Second time that my 2004 Phaeton has experienced an ignition lock up. 1st time while driving the ignition shut off and everything stopped. I was getting the car towed and upon recheck all was well. Now, while driving, the panel flashed "Stop, Ignition Lock".
View 2 RepliesBackground: 2004 Phaeton, 38k miles, no major/minor mechanical issues -- until now. Issue is this. The drain lines in the trunk area of the car became clogged one dark and dreary night. Water overflowed -- somehow -- onto the starter circuits.
Whilst driving to the office the "IGNITION LOCK WARNING" indicator came on. When I arrived at the office and shut off the engine, the car became completely immobilized (imagine several hisses and four distinct thunks) and the key became stuck in the ignition.
The ignition circuit was replaced and drains cleaned out with 'nipples' removed to ensure no more blockages. HOWEVER, I have now been told the starter is bad.
While driving the other day, the instrument panel flashed showing a bulb out. I pulled into my local auto parts store down the street figuring i blew a bulb, no biggie. When i got out all bulbs were working... So i let it go and figured the light would go out, and it did a couple hours later. Yesterday when my girlfriend was driving the tig home from work she called saying that the light came on again but the whole right headlight was out... Hi beam, low beam, fog light and turn signal.
So when she got home i checked the bulbs, they were fine so i figured i would pop the fuse box and what do you know the fuse for the right headlight was melted. the fuse below it (horn) was also melted but still worked. So i drove it to West Broad VW (where i bought it) told them what was wrong and sure enough they said the fuse box needed to be replaced. The worst part about it was the few technicians that were in the service area both new what was wrong when i pulled up... and said it has been a common problem for our tigs and jettas...
Code 0341 (cam sensor?)On my way home epc light flashed about 5-7 times and message saying service engine. 111,000 miles and just had intake manifold replaced and plugs and coils not to long ago. I have been feeling a slight hiccup at cruising speed and twice my gti has just shut off while driving. New fuel filter as well. I searched the forum and didn't come up with anything specific. Can I just replace the cam sensor or is there more to it than that.
View 1 RepliesThe oil was changed by a highly reputable shop 2 days ago, (45 miles ago). My wife noticed today that the "Low Oil Pressure" red message flashed 3 times in the last 5 miles of her 10 mile trip (45-50 mph). She stopped the car and called me. I arrived at the parked Prius and saw no oil on the dipstick. I poured a quart of synthetic in and looked under the car to see it pouring out. My finger discovered that there was No Oil Plug. I called the shop and they sent a tow truck, put a new oil plug in, refilled the oil and claim no damage since "the Prius shuts off the gas engine when low oil pressure is sensed". Looking for information about this "shut off feature?" What should I ask from the shop? What should be tested & checked for? How do you test for damage to the bearings? How about a compression test? The car has 100K miles.
View 19 RepliesWe have had our Ford 6.7 diesel for a week today and on the way home I am pretty sure it did a regen. It flashed up and said "clean exhaust filter, then the miles per gallon dropped to down around 11 from 15.5 rather quick. The truck smelled really hot and we drove it for about 35 miles to home and MPG started going up and now it's ok. The thing that stumped me was that the truck only has 620 miles on it vs 6.7 miles it had when we bought it last weekend.
View 11 RepliesThis morning when I went to start my car i got a Service Now message. Once the car was started it went off and didn't come back on. I have no warning lights present on the dash what so ever. I've never seen this before.
What does it mean? I have an 04 W12 with 60,120 miles. BTW I've had all service work done for the 60,000 service. Car is beyond up to date with it's service.
Today I received a message on the MFI telling me that the coolant was overheating. My better judgement told me to immediately pull over at the next available spot to turn off the car since the coolant temp gauge was almost at 280. This is well over the 200 where it usually resides. However, the oil temp gauge was right at 200 which is normal.
Perplexed, I called my dealer. The Phaeton Tech was gone for the day so they suggested that I have the car towed in for inspection. Knowing the temperament of the Phaeton (2004 V8), I chose to restart after about 5 minutes. At that point, everything was reading fine & I drove home (about 20 minutes). I ran a VAG-COM scan to see if anything would come up, but nothing did.
Door panel has been off a few times to see what is up. drove it down the road a few times with the panel OFF to see if I could find the rattle...and it was quiet. when the panel goes back on, rattle comes back.
Now...where should I look at? is it one of the lock/door latch rods vibrating against the panel? that is about the only thing I can figure...
I've read around the forums stating the P Lock error is common from a low battery causing the vehicle not to start.
The strange thing is that my vehicle DOES start and the message appears and the dash shows READY and I am able to enter gear and drive. If I hit a button on the console the message goes away and if I'm driving at higher speeds the message does not return but the large triangle stays. The error message only reappears when I slow down to 3 mph.
The error does flash back on the screen when I slow down to stop or sit at a light. The car does not shut off during this it just flashes the message and shows the large triangle.
My battery test shows 12.3v on no load and 11.6 on a load. I would hate to replace my battery and have the issue not be resolved.
I posted last week that I was getting an intermittent "Steering Failure - Workshop" message on my '04 V-8 Phaeton. I asked forum members if I was alone and no one responded to the post. Last week I made an appointment with my VW dealer to get the car's steering fault looked at but I wasn't fast enough. The other day the car would not let me start it. The 'steering failure workshop' problem doesn't seem to be a mechanical issue. There are two other '04 Phaeton's at my dealer right now with the same problem. It looks like my car will join the party awaiting new steering control modules. The back-order on the modules appears to be at least another three weeks. Funny, you can get an entire Phaeton steering column in two days. If and when this steering module goes south all kinds of fun interior electrical glitches jump on board. No one ever said owning a Phaeton wouldn't be interesting and yes I still plan on keeping it for a very long time.

I had been getting the intermittent warning message, "Caution: The transmission lock mechanism is abnormal" although the vehicle has been able to start and drive just fine. I replaced the 12v battery, which was suggested in several other threads. However, the warning keeps reappearing. Possibly related, my gear shift knob is "sticky". I'm able to get it into each gear (and the transmission remains in the gear selected), but the knob does not move smoothly like it used to.

My phaeton has been playing up as when you turn the key it did not always turnover its now been stood for a while and now the ignition won't come on when the key is turned. both the batteries are full and the key are recognized the only thing to come on is the info display center above the gear lever i have tried a new ignition switch and still nothing, any clues my car is 2004 v10 auto one last thing is there a way to unlock the gear lever as this not working as well...

Once I start the engine it goes away. Is this normal?
My battery reads 12.6 with the engine off and 13.8 with it on.
Unfortunately the above message flashed up on my dashboard last night, and it has re-appeared first thing this morning. The first thing it switched off was my air con, also I notice that the battery meter now barely gets above 12, prior to this message it would go up to just under 14 once the engine had started. I have a 2004 3.2 v6 and, as a preventative measure, I had a new battery fitted about 4 months ago.

A few days ago , everytime i take the ignition key of the car , the car 'dies' ( headlights , radio , doors , alarm... ) and it stops working for a couple of minutes. When i put the key again , the car starts working and everything works 100% but if i remove the key again , the car dies again. The car runs fine if i ride it a whole day , no problems at all. The following day , the car dies again. What's wrong with it?
View 24 RepliesI just bought a new 2006 prius and have an issue with the FOB (it's pretty beat up from use -- ordered a new housing for it)...
It works great for locking and unlocking the car with the key in pocket, but as soon as I sit down to turn on the car, I get the beep and key icon flashing on the dash and no activity.
Only when I insert the key into the slot will the car turn on. The Key disable button under the steering wheel is not engaged.
Again, it recognizes for locking button and unlocking when I touch the handle, but I have to physically plug it in for the car to start....
I have an impala with a missing ignition lock cylinder. How to bypass the security with this component missing or know where to find the wiring schematic for this model. Every schematic I've found on the web aren't complete circuits.

View 4 RepliesI just completed the spark plug change on my wife's '07 RX350. As the numerous threads on this topic point out, this is one serious undertaking. I'm not claiming to be a mechanic but have done my share of DIY's including changing the usual oil/filter, brake discs/pads, serpentine belt, rear hatch switch and now the spark plugs on my wife's car and the same or similar on all of my other cars. This has got to be the single most difficult project that I've tackled recently. I did fail to do the front Mac struts but this was because I didn't appear to have the right spring compressor. Go figure.
Anyhow, I found that I needed to remove the front windshield cowl to get access to that infamous third stay bolt.
To my question ... I managed to break off the tabs that lock the connector to the ignition coil on about three spark plugs. I'm concerned about these eventually vibrating off. Should I be concerned about this? Do I need to now go in and change these? Or, tie-wrap then in place?
Just wondering if leaving the key in the ignition in the lock position causes the car to draw power from the battery.
