Prius (2001-03) :: Engine Turns Over While Sitting At Light?

View 7 RepliesI noticed this past weekend that when I stopped at a stop light for a long period of time, the engine would misfire for a split second, random, just miss for a moment, then do the same after 15 or so, sometimes less. Other times, no issue.
View 1 RepliesI am having trouble starting my 2009 camry when the car has been sitting for a while. When I try turning it over I crank it about 4-5 second stop and do it again and the car turns on the second try. When it turns on there is a strong fuel odor. If I punch the gas pedal when cranking it will turn on also. There is no engine light on and battery is good.
View 4 RepliesOnce warmed up, while sitting at a stop in Drive, there is what feels like an engine stumble every so often. Good guess is every 45-60 seconds, so it only happens once, maybe twice at long stops. There is a sudden change in pitch the engine, and the car - for lack of a better term - shudders. The thing I have noticed is that when it does this there is no indication anything has happened with the tachometer - RPMs hold perfectly steady. Additionally, there is no shudder when sitting in park or neutral, only drive.
I initially thought it might be an ignition fault, so when I replaced the balance shaft belt I also replaced the crank sensor. No change in behavior. I did some googling, which suggested the issue might be related to the EGR not closing properly. I changed all the vacuum hoses and removed the switching solenoid to test - it seems to be doing its job. I have not removed or inspected the EGR valve itself. However, because there is no symptom in engine speed and the sensation doesn't happen in park or neutral and only happens when warm, I am starting to suspect the transmission itself is the culprit - I can imagine if the torque converter quickly engaged and disengaged - and a little power made it to the wheels - the same result would happen.
There is nothing else odd about the engine or transmission. No codes. Runs like a top. Transmission always shifts perfectly. Fluid was changed two years ago, about 15,000 miles. What came out looked good as well. I'm okay with replacing EGR components, but I don't want to throw money at the problem unnecessarily. Maybe try driving around with the EGR vacuum hose pinched off or disconnected?
We have an 02 prius 120k that works fine and dandy for the most part (slightly lower mileage then when new - we get 36-40mpg but I think part of that is the lead foot & AC usage) except now we have got the turtle a few times after it sits unused for a few days.
After driving it around for awhile the turtle goes away and doesn't come back. But this has happened a few times, the most recent after it sat in the driveway for 3 days with no activity. When we use it daily this doesn't occur.
Does this sound like the big battery is giving up the ghost after 11 years? Or is there something I can do to make it a happier camper (other then the obvious of paying attention to it daily)?
When I go to crank my car in the morning or after its been sitting for a while... It turns over but won't crank but when I turn it back and immediately crank it again it cranks right up...
View 2 RepliesOver the past week, my engine has stalled numerous times while sitting at a stop light. I simply turn the key and restart the engine and go on my way... until it happens again. FYI - engine is idling between 500 and 600 rpm. I don't know if it's significant or just normal, but when the engine stalls, the red "battery" icon comes on, but goes away as soon as I restart.
In the past few days, I've also noticed my windshield wipers have been very slow, regardless of what position I put the stalk in. Today, there were no engine stalling incidents. However, this morning the wipers were extremely slow when I tested them. Then, this afternoon, everything worked fine! The engine continued to run fine all day and my wipers seem to be back to normal speed!
Does this sound like typical "low left side battery" gremlins, or perhaps the right side "starter" battery? Is it just coincidence that these two symptoms showed up at the same time and are not related? By the way, I believe the left side battery was replaced by the previous owner a year or two ago.
My partner drove the Prius with 54,000 miles to work this morning as he always does. So he is on lunch and sent me a text saying some warning lights appeared on the dash while he was sitting at a red light. I asked if he had any loss of power, if the battery fan was running, he said it drove normally. We bought it last summer with 44,000 miles from a Toyota dealer. They said it had a new inverter pump. It has the original 12v battery however. Though it doesn't act weak at all. No issues this winter at all.
Note, the battery in the photo is at 1 bar. I asked him about it and he said he was driving aggressively to work today, which includes a 2 mile 6% climb he said he made at a high rate of speed... Though after the exit, he has another mile to work.. So the battery should have built itself up before him parking it.
I just installed new front brakes and rotors on my 2004 2.7L AWD, and since then the brake warning light on the dash comes on occasionally. Typically, it will turn on when applying the brakes. Usually for a longer period of time to a stop. (Rolling up to a stop sign/stop light, rather than slowing down for a turn). It will either stay on for about 15 seconds or not go off until I hit the brakes again. My e-brake handle is all the way down.
View 1 RepliesI have a 2001 Toyota Celica gt, and I had a accident on the front of the car. The only things needed to be replaced was the radiator and the Intake manifold. The car wasn't drivable for about 3 months, but within those 3 months I was able to work on replacing the radiator and the intake manifold ( which a crack on it). Now that I finished working on the car, the engine turns on but then it shuts off immediately. Everything was replace properly, I just don't understand.
View 1 Replies2001 F350 7.3L with 140K. Have had it for 7 years and this has never happened. I let the engine warm up (I'm in Cheyoming and it gets cold!). I'll have warm air coming out at all settings (foot, dash, combo, etc) for a few minutes, then the air turns cold!
I've checked the actuator and blend door and they seem to be working properly. The heater hoses going into the firewall are not particularly hot/warm. Is there a valve or thermostat that could be shutting water off to the heater core? Cause that's what it seems is happening. Like starting off in the shower with warm water . . . then someone gradually turns it to cold. Then next time I get in, warm air to cold again!
The odometer light turns on and off (mostly off) and seems to be getting worse. The repair shop I go to said its a dealer item and they usually send them out to a specialized shop, the dealer said replace instrument cluster. I may not be the best but I would like to try a few things before I shell out the money. I read that it may simply be the connections at the Instrument cluster plugin which might just need cleaning, read another fix which involved Pencel soldering, Cold Solders on the instrument clusters circuit board.
View 2 RepliesI have a 2003 Prius that I absolutely love! I have just under 82,000 miles and it only had approximately 95 miles on it when I leased it in Feb. 2003. (I'll never lease again!) So, when the lease matured, I didn't want to part with it and the car's been basically problem free. Just the standard oil changes, tire rotation, replacing tires.
On Friday, June 3rd, my check engine light went on, I immediately pulled over, checked the dipstick, but all was well. I drove carefully/slowly home since according to the manual it states, "take to dealer."
On Monday, June 6th, I took it to the dealer and paid $110 for a diagnostic fee and was told: "You have a malfunctioning sensor in the tailpipe which is stuck in the open position and it will cost $1500 to replace, wish I had better news for you." I asked what would happen, would I still be able to drive home, would the engine blow up, etc. All the service manager said was, "Well, it will affect the performance of the car and the gas mileage."
As of Friday, June 10th, miraculously the check engine light went off by itself and has not come back on. AND it has NOT affected my gas mileage, I'm getting anywhere between 48-50 mpg, which is what I usually get!
today my check engine light turned on. I opened the hood ( Not like I know anything about cars, but doesn't hurt to look for obvious stuff I guess) and there was a bubbling sound. I followed the sound to what I think is the inverter pump? It's like a tank smack dab in the middle and has a pretty thick tube coming out. The liquid inside looked to be bubbling or boiling. Is this normal? I've checked the gas cap and tightened it and restarted it so I don't think that's it. It's at about 160,000 miles.
View 13 RepliesMy son's 2001 Dodge Neon tends to run hot. The radiator fan comes on while the engine is running, but does not stay on when the engine is turned off, even if the temp indicator is in the range where the fan should be on. Wiring diagram looks like the fan control relay only works when the ignition is in ON or RUN, which would indicate that this is the way the electrical system is designed, but that seems weird...I thought the fan is supposed to operate even if the engine is turned off. We have already replace the thermostat.
View 2 RepliesI have a 1st gen prius. Got the triangle and check engine light which is p3006... I checked the battery all cells are above 7.5. I notice the inverter coolant is low which I'm adding some today. Even tho it was low is it supposed to be moving or is my pump out? i did not see the waves or bubbles at all.
View 2 RepliesI just recently purchased a 2001 Prius with 92,000 miles on it and the check engine like comes on frequently. I have a scangauge and I scan for codes and it comes up P0000. I clear the codes the light goes off and everything seems to be ok. I'm not even sure where to start "looking" for something to be wrong.
View 17 RepliesI am getting a 3006,3011,3015 code from my 2001 prius. The car only has 56k miles on it but sat for 8 months without starting or unplugging the batteries. I am wondering if i need to replace bank 1 and 5 on the battery to get the engine light off? The car runs fine and drives great but engine light is on and the triangle exclamation point is on but that's it for lights. What do i need to do? Replace battery altogether? recharge the effected banks?
View 19 Replies I have a 2001 Prius with about 175K miles on it. I was headed to the beach this past Tuesday and had an oil change done right before I left. The trip here from NC to Myrtle Beach was about 200 miles. On the way back today, after I stopped to fill up on gas the 'check engine' light came on for the rest of the trip back home. I went tonight to Autozone and got back all the codes that are P0420, P0300, P0301, P0304, P0440 ....
My question is...Is it possible that all of those codes are somehow the result of my recent oil change? (Oil overflow?, etc.) I've been doing some searching in the archives for those codes and oil/fluid changes appear to be a possibility with all of them.
Just a little background, I've already had the hybrid battery replaced in this car a little more than a year ago. I've had no more warning lights come on since that time until today.
This has been a very good car for us. We've had it since '03 with 30k. Problems have been minimal, till now. The 'check engine' light came on several months ago, and we were unable to afford the repairs. We used it as a 65 miles per day commuter car, mostly at highway speeds. The mileage has dropped off abruptly from the long-term 42 mpg down all the way to 24. There is a nasty vibration on startup. It lasts for maybe 30 seconds and then calms down. We are now at a place where we can do the repairs.
View 19 RepliesDriving down the road I heard a shrinking noise and on comes the red triangle/engine light. The car loses power and limps into a parking lot. I tow the car to my local Toyota dealership and was hit with the bad news. I'm told the transaxle generator has failed and needs to be replaced..... transaxle failure OR a/c compressor failure in disguise?
