Passat (B7) :: 2012 - Rattle On The Right Side
Jul 16, 2013
My car has rattle on the right side If I push up on the dash it stops-- release the pressure and it returns. Started on rough roads, now almost all the time. Took to my dealer before the 36,000 mile warranty expired and they told me VW doesn't warranty rattles past 12,000 miles. I am afraid fixing it will cause more problems, but it drives me crazy.

My 2014 Camry XLE has the drivers side door rattle. What is it inside the door that rattles?
In comparison, my 2012 Corolla LE was built in Japan and was just as quiet as a mouse inside.
This is the only rattle. So small and so persistent. It comes and goes, sometimes lasting an hour, but when it is gone it is definitely gone.
I can tap on the panels, open and shut the door, run the window up and down and yet it continues to rattle. Then, all on its own, it disappears. Sometimes for days without making a peep or a squeak.
It is not the Seat belt, nor is it anything attached to the seat belt. (If anything should be rattling it should be at the seat belt pillar adjustment).

My 2012 Prius Plug-In has a rattle in the drivers door. It is only noticed when I am driving slow in EV, perhaps 25 to 40 mph, with the drivers door window up. Put the window down an inch and it goes away. Warmer weather seems to increase the rattle.

Shortly after driving off the dealer lot last year with the 2014 Camry a persistent rattle would appear at 70 MPH. It sounded like it was coming from inside the passenger door.
The culprit was a loose passenger side rocker panel knocking against the undercarriage at highway speeds. A few plastic push pins securing the panel to the underside of the frame backed out.
After pushing the pins back in a small dab of RTV was applied at a few locations where the rocker panel comes in contact with the undercarriage and dab was applied to each push pin. Now, not even the heartiest of car washes will work anything loose again.

I'm starting to be a little annoyed with a rattle in the passenger side dash area. I looked around to check if there was anything obvious, but I couldn't find anything...
I sometimes get that noise while driving over bumps, but oddly, I usually tend to get it when I accelerate and get the engine at a specific RPM (like some sort of resonance frequency issue?!?). What could cause this?

I searched over the forums, I only saw one post that was related to my rattle but without an answer.

So I have finally solved the rattle that has been seemingly coming from my driver side dash speaker. I'm not exactly sure which of the 3 things I did fixed it, but it's fixed.
First, I removed the 2 10mm bolts securing the speaker and removed the wiring harness. I noticed that there are 2 metal clips that those bolts screw into and they are loose, so I took some electrical tape and just taped over them to keep them from rattling.
Next, I found the wire for the speaker has a plastic shroud around it that is very stiff and could make noise, so I wrapped that with electrical tape as well.
Finally, the thing that was most likely the cause of the rattle was a loose wiring harness attached to the firewall. If you reach into the speaker hole you will feel the harness just under the hole. Where the harness is attached to the firewall it was extremely loose. I simply took a paper towel and was able to wedge it behind the harness and the firewall which kept it from moving.
Now the driver side rattle is gone, but I've noticed another rattle somewhere else near the center/passenger side of the dash. Every time I fix one rattle I seem to find another. Maybe I'm being a little OCD about it.

I have been able to track down a rattle coming from the driver side rear door. The problem is that I don't know what to do to fix it (aside from taking the car to the dealership).

I noticed this rattle/whistle on one of the 2012 camrys we test drove and now I am hearing it on the one we purchased. when on the highway with the radio off or down low I hear the rattle/whistle. (almost like a jacket zipper rattle) It sounds like it is coming from near the top of the drivers door.

Having rattle on the right side of the center console? If so, did the dealership fix it or did you perform a DIY fix? The dealership said they tightened something a few weeks ago, which worked initially, but it is squeaking again. If I press against it with my hand (or have a passenger press their leg against it), the rattle goes away.

My GLX 5 sp. wagon (>120K miles) has performed superbly. However, I've recently noticed a "rattle" in the driver's side front suspension. I had the constant velocity joints replaced about a year ago (boots cracked/leaking before I caught it...) and while replacing them, I had them do the front control arms but NOT the struts. When the rattle first started, it was only noticeable while turning right on rough pavement in cold weather. And, I jacked us the front end and checked the suspension parts visually and by yanking on them manually - no visible or detectable "play". And, whatever it is doesn't seem to be affecting the ride appreciably and handling is the same as always - no wobble or drift. Would the strut itself - or strut mounts - cause such a rattle?

I have a similar door rattle near the door lock area on the driver's side. It sounds like metal touching metal. I took the door panel off and found nothing loose or unusual. The rattle is driving me crazy.

I have a 2015 Passat TSI. Everything is wonderful except for a rattling noise I hear in the far right side of the dash. I notice it during hot weather when the car has been out. I guess it's because the plastics are expanding and some of the parts are rubbing together or something..? If this is the case, how can I identify where it is? What should I do? Could it be something else?
Here's where it is : [URL] ...

I've recently bought an 09 Passat Estate, which so far I love - even the bits others complain about like the handbrake etc.... however, I do have a slightly annoying rattle occasionally at the back of the car - its not bad, but seems to be coming from the passenger side rear, maybe around the parcel shelf area.
Mean time, its a case of trying the car with shelf out, seats up/down etc to see if they are the cause.

Just recently I am having an odd rattle almost echo vibration when I close my driver's side door. I have tried it with the window down a bit and don't notice or get the noise. It almost feels like something is loose or being vibrated around and above the door.
I haven't had much time to look into it closely - It is pretty annoying!!!

After driving our 2013 Passat for 215 miles, we noticed that there was a rattling noise coming from the left front wheel area but only at slow speeds (under 10 mph). The noise disappeared at higher speeds. Today, we took the car to the dealership but they could not find anything wrong.

Ok everyone the good weather is back, so the drivers side window is down and, I am back to diagnosing an issue that I've been having for some time now. BTW were dealing with my DD 02 1.8t wagon. So all the time over any little bumps in the road or anything that i roll over that "shakes" the drivers side wheel I get this terrible rattle noise. I mean it sounds like I am a dump truck bombing down the road with a bunch of shovels in it......well not that extreme but that sort of shake noise. Anyway the noise however does not occur over any bumps when i even just slightly apply the brake. So I know that it has got to have something to do with the brake rotor or caliper or something on that wheel. Any common issues with brakes? I mean i doubt it is hurting the performance of the vehicle but it is extremely annoying and i feel like something isn't stable that should be until i apply my brakes.

Hearing a fast rattle when you have foot on the gas and disappear when you take your foot off.
It's very tiny rattle and I can't pin point where it's coming from but it's hard to ignore when you hear it every time you step on the gas.

2012 Camry XLE Hybrid
I have a rattle from the rear of my car that I have been trying to identify for 6+ months. It only happens when the car is travelling above 60+ mph. The sound is hard to describe but it sounds like metallic or glass clicking. It is not loud (about a 2 or 3) but it is persistent and driving me crazy (literally, it's not loud but on a long drive gets so annoying).
I have sat in the back seat and it seems to come from the rear of the car (deck, glass, trunk). Been to the dealership several times. They replaced the middle seatbelt and housing to no avail. They have taped down every rod in and metal piece in the trunk. I have laid insulation in the trunk panel and around the spare tire. I have sat with the seat down and reached into the trunk to touch the trunk inside roof while the car is moving to find what is rattling. No one thing I can put my hand on stops the rattling.
Is it possible that its air flow hitting something on my car? I seem to think so because it only happens at highway speeds. But what is making the noise? Wouldn't two physical objects be tapping against each other somewhere?
Is is structural? Like the whole car is vibrating and the entire rear window is clicking against the car somehow? I have literally sat in the back seat for an hour with my ear everywhere and I can't seem to find the problem. I have taped and insulated everything I can think of and I have been to the dealer so many times I think they roll their eyes at me now.
I would love to say this sound is small and doesn't me but it does. When music is playing you cant really hear it but as soon as it stop it is there and persistent.

I started having some issues with a quite loud rattle under the passenger side footwell of my 2012 Golf R. It was a distinct rattle that sounded like it was coming from inside the passenger side dashboard. It was driving me insane. There were many posts about rattles and an equal number of proposed solutions, none of which worked.
I set about listening to see where exactly it was coming from an it turned out to be coming from the passenger footwell floor. I went under the car to see if I could hear it. I couldnt but I took all of the under plastics off to have a look. The plastic bracket that holds the O2 sensor was really loose so I though, "success!". Took it off and started the car, but it was still there.
After punching the floor a few times I got back under the car for another look. I noticed that the fuel lines or whatever they are run through a part of the underbody. With the car running I stuck my finger into the small hole and pulled the lines to the side. Low and behold the noise has stopped. A couple of cable ties later and it was all fixed.
