Phaeton :: How To Get Ski Bag Folded Back In
Nov 8, 2006
I took my brand new used Phaeton for a 2000 mile road trip between SoCal and Colorado last week, and brought a couple pairs of skis in the ski bag (5 seater). Now, I can't fold the damn thing back in between the two doors. Any hints or tricks? Right now, I just have it sticking out into the trunk.

Notice this:
Why can you not have someone in the back seat directly behind the passenger seat if the passenger seat is folded down? Hell, it even says no one can be in the back-middle-seat either! Kind of ridiculous, don't you think? What is the specific reason?

I have a 2010 LX and the third row seat on the driver side got stuck in folded position. Warranty on these parts is over.

My daughter dropped something in the seat belt hole in the back seat. I have forgotten, if I ever knew, how to lift up the back seat in the Phaeton?

So my understanding is the water temp gauge at 200 degrees is pretty much spot on. The last three days I notice the temp gauge go to 200 then up to 240 which is like just one line away from the red zone. I turned on my heat full blast and was on the tollway and the temps went back to 200. The moment I got back into stop and go traffic the temp goes up again 220-240 range. Again, one line away from the red zone. No other alarms or dash messages come up. No smell of anti-freeze.
As well, the oil temp which was always at 200 has done the same thing. Running over 200 in the 220 plus range. Could this just be low anti-freeze? If so, would I not get a dash warning light?

I am experiencing a slight bump when up-shifting from 1-2nd and back, sometimes with hi-er revs, sometimes just a delay followed with a "bump". A quote from an indy mechanic came at around $4500... (as I have 2004 4,2) he thinks seals are not soft / flexible any more therefore at lower speeds not allowing enough oil to go through... or something like that ( I`m not sure how that all works...)
Most of the similar threads indicate a flush first and if no improvement than a complete re & re.
Interesting enough, I went to VW dealer for a second opinion and they said that getting an individual parts for transmission repair is impossible for them, rather a whole unit only?!

I'm hearing a clunk when I back out of my garage and cut the wheel to the right full stop. If I turn the wheel lock to lock I hear some clicking. Both of these sounds seem to emanate from the left front wheel area.
I have 26,000 miles on the car. Any conjecture as to what this could be?

In the past few days, I've noticed that when my headlights are on the white backlighting of the speedometer, tachometer, and other gauges in the instrument cluster fail to illuminate, however the red needles within each gauge do illuminate properly. Furthermore, the rheostat adjustment does successfully brighten and dim the red needles, but the faces of the gauges remain dark. I checked fuses 23 and 27 and both are fine.

This morning as I was heading for work out of the blue my driver's seat moved completely back while in motion, and moving mirrors. It was kind of dangerous.

Just when I thought I understood how to use all the controls on the 2006 V8 Phaeton I got two weeks ago, the steering wheel has thrown me a curve.
I have pressed the button on the column that makes the wheel move back when I turn off the car so its easier to get out, then it moves back to the set position when I start the car again. But for some reason, it moves back, but no longer moves forward to the set position when I start the car again. Have I done something by accident to change this function?

My sis drove the Phaeton yesterday and we had to go through some nerve-wrecking parking. The gaps were only a few milimetres across but luckily we made it through the lot in the end. Anyway, we had to do a lot of full steering turns (that is, when the wheel is turned to its maximum) and there's a worrying clicking sound that goes on until the steering is turned back from its maximum radius. Is it a problem or just a minor thing?

Chrome Side Molding coming loose on passenger back door. I tried a clear silicon and clamped for 3 hours. Unclamped and trim is lifting back up ?
Looks like clip behind trim snapped. Any kind of glue or adhesive can be recommend that will work?
While clamping trim to door I put a crimp mark in trim. Somewhere down the road I will replace this crimped trim.

My driver side window intermittently in express mode up bounces off the top sill then rolls back down about 3/4. Motor replaced twice, regulator once. Still no fix.

I collapsed the rear seats this morning, loaded the Treg up with stuff (nothing too heavy) and drove 200 miles. Got home, unloaded stuff and then tried to put the seats back up. The center seat belt is integrated into the passenger side 60% folding seat. But for some reason it's now "locked" as the belts do when the car is in an accident.
Since the belt is tight as it is in the lowered position, it will not allow me to lift up the back portion of the seat. After looking at it in the somewhat narrow view I have from between the floor and the lowered back rest, I can see that when I try to lift the back rest, the belt needs to slack some to allow the seat back to go all the way up. But since it catches, it only allow the seat back to raise about 6" before it's too tight to raise the seat back anymore.
I looked at the mounting bolts for the bottom portion of the belt in the space I can see and I see a 12 point star pattern bolt (not sure of proper name). With my Passat, I was able to find a suitable allen wrench that fits in the 12 point star pattern bolt that controls the back door catch for adjustment purposes. But with this one, I tried both metric and SAE and neither has a close enough match.
The belt locking mechanism allows for about 1" of belt travel before it locks. I've jiggled with the belt trying to get the mechanism to unlock so I don't have to remove the belt anchor point on the floor of the car (which I don't have the right wrench for). Anything I can do with the belt? Or do I just go after getting the right wrench and undoing the anchor to allow more belt slack to reset the belt?

I am about to acquire a Silver 2004 v8 Phaeton with 83000 mi. There is an issue that the owner is going to fix, but he and his Phaeton mechanic have not yet diagnosed correctly. It is a hum that comes and goes with a periodicity of about once a second (as in "waa waa waa ...") , seems to be coming from the left front. It becomes noticeable around 45 mph and as the speed increases it gets a bit louder and pitch gets higher but the waa waa ... interval does not speed up. Of course it might be speeding up so slowly that seems to be constant but doesn't seem that way.
They have replaced the tires and the LF wheel bearing. I know there are some wheel bearing issues and that is the usual suspect, but wouldn't a wheel bearing make a constant "waaaaa" and not a repeating harmonic "waa waa waa..."?
Also a harmonic resonance, which this seems to be requires 2 inputs, which are not quite at the same frequency. So I had thought about the cv joints, inner vs outer. I had the car on a lift with a mechanic that I have worked with for some time (german car specialist), and the cv boots were in good shape, so it seems unlikely that the cv joint(s) are bad as they usually (to my knowledge, which could be incorrect) do not fail unless the boot gets damaged and lube leaks out and dirt gets in.

I finally took possession of my Phaeton and have been driving it daily. We're very quickly falling in love. With the Northeast snow storm that just hit, I've now had the opportunity to see how it performs in slippery conditions. When it comes to going, I'm loving the AWD. When it comes to stopping, there are some issues. The car is so heavy that it's difficult to wrangle that inertia, and the ABS is driving me a little nuts. I grew up inland from Lake Ontario, in the northern edge of upstate New York's "snow belt." I've been driving in snow since I've been driving. I think ABS is great for the masses, but frankly I can stop the car more effectively (if a little less controlled) without it. It doesn't look like there's any way to disable it, like you can with the traction control. Are there any secret tips?

Yesterday, I parked my Phaeton and hit the button to lock it. Nothing. I walked all around the car, pressing the button a couple dozen times. Still nothing. The trunk release button wouldn't respond either.
So I get in the car, start it up again, turn it back off, and try the key again. This time, it locks normally on the first try. What is the reason for it?

My Wife has been driving my Phaeton once a week to keep everything working normally. She hand washed the car and somehow during the washing evolution she set the alarm off. Now she's telling me the car will start but then it shuts down and also she can't get the key out of the ignition.
I had the car setup for a tow to the VW dealer so they could figure things out but the tow truck driver couldn't get it started or get the key out either so they couldn't tow it and from what my wife told me, they bought the wrong type of tow truck.
I don't know if this is a battery issue or what because the wife stated she hasn't had any problems cranking the car previously and battery has always shown the proper voltage and was checked by the VW dealership a few months ago and got a good bill of health.

So driving the Phaeton on a road trip today. I believe it did not lock on to any satellites and then the compass pointed the wrong direction for a while, leaving me in the middle of the ocean (I was on the coast of California).
My problem now is that after restarting the car multiple times I am still way out in the middle of the ocean. Is there any way to clear the cached GPS location data, or otherwise reset the navigation system? The reset function did nothing.
Edit: This actually happens rather often however typically fixes itself pretty quickly. Unfortunately I don't think it will recover this time in the same fashion, as recovery is typically very gradual and I am apparently about 150 miles out to sea at the moment.

I assume that it is here someplace, but I did a search and couldn't find it. Is there some information available to compare the Phaeton with the Audi models? I understand that they are similar, but the Phaeton has many options included (especially the W12's), where the Audi has them as options. Is this the case?
