Prius (2001-03) :: 2002 - SOC Went Down To 25% And Then To 100% While AC On
Jun 13, 2010
My 2002 Prius recently had an episode where the SOC went down to 25%, and then went all the way to 100%. This seemed to be triggered by being stuck in traffic in about 80º F weather with the A/C on. When SOC was at 25%, there was no response for about a 1/2 second or so when hitting the accelerator, and then the ICE would kick in, lurching the car forward. This seems to indicate that there wasn't enough juice to turn over the electric motor, yet there was never any turtle or any other warning light. The low SOC lasted until I was moving steadily, at which point it went up to 100% It stayed there for maybe another 40-50 miles of driving and finally settled back down to the normal fluctuations of 50% and 75%.

I'm getting low gas mileage (34mpg) on my 2002 Prius. I just changed the hybrid battery with Gen 2 cells. What can the reason for this be? spark plugs? mass air flow sensor?

We purchased a used 2002 Prius from our brother-in-law's family and we're the third owners. The car has around 80K and we've owned it for about a month and a half. Before we picked the car up they took it to a dealer and checked it out. They put a new aux battery in the trunk, changed the oil and gave it the green light. We picked it up in Philadelphia and drove it home to Chicago.
Today my wife was returning from a trip down to Missouri. After a stop for gas and refreshments and just getting back on the interstate the car started to die. The warning lights came on and the battery indicator as well as the red triangle. After sitting a little while she was able to start it again but only made it to the next exit where it officially died and needed to be towed to a dealer just outside of St. Louis. It was 104 degrees out this afternoon and she did have the AC, radio and other necessities running during the trip but she had gone less than 100 miles today before it died.
It sucks to be 300 miles away (I'm home) from the car/dealer not really knowing what they'll find or say they found.

I was at Walmart today and FINALLY remembered to get a couple keys made for my 02 prius. I have been taking somewhat of a gamble considering I only got 1 key when I bought it.
I tried the keys in the trunk. Cha Ching! Unlocked and locked the doors. Cha Ching! Put the key in the ignition and turned it. Cha Ching! Went to start the car and Nothing!!
I could turn the car into accessory and into the run position, but it would not put the car in ready mode. At first, I thought my battery died. I took a deep breath and put the "Toyota" key in and she started right up...

On a long trip from home, my 2002 Prius, 130K miles, threw up an error code, followed by a message that said "error corrected". It did this a few more times, every 5 to 15 miles, until the error stuck. The error message indicated a PS error, which I am guessing means Power Steering, as the power steering went out. Turning the car off and restarting fixed it. I did this a few times.

I own a used 2002 Prius and have only been driving it for about two months. In the last week it has given me some trouble on start up. I turn the key, but the engine will not start. Unlike some of the other comments I've seen here, I'm not getting any warning messages when my car won't start. I turn the key and the dash lights either come on half lit or not at all, the computer screen doesn't light at all when this happens. If I hold the key in the start position for a few (up to twenty seconds) it will eventually turn over and start, but that seems to be draining the big battery and doesn't seem like the best way to start the car. This happens about 2 out of every three times I go to start the car and it doesn't seem to matter how long I've had it parked - could be an hour or overnight. Conversely, it could be sitting for a day and a half and start without issue. All in all, there seems to be no obvious condition that would cause this, and I was curious to know what I should troubleshoot and in what order. As with many people these days, money is scarce and I don't have the money or time to keep it in the shop for a week for diagnostics, especially when it might be something I can easily fix on my own.

I've got a shop in Az. One of my customers has an 02 with 489,000 miles. The problem is when you drive it about 5-10 miles the "red temp" light comes on then it starts to lose power. Pull over and shut it off for about a minute or two then it runs fine for another 5-10 miles. took it to dealer today and they said it needs a trans axle.
My question is why would it need a trans if it runs good until the "red temp" light comes on? Could it be just a sensor? What has gone bad?

I have a 2002 Prius that isn't blowing any heat. During the winter it wasn't blowing cold air so I put some freon in it and it leaked out I guess. So I added another can or two and the a/c stayed cold longer.

I have a 2002 Prius. The car unlocks both from the key in the door and the unlock button on the door but it will not lock. I have tried the lock button on both the driver side and passenger side. I am forced to manually lock each door. Why my car wont lock?

This evening, after not driving my car for a couple of days, I tried to start it and got the check engine light, triangle with exclamation point, and car symbol with exclamation point. It seemed to start, then shuddered and stalled. I was able to get it going by immediately putting it in drive and driving before it had a chance to stall. Then while driving, stepping on the accelerator did nothing- like no gas was getting through yet the car was still moving ahead. I quickly returned home and checked Prius Chat for advice.
I checked the throttle body, which was not stuck, but did see a tiny pool of oil in the bottom. I then started it in the driveway and the tiny pool of oil disappeared and it stayed running. I then took it out for another drive and it ran fine and accelerated normally.
All the warning lights are still on though, and I will try and get the codes read tomorrow or the next day.

I own a 2002 Prius, and I've been avoiding the task of inflating its tires for the last two years (largely because I'm not savvy with car maintenance). So, today I made the rookie mistake of deciding to inflate my tires without first looking up the appropriate tire pressure, etc--I figured the recommended tire pressure would be written on the wheel. I couldn't find the recommended PSI, or at least figure out which numbers corresponded to the tire pressure, nor, how it translated to the pressure bars on the air pump. That said, I inflated all my tires to slightly above 6 bars. Having now looked online, it appears the tires should have been inflated to 3 bars (winter weather conditions here in Ontario).
My problem is, I have to work for a couple hours today. Can my tires survive being pumped beyond its recommended level for a couple hours, so long as I don't drive on it for more than a mile later to get the air pressure readjusted? I have an hour commute home, so I'm worried that my safety might be compromised by the tires being overinflated for a couple hours.
Also, I noticed a chunk out of one of my tires--I hope this isn't additionally problematic.

I picked up a 2002 Prius with 164k, still on original battery. It giving code P3030 which evidently relates to a high voltage line snapped on the bus bar.

I have an '02 with 49,000 original miles. No problems until recently.... warning lights appeared --PS , exclamation and check engine light came on, had reduced acceleration capacity, so I pulled over, shut it off and restarted. Lights still on but continued to drive just fine. After about an hour of driving 2 lane highway, made a "rest" stop, turned off then turned on and NO warning lights!
Next time I went to drive the car several days later, lights were on again, did not go away after 20 min. of in-town driving. The only thing I can think of is that I left a dome light on for several hours, a week ago, before the warning lights incident. Maybe depleted the battery, but the car started just fine right after, so I didn't think there was any problem. Until the warning lights appeared recently.
Could the two be related? What does this tell me? Is my battery a culprit? Can it be re-charged if it is low? I live in a rural area where there are no Prius mechanics... would be nice if I could deal with this myself. Not sure if it has the original batteries.

I pulled the traction battery...remanned it with great success computer very happy with results... drove it for a week. Took it to Walmart to have oil changed... Got in car , started fine...new oil made motor even smoother....then in 200 yards at traffic light , motor died with unusual sound... pulled over and restarted...but would die. Lights all over dash on.
made it back to oil bay...engine would not restart.
pushed inside and would start and then die... then was rattling when dying
checked aux battery with testers , both indicated dead cell 10.25 volts
tried to substitute a new battery via heavy jumpers... got it to start then die..,..then no try at all
I have read forums ,,,that indicate after 3 tries on a dead aux battery , computer will immobilize it
Have tried replacing with a new lawn tractor battery .but seems the car is immobized . Read codes with Mini VCI, and was able to clear all codes but the immobilizer code.

I have an 2002 which I bought new. It's got low millage, just over 92,000. I took it into the dealer for a free state inspection and was told that the water pump is leaking. Given the age I'm not too surprised although I don't know what the reliability is like on that part.
I want to verify myself that the water pump is actually leaking before having it replaced but don't know where it is or what to look for. Googling hasn't been too useful - I get lots of hits about the inverter pump, not the water pump.
I have not seen any signs of leaking on the ground under the car. There was no mention of the water pump leaking when I took it to the dealer at 90,000 for an oil change, with my original service advisor.
Is the water pump something that I can fairly easily inspect? Where do I find it and what do I look for?

I have a 2002 Prius that is in dealer for the death shudder with power steering. Here is issue, they replaced ECU and tell me that the new steering rack must be compatible with ECU? Anyway, I decided to order one online and was wondering if it will work? How can I be sure that part will be compatible with new ECU?

I just purchased a 2002 Prius from a government auction. The car had to be jump started at the auction yard. It ran for awhile and then died before I could put it on the dolly. I jumped it again, load it and towed it home. When I got home I jumped it and drove it off. I tried to charge the 12V battery on a 2 amp current, but it wouldn't charge so I replaced it with a new battery. Now the car won't start at all. Don't worry, I did not reverse polarity at anytime. Here's what is happening now....

I'm headed north in a couple days to the frigid regions of the country and I little worried cause my blower fan is now completely non-functioning (no heat, no defrost ). It came on a couple times since I bought it recently, usually after hitting a bump and stayed on for a while, but now it hasn't come on at all in a while. I checked all the fuses, they all looked good.

CEL, Triangle Displayed for the second time, Engine goes to READY, ICE starts and shuts down when I assume adequate charging is reached. However, OBD2 code thrown is P1636. Drives very well from what I can tell. But she just reported the CEL & Triangle went on again and she feels it is driving rough, like it is struggling.

I read in the owners manual that the engine antifreeze should be an ethylene glycol type. I believe that Prestone makes this type of coolant in a 50/50 mix. Is that correct? Also, what type of coolant does the inverter use? I want to try and stay away from buying it at a dealer. Also, my gen 1 has 117,000 miles and I must admit that I have been slacking with the maintenance. My gas mileage is down to 40/mpg compared to 48-49mpg when I got the car two years back with 40k. I am pretty sure the original auxillary batter is still in it, so I order a new one today. I also plan an changing the transaxle fluid, PCV valve, air filter, and cabin filter. The plugs where changed at 80,000 miles. Where can I order a gasket for the transaxle pan? I intend on dropping it and cleaning it out. Do you think this will get the gas milage back up?
