Recently I noticed that my car is whining when I'm driving. It occurs while I'm in gear driving, not only when I'm turning. I can also hear it when I'm not accelerating and I'm coasting. The only time I don't hear it is when the car is idle or in park.
2002 Pontiac Grand Prix with about 152k miles on it
Got a 2002 GT with the NA 3.8 and 150,000 miles. The car has pretty much sat for the past 6 months, driven very sparingly. If it's been sitting for a while (like over night or longer) it will start no problem. If I turn the car off for a shorter period, it will crank but not fire. It will start only if I pump the gas as I'm turning the ignition.
In addition, on occasions it has died while at idle or coasting to a stoplight. After it dies it will fire back up no problem.
Fuel problem perhaps?
The "Service Engine Soon" light has been on for about a month before it started acting up. I had the codes checked at AutoZone and it came up with P0442 and P0128.
Hottest day ever on Planet Earth and my air conditioner in my Pontiac decides to throw hot air in my face! Luckily, for my female companion, she gets ice cold air. This 2002 Grand Prix 40th Anniversary edition has 236,000 miles, I never once had a problem with the air conditioner in the past (have thought about contacting GM asking what they did right in this car)This model has dual climate control. I noticed that in turning the selector knob on the dash climate control panel, there is hot air in the vent, bi-level, heater and defrost, but cold air comes out on the passenger side. The interior temperature functions are all similar on the '97 through '03 models of Grand Prix, just wondered if this is something I can fix, or do I need to visit a Pontiac dealer to have it diagnosed (and spend a lot of money)
View 3 RepliesMy 2002 Grand Prix jerks when shifting. It originally happened earlier in the spring but fixed itself after I had a coolant leak fixed. Now it's happening again. The coolant and ATF levels look okay. I found one possible fix on Google but wanted to get some other opinions first. What's wrong, or how urgent it is? Is this something I might be able to fix myself without a lot of trouble?

I've noticed that I've been getting pretty bad gas mileage lately, and after driving my car for like 15 min, the engine light will come on, and my engine/transmission will shutter like its going over a road trip while its either downshifting or upshifting into 1st gear it seems. Then once I turn my car off, if I turn it back on the engine light will be gone (until I drive it for 10 minutes or so again), but it will still have the shutter. The fluids are full. The car has a little over 200,000 miles. It is the 4 speed auto tranny, 3.1 L v6. We had a newer engine put in about 50,000 miles ago. The tranny fluid looks good, and the oil looks OK, needs a change in about 400 miles. Been up to date on maintenance as far as tune ups, and fluid changes.
View 4 RepliesI just got a new car three weeks ago and I'm trying to sell my 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix GT myself. Since buying this new car, I haven't driven the Pontiac for 3 weeks. I started it tonight and it started just fine but when I started driving, I heard a clunking noise coming from the front end. I checked the wheels and didn't see anything (though I didn't check too thoroughly). It's definitely the front end. The car has about 158,000 miles on it and before I stopped driving it, it had no issues and did not have this clunking sound. I tried leaving the car running for 5 minutes at a time and then turning it off and then on again thinking it might be that I've just left it sit there but that didn't work.
View 7 RepliesTurning on headlights cuts engine. Sometimes won't start at all even with lights off. All dash lights go out as well. I.e. when auxiliary is on only radio works, turning on headlights shuts off radio. Recently got a used alternator. Could not find any issues pertaining to the alternator. New battery as well.
View 3 RepliesThe car runs fine for several miles/minutes, suddenly the tach starts to climb, up a jump, then up again. This is when the engine starts to run really rough and I pull off the road, let the car cool down and make it the rest of the way to work (about 15 miles).
Here is what I have done: Radiator flush and fill; Oil and filter change; Cleaned EGR and replaced gasket; put in new spark plugs; changed the transmission filter and oil; replaced the O2 upstream and downstream sensors; replaced the thermostat 195 to 180; replace the coolant temp sensor.
The check engine light does not come on (except on start-up check sequence), so it is working. Their are no trouble codes (other than when I removed the downstream O2 sensor to check if I would get errors). The cat converter doesn't glow at night, and doesn't rattle when tapped. The resonator in the exhaust does make a rattling sound, but I don't see why that would be the problem.
I am at my wits end. Any clue what I should try next? The water pump isn't leaking.
I have a 2003 grand prix. Sometimes when i am completely stopped at a light, then put my foot on the accelerator as it turns green, the engine will start accelerating but the car wont move for a second. It then jumps forward in a frightening way. It feels like the brakes don't completely disengage or maybe a belt is slipping. I also notice when I am driving and take my foot off the gas for a second and put it back on the RPMs will jump up about 1000. Im not an aggressive driver or anything at all.
View 8 RepliesOk here's the problem. I have a 2003 grand prix se 3.1 and a 1998 grand prix gtp series II sc. Both have the exact same problem running and both had overheating issues prior to. I can start either one on a given day while cold and drive them as if nothing is wrong. But soon as either one hits operating temp, I start to hear what sounds like a rattling or sputtering like sound from under the hood, accompanied with a sudden loss of power and then the engine shuts off. Now yesterday I attempted further diagnostics with the se model GP. I let it idle rather than driving it this time, and it ran perfectly fine for about 20 mins, started to make the aforementioned noise, I revved the engine to about 2000 rpm and it kept it from cutting off and smoothed, but the second I let up, it was off and wouldn't restart till it was cooled off. Same goes for the gtp. I'm really stumped on this one.
View 3 RepliesEngine starts then runs for a period of time until it warms up, then fans come on and then EGR clicks on and off every other second , then it eventually quits. Replaced the coolant temp sensor. And it never sets a code. Have checked wiring for shorts and nothing. Is it a ECM going bad?? When trying to drive it , it will only go about a half a block , then quits , Then will start up again.???

I just got new struts, brakes, rotors etc on my 95 grand prix. A few weeks later my ABS light went on.... Do I have to get it fixed right away?
View 11 RepliesI got my car from an auction and I apparently had to do work to it and we got most problems fixed but now when i saw my fuse box i saw their wasn't a fuse in the radio so i put on in there and it can on so I thought cool it works so i turned my car off and the radio stayed on and i thought, bad fuse so i got a new fuse put it in and my car was still off and the radio stayed on. So i can't have a radio because my battery will drain. The ignition works i got a new one installed it perfectly my car is a 2000 Pontiac grandprix gtp supercharged. I've only had it for about 3 weeks ...

View 2 RepliesCode is for tcc stuck on. Code p0741 is tcc stuck off. So, it's a sticky solenoid. Which means it may start out sticking occasionally and progress to sticking more often and finally staying on/off permanently? If u get the code/symptoms 1 time, does it usually mean it will happen again, soon?

It does not vibrate when I turn left. I have new balanced tires, replaced both front tie-rod ends, and the rack and pinion by a certified GMC mechanic. What could be the problem?
View 1 RepliesWe were driving home yesterday and all of the sudden the car started to over heat and we could smell antifreeze. We turned the ac off and put more water in it. Today we just had to make a short trip somewhere (we were planning on having it looked at first thing Monday morning). The temperature gauge never showed it overheating but as we pulled into our driveway we heard a knocking sound and it just shut off. Iit may just be a leak and it caused the car to over heat??

View 5 RepliesWe have a grand prix and had the water pump replaced. Soon after this the fuel pump went out. We replaced it 2 more times within a few weeks. Bought another one and this time the car may have run a period of 4 to 5 months before it went out. We have found by banging on the gas tank, and by turning the car on while someone bangs on it, you can hear the pump come on and start the car. Well, once again this week we have had the pump changed and I was about to leave work and the car would not start. Banging on the tank allowed me to be able to start the car... What is going on with the pumps or what is making them go out...???

View 12 RepliesI took of the handle panel on the exterior of the car to adjust the rod so the door would open easier. NOW THE DOOR WONT OPEN AT ALL!
Its a 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix SE.
I've tried removing the door panel from the inside, but it seems useless because the retarded vertical handles cant even be accessed from the door panel.
