius (2004-09) :: 2006 With 160k - Red Triangle / Repeated P0A80

A couple months ago, my car suddenly got the red triangle. The dealership said that I needed a new battery, and eventually a new water pump. I couldn't afford $4500 as I bought the car just 9 months earlier and am making payments on the car.

I found a guy that was to "recondition" the battery, which set me back about $1200+. After getting it back, the car has been making a rattle sound in the engine bay when under acceleration (it sounds like a loose screw, but I don't know).

After about a month, I got the red triangle again. The car's performance deteriorates, the state of charge fluctuates a lot more. One minute it is green then literally a minute later it is purple then green again. The guy that reconditioned my hv battery said all the cells are good but for some reason became unbalanced, so he put it on the grid charger and rebalanced it (I believe it was on there for about 24 hours).

2-3 weeks later, it happens again. Same thing, the guy says it is unbalanced again and stuck it on the grid charger (because of time constraints, it was only on the grid for about 5 hours).

Then again 2 weeks later it repeats itself. A couple days before it happened, I tried out the elm327 adapter, custom pids, and torque app. Before the triangle came on, the delta state of charge got to about 0.9% and was charging up to just about 90% and down to just below 39%. Same thing though, from high to low in a matter of less than a minute. Same code P0A80. Sitting on the driveway, all 14 modules would be consistently within .2 volts. But when the car started acting up, I saw a voltage difference of about 3 volts between highest and lowest modules. The repair guy said the same thing again. The cells are good but got unbalanced again. This time he recommended for me to leave the car for the weekend so it can sit on the grid charger for a minimum of 24 hours, which I did. I picked it up yesterday and it's driving fine right now.

He is also recommending that I buy a grid charger and charge the battery every couple weeks to avoid these problems. I mean, how do I know if he actually reconditioned the battery, or has just been resetting the fault code and grid charging the battery? Btw, I did the auxiliary battery test and it was perfect. I don't know when the battery was last replaced but I believe with how strong it is, that is was done sometime recently before purchasing the car late last year.

Prius (2004-09) :: P0A80 / C1310 / C1259 And P3015 Codes On Scanner

The Prius has 115ooo miles. It is a 2005. Just recently it started showing the red triangle of death, check engine light, and the brake light. When I check for codes using a scanner it comes with the following:

Prius (2004-09) :: 2006 - Got Error Codes P0A80 / P3019 / P3000?

Yesterday I got the "red triangle" and check engine light along with these 3 codes:

P0A80 - replace hybrid battery pack

P3019 - battery block 9 becomes weak

P3000 - battery control system

In April of this year I have the entire battery replaced, in September I got the triangle again and one cell was replaced under warranty. My warranty is good through April 2016, however I'm afraid that this new code P3000 is going to be something not included in my warranty.

What could potentially be wrong? This is a 2006 Prius with approximately 208,000 miles. I'm not sure this is worth it anymore especially if I have to keep putting in more money.
