Phaeton :: Quirky Steering Wheel Retract When Turn Off The Car?
Feb 14, 2008
- If I turn off the car with the door closed, it starts to retract but stops as soon as I open the door.
- If I turn off the car with the door open, it retracts all the way.
Why does it do this? My routine is to take out the keys then open the door, and it always results in the steering wheel about half way retracted.

I recently just purchased a 97 celica st limited edition. I am in love with everything about it except one thing. The seat belts only retract when I turn the car off.... As long as the car is running the seat belts will not retract at all. Once I turn it off the seat belt instantly pulls tight. I'm at a loss and have tried searching online but have not found anything.

At 50-70mph I get vibrations through the steering wheel as it bubbles badly, from research on the forum it seems like a bad control arm?

I have a 2006 Kia Rio base sedan. I've owned it from 55K miles to 70.5K miles. It does not have power steering.
When moving at rather slow speeds, maybe 0-15 or so mph, it seems that bumps or potholes or other irregularities will cause the steering wheel to turn significantly. I feel the steering wheel move back and forth by itself and the wheels feel like they "flop" to either direction to the whim of the road's irregularities if that makes sense. The wheel feels almost as if someone is grabbing it and moving it back and forth. The movement is forceful enough that if I'm not holding the wheel, the car can really wander around, possibly into another lane but I have not wanted to test that.
I tried looking up this issue on existing threads but couldn't find it. Also, I didn't really know what to call it. I had an apparently useless alignment at Firestone about a week ago (car still pulls to the right) which did not seem to affect the issue. I attached a scan of the alignment sheet thing.
Incidentally, it seems like they left a thing out of spec but maybe that's a whole other question. So, what could cause this and whether it can lead to damage or safety hazards?

My year 11 3L V6 Phaeton has the heated steering wheel button fitted on the right side return of the wheel centre hub and it indeed does press in as though there is a switch there, but the wheel never gets warm and no lights/symbols come up on the console.
I guess the simple question is: Do VW fit these switched even if the option is not installed? I've taken a photo of the options sheet from the manual, at the link below: need to decipher some of these codes, that would be good too.

I notice that I have the steering wheel heater button on my 2006 V8. I pressed it, but the indication light did not come up on the display, and the wheel did not get warm.

I got my Phaeton, certified pre-owned, at 23k miles. Until 45k the brakes were flawless. Steering felt solid, no vibration or feeling of shaking of any kind when the brakes were depressed.
At 45k, I got the telltale "squeak" while depressing the brakes. I took the car in, was recommended to replace all corners, pads and rotors. The replace brakes message did not appear but I was pretty sure it was coming.
So I performed the recommended service at my local, Phaeton certified, VW dealer.
Here I am, 4k miles later, I am getting a vibration in the wheel while pressing the brakes. It seems to have gotten worse from 3k to 4k post-service. Also I hear and feel a "rubbing" noise while reversing that seems to respond to the brake pedal. Almost as if the brakes are engaged while reversing even while I'm not pressing the pedal.
I've had several other cars with warped rotors and the vibration in the wheel would lead me to believe that may be the case here. In my other cars this has only gotten worse with time. So I am contemplating discussing with the service manager to see what can be done. I drive the Phaeton quite gently, not aggressive at all.

I have just managed to remove my scratched steering wheel badge on my phaeton. It comprises two parts, the metal holder and a thin metal badge which is glued on. (if you look closely you should be able to see the edge of the badge)
I used a small screwdriver to deeply score the badge many times, then once through, the badge can be prised off with a pair of plyers!! I the cleaned the glue from the surface using nail polish remover and am now awaiting a 50mm stick on VW badge from eBay. Hope it looks good..

My Phaeton has pretty audible whine when turning the steering wheel. Closer to lock- the louder the noise. Can I check the fluid myself or is this going to become a trip to the dealer?

(2006 Phaeton) When driving down road car glides to right when releasing steering wheel. Dealership performed alignment and all checks out good. Has 2 makes of tires on each axle and they mentioned previous owner had directional tires going in wrong direction. Is it the tires?

My W12 Steering wheel seems to no longer adjust in the up/down range when I use the button on the side of the steering column. It does move in/out. Is there a way to reinitialize or calibrate the steering wheel.

I have a question regarding the HUD display and the steering wheel audio controls. According to the manual there should be a audi menu in the HUD control by the steering wheel controls. I don't seem to see one? I have the upgraded audio with digital. I checked the TOC and can't seem to find anything about this. Am I missing something?

So the saga of getting my 2006 Phaeton fixed after an interaction with a deer continues ..... The car has been put back together and fixed, but now there is a new warning light linked to the steering wheel angle sensor.

Does the 'easy entry' function on your Phaeton only cause the steering wheel to move up and down, or, does it cause the steering wheel to move up and down and the driver seat to slide back and forward? My understanding is that both actions should take place - wheel up and seat back (or vice-versa), but I can only ever recall seeing the steering wheel of my car move up.

Just when I thought I understood how to use all the controls on the 2006 V8 Phaeton I got two weeks ago, the steering wheel has thrown me a curve.
I have pressed the button on the column that makes the wheel move back when I turn off the car so its easier to get out, then it moves back to the set position when I start the car again. But for some reason, it moves back, but no longer moves forward to the set position when I start the car again. Have I done something by accident to change this function?

Had my 2004 Phaeton in to take care of some smaller interior issues under warranty. One of them was that the steering column makes a groaning noise when it is being retracted. Service advisor told me that the Phaeton technician (who is also the shop foreman - Jim Ellis VW Marietta) told him that this is common with Phaetons and there isn't a realistic fix for it. I've read the post already about the felt strip wearing down, but I'm wondering how many of you have the steering column groaning noise when it's being retracted when the car is shut off? I'm trying to decide whether to push the issue with the dealer or just live with it.

I just noticed 2 small puddles under the car tonight. They are in the center left to right, and about even with the steering wheel (front to back). They appear to be water, but I was just wondering if this is the normal a/c discharge, or something else?

For some reason this more there is no sound coming out of my car. This includes phone, radio everything. Also the volume control on the steering wheel seems to be frozen, it does nothing when you hit up or down.

My steering wheel, when pulling away or towards me (reach) is juddery/squeaky. I think its the 'rubber bead/dust seal' under the instrument binnacle rubbing on the plastic steering column shroud as it moves in and out. It works and doesn't sound slow and the motor does not sound under strain, its just noisy as the shroud does not run smoothly against the 'rubber bead'.
Up and down (rake) is quiet.
To lubricate the plastic is silicone lubrication spray the way to go? Or is there another lubricant and/or quick & easy way to get it to not squeak.
Its not a big deal, but it would be nice to have it working properly when I get in and out.

Is there any quick fix for this? My steering wheel is slightly turned when the wheels are pointing straight. I thought a wheel alignment would fix this, but it didn't.

The electric motor which adjusts the steering wheel position has begun to "rumble"--When I enter the car (keyless entry) and the wheel begins to assume it's pre-set position, a loud grumbling noise occurs. If I then use the switch to readjust the position, I again hear the noise. Is there a way to lubricate the steering wheel (WD-40?) without causing other problems?
