I have experienced a strange error 3 times now in the last few weeks. It appears that one or both of the headlights go out for a second or two; this if followed by a audible "beep" and a warning indication flashes over the center dash screen that states "check lights" or similar. A second or two later the front light(s) are back on. The warning is orange or yellow in color. My Phaeton has just over 37k miles.
View 6 RepliesHow the rear, high center mounted brake light (ie "3rd brake light") intermittently lights individual bulbs, but never all at once. It was also causing an annoying "Check Brake Lights" warning plus beep on the dash (on every brake). Till I get it sorted I simply disconnected the 3rd brake light which completely turned it off and just gave me one warning/beep (instead of lots of them).
I spoke to VW about it yesterday and wasnt impressed by their attitude, so last night I tried plugging it back in to see if it was still the same now that my battery should be topped up due to change of house and longer trips. To my surprise at first it worked perfectly, all bulbs lit up.
However the more I tested, the less lights lit up. It was quite strange, they would "dance" on an off right in front of me. Wiggling the wiring had a small effect, but it didnt seem to be a wiring issue. So I plugged it out and left it was it was (disabled). However to my annoyance on my trip in today, I start getting repeated "Check Brake Light" warnings beeps (remember, its disconnected so it should do it once only) and even more irritating every time the warning came up on the dash the front left headlamp would flash on and off once! What the hell is going on with the lighting system!
I have a very annoying "check brake light" warning popping up in my dash with a small beep every time I brake. It seems that some of the LEDs are sometimes not illuminated but in a sort of varying configuration. Is this possibly a connector issue? (where are the wires coming from?)
Do I need to replace the LED-bar as a whole or can it be mended in subunits?
When I have to work on the light, do I REALLY have to remove the entire backseat and hatshelf (as WillemBal did to get rid of a fly that was stuck there!) or are there less invasive procedures that can be performed?
I've been getting this "system fault workshop!" error message popping up like crazy. Its got a picture of a key, and makes the audible beep when it appears. on a short drive to work, maybe 10 minutes, it will randomly come on and beep anywhere from 3-10 times during my drive. The car starts and drives perfectly fine. This has been happening for a little over a week now. I noticed one post about this before, but that owner seemed to have different symptoms as their car wouldn't start. I really would hate to bring it into the dealership, as I've just paid them a small fortune fixing different things to finally get down to the bottom of it to find out i needed new fuel pump modules.
View 3 RepliesLast weekend, while i was replacing a brake light bulb on my daughters car (!) , i had to use my car to get the bulb from the local store and guess what my "check lights" warning came on and since then a broken light bulb is showing on the left side of the center display and it does not go away anymore.
I have now at least checked every (visible) light bulb on the car twice and I can not find any bad one. Yesterday I checked the fuses and again all are fine.
Looking through the owners handbook (section 3 and 4), i can not even find any mentioning of the "bad light bulb" symbol.
So, here are my questions:
Is the orange (turnsignal) bar under the headlights used for anything else ?
Every few days I get an orange warning that says "check lights" for about 2 seconds. I am assuming that soon I will have to replace some of the bulbs. I understand that doing it at the dealer its a very expansive item, and that is not covered by warranty.
View 9 RepliesToday I had the joy of covering 200+ miles on my W12 today. While I was out and about there were 3-4 times I went around a right hand turn somewhat quickly and a "check please lights" warning appeared on the instrument cluster. At the end of the day I inspected the exterior lights with all working or so it seems. I found it odd that this only appeared during sharp turns to the right.
View 10 RepliesA couple of days ago, my "Check Lights" warning came on as I used the right turn signal. After inspecting all of the lights on the outside of the car, I could see that the red led rear turn signal group was out (although it has sporadically come on a couple of times since then).
Just to be sure, I checked all of the related fuses in the front and rear fuse blocks, but they were all fine. It seems to me that this may either be a lose fitting or (since the tail lights are installed as one unit) I may have to have the right rear entire tail light group replaced.
Before I drop the car off at the dealer, looking for instructions as to how I could investigate further (open up the tail light and look for a lose wire) ?
One of my taillights stopped functioning last night on my drive home. The "check lights" message came up on screen, accompanied by a loud warning chime. However, it wouldn't stop. It kept flashing "check lights" over and over, and kept repeating the chime every few seconds for my entire ride home.
This morning, everything seems to be OK. The taillight is still out, but it's not chiming repeatedly (at least for now). What caused my Phaeton to freak out like that?
We were driving 2015 450h with 2200 miles on a slight downhill grade about 50 mph. Suddenly ABS warning light, master warning light, and audible warning activated. The center console "Brake" illuminated and the information center displayed "check hybrid system".
My wife attempted to pull the car off the road in a controlled manner but even slightly touching the brakes caused them to pulse, braking hard and then releasing. She finally got the car to the side of the road and shut the engine off. I then got into the drivers seat and turned the car on. The messages remained. Tried on an off, still the same. Tried brakes, the seemed functional. Since we were in a location that did not have cell service and it was an unsafe location to leave the car managed to drive it into nearest town.
Turned the car on and off about 10 times over the period of an hour. Without explanation, the car started with no warning messages. Dove the car another 200 miles since and it has now been at he dealer for over a day with no word.
I did see where a few RX350 models had reported a similar problem, but no 450h's. At the time of the incident we were not using the PCS system (off) . I am wondering about that as well since the ABS might be tied into the PCS?
I have got a plug in supply phev kit, and I live in the uk. As the software on the kit is written for the American market, I'm assuming our speeds are a little different, ie, the phev kit always wants to enter ev mode automatically below or at 30mph, and the kit does do this, but our 30 mph speed must be different to the usa, as the kit tries to enter ev mode when I'm doing speeds of over 30mph even up to 35 mph, the the cars software stops this from happening and the audible alarm sounds, 4 beeps, and words on the led state ev mode not allowed because we are of course going too fast.
This is of course quite annoying sometimes when the kit is constantly trying to get into ev mode and alarms are frequent at speeds between 30 and 35 mph, over this speed the kit stops trying to go into ev mode.
The kit is working really well to be honest, and I am very pleased with the way it works. One thing I would like to do is to try to stop the audible alarm when the ev mode is not allowed, is there a way of disabling the cannot enter ev mode chime / beep alarm with software, I do own a techstream light.
I wish the PIS program and software was open source, I could alter the parameter myself then.
One more slight thing that could be addressed is sometimes, but not very often, when I am driving in mixed or blended mode, the oem hybrid battery gets too full of charge and the engine starts to burn off the Excess charge in the battery, again if the PIS program was open source, I could adjust the point at which the kit battery adds into the oem battery, I would drop that parameter a volt or 2 to stop the oem battery going into excess and burn off process.
I must say though, apart from these 2 slight annoyances, the kit is awesome.
I have a 2001 prius jap import. On a trip it beeped and up came the triangle, check engine light and car with !. The car lost all power and the engine stalled when I pulled over. I plugged in my obd2 scanner and no codes except 3000. Took it to our local toyota dealer who confirmed that code. Had the battery swapped out and still it does the same except now no codes. The car has below normal pickup speed and I can hear the engine rev a little but it does not seem to make any difference. Seems all the power comes from the battery. It will stall when all the error lights come on.
View 4 RepliesI have returned from abroad after 7 weeks, and my late 2004 Phaeton (3.2 Petrol) has taken a day to "power up" and for some warning icons to disappear. After two days, I have the "Check Brake Pads" warning on. It happened only an hour ago. My breaks feel okay. The car has done 28000 miles.
View 24 RepliesJust got my car back from it's recent service. The trunk wire harness was replaced under extended warranty. I noticed a light bulb emblem on my front center screen but continued on to the grocery. Upon starting car after leaving grocery I received a "check lights" warning on that screen for several seconds. Since the chain of events have been
1) Repair TPMS control module, and this leads to
2) Repair motor that raises rear privacy shield which led to
3) All 5 tire sensors needing replaced, which led immediately to
4) Trunk harness needing replaced and now I have this light issue.
I've literally left the car dealership after the last 3 services with new problems to deal with.
I just received a check headlight signal on the dash. I did a visual check and it was the passenger high discharge lamp. I thought i saw a post on here one time at how to trouble shoot this or even change the lamp.
View 7 RepliesOn starting today I had an alarm to check coolant. Never had this before - and the expansion tank was dry. No visible signs of loss - Oil seems fine and free from contaminant.. so I guess not the head gasket!

1st the touchscreen decided it didn't want to play ball for a couple of hours refusing to respond at all - the screen would change between functions but refused point blank to operate any of the touch controls - not funny when you have just got off the ferry in France with a 600ml drive to do and not a clue where your going!
Now I have an array of warning lights flashing away at me
All within about a mile 1st up was the particle filter blocked message and light then the engine light in rev counter rapidly followed by engine fault workshop message with second engine light in centre display , then came the the flashing glow plug light accompanied by a drop in power, I presume we are now in some sort of limp home mode!
Car is a UK 2011 3.0tdi GP3 ... I will attempt to get her into a dealer this afternoon and post a follow up on what they find.
My Phaeton has pretty audible whine when turning the steering wheel. Closer to lock- the louder the noise. Can I check the fluid myself or is this going to become a trip to the dealer?
View 5 RepliesMy wife was driving down our street today, a two way street, narrow at best of times. On one side a monster snow pile ( 6-7ft high), the other side a very big truck coming at her, minimal passing room, like almost touching her mirrors.
The warning lights on both sides went from green to yellow and red ...beeping all the time. The Phaeton stalled. Not once or twice, but four times !!
Question : did the engine stall because of the red beeping lights on both sides sensed imminent danger ? ...... and she kept on going. She thinks so.

Went out to my car at lunch today and the "Check Brake Lights" warning came on. I checked the lights and my top center brake light is out. No fuses are burned out.
My t-reg just show me "Check Lights" and I had check all the lights and can't find anything wrong with them... is this a common problem? All the lights and brake lights seems to work fine.
