Prius :: 2002 - Excessive Noise / Hum While Driving

May 10, 2011

I have a 2002 Prius. It hasn't been well maintained over the last year and a half, and I had been hearing more and more ambient noise while driving. I thought it was because the tires were wearing out. Well, in the last month I finally got caught up on maintenance (oil change, some new filters, etc.) and got a new set of tires; however, the excessive noise is still there. It becomes noticeable at about 25 mph, and gets louder and higher in pitch as speed increases; there's a noticeable vibration as well from about 45-50 mph.

I don't think it's engine related; the noise happens whether I'm accelerating or just coasting.

Golf/GTI VI :: Excessive Sunroof Noise When Driving

I have continous white noise when driving with the sunroof closed but the sunshade open. As soon as I close the sunshade the noise goes away. This noise is prevalent at 50 km/h and up.

Dealer said there were no leaks, and they claim to not hear the noise. I drove another MK6 today with my salesman and there was no noise difference between having the sunshade open or closed, even at 100 km/h.

Prius (2010-12) :: Excessive Wind When Driving With The Window Down

This is my first summer in my 2010 Prius. Noticed excessive wind on your face when driving with the driver side window down? I'm guessing it might have to do with the shape of the car. I can drive at freeway speeds in my 02 Civic with the window down but if I'm travelling faster than a crawl in the Prius it becomes really annoying.

Gen 2 Prius :: Excessive Wind Noise At Highway Speed Due To Gap Between Front And Back Door

Recently I have been doing a lot of highway driving with my 2007 Prius. There is noticeably an excessive amount of wind noise at highway speed due to the gap between the front and back door.

After applying a piece of weather stripping from the hardware store, about $5 the wind noise is greatly reduced.

Prius (2004-09) :: Excessive Wind Noise On Highway And Mild Clunk When Engine Kicks On

I'm loving this 'new' 2004 prius with 177k miles on it that i just bought. In New England winters I'm still getting 40-45 mpg and I'm not even trying to get great MPG's.

1.) Wind noise : My biggest disappointment is excessive wind noise over 55 mph. I 'm using this car as a taxi and its so loud inside I'm a little embarrassed with customers in the car. It sounds to me that its coming from the passenger window or passenger side near the windshield, but I can not identify its location at all. I've always been the one driving when looking for it though.

I called a dealer that sells lots of gen II used prius's and he says its fairly common to replace the window seals? The car has a clean car fax.

2.) Mild clunk when the engine kicks on. Not all the time, but sometimes : Other thing is, I can sometimes feel and hear a mild clunk when the engine kicks on. I also feel a little bit if vibration when the engine is on and i'm idling (it was 16 degrees last night so the engine stays on for heat). The oil level is good. I'm due for change in the next 500 miles.

Is this anything I should be concerned about? I'm sure I'm just overly sensitive.

Elantra XD (2001-06) :: 2002 / 2.0 - Excessive Vibration At Light Or Stop Sign

When @ a light or stop sign the car vibrates excessively to the point it makes my daughter sick. I do feel it vibrating but it doesn't bother me but something is definitely wrong. There are no engine lights on, I can hear the top end tapping and clattering, I did check the valve clearances which seem to be barely within specs. She says it vibrates worse when the tank is full. She also said when the tank is full the front end shakes driving down the road. I'm kinda wondering the front end shaking with a full tank might be the rear struts.

Toyota - Corolla :: 2002 - Error Codes P0171 / 0420 / 0441 And Excessive Oil Consumption

Actually I bought a used Corolla 2002 with 120K which seemed fine and the driving is fine. After I bought it, I just found out that the seller has removed the check engine light. When I read the ODB codes, It shows three codes of 0171, 0420, 0441. Also I have recently found out that the engine burns excessive amount of oil. (about a quarter per 200 miles). Actually the driving of the car is fine and as long as I add oil engine it seems fine.I think all of these errors might be just due to a small problem like a broken valve (since it's not high mileage). It seems that there is no vacuum leak from hoses as well.

Honda - Accord :: 2002 - High Idle And When First Cranked Smelled Excessive Exhaust Fumes

The dealer recently replaced the front and side motor supports. Since then I've noticed that the car idles high when first cranked and I smelled excessive exhaust fumes. One time it idled really high and would not idle down when I hit the gas. Then it started idling up and down when my foot was not on the gas. Could there be any connection between this and the motor support installation? Could linkage to the gas pedal have been bent during installation? 2002 6 cylinder Honda Accord EX.....

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: Excessive Movement In Steering Wheel While Driving

I have a 2005 F250 6.0.. I'm the third owner, only 146,000 miles on it. Had most of the front end replaced. Ball joints, tie rod ends, track bar bushing, front end alignment done...

Still likes to walk as I call it side to side while driving down the road. Factory size tires, factory rims. A little excessive movement in steering wheel while driving, side to side and not transferring to pitmen arm. So I think the gear box shot. Got to looking closer and the power steering box has a re-manufactured sticker on it, so thought about rebuilding it. I do not know where previous owner got gear box at.

Passat (B5) :: Excessive Noise At 30 To 75 Mph - Bearings?

My W8 has a noise problem that's getting worse. I've had the tires replaced and had the dealer look at it. My dealer thought the rear rims were bent, but the noise definitely comes from the front end - I'm pretty sure the passenger side. What this could be? I'm thinking bearings but when I jacked the car up there was no play in either front wheel. Had the tires rotated and the noise didn't move.

Touareg :: 2006 - Excessive Road Noise On V8?

Yesterday, I rode in my son's 9-month old 2006 v8 (w/11k miles) and noticed excessive road noise, seemingly from the right front wheel area -- far more than I'm used to hearing in my 07's. It gets worse with speed up to 55mph, then gets better above 55mph. He has done some light off roading; I'm wondering if he has mess-up something, as it sounds like something is rubbing (or as if the wheels were worn to the cord and you are riding on serrated pavement). He plays his music so loud, he has not noticed any problem, nor did the dealer during the 5k-mile or 10k-mile scheduled maintenance.

Passat (B7) :: Excessive Road Noise - Tires?

Feel there is excessive road noise on the highway? (not wind noise)

Seems as though it can be worse depending on the surface. Comparing the B7 to the wife's Q5 is painful. Heck, even my MKVI GTI was silent compared to this. What do you all is a good fix?

Tires? If so, what would be a good upgrade? The P Zero Neros on the GTI seemed pretty good. I'm new to car tires. Long time Jeeper. Dynamite under all carpet?

Chevrolet - Suburban :: 2002 - Scraping Noise While Driving

OK so - I had the rear axle bearings replaced, but I'm still hearing a rotational scraping noise while moving (whether gas is applied or not, or whether braking is applied). Gets slightly louder the faster I go. But when I turn, the noise goes away. It's hard to pinpoint where the noise is coming from. My wife swears it's in the front; to me it sounds like it's in the middle (so it would be being transmitted from the source).

I took it back to our mechanic, but he can't hear it very well - he admits that his hearing is not what it used to be (he's in his 70s). Only thing he hears is "gear noise in the rear"... meaning he'd have to replace the differential in the back which would be prohibitively expensive and not worth it. He said I should come back in a couple weeks when his younger employee will be back so he can listen for it.

Passat (B6) :: 2007 - Excessive Road Or Drivetrain Noise?

2007 3.6 Wagon Sport. My wife has the 18" Samarklan wheels and automatic transmission. We have complained to the dealer since the beginning with only the "you need new tires" response. Well we got new tires last year and the noise was the same. I've had 18" on my old '00 S4 and current '00 A8 with nothing near this amount of noise.

The sound is most like a groan and doesn't seem to be coming from the engine. It's seem most noticeable at lower speeds coming/coasting to a stop, but does not seem to vary with or without braking. It doesn't seem to vary based on turning either.

I don't ride in her car much, but am always shocked how loud it is when I do, as it's so dramatically louder. Also the HVAC 'percolates' constantly which is generally only noticeable at idle. This is a small, secondary concern. I everyone's Passat really this loud?

Silverado :: 2002 4x4 Clicking Noise When Turning To Right And Driving At Low Speed

Search of AF did not turn up any results. My 02 Silverado 4x4 Crew Cab 6.0 has begun to make a clicking noise when I am driving at low speed, and making any kind of turn to the right. This is in 2 wheel drive. No noise when driving straight. If I am driving through the neighborhood , (say, 20-25 mph), and the road curves gently to the right, I can hear an occasional/intermittent click noise, which sounds like it is coming from the LF wheel. It might give a single click every half second or so, sometimes 2 or 3 quick clicks, then silent for a second or 2, then a few more. If it is more heavily loaded, such as sharper turn, or more speed while turning, it is significantly worse, (more frequent clicks, almost constant).

Likewise, if I am at low speed, and turning more sharply, (such as a 90* right turn at an intersection, from a stop), it is almost constant repeat clicking until the wheel is straightened out. I am guessing it is possibly a u-joint on the left side half-shaft (or whatever it is called), that connects the transfer case to the LF hub? Almost sounds like needle bearings beginning to fail, is the best way I can think of to describe the sound. Even though I am in 2wd, the hubs do not unlock, so the front axles are always turning.

Hoping it is not front hub bearing going bad. I just got reassigned back to Dallas, and I will be driving the truck 800 miles to get there this weekend. I have maintained the truck very well, with the exception of having never even really looked at the front driveline components. (That ignorance could be haunting me now, or maybe just stuff that has worn out).

I only use the 4 wheel drive about 6-10 times per year, usually only for a mile or so to get to maintained roads. Never in 4x4 on dry roads, I switch back to 2WD as soon as possible.
