Phaeton :: Getting Error Heated Steering Is Off
Nov 10, 2004
I noticed a week ago the sporadic appearance of a white logo on the left side of the info screen behind the steering wheel. I looked in the manual and could find no warning icon to match. Finally, as I started my car one morning, the whole display said: "Heated wheel is off."
The manual explains how to turn the heated wheel on, but it doesn't clarify if this is a temperature-controlled function. If I leave it on, is the wheel heated constantly, or only below certain ambient temps? Does it switch off automatically after a period of time? In an Audi I previously owned the heated wheel came on when the heated seats were activated. The Phaeton is obviously a different system, but I'm wondering why the icon telling me it was off finally appeared on the display. Because the temp has been falling below 40 degrees outside?

My year 11 3L V6 Phaeton has the heated steering wheel button fitted on the right side return of the wheel centre hub and it indeed does press in as though there is a switch there, but the wheel never gets warm and no lights/symbols come up on the console.
I guess the simple question is: Do VW fit these switched even if the option is not installed? I've taken a photo of the options sheet from the manual, at the link below: need to decipher some of these codes, that would be good too.

I received error code P0031 on my 06 Avalon the other day. It states that the HO2S (Heated Oxygen Sensor) is bad. Bank 1 Sensor 1. I located the sensor but have a few questions...
Just to give an over view for those that don't know where these are, there are 4 sensors the one in the front on the manifold (upper - B2, S1), (lower - B2, S2) and the rear manifold (upper - B1, S1), (lower - B1, S2).
All of the sensors look the same with 4 wires. what the part number is for the sensor? Also since this is the hardest one to get to, I would like to know where the wire routes to. I found the wire up to the connector on every other sensor except the one I need (B1S1). It looks like it runs towards the top of the engine but from the top I don't see it.

The 'issue' is that for the driver's seat (18-way seat), position 1.5 is slightly too hot and position 1.0 is slightly too cool. The adjustment is only in 0.5 increments so I have a problem - so far the only solution has been to keep changing the setting between 1.0 and 1.5 every few minutes.
On the passenger side the ratio of heat to settings is slightly different and 1.5 is about right. Is there any adjustment / calibration possible between adjustment setting and actual seat temperature?

My driver side heated seats don't work anymore. Passengers work fine just figuring out what could be the issue.

I am still trying to make the darn thing work to no avail. There does not seem to be any sign of an on/off indicator. Never sure when I push the button if it is on or not and how many times do I push it.

My T-reg has the winter pkg with the heated steering wheel. Is there some kind of indication light that comes on that lets you know the heat is on , I can't see any indication ,and it seems dumb to not have one . Like having heated seats w/o a indicator light and having to wait till your butt heats up to see if they're on.

I've got the button for turning on the heated steering wheel, but I don't think that was an option I got. It doesn't seem to get warm. Is the button there even if you don't have the option? If mine is heated, is there an indicator to tell you its turned on?

My V10 has the wood steering wheel, and the button to turn heat on and off. I have not been able to get this feature to work. On questioning the dealer they said that this option was not offered in Australia. It seems unlikely to me that a manufacturer would make two types of wood wheel as the production run would be more expensive than just one.

I don't have remote start and I don't like the idea of my car being able to drive away without me in the driver seat.
So.... any mod I can do so my steering wheel won't be freezing cold?
I've looked into steering wheel cover but they are so ugly.

I just had my Treg in the shop for 4 days doing the hitch wiring recall. When I got it back, a small icon in the MFI (top left) is always on. It is the heated steering wheel off icon. When I turn on the heated steering wheel, it works and a green symbol appears in the middle of the MFI, but as soon as it is turned off, the other steering wheel icon shows up on the left side of the MFI. Is this normal? It didn't do this before taking it in, but they did a number of reprograms to get proper signals going to the trailer wiring.

My 04 V8 didn't come with the manual when I bought it. I found a document online showing that the 2004 only needed service/oil change every 10K but I wanted to double check that as it seemed a lot of miles to be between services, and I'm at 14,990 miles right now so if I need a 15K service I need to get it scheduled.
Also, how do I turn on the heated steering wheel thing? Just for the "cool" factor I want to test it out but I can't find the control anywhere for it. I'm assuming my car has it since it has the pass through ski bag.

Since the day I purchased my Touareg, the heated steering wheel has worked inconsistently (usually not at all). I bought it in November of 2003 and thoughout the winter I brought it in 5 times telling them that it would not turn on when I started the truck. Of course, having an early VIN truck I don't have the symbol that tells me the wheel is supposed to be heating, so I have to guess... But with below freezing temps, I turn the truck on, push the button and nothing happens. After 5 minutes I push the button again and still nothing happens. Every time I took the truck in, the dealer told me there were fault codes in the truck saying that the heater was stopping because of a lack of required voltage. Several electrical fixes later (some parts blew out at various times and were replaced), it seemed to work. Then Spring came and it won't turn on until fall when it gets cold again... This past fall, I reported the problem again and they put several updates and fixes into the truck but they have not been able to fix the problem.
Today, I went back into the dealership and they told me this was "normal"... The note they put in was as follows:"Tested steering wheel heater in GFF. Steering wheel heater is not failing. Customer will only be able to tell if the heated wheel is working on really cold days. Steering wheel only heats up to 77 degrees."
When it works, there's no mistaking that it's on and it does shut off when it reaches a warm temperature. But when it's 25 degrees out and it doesn't warm the wheel - it seems to me that it's broken... Have such a hard time telling when their heated wheel is working?

I don't have the winter package on my early production V8, but the button to control the heated steering wheel is present. Is it there on all vehicles, but non-functional in some, or did I luck out? Hoping that maybe VW was trying to make up for the fact that I didnt get the sun shades, the hatch assist, etc.

I have the Winter Package on my Treg and when I can get the heated steering wheel feature to work it's awesome. My problem is that it doesn't ALWAYS seem to work... Sometimes when I push the button, nothing happens. Other times, it turns on and off on demand. The salesman suggested that it might only work when the heated seats are on but that doesn't seem to make it work either.

I've noticed several times, already my heated steering wheel will automatically turn off at random times.
During the winter months i keep it on almost all the time, but noticed occasionally it just shuts off, and even gives the message in the dash that the heated steering wheel is off.
Last time it happened, i was driving for about 25 minutes, at a stop light. Whats odd is its been on for 45-60 minute drives with no issues.
I don't even think it could be diagnosed by the dealer since I don't know what the trigger is.

Just picked up a 2009 LS 460 with 35k. Car is gorgeous and I'll post a separate thread with all the details. But...the heated steering wheel light is illuminated and stays illuminated even if the car is off. Won't go off by pushing the button and the wheel doesn't seem warm. Could it be a fuse?

I have a 2015 Platinum Superduty that came with a heated steering wheel but cannot figure how to turn it on and off. I have looked for a dash switch and in the climate portion of the touch screen with no luck. My wife's car has a simple dash mounted switch and also a temp sensor that cuts it on automatically when cold. No such luck with truck.

...program my 2013 GS so that the seat warmers and heated steering wheel turn on when the car is first started?
I have remote start and it would be nice, if they would come on right when the car starts up.

While enjoying a brisk drive returning from PA to CT this past weekend the five-inch dash display between the tach/speedometer (which was doing a nice job with route guidance) asked me to stop and shift into "P" intermittently. At 85mph I thought it best to ignore the request plus I didn't want to stop and ruin my MPH average. Upon arrival in CT and letting the car rest for a few hours the display is functioning normally. Have been asked to shift into "P" while making mile markers disappear quickly? The trip was so comfortable and effortless that maybe the car was playing with me out of boredom?

My 2006 V8 has starting problems since a few days ago.
After the problem occurred I was able to start the car using the right/left/right key turn but this worked only one time. Further attempts did not work. Upon the turn of the key all the dashboard lights would come up, the voltage appeared to come up over 12 volts but no joy on turning over the starter.
Vag Com scans on this car always showed some low voltage errors and the left side battery was old so I replaced the left side battery, something I had intended to do before too long anyway. After replacing the left side battery the car started once, not as it should but again using the right/left/right key sequence. I drove the car around the block and all seemed well, but after shutting it off, the same symptoms reappeared, no start...
Another poster had similar problems and it turned out to be relay 433 in the right side plenum relay/fuse box. I replaced this relay with a known good one, no change in the symptoms.
I disconnected the negative post of the starter battery, again after reading of another poster's experience, and the car starts right up ! Reconnecting the starter battery brings back the no start behavior.
I have no reason to suspect the starter battery, voltage is 12.6 or so...
Attached is a scan done on the car after installing the new left side battery:
