Passat (B7) :: 2012 - Won't Start Suddenly?
Sep 6, 2015
-Thought I'd post a quick update on the reliability of my 2012 TDi SEL:
A few weeks ago I noticed the cranking speed had started to slow and then suddenly one day, after driving the car for an hour, it refused to start. AAA jumped it and it of course started great. Did some testing to isolate the issue to the battery and I finally took the car to the dealer who confirmed that the battery was bad and replaced it for around 200 bucks including labor.
The car reached 60000 miles around the same time.
After the battery was replaced, the car is back to its normal self and all is well now.
Edit:I should add that I am not *really* disappointed in the somewhat short lifespan of the battery. I live in a hot area (SoCal) and this is not the first car I've owned where the battery only lasted 3-ish years.

Just got the 2012 Prius in June and have put around 12,500 miles on it. I have loved the car so much but last Wednesday night I came out of work and the car would not start. Thinking maybe it was just the 12v battery I called Toyota care. After attempting to have it jumped it still would not start. It was towed to the dealership located in Carlstadt, NJ. It has been over a week now and they still have not been able to fix it! They say they have run a diagnostic test on it and nothing comes back fine but they still can’t get it on. They say they are now testing each wire individually.

Yesterday, after having driven the car twice, I got in it to move it, and it would not start. It almost turns over, but never reaches a start, until the dash prompts me to to STOP. I also notice a stong gasoline smell when I get out of the car. What this might be?

I have a Passat 2.0 TSI 2008. Today after having lunch I tried to start the car to return to my office, but it didn't start. The lights dimmed like the power was draining. I tried again and no sign of a start and no lights this time. Called my insurance 24h assistance. They brought a spare battery and we connected it so as I could start the car. The started this time. Disconnected the spare battery, and left the motor running for 10 minutes. Instead of turning off the car, I decided to drive it a while to feel if everything was fine.
Well, the A/C turns on, but automatically turns off in a few seconds. The cruise control shows an exclamation sign and the horn is faint. When I stopped the car I noticed that the lights on the dash were kind of faint. Now, I am not sure I will manage to turn it on again. The battery seems to be on good shape. It has about 1,5 yr now and I could see that the indicator is green.

2012 Accent Hatchback. ~57k miles. (not yet done the 60k mile service)
So at about 1.4-1.7K rpm I hear a slight squeal and the engine's rpm suddenly jumps down for a second, and you can feel the car shake, then comes back up.
I was able to see it while idling, where the engine simply shook a little, like it's stuttering/sputtering and about to stall, but then immediately recovers and continues to idle normally until it happens again (not very often when in idle, usually more often when getting out of idle and slightly depressing the accelerator)
If I press the accelerator more or harder then I don't get any of it. I'm coming up the 60k mile service, and the schedule recommends inspecting and replacing the belt.
I am wondering if the belt slips on the alternator would you be getting similar symptoms or should I be looking elsewhere? I don't think this matters, but I'll mention it anyways, I'm about 1K miles overdue on an oil change. But I don't think 1k is that big of a deal.

I don't drive the truck much anymore but over time my MPG has gone to total crap...about 10mpg around town...and that's baby-ing it.
Now it suddenly takes many cranks to finally start on a first start. (cold or warm days)....

Owner of a 2013 Camry, So about a year and 3 months ago my radio killed itself. I had installed front door speakers and I guess they over drove the radio's amp and it fried itself. Saw the whole works, smoke, static from speakers etc. Well in Feb of 2015 I got another radio off a junker Camry and installed my factory speakers back in and it was working wonderfully... until now.
Yesterday after work I was driving home and suddenly the audio cuts out, usually i thought it was my Galaxy Note 4 because it has issues with Bluetooth but that wasn't the case this time. No sources would play audio. The radio turns on and everything. It accepts Bluetooth connections and plays CD's but there is no audio coming out. I checked all the speakers and none of them are touching metal.

For 2 years I've had no issues connecting my bluetooth to my Samsung Galaxy 4 phone. All of a sudden the screen on the Camry shows that it's not paired with my phone anymore. I go into Bluetooth setup and the area where you add a new bluetooth device isn't even allowed. The only option on the Bluetooth screen that's allowed to be touched is the "paired devises" line. My son's iphone still shows up and my old phone shows up. I wondered if it wasn't my phone but then when I go back to install a new bluetooth device it won't even let me.

My car's about 1.5 years old and 10k miles. About a week ago I started noticing that the power steering got a fair amount heavier/stiffer: it's suddenly a bit harder to turn the wheel. It came out of nowhere and I can't identify a cause, and the local dealership couldn't find anything wrong with the car. (2012 SE I4)
Since it's electric power steering I'm not sure what could have gone wrong here... and while it doesn't make the car un-driveable, it is rather annoying. The tire pressure is still around 37 PSI (according to the sensors) and they're Michelin.

Yesterday on my way home my engine turned off. I had just turned onto a side street so i went to give it some gas. Nothing. I tried again and still nothing. I looked down to make sure i was actually pressing the gas and not the brake and and thats when i noticed that the speedo and rpm gauges both were at 0. They were still lit up and the radio was still on and the windows still worked. So i pulled over and a few minutes later i tried to start it back up and it started up fine. I have been driving it all day and i have not had any problems.

Alright, I was driving back home from shopping and on the way I hear a ding. I look at the dash and notice that my engine light comes on. Luckily, It got me home and seems to be running fine. All I can think of is it may be a sensor or something small. The car isn't shaking or making any noise. It just turned over 5k and the dealership said everything was tip-top.

I have a 2008 Passat 2.0t 4-door. It has 35,000 miles with 12,000 of it coming in the last ten months. I always use 91 premium gas. The car has been running great but last night as I turned a corner the engine stopped.
All the lights work and after waiting a minute the engine turned over but after 20 seconds it stopped. The car was towed to my place and it stayed outside in temperature in the low 20's (F). With the temperature outside around 30 degrees the car turned on and stayed on for over a minute before I had to go to work.
Could the battery be the problem? I turned the car on and drove it for five minutes and it worked normally. The temperature outside is 54 degrees Fahrenheit.

The other day, in sub zero weather I left my radio and lights on as I ran into the store to grab washer fluid. The engine was turned off, but I did leave the radio on for my buddy.... I was in the store for a max of 5 mins. I get back into the car, go to turn it back on...... and nothing.... ZERO juice.... now I've had the radio on before for a much longer period of time without the engine running and have had no problem.
We ended up jumping the car and it started up with no problem. I let it idle for a bit but then all of the light on my dash came on..... I reved the engine a bit and they all went away.
A few days pass and the car starts up with no problem. Then I get stuck sitting in underground parking, so I turn the car off while I wait for the cars to exit the garage... again listening to music with the car off... go to start and nooooo juice! Being that the car is manual I was able to get it rolling and then popped the clutch..
224,000kms and counting.... all OEM

I just pick up a 2000 VW Passat and the next day the alarm started going off. Non-stop honking, doors locking, etc. Pulled back the carpet near module box and there was a ton of water. Water in the box. Board in the box needs replaced and I would like to look for it online vs buying thru the dealership. Also, I'm trying to find out the part # or exact name of the part so I can look it up. I hate dealing with the dealership so I'm trying to find out what I can online before spending half my day on the phone being transferred and put on hold over and over.

So my 2006 m/t has about 85,000 miles on it and today the wife took a short trip in it. She called me 10 minutes in and said the car wouldn't shift into 2nd or 4th or 6th. I have noticed in the last 6 months that occasionally if i get on the gas and go to shift into 2nd, it will sometimes not catch and I assumed this was what she was talking about. She made it where she was going and on her return trip she says it shifted into 2nd once but then no more. I drove the car upon her return and it wouldn't go into 2nd, 4th or 6th. I would sometimes get a slight grinding sound and it was like it just wouldn't pull back far enough to go into gear. The shifter also felt to me to be in a different position no matter what gear it was in. It seemed more upright than normal and definitely not like it normally is. This was nothing like I had experienced before when it wouldn't engage. I saw a previous post where a shifter cable could break.

Worked fine yesterday, today no dice. I was hoping it might be a fuse or something cheap and easy as opposed to a compressor or sensor failure (55k miles, so out of warranty). VW, of course, stopped including fuse box diagrams, but I found a couple on this site and in other places, and no joy after checking relevant fuses and pushing on the rest to be sure they're firmly seated ..

It's been quite a while since I was here - which shows that my Passat has been pretty reliable recently. But now I have a problem. WHen I was driving home about a week ago, I saw the temperature suddenly drop all the way to the stop. I put on the heater, and the air continued to come out at regular temperature, so the problem was in the reading/display. I have a Scangauge, which I connected, and it showed the correct temperature (around 190), confirming a problem with the display.
I contacted the dealer, who first insisted that it must be the thermostat (then why do I get a reading of 190 with the Scan Gauge and why is the heater still hot). When I disagreed, they said it must be the sensor. When I pointed out that the Scan Gauge correctly shows the rise in temperature for cold and then show the temperature maintained at between about 185 and 195) , then they said it must be the gauge, which requires a new instrument cluster.
I went to a another service place I've used (not a dealer) and they insist that it must be the sensor, based on past experience. For this to be true, the engine must have different temperature sensors for the instrument cluster display than it does for the computer.

So I am pretty lucky that we have had warm weather in SoCal this past week as my windshield wipers suddenly stopped working. Checked the fuses, car alarm arms fine (so no hood up problem), and back wiper works. A call to VW says that my car isn't included in the wiper recall. So, I figured I would check here before taking the car to the shop.
