View 4 RepliesMy 2005 Prius with 159,000 miles is a daily driver on a 100 mile round trip commute. Since last year, the Prius only does the commute as I now have a delivery vehicle. The car has been mostly trouble free with the exception of hub/bearing replacements, the left drive axle, and routine maintenance. The combination meter fails intermittently in all temperature ranges and is not limited to only cold weather.
Last week the combination meter failed again as I was leaving to replace a HID headlight in a buddy's 05 Prius. The return trip home was the same. Powered the car off and on three times with no change. The next morning, all was back to normal but the engine warning light remained on. This had never happened in the past.
After a week, I brought it down to get the trouble codes read with the OBD II. Results;
C1300: Malfunction in engine control unit caliper front 1
C1253: Hydroboost pump motor relay malfunction caliper front 3
P0456:Evaporative emission control system pressure leak detected - small leak.
I am replacing the coil springs and struts as the left rear coil has recently broken. The plugs and PCV valve have never been changed. I worry that at this point, the threads may very rusted and difficult to remove.
We have owned our Prius since 2011, with no problems, other than the need to replace the 12 volt battery this past fall. Recently the dashboard display was totally dark. Nothing showed- altho the car would run. But then- it wouldn't stop. We called the local dealer who ran thru several options- and finally the car turned off after holding the power button for several seconds. We took it in- and were told it was the KAAR security system, which should be removed. We had that done.
View 5 RepliesFaulty combination meters on the Toyota Prius. Loss of braking and power steering on the vehicle? This has happened to me 4 of the 100+ times my dash lights were not working. On those 4 occasions I was driving without the dash lights and all of the warning lights came on and the car lost power steering and the ABS braking and I had to use the emergency brake to stop. Fortunately when this has happened I have not been on the highway and there was no snow or it could have been very dangerous.
This issue has only happened when there is a malfunction with the combination meter. I understand this can create many issues within the vehicle including braking difficulties. The response of the Manager at my local Toyota shop said "well, at least you have brakes, you just won't have them in an emergency stop." Wow! I've read accounts of people going 65 mph and losing brakes when this has happened which could be very deadly.
I'm surprised at Toyota's response with this possibly deadly issue. I'm also surprised that the Combination Meter Failure has not be recalled because based off what I have read about 3% of Prius owners have experienced issues with this and the braking system. At what point does a "warranty" become a "recall"? Please note that this issue is separate from the "accelerator recall".
Headlight knob: rotated to OFF
Headlight lever: LOWBEAM position
Expected Results: headlights are completely off
Actual results: headlights are completely off (OK)
Headlight knob: rotated to OFF
Headlight lever: pulled into FLASH TO PASS position
Expected Results: highbeams on until lever is released
Actual results: highbeams on until lever is released (OK)
Bought a prius off craigslist that didn't have a hybrid battery. Replaced it with a used reinvolt battery off ebay. Car starts right up now. However, there's a few things wrong with it. I can't get the key out of the ignition and the brakes are soft. Could these be related?
I have a fully charged and known good 12v battery in the car. And when I remove it, the key comes right out. If I bleed the brakes, do you think that will solve the problem?
I thought I would try and resolve this issue while I wait for the battery module to arrive.
I read through all of the past articles relating to my issue with no luck of resolution.
When the car is turned off, the steering wheel never locks. Even when I rock the steering wheel left and right it never locks.
I'm thinking about removing my perfectly functioning HV Battery to inspect it for corrosion and clean if necessary. I read so many posts both here and elsewhere that talk about corrosion being the number one reason Gen I HV Batteries fail. With that in mind, does it make sense to clean the corrosion off the battery (and related components) in an effort to extend the life of the battery.
The car is an '01 with 109,XXX miles, original traction battery, new 12V battery. The car has been very good to me (I believe that's due to steadfast preventative maintenance). There are no error codes and really nothing to complain about.
The only other related post i could find was done in 2004. I am looking for information to install a 2-meter/440 rig in a Prius III? Also type and location of the antenna?
View 5 RepliesI've noticed that occasionally, especially in the mornings when its cooler, my EV light won't come on when I expect it to. I will be driving in the ECO part of the ... well I'm not actually sure what you call that gauge but you know what I'm talking about. Anyway I will feel the car go from ICE to EV and if I see the Car display on the touchscreen it will show all power coming from the battery but for some reason the EV light does not come on above the ECO meter for sometimes up to 30 seconds. This is not a big deal, I'm just curious if this is a common problem.

how do I set the trip A meter to zero.. Instructions in manual are a bit useless
There is no coolant meter! There is only an icon that appears if I'm already over heating.
Kind of a bummer, I would like to monitor this manually but maybe it's not necessary.
Just wondering about the "miles to empty meter", should I disregard it when I have high mpg? (50-60 mpg)
View 6 RepliesI need an explanation of the screen's information when the screen reads for "Trip B." What is the meaning of the MPG? Does it mean the MPG since I reset the Trip B meter?
View 10 RepliesI just had my 2007 Prius serviced. After the service, my car broke down within 10km of the shop. The shop determined that the air flow meter had malfunctioned and wants to charge me about $500 to replace the part. Could the air flow meter have been damaged when the vehicle was being serviced? Specifically, when the air filter was removed and inspected during the servicing. It seems plausible that shop did something to cause the problem.
View 7 RepliesWe've got a 2005 with 110K miles on it and recently the Combo Meter malf'd -- in the space of a couple days, the car didn't want to shut off twice, and once at start-up the instrument panel didn't light up. Since then it has run just fine. Took it to the dealer and they want to replace the combo meter. We never got the "Warranty Enhancement" notice (which has, of course, expired).
View 14 RepliesI have recently noticed that the ODO meter of the car does not work i.e. it is stuck at the reading (57735 km) it was on when I got the car and does not record/show the increase in mileage. the trip A and B are working perfectly fine. I took the car to the local Toyota dealer but he has no clue what is wrong with it, the guy there suggested that ECU is working fine but the ODO meter is damaged and needs replacement.
I am not sure what the guy at the dealership suggested is correct because what i think is that if ODO gets damaged then the whole speedo meter should mal function.
I brought my 2004 Passat 1.8 in for check engine light-- After checking several things and test driving the car they said the finally found the problem-- the "combinations valve" I searched the forum and below was all I found this under that word combo-- is that the only "combination valve"? This is not something I've heard about before-- are they just saying perhaps 2 different valves?
" Turbocharging System, Overview"
For brake booster
10 - Air filter with Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor - G70 -
11 - Pressure control valve for crankshaft housing ventilation
12 - Combination valve
My left turn signal stopped working all together after months of toggling the hazards to get it to work. I attempted to solder the combination relay myself but bridged two contacts together. I guess I didn't do a good job separating them again cause when I plugged it back in, neither signal worked and it must have burnt out the #20 10a fuse cause the heater control had no power, neither did the heated seats. Also found the #26 15a fuse was blown too. But before I replaced the fuses I got a used combination relay I pulled from a jeep at a junk yard (free). Plugged that in (nothing changed) but then replaced the fuses. Heater control and heated seats came back, had hazards but no directionals. Took used relay out and heated that one up to reactivate the solder, plugged it back in and had a left signal but now no right. Tried to reflow the solder second time but still just the left. Dropped $58 on a new relay at the dealer, plugged that in but still no right signal!! I tried other fuses in those to spots I replaced, pulled everyone of the others and checked them, checked the fuses under the hood and still no right.
View 1 RepliesI have a loud rattling coming from my combi valve mainly when I start it up in the morning along with a strong sweet smell. The noise slowly decreases. 2002 Passat 1.8T....
View 1 RepliesSo, I have a 1995 Ford Contour that I purchased in May from it's previous owner.
Within the past couple weeks, I've noticed a combination of sounds coming from under the front of the car, especially on the left side and especially when I slow down and make left turns. I know nothing about cars and I just worry about my car sounding like a sinking ship.
