I'm hearing a sound of closing something coming from the rear passenger side that. the sound comes randomly many times while driving. it doesn't come when parked. it sounds like the automatic antenna that is on 1995 Accords that closes and opens. is that the vent? also, do all prius's have that sound? is there something wrong with my prius?
View 8 RepliesI think I'm becoming an automotive hypochondriac ever since I started owning this car...I was sitting at a light the other day and all of sudden I heard a faint sound coming from what seemed to be the passenger side rear of the car. It sounded like a ticking clock or a heart beat...it was some what faint, but still noticeable. It is intermittent though and has no particulars when it happens and seems to go away when I begin to drive off... Fuel pump? Gremlins?
View 3 RepliesAlright, so it could be something very common and in proper operation, but I can't guess what it might be. Whenever I turn my car off, I notice a mechanized buzzing sound coming from the passenger side rear wheel well. Probably no coincidence that the fuel nozzle/inlet sits just above the wheel well. Sound is not very loud, but quite noticeable when standing next to the car in my closed garage. Seems to last for 5 to 10 minutes, then shuts off. BTW, it's a 2012 3.6L SE with Nav.
View 6 RepliesI've just bought a 1996 celica GT. It has very low mileage and is in great general shape for it's age. There is one thing that annoys me and it's a clicking sound coming from the rear passenger side wheel when going over bumps (I hear it a low speeds as tire noise take over after I guess). I was wondering if I should be looking for different signs when I jack it up? Worn bushings? And is there a way to reproduce the sound. I've read about the rear bushing being a problem on these cars... is it true?
View 5 RepliesI replaced my rear brake pads this weekend. I used oem pads and used the shims with CRC lubricant. I also compressed the brake calipers and made room for the new pads. I also tried to take off one of the rotors but it would not come off even with putting screws in the rotor.
Everything seemed fine and brakes were strong but when I went for a test drove there is a clicking sound at low to medium speeds come from the rear passenger side. I checked the retainer pins and they are on correctly.
What the problem may be? I would like to spin the wheel but the parking brake is on. Is it okay to take off the parking brake while jacked up if I block the wheels??
We have a 2010 Prius Type 5 with about 18K miles. I've noticed at times that after having parked the car in the garage for several hours, that there is a soft "whirring" sound on the passenger side rear of the car. I'm assuming this is the battery fan, because it sounds like a fan and I can't think of anything else back there that would make a "fan"-like sound? Is there any other device back there that could make a "fan"-like sound while parked (it's cold weather here, so it's probably around 40 deg. F or less in the garage)? It makes this noise for 5-10 min. and then stops. If this is the battery fan, why would it run when the car is cold?
View 15 RepliesSo, last week I got my transmission replaced and they also had to replace the CV axle because it was damaged beyond repair when the Transmission self-distructed. They drove it after all the repairs and said it was driving fine, just that it had a belt squeak.
On my way home (30 min drive) about 10 minutes in, still in the city, my brakes start making a grinding noise and sort of a thump thump thump when I brake which sounds like its coming from the passenger side front, it makes me really nervous. It doesn't sound like any brake grindy noise Ive ever heard before and it wasn't making any brake noises before it broke down. (On a side note: it also made a weird noise maybe the first 3 times I drove it after getting it back and I turned the wheel hard to back out of a parking space, that used to be when I heard the belt squeak but I haven't made it squeak since I got the car back.)
Everyone I talked to said it sounded like it needed new pads so tonight I bought new brake pads and rotors for the front and got everything taken apart. The rotors didn't look bad at all, just some light surface scratches, nothing deep, no warping I could see, and the brake pads look almost brand new. I did notice that the inside brake pad on the passenger side was missing its little metal plate that is usually between the caliper and the pad, so I went ahead and replaced all of the brake pads hoping this lost metal plate was the issue.
I also turned the rotor by hand on each side while the brake pads were off and the only difference I could notice was when turning the passenger side one it made a little more noise almost like it was loose.
I got everything put back together and drove around the neighborhood with my boyfriend in the car to listen, the grinding noise was gone and it seemed to brake really well (never got above 30 mph.) However, on my way to return the rotors to advanced auto (45-50 mph) it started making the thump thump thump noise but without the grinding, still on the passenger side. I can feel it in the gas pedal and now it not only happens when I'm braking, but also any time I let my foot off the gas pedal. The only time I dont feel/hear it is when I'm accelerating.
Mine is 2010 gen 3 Prius. I bought it brand new and about 6,500 miles. From the beginning, I sometimes hear a grinding and rattling sound coming from the right passenger side. It is not from plastics. It is mechanical sound. But the problem is it does not happen all the time. So we were hesitant to go to dealer because they will never find it. But it got more frequent with cold weather.
Now, it does make rasping buzzing sound like a loose fan usually after I start a car in the morning and the heater is kicked in. I don't think it has something to do with fan because if I just run it itself in high speed, you cannot hear it. It is just some bad combination that makes this sound that makes you go crazy.
We are afraid that something big will happen after the warranty is over but as we expected the dealer said they do not hear the sound. The sound comes out in low accelerating and disappears in high accelerating. Now I really regret having bought Hybrid. It looks like the dealershop has no clue where to look at. I think the sound gets worse with the cold weather.
I seem to be getting a creaking noise (the same sound you get when you lean on the armrest) coming from the passenger side rear. It sounds like it is coming from the hatch, but I can't quite narrow it down. The creaking noise appears when I drive slowly over bumps.

It almost sounds like an AC compressor issue (had the same problem with my F-250) but there is also an accompanying "gurgling" sound as well. AC problems with the Gen 2 after 160,000 miles?
View 7 RepliesI've been noticing "Hissing Noise" coming from the rear passenger side (rear right hand side) of my 2011 Prius for a few days now. It sounds like the hissing noise is coming from the vent that's located on that side. Not sure what that does, but the hissing noise is usually present when I'm driving at 10MPH or up and it's gone when I'm less than 10MPH or at a complete stop. I have about 32K miles on the car.

View 8 RepliesI recently changed the plugs on my 95 Aerostar 4.0L. I noticed the last service person did not replace with proper plugs. The van was missing occasionally.
The passenger side rear plug was rusty. I noticed a small loss of anti-freeze during the past year also. Could this be a lower intake gasket? Have not noticed any anti-freeze in the oil nor any exterior engine leaks.
I recently drove it for 150 miles. Sometimes after start it would miss, other times not. Looking for the type of diagnostic to be done.
Yeah so on the way to the UCLA game last night, after the car warmed up, I started hearing a whoop sound coming from the back I thing. This is the second time I heard it doing this in the month I've owned it. It happened under some acceleration and sounded a bit like the beginning of a police siren. Not every time though.

View 8 RepliesI had to replace 2 tires on my Camry recently and Discount Tire put the new tires in the back and the old tires in the front. After all was done, I drove off and there was a knocking noise coming from the passenger rear.
The front steel wheel was pretty beat up so it was making the steering wheel shake. Discount put that wheel in the back. They had recommended replacing the wheel. I picked up a new one from a pick and pull and its still making the knocking sound.
I went through the car's interior to try and eliminate anything rattling around making the noise. Checked the trunk and there was nothing that I could think it would be.
It knocks at low speeds from 5 mph all the way up to 40 mph. But once I get to 50 and over on the highway the sound goes completely away. The car does not ride rough or shakes when the sound is present.
Started a month ago. Whenever I go over a bump, steep incline, or even just turn right (not left) the car makes this creaking, almost groaning, sound from the right rear.
Hard to isolate it since when I push down on the right rear from the outside I can't hear anything. Gonna head into the dealership to see what they think this week but it's always a fight trying to get them to do in warranty service .
The sound is coming from the front passenger side. The noise gets louder the faster I go, put in neutal and noise still there press brake noise there turn wheel no change in pitch. Jacked it up and there's no play in wheel. Just changed both front wheel bearings 6 months ago.
Just changes all brakes today and got all new tires today. I'm thinking maybe the differential bearing but not sure and if so how to change it. I travel from Mississippi to Baton Rouge, LA everyday for work, about 240 miles round trip. What would happen if a bearing went out while driving 70 mph on interstate.
