Prius (2001-03) :: Red Warning Triangle And Check Engine Lights Came On
Feb 12, 2016
So I was driving for a couple of hours today in my recently acquired 2001 Prius, when the red warning triangle and the check engine lights came on. The car seemed to still drive fine (70 ish mph cruising). HV Battery? P3000 P3020 Error codes.....

This afternoon, after driving about 150 miles, I came home and shut off my 2001 Prius. It was sitting for about 20 minutes before I turned it back on to drive off. Almost immediately, the hybrid warning light came on on the MFD, the red exclamation mark light illuminated, as well as the check engine light, and the motor shut off. I popped the hood, and could hear a high pitched squeal coming from near the inverter. I called my dealer to ask the service department what I should do, and they just told me to bring it in and they will take a look at it. I live over an hour away, so I don't want to bring it there if I can avoid it. I then shut it off and let it sit for a few hours.
After reading about the possibility of the auxiliary battery being bad, I went and turned the Prius on, and then shut it off several times to reset the hybrid warning light (I had to do so in order to access the aux battery information through the MFD). It turned on without incident, and shut off fine, and after being reset the hybrid warning light shut off, as well as the red triangle light. Then, I went through the process of pulling up the battery voltage information through the MFD.
With the car off, and the lights and fans off, the battery voltage read about 10.0-10.5 V. With the lights and fan on, the voltage dropped to about 9.5 V. After getting those readings, I drove it down the road a little ways, just going about 20 mph. It seemed to work fine. The check engine light is still illuminated. With the motor running, the voltage reading was 13.2 V, and then when I got back from my test drive and shut it off, the voltage hovered at 10.6 V with the lights and fan on.

I was driving last night and my car Triangle Warning Light and Check Engine Light Went on along with on the nav screen a car with a ! mark in it came on. On The info screen the battery level was changing fast from fully charged to just about empty. The car lost almost all power going about 42 miles an hour. I was able to pull to the side and i waited 10 minutes then tried to turn the car on again. I was able to drive home and the warning lights were still on but at least my car had power. What could possible be wrong?

My 2005 Prius with 116K on it has been having some uneven acceleration lately and today the Triangle warning light, the check engine light and the brake light came on at the same time. I had about 1/2 mile to go, so I proceeded slowly and called the dealership which had performed a routine oil chg two days ago. They said that if the lights weren't flashing then I could drive it. They recommended that I take it to AUTO ZONE and put it on the analyzer. This elicited these codes: P3019: no definition and P0A80: replace Hybrid Battery.
I have an appointment in 2 days and I'm wondering about a salvage HV battery since the car is 7 yrs old and over 116K miles.

I have a 2001 Prius with 150k on it. It has been giving me the triangle warning light and the car ! warning light. I can start the car and drive it, but sometimes when I press the accelerator the gas engine just dies and will not kick back in, unless I stop, turn off the car and restart it. (Issue seems to occur more in hot weather, could be a coincidence) When I start it the engine will run rough and shutter for less than a min, and then run normally.

I have a 2007 prius. I was driving home all a sudden I get a big red triangle warning and the engine logo came on. On the display screen its show a logo of the car at the corner in red with exclamation mark. I use the car obdII scanner but no error code came up. I decide to check the engine oil. When I remove the cap, I notice inside the engine it look weird like a gold color and some blackish. The engine cap inside look like it have stains on it too. The hole where you pour the motor oil down I notice that piece inside don't go down for the funnel to stick in. I attach some pictures. I have no clue what's wrong with it and I don't wanna drive it to make it worse. The prius only have 90k miles on it.

Possible hybrid battery failure in my 2004 Prius (96K miles).
Sunday before last, the check engine light, warning triangle, and hybrid warning light came on when I started my car at the grocery store.
Because I was close to home, I drove home and the car functioned completely normally. The next morning, when I started the car, the same warning lights appeared. However, when I tried starting my car with the headlights off (I always leave them on), no warning lights appeared.
I took my car to an independent mechanic. This is their written report:
"Found multiple check engine codes, P3000, sub code 123, V0100 sub code 211/330. These codes are set when high voltage control detects a malfunction in battery pack/ECU assembly. To check battery pack we took vehicle out on a test drive while monitoring the cells in the battery pack. Found that they are all weak and drop fast when battery is put under a load. Code C2318 is a low voltage error/power supply malfunction code with the auxiliary battery. The voltage spec for setting the code is 9.3 volts, this battery is less than 9.2 volts."
In conversation, the mechanic also told me there was significant voltage variation across the cells in the hybrid battery.
I then took my car to the dealer to try to confirm this analysis. They were unable to read any codes because the independent shop apparently cleared them. The dealer was unable/unwilling to do more than read the codes to diagnose the problem. (Indeed, they seemed surprised that the independent mechanic could monitor the cells in the pack.) All they did was to drive the car around some more to see if the check engine light would come on. It did not.
The car has been driven 80 miles since the warning lights last appeared and appears to be behaving normally. From your perspective, does the report from the independent mechanic make sense and is it believable? And is their test under load definitive of a hybrid battery problem? Could the results be affected by the low auxiliary battery? Also, if I do have a hybrid battery problem, what are the chances of being suddenly thrown into limp mode while driving it?

Stopped at ATM when heard a thump under seat and all the above appeared on control panel. Waiting on computer code reader to test vehicle. Any clues to what all this means. Vehicle 2006 with 101K. Recent service as scheduled with coolant and inverter coolant and belt replacement done. No other issues to date with vehicle.

Bought a new Prius in 2005. In April 2010 (157,000km / 98000m) the triangle and engine icons warning lights came on. After about two weeks in the workshop, I was informed that the main battery went. Two months later (161,000km) the same warning lights came on again. Toyota agents informed me that now it is the water pump not circulating water through the engine. Toyota on its website states that the batteries should last the entire life of the vehicle. Is it possible that battery problem was wrongly diagnosed, and, that in fact, it was the water pump giving the problem in the first place?

Yesterday on my morning commute, the red triangle, brake light and check engine light popped up on my dashboard. After about 10 more minutes of driving I lost a lot of my driving power. The system screen showed that there was no brake regenerating happening. I could hear the battery fan going behind me pretty loud.

When i was driving my 2005 Toyota Prius the Red Triangle, the ((!)) light, the vsc light, and the check engine light came on. I let it sit for sixteen hours without driving it and everything went back to normal. Three days later i was driving and the same lights came on. I let it sit again for sixteen hours without driving and it was still there.
When i was driving i recognized there was a terrible lag, and if i was driving for awhile it took me about one minute to get up to 45 miles an hour. It felt like i was driving in first gear or something.
I also noticed if i had the Heating and air conditioning off that hot air would pump from my back right, which is the seat behind the passenger, that vent was blasting out hot air.
I took it in to toyota and they said the water pump was bad So they replaced it, after replacing it more codes came up and one of them told them to replace the Hybrid Battery Pack which is 3,419 dollars.
I Drove it out of there today thinking that some of the problem was fixed with the lagging of the acceleration and the heating coming from the vents but it was not. I was reading online and everything pointed to the inverter pump where the engine is not being properly cooled, which would explain the excessive heat and the lagging. They claim it still is the battery, but i was watching the battery on the dashboard navigation system and it seems to be driving and recharging fine.

I've got a 2009 Prius with 67k miles on it. The car has a salvage title, but has given me over 20k+ worry free miles. The past few days the car has been acting a bit odd (i'm not sure if these are related or not but I figured I'd just throw it out there as well).... The right front headlight has been on the fritz as well as the wireless door opener has been working sparsely (sometime it wont lock, sometimes it will). I just ran the test to make sure teh 12V battery was okay, and all of the voltages came back in the "normal" range.

Some days ago while I was driving, the check engine, red triangle and vsc lights came on and immediately my car slowed down. It would take longer to accelerate and every once in a while upon getting to a stop sign, it would take long to get to 5 from 0. could this be my hybrid battery going out? My regular scanner can't pull up any codes on a prius.

I have a 1st gen prius. Got the triangle and check engine light which is p3006... I checked the battery all cells are above 7.5. I notice the inverter coolant is low which I'm adding some today. Even tho it was low is it supposed to be moving or is my pump out? i did not see the waves or bubbles at all.

My wife has a '03 that has been great. No issues. I am a excellent mechanic, on conventional cars and motors. Here's my story:
Bought the car used and working last week. Put in a new 12v Group 26 battery w/conversion. I verified the 12v battery was at 12.8v and when engine was running, 13.6v to charge the battery. Car was starting and driving wonderful for about 600 miles. No shuttering, no shaky starts. Mileage was about 38.6. Anyway, yesterday was driving and all of a sudden the warning Triangle comes on, Hybrid system icon comes up and the engine goes off. I was able to drive the car about 1/2 mile on the traction battery back to my work.
It happened to have a code reader handy and it reads a P3125, Inverter. I realize there are sub codes that further diagnose the issue, but I don't have that type of OBDII reader although mine is a very expensive model. Anyway, I reset the code and got the car to start. Motor begins to go up in RPM and throws the code again. I shut it off, reset the code, try to start the car and I feel it slightly jump forward, engine does not start, then throws the warning code again. I did notice the traction battery is at 25%. I do this two more times trying to get the engine to start before I call the tow company. BTW, the car rolled easy, so I don't think its the MG2 is bad, although correct me if i'm wrong but doesn't Mg1 start the engine?
Oh, incidentally, also the ignition key does not release either. The key release solenoid is energized unless I unplug the 12v battery, then I can get my key out.

I was on my way to work this morning when the car just stopped accelerating (or so it felt), all the dash lights came on, I pulled over to the side of the freeway (I was very lucky). Radio and a/c were still working. Powered off, powered on too soon a couple of times - the red triangle and check engine both came on again. Cooled my jets and gave it a few minutes, powered on and the red triangle was gone, but the check engine was still on. Drives perfectly, no problems w/either gas or hybrid engine.

My wife's Prius now has the check engine light, the orange triangle, and the car with the exclamation point lit up. It only has 96,000 miles and hasn't been in a wreck that we know of. I've read that it has to do with the HV ECU, but I don't know much more about it. Is there any chance it's just a loose cable or something simple? It doesn't seem like her car should already be having so many extensive problems all at once. We haven't had any in the past, except the car with the exclamation point came on for a few days and then went away on its own.
Codes: P1636, P3106, P3002, P3006. It's a 2002 Prius

I have a 2001 Prius with 210,000 miles. The inverter and traction battery were replaced last year. I started getting triangle and check engine lights about a month ago and the scan tool read p3191 p3006 p0300. The car would barely start in the mornings and the dash lights would be dim. I replaced the 12v aux battery today and all the symptoms went away. Driving home the triangle/check engine light popped on again and I stopped at Orielly's to use their scan tool. It now only reads P3006. I called a local mechanic who suggested to drive it a bit and clear the codes because the battery needed to equalize. Is this true?

My wife and I own a 2006 Toyota Prius that we bought used 2 years ago. a couple of days ago, the master warning light (red triangle exclamation point) and check engine light came on. I took it into the dealer and of course, our hybrid battery was dead - battery and a new ECU required.
Our car is at 99,000 and 32 days out of warranty. Went down the road to atlanta hybrid repair. they were incredibly nice, and said that my computer was fine, but the battery would need to be replaced.
