Phaeton :: Purpose Of The Plastic Air Scoops Under Oil Sump?
Aug 26, 2010
Yesterday I was adding some pressure in the tires and I found that the plastic cover under the oil sump is loose on the driver's side and the driver side air scoop (not the brake cooler scoop) is missing. I know it was the guy who changed the oil last time, probably 7 bolts where missing. I went under the car and fit some bolts from my tool box to secure the plastic plate. I was asking myself what do these scoops do? Are they an aerodynamic stuff or coolers to the transmission? Or something else?

How to remove the plastic engine cover that covers the engine? I'm know some of them are just held in place with friction plugs and only require a good tug, but I've thought that about other things in the past which have resulted in expensive noises.

The twin bottle holder sump in the trunk of my 2003 Camry takes on a few inches of water after driving through heavy rains. All other parts of the trunk, carpet, spare tire well, etc., always remain bone dry and I cannot figure out where the water is coming in. There is no sign of water coming in through the lid seal and the seal itself is unbroken and pliable. There is the seal mark uniformly minted across the sealing surface of the trunk lid.
There is something of a gap in the body right in front of the sump if you peel back the floor covering, but I can't see light through it. The sump itself, when it's dry, shows no signs of cracks or leakage. I do not actually store water or any other liquids in the sump. Actually, because it takes on water, I don't store anything in the sump. It seems easy enough to replace the bottle sump, but I'm a little reluctant to do so until I can figure out exactly where it's coming from.

That MPH average at the bottom right of the screen. Is that actually show the average miles per hour that you have driven? Mine is currently displaying 24. I never drive that slowly, much less often enough to average out my usual 55-70 driving. What is the purpose of that display?

What is the secondary electric fan behind the radiator for? I never see mine running.

I don't know the official name, but it's right above the high beams, it stays lit if you just have your side lights on too. BTW, what's the purpose of it since we really don't have DRL's?
Modifying it with a different bulb, if so what's the size? Same ones as the interior map lights?

I pulled my air filter for inspection last weekend. The 6.7L airbox is segmented into two parts - One part is very large and contains the pleated paper air filter, as well as the air intake in the base. The other part is small and contains a half-section of the pleated filter, with a fine foam filter below. However, the foam extends out through a sizable hole in the bottom of the small compartment and runs down outside of the box nearly to the base of the entire air box (held on by some plastic straps).
What is the purpose of the foam and "secondary" air intake? Why not simply use one compartment with the paper air filter?

Was servicing my vehicle today and this tube snapped in half. Called ford, dont have it since its an 'obsolete' legacy part.
Tried 1aauto, rock auto, both dont have it.
Am I out of luck? is there an alternative? can I just use a rubber hose instead to connect the pcv valve to the other end part?

I got a CEL this morning and the car was driving rough, tach bouncing at idle so I popped the hood and the plastic funnel that the oil cap screws into was completely broken off from the top of the engine. I was picking little slivers of plastic from it out of the hole in the pic. Fortunately the oil cap actually screwed into the spot where the plastic cylinder had broken out of. Not sure if that's by design but it worked and the car drove ok after.

I heard some scraping under my car and pulled over to check it out and the plastic piece under the car was hanging down. I took it off all the way so it wouldn't get damaged any more, and took it to the dealer. The piece was torn off in almost a perfect straight line, which they told me was from the piece being bent for oil changes. They didn't have the part in stock and I was going on a long trip the next day, so they put the piece back in place with new clips and zip ties. The dealer said it should be replaced at the next oil change which will be 60k for me.

My 2000 GTI and 2001 Passat have dull headlights plastic covers. I did try a kit from autozone with sand papers and a liquid polish without good results - It was a great workout.

One of the things that kind of annoys me about the B7 is that none of the plastic storage areas are lined. Hence, whenever you put something in them it rattles around when you drive. I was searching the web for a solution and ran across this product: [URL]...............
It is a flocking kit.

I noticed something clunking around in the plastic piece that is on the trunk lid itself - the piece that covers the brake lights. When the trunk goes up or down, there is a distinct noise that is something rolling around in there.
I pulled off the access panel to get to the lights, but is does the rest of it just snap off if I pull at it or use a pry tool?

This morning after pulling out of the garage, i notice a small wet spot on the floor, went to see what it was and it was oil, its was a wierd shade of red/orange and very clear, def not engine oil. Then looked under a car and saw it where it came from, front driver side, there is a some kind of plastic cover, it was collecting there then dripping out. I can see the oil dripping on the plastic cover when looking from the engine bay? What can it be?
