Phaeton :: Head Lights Are Flickering
Sep 20, 2007
I just noticed that the headlights are flickering like crazy, both of them. I was trying to hold them from the inside but they are still doing it. I dont think they are moving.

View 1 RepliesNoticed a slight flickering of my guage lights recently. All other lights in the car as well as all screened displays are stable and do not fluctuate. I've raised and lowered the instrument dimmer control which functions as it should to no avail. Voltage of left battery is to spec so I assume the alternators output is OK.
View 3 RepliesPast couple of days I've had a warning pop up for "Check lights" sometimes even before i have turned them on although I do have arrive depart set to activate. On looking around all seem to be OK apart from maybe 2 leds within the tail lights. It does seem to go out within a couple of mins of actually setting off as well so clearly somethings sorting itself out.... What to check next? they seem to be working fine, I can see them autolevel when I pull up behind a car and the car settles on its suspension etc.
View 6 RepliesCan I just replace the bulb to fix the flickering problem with the HID headlights? Before it was once in a while but not it's more then I would like. I think the problem might be the bulbs vs the auto leveling (I don't see it moving in a park position).
View 24 RepliesNoticed either one or both headlights flickering when accelerating? My dealer replaced the bulbs, but the problem is still occurring. It's not just me as I was followed by a Phaeton in London with the exact same problem!
View 8 RepliesLast night, I was driving around and noticed that my lights seemed to be flickering and dimming like CRAZY. It was really bad. Not just the headlights, but all the lights. The climatronic, radio, dash, map etc. The climatronic seemed to make things worse, but it did it even without it on.
Then I was in my buddys driveway in neutral and noticed that if i gave it some gas, the lights got brighter...it wasn't a small difference either...like when the lights dimmed, it was nearly HALF as bright! its like the car was losing juice big time...
I checked my battery cables this morning and they're tight. the car starts right up in the cold so I don't think its my battery. what other signs of alternator failure would i be noticing, or could it be something else?
My V6 Tdi is in the garage with a leaking cylinder head, this is the 2nd time the head has required replacing first at 46,000 now the replacement head is leaking ( porous ) after being on the car for 80,000. So ! 2 heads in 2 years.
View 8 RepliesMy wagon 2003 l-300 has flickering lights and when the radio is off you can hear the engine whine. Is this a grounding problem or is the alternating system going out? I have checked all the connections and do not see anything obvious. What to check.
View 9 RepliesI started the car this morning, plugged the phone charger into the lighter socket, noticed the charger light wasn't on, pressed the charger in tighter, the car started to run funny, then it cut off. Lights work, radio won't work, all fuses are alright upon several visual inspections. Car wants to turn over but won't start. I tried disconnecting the negative battery cable to see if the car would revert back to "normal". I have never had a problem with this car in the two years I've had it; the battery was purchased brand new in November of 2011. I unplugged the cigarette lighter to see if that would work but nothing so far. Could it be the ignition switch?!
View 3 RepliesI have an 03 Golf VR6 and only has 76k on it. Ive only had it a week but I have come to notice a couple peculiarities. So first off at night regardless of speed or RPMs, ALL OF MY LIGHTS have a slight flicker. Its not a huge difference, but its definitely noticeable. Engine runs fine. No battery light. Additionally, twice when I go to start it in the morning, after starting the alternator workshop light will kick on. after giving it a tiny bit of gas it goes away and doesn't come back. Everything else seems fine. no check engine lights, no trip meter resetting, and the flickering seems to be sporadically. Tonight I tested the battery and alternator and both tested good. My only thought is that it might be a loose ground. Tomorrow I plan on taking a look at the ground under the battery. I've tried searching the threads here, but Im having trouble finding any relevant info. Also, is the voltage regulator inside the alternator, a separate piece, or in the ecm?
View 7 RepliesI have the Bi-xenon's I had installed on the top and I wanted my Fog lights to match. At a performance shop they installed Can Bus Ballasts with 6000K light to match the top Xenon's. I turned Cornering lights off in VI -COM so my car will stop kicking on the dash light every time I turn a corner. Here the weird part.
If I turn my fog lights on during the day NO FLICKERING. But at night the front left Flickers. I've replaced the Ballast and the light and it still does it. I think it has something to do with the Automatic Switch that turns the lights on at night.
So I swapped out my OEM battery for one straight from Hyundai and during the first night time drive, I immediately noticed a very severe flicker with the lights (headlights, interior and trunk) when idling that was definitely not there with the original battery. I have already done the ground strap mod so I went back and re-cleaned the grounding points and even filed down the grounding post on the new battery itself but the problem remains.
I'm thinking I either got the wrong battery or a bum one and the alternator is only a year or so old.
The last month or so, I have noticed that my dash board lights (red lights) and my actual interior lights that come on when you open the doors to vehicle will flicker sometimes...And it can get bad I guess and annoying. It's more of it pulsating really. I noticed today while driving home and I had the radio on loud it was doing it and I do not know if was just in my head that it was doing it more when the radio was loud or what, but this is ridiculous.
View 3 RepliesJust recently bought the car a month ago. This car has been giving me a lot of headaches. First my radio unit wouldn't work properly. Just started my car today and my gauges are flickering. Seatbelt and airbag keep flickering on and off. AC says 32.0 temp and wont let me adjust it. Passenger windows don't work. Driver window goes up and down but isn't automatic anymore. I have to hold it both ways.
View 14 Repliesthe flickering stopped after 10 mins and hasnt come back. is this an alternator problem or loose battery cables/ground strap?
View 1 RepliesI got the aftermarket lights through Yefeng, with quad HIDS. So after a while, Cluster lights, Vanity mirror lights, tail lights, cabin roof lights all started to flicker or strobe faintly. Very noticeable either when lights are on or off, drive or park.
Car has less than 12k miles.
I've been driving it like that with no problems. Except one morning before I left to work, car wouldn't start. (Happened randomly) Battery is good, alternator is good. Could something be pulling power from the alternator? I have no clue.
Well I parked my car yesterday evening and its fine. Well this morning I go out and try to go to work and my keyless entry doesn't work. So I unlock the door manually and as soon as I open the door I hear this clicking soon almost sounds like the blinker but faster and more erratically. All cabin lights are flickering and the car has no power the battery is dead. What could cause this? Is something shorting out, Could my aftermarket radio stayed on and drained the battery? Maybe it was clicking because the cabin lights were trying to come on but didn't have enough juice. Well I am charging it now and I am gonna see what happens.
View 2 RepliesHere is the issue:I own a 96 Impreza. Recently, I went to the grocery store and when I tried to leave the car wouldn't start. I had it towed to my house. The dashboard lights and stereo flicker and when I try turning the key no sound. If I try to honk the horn, there is a buzzing sound coming from the passenger side. If I try to turn the emergency blinkers there is a buzzing too. The automatic lock doesn't work .The out side lights don't work either. The "key has been left in" sound does work. I tested the battery with a multimeter and it is working fine. A friend mentioned the ignition switch but would this affect the locks too?
tl;dr: Nothing electric works. The lights flicker and somethings make a buzzing sound. The battery is fine. Could the ignition switch cause the locks not to work?
So just bought an 2001 Excursion XLT 3 days ago! Truck only has 43k. The motor is 6.8 V10. So driving home the other night I noticed all the lights inside and out are flickering!! No battery light at This time. So here's what I did so far had the battery and alternator tested and everything passed. I've read some forums and heard the alternator may pass and still could be the issue... so bought a new one well even with the new one no luck. BUT if I unplug the alternator while running the lights no longer flicker.
View 14 RepliesToday while the drivers door was open the interior lights started flickering and then all interior lights went off. Looked at the manual and do not see interior light fuse or relay. Also while looking at the manual, the lights flickered a few times and I could hear clicking behind the steering column. They lights never came back on. The interior "roller" switch is in the correct position, its also does not turn on the interior lights. I have also lubricated all the latches. What can I check or do to troubleshoot?
View 14 RepliesLooking for complete silence from the head unit. Is there a mute button or something I'm missing? I know pushing the volume button mutes it, but is there anything else that mutes it. I am going to reinstall cd changer tonight, to go back to factory setup to see if the sound comes back. I hope the dice unit has not blown an amp or something.
