Pontiac - G6 :: 2005 - Noise Coming From The Steering?
Aug 18, 2013
My son has a 05 Pontiac g6 that has been making a lot of noise coming from the steering he thinks. I haven't had a chance to hear or look at it, but I was wondering whats the worst case scenario gonna cost. I guess it has electric power steering instead of conventional. I know nothing about these. It has 158000 miles on it if that matters.

I know the whining is coming from the steering pump. Does that mean its going out? the wheels and the steering turn fine... not hard to turn or anything. My daughter is getting this car tomorrow. and i want to make sure nothing is really wrong with the car. it has been sitting outside under deck for over 1 year. i had to pump up the tires, other then that... she started right over no prob. never had the whine before... Looked in the resevoir and looks fine... a little over 1/2 full.

I've been hearing a rhythmic, metallic ringy grinding noise coming from the driver side front end of the car that seems to be in time with wheel rotation. It happens between 5 and 40mph, worsens while the steering wheel is turned even the slightest to the right, goes away completely during left turns, reduces and becomes intermittent above 45mph, and between 0 and 5mph, as I turn the wheel to the right from any position, I hear squeaking. I recently had the front control arm, ball joints and struts replaced. It has 140k miles. What could it be?

This car has a V6 engine with 50000 miles. Nearly every time you turn the steering wheel you hear a clunk sounding noise. This has been going on for quite some time now. A mechanic said this is a common problem with this car. 2008 Pontiac G6....

I've had a noise coming from my rear end since I got the car and usually it stayed consistently bad. A year or more ago (I barely ever drive this car) I had the fluid changed in the differential, and that made the noise significantly better barely noticeable at all. Now, however, the noise is back and seemingly worse than ever. It's a low pitched grumbling noise almost a grinding and really only does it when I reverse or am turning one way or the other. Since this is such a high performance car, I'm worried the rear end is just going to blow out on me one day. What might be going on and what's causing the noise? Also, there's no play In the drive shaft for it to be a U-joint or anything.

A sudden new noise heard from under the hood of my car!I have determined The noise is definitely coming from the AC compressor. I can hear it when I lift the hood. The noise stops when the AC is turned off and starts when the AC switch is activated. I'm not certain if it is a bearing or one of the pistons inside? Interesting is that there are moments that when the A/C is turned on, all is well, no noise and their is refrigerated air coming from the vents inside. But a mile or so down the road, the noise starts.
Also, once the noise starts, there is a tremendous load on the gas engine and the car has great difficulty getting to 35 mph. The engine is a V6. the car is a SE model. There are Few bells and whistles. There is 200,000+ miles on the car. I don't think it is a low freon issue, for is there not a built in safety that keeps the A/C clutch from engaging if freon ( or 134A in my case) is low? and when the unit does work, there is plenty of cold air. I don't think it is low oil in the compressor, as that would indicate a leak in the system , would it not?
Could I or am I , be looking at replacing the compressor?Which will mean having to suck down the system, correct? and anything else I have not thought of that will be involved?

I have a 2008 Pontiac G6 GT. I loved my card until I had to replace the rotors and changed to an all-weather tire. Now, I can feel a vibration in the steering column; a vibration in the seat and floor; there is a noise in the front of the engine when I am going over bumpy or icy roads; and the car pulls to the left when I have been stopped at a light or an intersection. Oh - When re-starting on a slightly icy or gravel-y road, I also get a sound that sounds like gears grinding -- not like the traction control is kicking in.Frustratingly enough -- the car can go from feeling like it is driving "tight" -- like the power steering is out -- to driving "loose" like the steering wheel is ready to fall off the car and vibrates like it never has before. No one notices the vibration but me (which is frustrating because I have driven my car over 30,000 miles, and what seems "normal" to others, is not "normal" to me).

All of a sudden I am hearing a quiet whoop, whoop, whoop everytime I turn my steering wheel either way. Could that be the bushings wearing out? If so, what must I do?

I just got a new car three weeks ago and I'm trying to sell my 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix GT myself. Since buying this new car, I haven't driven the Pontiac for 3 weeks. I started it tonight and it started just fine but when I started driving, I heard a clunking noise coming from the front end. I checked the wheels and didn't see anything (though I didn't check too thoroughly). It's definitely the front end. The car has about 158,000 miles on it and before I stopped driving it, it had no issues and did not have this clunking sound. I tried leaving the car running for 5 minutes at a time and then turning it off and then on again thinking it might be that I've just left it sit there but that didn't work.

My 2005 Pontiac Vibe started spontaneously making a strange ticking noise after a grocery run. It's loud, and doesn't accelerate in time with the engine, so we have ruled out fan for now. It sounds like it's coming from almost directly behind the radio console and has the speed and timbre of a fast, old-fashioned tick tock metronome. My dad took a look at it and thought it might have to do with the air filter--a lot of awful junk fell out of it, and I have a new filter, but the ticking noise still persists. He found out that if I switch to recirculate / inside air, the ticking goes away, but as soon as I switch it off, it comes back.
Dad thinks it's a door trying to close, but he's not sure which one or where. Since it goes away with the inside air button, if it costs a fortune to fix, I might just stick with inside air from now on.

I have a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am with about 160K miles on it. Over the last month or two I have noticed a persistent ticking noise coming from inside the engine compartment. It sounds like it might increase in frequency along with the engine speed. It is loudest when I pull up in a drive-thru or next to another car and roll down my window. It is audible when sitting or while moving. Doesn't seem to make a difference if the car is hot or cold. I checked the oil and it appears to be full. It sounds like it's coming directly out of the engine block itself. I get the oil changed every 3,000 miles like clockwork.

After replacing my brake pads and shoes I am hearing a squealing noise coming from the area near my brake pedal. This noise sometimes becomes high pitched if I depress the brake too hard. I am also losing a little bit of brake fluid if I depress the pedal hard several times. The brakes themselves function fine and have no problem stopping. When I bled the brakes today some of the fluid was black. I figured it might be air in the system but after bleeding them it is still happening. I also replaced the bleeder screws.

There is a strange rubbing sort of noise coming from the front end. I hear it when I take my foot off the accelerator and/or when I turn the steering wheel to the left. To me it sounds like it's coming from the passenger side of the front end, but I could be wrong. The most recent work done to the vehicle was the brakes, about a month or two ago.

We've had a few cold mornings here in NY, especially at the time I leave the house where it's 10-15 degrees. I started the engine on these cold mornings. However, whether I warm her up or not I get a squealing noise from what I believe to be the steering. If I move the steering wheel (the first time it happened I was getting in and shifted the steering wheel), I get a very high pitched squeal. Once I've driven her a few minutes, the squealing disappears. But it doesn't matter how long the car has been running before I drive, I always get the noise on cold mornings. If it's warmer, no noise. This is my first winter with her, so I don't know what's normal and what's not.

Today a creaking noise suddenly developed coming from the steering wheel when turning left at slow speeds. I only have 600 miles on the Tiguan, so was a little surprised to hear this so soon. I have found many others with similar problems on VWs through Google... the problem seems to range from coil springs to tie rod ends. I am hoping that this is just a freak occurrence, but am taking it in tomorrow.
It sounds like "creaking" as if you were shutting a door that needs WD40. That's the best way to explain it.

On my 2005 with 234k miles on it the engine has a bit of a piston slap. Its not severe but the noise is there and I have been trying a few different 5w30 oils to try and quiet the noise a bit. I have found some better than others but since its time for an oil change again I am considering bumping up in viscosity and giving a 40 weight oil a try to see if a little heavier oil might work for it out a bit.

This started several months ago. I can feel it in steering wheel & gas pedal. I thought it was the tires so I put 2 new tires on front, but no change.Tires had no unusual wear. Happens at any speed, worse around curves, left or right. Worse when temp is colder, 55 degrees, better at 75 degrees. Not affected by braking or in coasting neutral. No problem with steering or pulling.

When to the dealer today. There is a noise coming from the steering rack on my new Sonata 2009 2.4l. I made a short video to show it to the mechanic with the rattle sound coming from the steering rack. He pulled the car on a hoist and confirmed car need a new steering rack.
